O'Harra Brothers #3

Saving Liberty

Rate this book
Emily is the President's daughter. Gorgeous but innocent...not the kind of woman who should get involved with me, an ex-Marine with a bad boy rep. But when a sniper opens fire, the need to protect her is stronger than anything I've ever felt. Suddenly, we're on the ground, my body covering hers. I save her life then walk away, sure that I'll never see her again.

But when a shaken Emily asks me to become her bodyguard, I can't turn her down. Now I have to wear a suit and call her ma'am when all I want to do is slam her up against the wall and tear her clothes off. Neither of us can resist...but I can't let her get close, not with what's lurking in my past. And the danger is far from over. The White House is under threat...and I'll do whatever it takes to protect the woman I've fallen for.

This was HAWT!

This book has all the ingredients to make it an irresistible read: forbidden love, a dark, tall, and handsome man in uniform with an Irish accent, a likable heroine and just the right amount of mystery and suspense.

The writing is good, the characters are developed and their chemistry if scorching hot.

The only reason I’m not giving it 4 stars is that I'm not into politics and therefore wasn’t interested in some aspects of the story.

Other than that, this book is very good.

Saving Liberty is book three in the O’Harra Brothers series by Helena Newbury. I just this minute finished this book and I am breathless right now. My mind is a mass of jumbled thoughts and I need to somehow form all that mess into a review to convince you all how amazing this book is and that you NEED to read it! The action starts pretty much with page one and doesn’t end until the final pages. But, the last thirty percent is wildly crazy. You will NOT want to stop reading from that point on! Even though these first four books in this series can be read in any order, shockingly I’ve been reading them in the proper order. I think Kian from this book is my favorite O’Harra brother so far and perhaps the sexiest. You’ll have to let me know what you think.

Kian O’Harra has a past filled with secrets and darkness. He served in the Marines, tried to work as a Secret Service Agent in Washington D.C. and now works as a private body guard. Then “that day” happened and he saw her for the first time, touched her for the first time, and he was lost. His life would never be the same.

Emily Matthews is the President’s daughter. She has been trained to always say and do the right thing, to present a picture of the perfect supportive daughter. But then “that day” happened, and the safe world she lived in came crumbling down. And, it was the day she saw “him” for the first time.

“She was good. And that made part of me want to do very bad things to her.”

As these two come together, the attraction is so strong between them that it’s only a matter of time until they give in to it. Kian fights as hard as he can against it. He’s darkness with nothing to offer someone like Emily. But his inner strength has limits. Of one thing he is certain, he will protect Emily with all that he has. And the danger they are fighting is bigger than they ever could have imagined. And it’s much closer to them than anyone thought.

If you enjoy romantic suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the book, that will make you swoon with a hero that is so protective, so growly, who will gladly put himself in danger to save the woman he loves, then this book is for you. I loved Kian and Emily and am not ready to let them go. I so hope I get to see them at some point in the future. Book four in this series will be Carrick O’Harra’s book in Outlaw’s Promise! I can’t wait to read it.

“So this is what kissing’s meant to be like.”

The writing isn't bad necessarily, but the story just never picked up for me and it was too insta-love for me to even want to continue on. I didn't really feel any chemistry between the MCs either, and the whole story lacked any actual emotion that it tried to portray. I also didn't realize this book was part of a series even though it is a standalone, so I think that affected my enjoyment as well, as I felt like I was missing something the whole time, but then again, I also had no desire to find out what I was missing exactly since I was bored most of the time anyways, and I could hardly connect with any of the characters.

I may try this book again if I restart the series, maybe when I'm in the mood later on, but it just didn't do it for me now.

It was 5 Stars until the last few chapters. It ended as unbelievable as a kiddo playing kissy kissy with their Barbie dolls. I hate when this happens but I enjoyed it so much until that point.

I've been into funny sexy lately, so this was a surprisingly different directing in my reading. It did get a little unbelievable at the end. Yet one in which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Thank you Helena for the read, now I have to find out about the rest of the O'Harra clan.

