“We deal in blood, friend.” With those prophetic words, John “Big Slick” Elder, a professional killer with an unbendable set of ethics, finds himself trapped between the harsh concrete will of a brutal boss of bosses and Slick’s own never-broken boundaries on what he will or won’t do for money. Slick had vowed never to work in Ohio, for very personal reasons, yet now he’s found himself in that great flat state with his work-partner, Thumper, and at the beck and call of a very violent criminal underworld boss who forces them to carry out on a very unusual errand, one that he claims involves no violence and appears harmless at first. The question is, will Slick and Thumper figure out the end game behind this simple chore in time, and are they prepared for what it will reveal about who they are, as men? The thrilling followup to Elijah Drive's debut mystery novel BULLETS. “Razor sharp writing, crackling dialogue, characters that jump off the page and slap you in the face. In BIG SLICK, Elijah Drive delivers a compulsively readable thriller that held me captive until the last page. Can’t wait to read the next one.” —Dwayne Alexander Smith – FORTY ACRES. “An emotional roller coaster of a novel that manages to be profound, moving and completely surprising. A rarity for a thriller, BIG SLICK shocks you by exploring the mystery of the characters in addition to the situation they’re trapped in.” —Ato Essandoh – HBO’s VINYL, DJANGO UNCHAINED, BLOOD DIAMOND, CBS’s ELEMENTARY, BBC America’s COPPER.
Elijah Drive continues to pull both at your heart string and bring you into a new type of life with the former poker player and hired Gunmen. Jon elder alias big slick. In which we learn More about his life. It is one of the most intense, riveting mystery high action adventures that I have read. I Loved It!!!!!
The first book hooked me so my expectations for this one were high. There were times in this book I felt the author had a good vision for the story but the plot lines seemed to take a lot of effort to converge
I am still kind of surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. The first book in the series was okay, but a bit too testosterone-y for me. But Slick is such an interesting, complicated, and likable character that I wanted to give the second book a chance. I'm very glad I did. Slick and Thumper are about as likable as two hired killers can be. The love interest character is okay. I miss Camilla from the first book, though, and I'm still going to say...more female characters, please! Maybe Slick's next partner? And y'all...there's an awesome cat. I should mention (no spoilers), there is one thing Slick does that I found really gross and out of character. But it did not spoil the book, and I look forward to book 3.
Jon Elder, a contract killer with scruples, and his best friend Tommy Olson (Thumper) are back with their opposing viewpoints, which make the story so captivating when other multifarious, callous characters, Petey the cat, and intriguing dialogue come into play. The backdrop is Ohio, where Jon and Thumper are hired to kill a rapper, but nothing is as it seems, developing into a suspenseful plot, slowly revealing why Jon doesn’t like Akron with some twists and turns, deceit, manipulation, and a cat scene that is just too hilarious. Expect the unexpected with a jaw-dropping ending. The author weaves into his narrative past factual events, bigotry, and racism. Hope there is a Book 3.
Excellent! A man with integrity. I enjoyed reading about the different emotions Slick faced as he faced his demons. The loss of Thumper was heartbreaking he was such an intriguing character in the story.
Elijah Drive keeps you in suspense, edge of your seat suspense. Could not put it down. Excellent read for the "who done it" crowd and for those who love a good bad boy. Please keep writing!!!!
How can you like hired killers? But these guys were fun. Killers with morals - who would have thought? Looking forward to meeting up with Big Slick again.
Big Slick and Thumper doing it on their terms as usual
This book as the last has twists and turns and surprises that you don't see coming. You get to learn more about Big Slick's early life. I'm just waiting for the next one.
This is a character driven story about an assassin with a heart. If you want strong and tough with a soft center, this is a great book for you. Drive is a master at developing characters that grow from the stereotype you expect into believable people that might truly exist. The action scenes are well choreographed and plausible, the dialogue superb, and the suspense top notch. A very enjoyable read.
This the second Big Slick book. I loved the first one and my only disappointment in the second is it did not follow up on the first book. It was a story on it’s on, and while very good, didn’t mention anything from the first book. I would have enjoyed it more if there was a continuation from the first book. It is a more hard boiled story with violence, but I enjoyed the characters and story line. I do hope there is a 3rd in the series.
I read Bullets first, fell in love with Elijah Drive's book, then just finished Big Slick and can't wait until the next Elijah Drive book because there is still Chicago Mike! I also will look forward to reading more about "Pops"? and Petey? Will Jo come back into the picture? See ideas already for future Elijah Drive books! YAY!
I enjoyed all the twist and turns, I felt that this story line started out slow but picked up pace towards the middle of the book. I thought book one was a better read!
Fun read with flashes of early Elmore Leonard. Unique and quirky main characters who still remain relatable. Elijah Drive could have a decent future hacking words.
I love the main character, Big Slick but this book wasn't as great as the first book. I still enjoyed it very much but I prefer the first book, can't wait for book 3!
