As much as the Phantom story is about Erik, it's still a bold move to write about him & eliminate all other familiar characters. This book takes us to before the Opera House, before Persia, when Erik was with a traveling circus. It veers from other retellings that he's in his own sumptuous tent, recognized for the draw he is to the circus rather than abused by those in charge.

Isabella is a waif with street skills; a clever, cynical match for Erik. They're drawn to each other quickly on both emotional and physical levels. This is another bold move, changing the narrative so that Christine and her doe-eyed naïve girlishness is not Erik's first and only love. Isabella's cynical quickness is a good pairing for Erik; I'm not sure he'd be so smitten with Christine after Isabella.

Some editing would be helpful - sentence fragments and such tend to jar me out of the narrative. The author let me know further editing will be happening & I look forward to rereading it!

I strongly recommend reading this and the sequel together. Their style reminds me of an old school movie serial, emotionally rich with a cliffhanger to bring you back for the next installment.

Pretty Good

I really enjoyed the short little Novel. It needed a bit of editing, but I enjoyed it regardless. Only one sentence stood out but, it didn’t kill the fun I had reading about these characters.

This is a story about a unlikely relationship. Erik and Isabella they were absolutely adorable together. I actually wish there was more to the book. It was just fun how it played out with them trying to out wit each other, and finding comfort with one another.

Isabella, has her life basically falling apart. Until she meets the person that changes her life forever. Erik...
she had a very tragic past herself. And I found her very relatable. But I just love how she stood up for herself with Erik.

I would recommend this to other fans. Or historical romance fans in general. It was actually a pretty short but sweet read. I look forward to buying the next in the series.

Love at first sight. Well written, amazingly explored characters... This prequel to The Phantom of The Opera is now one of my favourite books.