Review

Helena Newbury is, and probably will remain to be, my favourite romance author! Her novels are always full of life, drama and the most passionate scenes in the world! 'Saving Liberty' is part of the unofficial 'Kissing' series, which is comprised of full length, standalone novels each interconnected with the other in some way: mostly through friendship and blood. This unofficial series always gets me excited, especially whenever the author announces a new novel on the way! And thank goodness for the quick writing of Helena Newbury! She write quick and like a pro!
I just KNEW (and also kind of predicted) that 'Saving Liberty' would be yet another FIVE star from me, and here's why:
As always, the first thing I look for and pay close attention to is the writing... The way an author writes (aka their writing style) is something which shapes and creates the novel; a sort of trademark design which individual authors have which encourage their readers to come back for more. This author's writing is beyond fantastic! It is simple yet evocative? It is able to carry across the tiniest of senses and emotions. This is probably the number one reason I give these novels such good ratings!
The story and idea behind each novel is original and unique yet also kind of similar and familiar to the other novels. I'm not sure how to correctly express what I am trying to say, but these novels have a design to them that I love! 'Kissing Liberty' is not only about the steamy scenes; it is also about the different experiences everybody has and the hardships they face.
Every novel has been emotionally touching for me, and 'Kissing Liberty' has not been an exception. It is full of love and passion, of fear and grief, of happiness and diligence, of pain and suffering, of loyalty and kindness. Seriously, the list could go on and on!
It was also full of drama, anticipation and tension to the brim! So exciting, I literally couldn't put the book down!
The chemistry between our two main characters, Emily and Kian, was explosive! If you're looking for something incredibly passionate yet full of emotion, then this one's for you!
There was such great character design and development! I felt like each characters was fully constructed from top to bottom, despite some only having minor roles to play. Emit herself grew a lot in the span of time which was given. She changed and transformed from many different hers: the sheltered one, the grieving one, the jaded one. Kian also grew out of the shell that he locked himself away in and became more loving. It continues to be fascinating to me at how well the author does in creating her characters! They were splendid!
I loved the pace that was set to reveal information. It was quick enough to keep me curious and hungering for more but not so fast that I missed out on important information and connection with the characters.
I couldn't spot any typos or spelling mistakes in my copy of the ARC! The grammar and prose were done superbly well!
Congratulations to Helena Newbury on publishing an OFF THE CHARTS read!

Rating Plan
1 star : Strongly did not like the book, writing and plot was bad. Idea of the book was against my liking.
2 star : Didn't like it, didn't find it interesting or gripping. Seemed to drag on to me.
3 star : An average book. Wasn't bad or good. Everything else was well done. Original idea.
4 star : Like a 3 star but has potential to it as a series or the book grew on me as it progressed and certain scenes captured me. I Enjoyed it and read it in one sitting.
5 star : I LOVED IT! I stayed up late until 3 am. Author is a genius, characters, plot, idea, development, EVERYTHING was EXCELLENT. Nothing else can possibly be said except that its 5 STAR!

WOW

This story was so packed with action and intrigue, I was utterly sucked in. The world around me ceased to exist… chores, kids, pets… as I ran with Emily and Kian as they figured out how to save themselves, and the President.

I’m completely floored by this authors ability with words. I’ve read so many of her books that I shouldn’t be surprised any more, but I swear each book is absolutely fantastic. I wish 100 stars was a possibility.

I didn’t enjoy this one nearly as much as the previous three books in the series but have to quickly add it’s not because of the quality of the writing. I still think it’s amazing. This is more of a political thriller type book and as I hate politicians with a seething burning hatred, I was predisposed to have issues from the beginning.
Emily is the heroine of this book and is the only child of the president of the United States. She survives an attempted assasanation attempt when Kian, the oldest of the O’Harra brothers sees what’s about to happen and saves her. He’s former FBI so he knows what he’s doing. But Emily is left with a debilitating case of PTSD and it seems the only time she feels safe is when she’s Kian. So the FBI most reluctantly take him back as bodyguard to Emily. And of course this makes any kind of physical relationship, no matter how hot they are for each other, taboo. So being taboo, you can guess what happens.

Kian is just as hot and sexy as his brothers and he’s what keeps me from giving this one lower marks because besides being more of a political thriller than a romance, I really had issues with Emily in that I didn’t like her. At all. I didn’t think she was nearly good enough for Kian. She had no spine and always did what Mama wanted her to do, which is being nothing more than a trophy daughter. I found her dull as dishwater and had a number of TSTL moments.
Overall I was disappointed in this offering,

BUT

GREAT! I’ve always been a sucker for personal security and the man who protects the woman in danger and this one was a great read! I finished it in record time and I was drawn in right away. Written like I was watching a movie it had all the components to make it a success—betrayal, personal security, sexual tension, and the battle of good vs evil. I’ve read all the books in this series and they’re all so good!

OMG That is how I feel after reading this book. Helena Newbury, I SALUTE YOU!!

