A Friends-To-Lovers Collection, featuring novellas by:
Nia Forrester, Jacinta Howard, Lily Java, & Rae Lamar
Four Authors. Four Stories. For Love.
“Acceptable Losses” by Nia Forrester: Quentin is in the middle of a separation from his wife that seems to have no conclusive end in sight, while Lena is stuck in Single Girl Hell. The only respite either of them have is their regular coffee dates, while working on shared projects at a very demanding job. Sick of hearing about Lena’s semidisastrous attempts to couple-up, Quentin decides to fix her up. With his brother. Seems like a perfect solution; after all, his brother is a decent enough guy and Lena deserves that. Perfect ... until it appears that the fix-up might actually work.
“Blind Expectations” by Jacinta Howard: Aristotle once said the only thing constant in life is change. Or was that Confucius? Whatever. People are fluid—they come into your life for a while, and when it’s time for them to float on, Leah has no qualms waving goodbye. The only exception is her neighbor and best friend, Trevor. When all else fails in her crazy world, Trevor is always there, reliable, steady… real. But then one night a heated argument leads to a revelation that shakes Leah to the core. Suddenly, Leah is forced to make a choice. But will her heart survive her decision?
“Blackbirds” by Lily Java: Once upon a time Sydney Tarr and Elliott Vance were friends: fast friends, ride or die, pledge of allegiance, take it to the mat, “friends”. And the fact that Sydney loved her friend more than she should didn’t matter until finally... one unusual and spectacular night, it did. It mattered very much. Still, not every story is a fairy tale is it? Friends do part -- sometimes forever -- but, not always.
“Blur” by Rae Lamar: Jade Warner is back home. The bad part? Starting over. The best part? Reconnecting with Kyle Malone. Picking up where they left off years ago, it feels just like old times...except for the mutual attraction and questionable feelings, which are all brand new. For Jade and Kyle, it’s unthinkable to hook up given the history of their fail-safe friendship, but anything can happen when you live under the same roof...
*ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review.* Because my heart said so is the theme of this book ,and though that tagline is in each story, each author did an excellent job of bringing us four individual stories .The friends to lovers theme though common in story telling is a unique experience from this group of authors .
“Acceptable Losses” by Nia Forrester: Man I love me some Quentin, but he can be slow to know what's good to him and for him . So he sets his best friend Lena up with his fine assed brother Darius, man what a mistake ! I loved reading the story of Lena and Darius, shoot I was attracted to him myself . I liked Quentin being an all true man but, he just needed to learn to be true to himself . The chemistry between he and Lena is obvious, but they genuinely like each other and are true friends, the author did a good job of showing us why Quentin was slow to move forward . I loved reading their friendship and I want more of their love story. I definitely want to hear more from this group of characters, and Darius oh Darius, I hope you will be a future book boyfriend.
“Blind Expectations” by Jacinta Howard: Now Jacinta is good at writing the friends to lovers theme, but she makes each book an new experience. Trevor and Leah are true friends who become much more . Trevor hmmm... man if I had a neighbor like him,I would be one lucky girl, and Leah is too if she would just open her eyes . Trevor writes music and Leah is an artist and if you've ever read a book by this author, you know she's good at bringing the music and the art to life in the books she writes . I felt the music and the art, along with the passion that Trevor and Leah felt for each other as I read their story. I surely want to hear more from this couple .
“Blackbirds” by Lily Java: Elliott and Sydney story was a glamorous tale of two individuals trying to get what they want out of life , and sometimes they way you get what you want ,can cause you to loose what you need. Elliott seemed to hold so much responsibility that he seemed older than he was as I read him .Though he and Sydney became fast friends, I was was slow to see the chemistry between them. But... then they went to that concert ,and the music, and the romance ,and Lily wrote that that hot love scene !!!!! I totally got it, and I wanted it for them. The author did a great job of taking us through time, so we can understand how things got to the point where, Sydney was on a train and did not want to speak to Elliott , and why they needed to be together .
“Blur” by Rae Lamar: Jade and Kyle , how you gonna grow up with this fine man and not know he's fine ?! They've been friends forever and when Jade moves back home after a bad breakup their chemistry begins . It's not fast on Jades part ,or shall I say she's slow to acknowledge it. Rae Lamar does a good job of writing the imperfect heroine , they make you want to smack them ! If an author makes me mad, where I'm fussing at a character, I know they've done a good job. Kyle knows what he wants he just needs for Jade to see that she wants it too. When they get together there is an explosion ! Kyle is so sexy and patient and smart, you can't help but love him which I did.
I loved these stories , I loved how each couple came to the time where "Because My Heart Said So."was written ,because that line really touched my heart the four times I read it.
