Violet has spent the last few months falling in love with an incredibly clumsy man. Daniel hasn’t told her that his clumsiness actually stems from the fact that he is experiencing things like riding an escalator for the first time; because he comes from a different world. When Daniel’s responsibilities force him to end his inter-world travels, he leads Violet to the hidden doorway to his world, hoping that she will follow. Once she has travelled to the Realm of the Lilies, Violet finds herself in a world that is centuries behind her own; whose leaders are selected by bloodlines rather than elections and guarded by soldiers with swords and chainmail instead of machine guns and Kevlar. More alarmingly, Violet finds that she has been separated from Daniel and they both face adversity as they fight to be reunited in Daniel’s world.
Through the Fig Tree is the writing debut of an Australian woman. K. E. Fraser is a medical scientist, a mother of two, a sewist, a yoga lover, a mad Whovian, a self-confessed geek and a writer. Find me on facebook - https://www.facebook.com/KEFraserindi...
When I was a little girl I would visit a park down the road, we called it 'Triangle Island' and at the very tip of the triangle grew a giant Moreton Bay Fig tree. It's trunk was littered with names carved into its bark, time had made it a monument, and it was beautiful and mighty. I had quite the imagination as a child (and I still do as an adult), and I had convinced myself that within this tree lay the door to another realm entirely. I needed only to pass through the tree and I would find myself on the other side. So -- as you can imagine, when I read K E Fraser's beautiful book, Through the Fig Tree I was delighted, for it tells the story of a young woman who follows the love of her life through a fig tree into another realm entirely. K E Fraser has created such a fascinating fantasy realm within her book, that so quickly establishes itself with its set of fascinating political rules and history that makes it come to life. Also...there are Dragons. Dragons are awesome. It's just that simple.
Violet, our heroine, has a lovely feminine quality to her that is instantly likeable. She takes everything happening around her with a pinch of salt, and goes about doing what she has to do. Daniel, her sweet-heart, is just as adorable and being introduced to the royal family of the Realm is quite enjoyable. I look forward to learning a lot more about them!
So, if you like portal-stories of adventures in other worlds, and feel like you need a break from this world - pick up 'Through the Fig Tree' sometime.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a fantastic fantasy with Dragons. It is an easy read. If you like a bit of adventure, traveling to a different world, and dragons this is for you.