I wanted to punch the air, get the firecrackers, pop the champagne and do a happy dance around my house..
description

Pure genius is what I call this book. I have been privileged to have read some of Helena's previous books and although this can be read as a standalone, we meet in this story another of the hot O'Harra brothers.
Kian, is an ex-marine who now works on his own protecting different high profile individuals. He's overcome a painful upbringing and life has completely thrown him plenty of obstacles on his way making him a rule breaker and weary of who to trust. Working on his own has worked so far, he doesn't answer to anyone keeping past demons at bay.
Everything was working to his favour until one fateful day when he meets, Emily. From the moment they set eyes on each other, the connection is instantaneous, the attraction is undeniable and their lives change forever.
Emily is the President's daughter, although having to live her life surrounded by Secret Service staff who follow and watch her every move, her life has been as normal and happy as possible. She has an aura of contentment and calm which is contagious, her confidence and sparkly personality is something that Kian admires and loves from their first interaction. Sadly all that changes in a split of a second.
Emily's "secure" life changes drastically and she finds herself feeling trapped and scared even in the comfort and security of her own bedroom. Nightmares plague her dreams and is almost as if she finds herself at a standstill unable to move forward. She realises very fast that the only person who brings her solace (even by thought) is Kian O'Harra.
When she asks Kian to be her personal bodyguard, not only would they have to fight her fears, they will have to fight their feelings. As the two are continuously tiptoeing around each other, danger from an unlikely source looms and lurks in the background. Fighting their attraction is really the least of their worries.

A high Octane, action packed, utterly romantic, passionate and impeccably written story that make Saving Liberty a must read and my top recommendation for 2016.

5 -- The President’s Daughter -- stars

I really loved this book. It was unique and emotional. Like always, Helena Newbury delivers a great book with lots of suspense. But in this book, there are also great action scenes. The action does really happen in the second part. There is something odd going on and Emily and Kian have to figure it out before it’s too late.

Emily is the daughter of the President of the US. One day, she is at the park for a science fair and there she meets Kian. Kian is a private security guy and is protecting someone when he meets Emily. Later that day, something horrible happens at the park that will change both their lives. Emily doesn’t feel safe anywhere, expect when she thinks about Kian. So she wants to hire Kian to protect her. Kian is hesitant at first, but he really wants to make Emily happy again so he accepts her offer. Kian and Emily spend a lot of time together. The tension between them rises each time they see each other, but they keep a distant for their own reasons.

This author did, in my opinion, a great job with describing Emily’s fear and anxiety. I can’t imagine what Emily went through and I hoped from the start that things would change for her soon. Fortunately she has Kian. Kian is really amazing. He’s big, muscular and gorgeous. He sees Emily and her change when nobody else does, but more importantly he makes her feel safe and happy again. Kian would do anything for her. Something happened to him in the past and this still affects his life. His past also keeps him from being with Emily, because he’s afraid that she will leave him when she leaves.

I really loved Emily’s growth. She becomes stronger when she has Kian close. She is also smart and shy. She’s very determined to figure out what’s going on and that sometimes brings her in trouble. She’s also very determined to be with Kian and doesn’t care with anybody else thinks about it. She wants him and falls in love with him quickly and hard. I also loved the growth of their relationship. Loved the way they met, met again and when they finally admitted their feelings to each other. Their relationship is very strong and nothing can separate them.

“I’m fucking crazy for you. Every inch of you. Every scrap of you. Every atom of you. I’m not going to let anyone hurt you but right now I’m going to make you mine.”

Emily is the first daughter. She’s suffered from a trauma when a sniper opens fires on her. The only thing that made her felt safe was the ex-Marine who saved her and protected her from the event. Now, nightmares were haunting her, and she things the only one who can keep her safe was HIM.

Kian was an ex-Marine who had his own baggage. He has no intention to go back to his past, or be his bodyguard. But when she personally asked him, he had no choice but to say YES. Now, he was back to wearing suit and calls the girl who haunts his dreams: Ma’am.

The sexual chemistry between them was overwhelming, and I was wondering when it would blow up! The sense of anticipation when these two would get together is just like the action and suspense that I was experiencing with each and every page.

I enjoyed reading this book immensely. With the romance that reminds me of Chasing Liberty and First Daughter, combined with some jaw-dropping action, a whole-lot of chasing and some heart-stopping, unexpected twists and turns – makes Saving Liberty a worthwhile read.

I didn’t stop reading, and finished this book in one sitting. Who can possibly put this one down and miss out on all the fun and thrill? Certainly not me! Helena Newbury’s new novel had me totally hooked.