Nia Forrester, 3 Stars Not my fav from Nia. Very cookie cutter story. Not what I'm use to from her. It lacked the steam and passion that I usually read in her books.
Jacinta Howard, 4 stars Loved the story from start to finish. Friends to lovers stories are the best. Trevor and Leah were a magnetic force. They had the foundation of a great friendship that made their coming together spectacular. I wouldn't mind reading more of their story.
Lily Java, 3 stars My first read by this author. I though it was just ok. Too much focus on the past between Sydney and Elliott. Would have liked to read more about their current state. The love scenes needed more descriptive details, but if your looking for more of a sweet romance than this one I'd for you.
Rae Lamar, 3 stars This story was just ok too. It felt eerily like Jacinta Howard's story. Why Jade and Kyle had to wait until the very last page of the story to decide they wanted to be together was beyond me.
My overall thoughts: I loved the idea of these authors collaborating. Nia and Jacinta, I have been a fan of their work, and Lily and Rae, I thought I would discover two new authors to add to my favorites. Unfortunately it didn't turn out that way. 1 story out of the 4 was a hit for me. I think these women could have put together something much better here. Although I didn't love this one, I will continue to support them in their future projects.
I love friends-to-lovers stories and all of the stories in Because My Heart Said So take us along this path to love. The authors behind the stories--Nia Forrester, Jacinta Howard, Rae Lamar & Lily Java--are among my favourites.
Each novella has its own flavour and really pulls the reader in. What I love about each one is the emotional complexity of the characters and their journeys to accepting the love being offered to them. I think it was Shakespeare who said that the path to true love never did run smoothly and the same can be said of the love stories we follow in Because My Heart Said So. That is the beauty of these novellas. This is not instal-love or HEAs too easily won. These novellas deal with pulling away layers, unveiling vulnerability and doing away with the past to be able to face the future.
Four amazing stories by four exceptional authors.. Nia started the series off with a bang.. Friends to lovers stories are my all time favorite, and each author did justice to their story. Lena and Quentin started the trek down lovers lane when Lena's man left her stranded on a busy interstate hwy. Quentin had to jump, skip and fly through so many hoops to get his girl Lena... The second story was Jacintas.. She navigated the relationship between Leah and Trevor.. I think Trevor was the one I connected with the most from a character point of view.. He was determined to get his girl after he fumbled the pass the first time..In the third story Sydney had to be convinced many times that Elliott's intentions were all about loving her.. This story was the heart tugging one.. In the final installment Rae closed out with a smooth and intriguing story. Jade and Kyle's story was a nice way to close the book out. Jade was the most head strong and the harder to convince that her friend Kyle was into her. Yes.. her life was a little off kilted, but Kyle could see past the façade. Overall each story complimented the other and made for a collection of to read again stories...
Really good anthology. I hate when I love the guys but the women irk the hell out of me in more ways than one. Redemption is eminent.
Every story is vastly different, which is what I love about this anthology. You can really see the individuality of each writer yet the common theme of friends becoming lovers ties them all together very nicely.
A fairly good compilation of Multicultural/AA Romance novellas
Although it wasn't pitch perfect, I enjoyed reading through this compilation.. The characters were well developed, and each story was worth the money..
Lena & Quentin: Loved them! This was a great coworkers with benefits story. And more importantly, it felt real! The progression of their relationship was done so well, that you felt as if you were on the journey with them! Nia Forrester wrote a 5-star story here.
Leah & Trevor: This was the most emotional couple! But Jacinta Howard does 'emotional' so well, that it was not at all overwhelming, but more so, you wanted nothing more than for Leah and Trevor to get it together. This was the couple that most deserved happiness!
Sydney & Elliott: This is my first time reading Lily Java and I LOVED IT! They were my favorite couple. They had a magnetic connection and an understanding of each other that went far beyond words.
"Their synergy had been pre-arranged. Almost as if a friendship and camaraderie between them had always been in the cards, and they'd finally met to act on it." - Sydney
I will definitely be checking out more stories by this author!
Jade & Kyle: Now these two.... they were meant to be from the very beginning and everyone except them knew so. They were so freaking cute, but connected in a way that only the two of them could understand. And the fact that Kyle was teaching Jade how to appropriately distribute her f*cks (when and who to give them to)... was HILARIOUS! Although this was my first story from Rae Lamar, it absolutely won't be my last! I am on my way to read Aris' story now since she made an appearance here.
These stories spoke volumes on listening to your heart! Loved it!