Helena Newbury always delivers. From the first chapters, the story is sizzling with action and chemistry. I love it when an author's narrative makes every moment in a scene vibrant with importance.

You don't get to wait ages for the plot to happen or a meaningful instant between the characters. No, this is rapid intensity that booms the pages right at the start.

The President's daughter and the bodyguard.

Doesn't that bring goosebumps to your skin?

It certainly does to me, especially because this President's daughter is smart, sweet and hurt, and this bodyguard is hardened, protective and a force ready to be unleashed.
The best thing is that, along with that wonderfully forbidden romance, there is a strong suspense plot to back it up. An extremely dangerous political conspiracy is brewing at the White House and both Kian and Emily are caught up in the middle of it.

Fireworks on all sides, people! ;-)

I really, really enjoyed the fiery hot romance, but it felt incredible when all hell broke loose and the characters had to run for their lives, fight their worst fears, face ruthless and powerful enemies. And yet they still felt so real because their humanity was everywhere in their scared, resilient actions while bullets went flying and the world turned upside down around them.

It's pure adrenaline, maybe a bit of a deus ex machina solution to the insurmountable problem they find themselves in (that final appearance seemed a bit far-fetched), but no doubt the ending was exhilarating, , action-filled, brave and terribly fun. Another amazing read from this author.

Five BIG, SHINING STARS!!!

Helena has done it again. This time she just created my new favorite book….well, I said it already with the last book and.... I’m probably going to say it again with the next one, but what else can I say? She does it every time with a new book and that’s what makes it so exciting for me.

Action, romance, excitement, adventure and all of this with the fantastic way Helena is writing her books. There wasn’t even one minute of being bored, having time to relax or even falling asleep…. J
It gets better chapter after chapter …… and yes, I was tired, but when it comes to those books, I take the risk to look like a zombie next day at work ;)

It is really something outstanding, how she builds the character and surprises the reader repeatedly over and over again.
Of course it was a long night, as always …..but how can it be different?
I need to finish the book, before I go to sleep …..ups ….. I just realized, that I’m totally addicted!!! :D :D :D

Thank you Helena for those wonderful books You write for us.
It’s always a pleasure to have a day full of adventure with your characters!!!

Sending Love from Germany/Hamburg!!!

Kian and Emily

This book had me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole thing! I did not want to put it down and ended up breezing through it. A hot hunky Irish private security person (is that what you call them?) meets a beautiful innocent Texan beauty that is the first daughter and ends up saving her when bullets start flying at a park in DC. He is a former Marine and former Secret Service (until his Irish temper unleashed) and the first daughter needs him as her protector much to the chagrin of the Secret Service. There are numerous assassination attempts, kidnappings, running for your life moments, an evil Vice President, a conspiracy to takeover the nation, attraction, denial of attraction, hot steamy scenes and a really good book.

This is the 3rd book I’ve read from this author and the 3rd 5 ⭐️ review!

Kian O’Harra is a private security guard and finds himself saving the president’s daughter Emily from an assassination attempt.

Emily suffers terrible PTSD and requests Kian as her personal security person. Together, they uncover a dangerous plot leaving the reader trying to figure out how the heck they’re going to get out of this.

SAVING LIBERTY is my 3rd book I've read by Helena Newbury. I knew it would be well written and action-packed with a love story, too! My only concern was with it being about politics. I needlessly worried. There were no party lines. All the politicians were corrupt with the exception of the President. His daughter was Emily Matthews. She was an adult, but lived at the White House with her parents. She was expected to carry out public appearances that would reflect well on her father.

She was at such an appearance, smiling and shaking hands, winning the crowd over with her grace and her beauty, when she first laid eyes on Kian O'Harra. He was a private bodyguard to one of the guest. It didn't stop her from wanting to met him. His good looks, and all those muscles, drew her to him. Needless to say, his boss was not pleased with her giving him all her attention. His boss took him away and they both walked into the distance. She watched until he was out of her sight, thinking she would never see him again. Not long after that a sniper started shooting at the crowd. He picked off all Emily's Secret Service Detail and made her his prime target. Kian saw what was happening, make sure his boss was safe, and ran to save Emily. He risked his own life that day to save Emily and a young boy. He was shot in the arm & she was shot in the leg. After all his heroics, the two of them were separated pronto after the place was secure. Emily knew that he had saved her life that day, and without him she would never feel safe again.