Nia and Jacinta's books I have had the pleasure of reading, and I am a huge fan of their work, but Lily and Rae, I have not, up until this moment. I have been an avid reader of interracial books because my African-American literature held no substance. It was becoming the same storyline with all of the characters being the same. There was no imagination. No feeling of wanting to read anything else written in the series, until now. Thank you ladies for giving me that love of reading African-American literature again. Thank you for the characters show of struggle, education level, camaraderie between the characters, the realness of their everyday lives. Your books captured what could easily be real life, not everyone being billionaires, or drug dealers, or all about the sex, etc. Every story had substance and meaning. I have added Lily and Rae on my list of authors and books to read. Thank you for a beautifully crafted book!
This novel is a sensual love novel that really touches the heart. The Characters well developed and the flow of the stories Keep you turning the pages. Each author bring their own unique way of bringing these characters to life and believing in the gift of falling in love. If you have not read this novel listen to the play list that Jacinta Howard has on youtube and it will give You a good feeling while reading . Excellent novel Nia Forrester, Jacinta Howard, Lily Java and ,Rae Lamar. Can't wait for the full length novel of each couple
I enjoyed the stories in the anthology. This was my first time reading stories by Lily Java and Rae Lamar. Hoping all of the authors plan on building on these stories. I'm interested in seeing more of what happens with the couples.
Every story in this book was wonderfully written and enjoyable. The characters, chemistry and the storylines were truly amazing. I recommend this book, at least put it on your TBR list. You'll love it!

A chance meeting on an NY subway brings them back to each other. Elliot has a new future but he is determined to never let Sydney leave again…Fabulous story..a must read and a page turner..new author for me..will not be my last read by Lily Java
Rae Lamar weaves a tale of two friends who discover they have so much more in common than their friendship. Jade is back home in the ATL. Kyle is glad and wants to help heal her from the lousy ex she left in VA. He tries to help her get a new attitude and mindset. Along the way he has a serious health issue . Kyle discovers what he thought was a fluke is the real thing and wants Jade around forever…Great read with characters from another great story Ms Lamar wrote about Aris…
Loved this book!! Each story captures you with their strong characters and vibrant writing. The theme is the same but the vehicle and delivery are all so different in each voice. The flow from story to story was great too!! I couldn't put it down after finishing one and had to move on to the next. Thank you for these wonderful four versions of black love with all the feels and heat. Can't wait for the next collection!!!!
I loved all four of these authors in this friends to lovers collection. Friends to lovers is and will always be my favorite type of story to read. Because why not fall in over with the person who has been there for you in EVERYTHING? Each story was unique and I LOVED IT! Now I’m off to find the full novels because there is no way these stories stop where they left me 😂
I will like to say I LOVE ALL OF YOU GUYS! Your books are very informative, inspirational and personable for me. It's like eating a hearty, warm bowl of soup on a cold day. These stories are very good for the soul .. Great Read! ☺
Great anthology to introduce new authors with some emotionally, heartfelt literature that will have you re-evaluate how carelessly we treat our most vital organ (the heart).
I read the first 2 beautiful stories. Highly recommended as I moved to the finished book Blind Expectations a fabulous book by Jacinta Howard which I reviewed earlier this week about Trevor and Leah's friends to lovers adventure.
I enjoyed this collection of novellas. While I enjoyed some more than others, they were all great bite size romances. First time I read several novellas and felt satisfied. Friends to lovers might be my second favorite novella, after second chance.
I’m the end end I enjoyed the varies stories. They had their drawn out points, but I wanted to know how the author was going to pull the story to a conclusion.
I love a good friends to lovers story so I was only too happy to read Because My Heart Said So by four great authors: Nia Forrester, Jacinta Howard, Lily Java, and Rae Lamar.
"Acceptable Losses" by Nia Forrester was a pretty interesting story. Quentin and Lena are lawyers working for the same firm and have been friends for a long time. While Lena has had a crush on Quentin, nothing has happened because Quentin is married (although separated). I didn't necessarily love their friendship. While they were "friends" there ended up being quite a lot about Quentin that Lena didn't know and Quentin didn't even know Lena had a twin. So there were a lot of holes for me. I thought Quentin setting Lena up with his brother then wanting her back (and her being compared to a similar hot wheel incident when they were kids) was a bit <<insert Rest Bitch Face emoji here>>. It took Quentin waaaaaaay too long to finally admit his feelings for Lena and felt that Forrester didn't have enough room in the short story to delve into Quentin's back story and why he was the designated "martyr" of his family (as his brother put it) and constantly lived his life for other and not for himself. I actually preferred the brother and wouldn't mind getting a story about him. Quentin seemed a bit stiff, square, and boring for me, overall. His divorce so soon into a relationship made it a bit hard for me to really see how their HEA would work out.