Emily suffered mental distress after that day. She was so afraid that she had melt downs if she left the White House. Nightmares kept her from sleeping, and she kept getting worse. She didn't want the Secret Service, she wanted Kian. Nobody else felt that need for him, so she made it her mission to find him. Even pleaded her case to her father, the President. Then she even had to convince Kian. He never wanted to return to the Secret Service, but one look at how scared she was, and he could deny her nothing. She needed help and if he didn't save her, who would? “Your job will be to guard Miss Matthews. You will stay by her side. Her code name is Liberty.” Kain takes the job of “Bodyguard” to a whole new level!

This review consists of random quotes I liked and may contain major spoilers!!

“I could barely function, much less go out. But the longer I stayed inside, the more frightening the outside world became.

“He has a way of looking at you that makes you feel like no one else in the world exists.“

“Imagine the most enticing cake you’ve ever, ever seen. Smoothly frosted with thick chocolate frosting, intricately decorated with sugar flowers. It looks perfect. Evereyone’s inviting you to take a big ol’ bite.
But you know - you just have this instinct - that it’s a trick. That just beneath the frosting, instead of light, perfect, sponge, it’s a solid block of squirming, crawling maggotts and roaches. It doesn’t matter how good it smells: the thought of biting into it makes you want to hurl. But only you know. Everyone else wanders what the hell’s the matter with you. Don’t you like cake?

“Everyone was smiling and cheering but that was irrelevant, like telling someone the water’s warm when they can’t swim.“

“Millions of people were on some pill, for something. There was nothing wrong with it. But I had a horrible feeling that that would disguise the problem, not fix it.“

“She hid, even when you were looking right at her.“

“She was so determined to do her part, to make everyone else happy: didn’t she deserve to be happy herself?“

“To feel safe, I needed him close to me. To avoid screwing things up for both of us, I had to keep him at arm’s length.“

“Get enough people in one place and they stop acting like individuals: a pack mentality takes over and they operate like one massive creature. That’s how riots start and stampedes happen: Panic and anger spread instantly and the mood can shift in a heartbeat.“

“I didn’t dare open myself up to her: I was too afraid of the pain that would follow, if I lost her.“

“You thought the world was safe and suddenly, it wasn’t“

Emily is the President’s beautiful daughter and Kian is a former Marine who now works providing private security for various businessmen after he left the Secret Service. When an attempt is made on Emily’s life, it’s Kian who saves her. As Emily struggles with memories of the attack, she talks Kian into rejoining the Secret Service and becoming her personal bodyguard.

Both Kian and Emily are good characters and the attraction and chemistry between them is intense and hot. They struggle not to cross the line knowing that it would be inappropriate considering the circumstances. But the more they’re around each other, the harder it is to fight the pull to be together.

The romance in this book was sweet. The action however, was a little over the top. I’ve got a good vivid imagination, and I had to really stretch it in order to believe some of the things that occur towards the end. I mean, we’re talking about the President and his daughter, the Vice President, Secret Service and terrorists.

Other than the crazy drama, I enjoyed the story and characters. I give Kian 4.0-4.5 stars and Emily 3.5-4.0 stars.

Saving Liberty is definitely edge of your seat reading. The suspense, danger and action are pretty much non-stop and compelling. There are assassination plots, a criminal conspiracy at the highest echelon of government, a mass shooting and a kidnapping. Kian O'Harra and Emily Matthews' chemistry is white hot and electrifying. It had to be serendipity that put Kian in the same place as Emily when the shooting started. He saved her life then disappeared. She hasn't felt safe since. Being asked to be her bodyguard is a two edged sword for Kian. He wants to protect her but doesn't want to operate under Secret Service restrictions. He slowly rebuilds Emily's self confidence as they grow closer. Figuring out too late that there's an assassination attempt about to take place, Emily and Kian are caught in the middle of it all. On the run and trying to get their findings into the hands of the right people proves to be nearly impossible. Ultimately, the good guys prevail and there's an HEA for Kian and Emily. Enthralling reading!

This was the first brothers standalone book I read before I knew they were all interlinked slightly, and in hindsight it is unfortunately my least favourite. However it’s completely essential to lay the ground work for the final Brothers book which concludes all 4 brothers journey.
The plot is pretty interesting - the daughter of the president and a body guard (no it’s not the same as the Mandy Moore movie) with a sinister plot to take down the president that his daughter and the body guard uncover and fight against. However my problem with the plot is that it’s so big. Kind of like a movie plot, and so I think it’s too big to mesh with the other 3/4 books of the series (although technically the first four are standalones so that’s far enough).
Still got the same good writing, good romance and good levels of steam.
A must read if you want to read Brothers and it’s still enjoyable though quite long and with such a big plot