I adored Jacinta Howard's "Blind Expectations." Both Trevor and Leah were such wonderful characters. I loved their friendship. As artists both have known each other since Leah moved in a few doors down in the same complex. When we first see Leah and Trevor together, he's helping her off the side of the road where her car broke down. Their back and forth, bickering, and how Trevor casually stepped in to take care of things for her was endearing. From there we get to see Lena apologize for snapping on him and how Trevor reacts to her silly, meandering voicemails. Their interactions were truly charming. I loved how Trevor eventually reeled her into a romantic entanglement instead of friendship. Leah is such a quirky and unique heroine that I couldn't help but enjoy her eccentricities. Trevor seemed like the exact man you'd be friends with then fall deeply, madly in love with. Both characters were well developed and I could easily believe their transition from friends to lovers. I would be happy to read more about these two characters and see their love blossom even more.
"Blackbirds" by Lily Java seemed written by a poet. The writing was melodic and highly cerebral but in the end didn't do it for me as a love story. Maybe because the story seemed more about the wording and symbology than the characters and their emotions and development. Either way, I didn't love this story, couldn't finish it, and didn't like being stuck in Sydney's head way more than getting to see her and Elliot interact.
"Blur" by Rae Lamar was an enjoyable 'round the way romance. Kyle and Jade were real and vibrant. I could see both in my mind and know I would have loved the story more had I been able to see their interplay on screen. Seeing the teasing light in their eyes or the way Jade or Kyle moved would have only enhanced the story more. There are funny moments, like Kyle being Jade's Fuck it Coach and explaining to her that she is "the gatekeeper through which all fucks must pass." And sweet and caring moments. It brought to mind a sort of Love and Basketball/Brown Sugar interplay that I love to watch but, here, didn't always translate smoothly on the page.
This compilation of books have left me wanting more. I have been a Nia Forrester fan for a while now. Never read the other authors until now and I am amazed and ready for the next series of each part.
Any time I find out that Nia Forrester is working on something new, I get giddy, lol. Finding out that she was collaborating with three other authors had me anticipating the "Because My Heart Said So" book's release. In "Acceptable Losses", the reader gets to go on a journey with Lena and Quentin. Character chemistry as with everything I read from Nia is on Point and Oozes from the pages from beginning to end. It's crazy that in life, we never seem to see what's right in front of us. I'm Fiending to read more from this couple and pray that my wait will not be long. Hint, hint Nia, lol...
In "Blind Expectations", Leah and Trevor had me smiling like a serious geek, lol. This novella was brilliantly written by Jacinta Howard, who just happens to be another one of my favorite authors. If you don't know about her talents, you better learn today. Anxiously waiting to see where it goes with this Amazing couple.
Lily Java's "Blackbirds", Elliot and Sydney's story, caught me off guard. I'm not sure what I was expecting from Elliot initially, but I just knew that Natalie would somehow cause issues. Definitely loved this story and can't wait for Lily to release their full story. She's quickly become one of my must read authors.
"Blur" was Jade and Kyle's intriguing story. This was my first Rae Lamar read and I'm looking forward to reading more of her work, especially when she release more from this Dynamic couple. Jade's BFF, Rachel also brings significance to Jade's and Kyle's journey.
This collaboration of stories from these four authors is a must read, and is highly recommended.
I really enjoyed this anthology. I felt each author did a great job of transitioning the couples from friends to lovers and presenting different perspectives and challenges for each.
Nia Forrester-Lena and Quentin's story touched on dating while separated/divorced. I liked how Nia handled showing us Quentin and his wife's actions as it pertained to the demise of their marriage. We were able to see both sides and understand what each of them experienced. Lena and Quentin were actually my favorite couple.
Jacinta Howard- Leah and Trevor's chemistry was apparent from the beginning. Trevor was determined to get Leah to see him as a man and not a friend. He had a few road blocks, but his persistence paid off. He took Leah to task about respect in relationships and made sure she understood he would not tolerate it. That was one of the moments I liked best.
Lily Java-This one started off a bit slow for me with Sydney's musings, but I did end up liking the character and was able to finish it. I'm glad I did. Sydney and Elliott's story reminded me of finding love where you least expect it and losing it just as fast. It was beautiful and heartbreaking. I definitely felt their pain.
Rae Lamar-In this story, Kyle had to teach Jade she was deserving of being treated well by a man and how to love herself enough to not tolerate anything less when dating. He basically prepared her to be able to accept the love he offered. Because they were long-time friends, he knew just how to handle her. It was awesome to see her realize her worth and take a chance at experiencing real love.
