He’s not just the class pet hamster, he’s SUPER TURBO! In this brand-new series that’s packed with adventure, Captain Awesome’s loyal sidekick is the star of the show!
You know Turbo as the crime-fighting hamster from the Captain Awesome books. But ever wonder what actually goes on when the last school bell rings and Turbo is left to his own devices? After all, what do you think your class pets do all day? You think they sleep, eat, and wait for you to play with them? Well, think again, because Turbo isn’t just any hamster. He’s SUPER TURBO and he’s here to fight evil in and out of the classroom! Along with his superpet companions, Turbo battles everyday evils at Sunnyview Elementary, such as flying ninja squirrels, a gang of evil rats, giant Eraser Dude, and more!
In this first book, Turbo realizes that he’s not the only superpet in town (or in school). As he meets fellow superpets, such as Angelina the guinea pig (a.k.a. Wonder Pig) and Frank the rabbit (a.k.a. Boss Bunny), he also encounters a super a rat who goes by the name of Whiskerface. Can Turbo and the Superpet Superhero League save the school from Whiskerface and his rat pack?
With easy-to-read language, illustrations, and comic panels on almost every page, the Super Turbo chapter books are perfect for emerging readers!
I pick up this book for him and he flops over in bed covering his face with his hands drama king as only a kindergartener can and says “ugh, I’m tired of chapter books.” I smile and he dutifully assumes the story time position. I begin to read and he pretends not to listen while twiddling his car in his hand, flipping and crashing the little red micro machine truck on my knee. Half way through the second page, the truck lays forgotten, his eyes glued to the page. He glances at me and sees I’ve noticed, so he quickly resumes his truck acrobatics. This doesn’t last however, and ultimately he stops feigning ambivalence. We reach the end of the chapter, and, he is shocked when I close the book. He looks at me and says “just one more chapter, we have to read it, I have to know ……”
And so it goes on and on until chapter 4 and he promises we will stop after I read this chapter. When we reach the end of chapter 4 , he says sheepishly but insistently “tomorrow morning mom. Tomorrow morning I need chapter 5”.
So. I think it was a hit. He also insisted on reading the preview for book 2 at the end of the book.
Reminiscent of the Guinea Pig: Pet Shop Private Eye graphic novel series, but set a school instead of a pet shop, Super Turbo is the class pet hamster. Until he is left alone in school during a snow day, he thinks he is the only super hero pet in the school. As he bravely leaves Classroom C, set in the same school as the Captain Awesome series, this spinoff character, Super Turbo realizes he's not the only super hero in the school. He meets Boss Bunny, Wonder Pig (a guinea pig), and Great Gecko. Together they form the Super Pet Superhero League, not a moment too soon, as they discover Whiskerface and his evil rat pack. The first in this animal super hero series, Super Turbo saves the Day! is sprinkled with winning cartoon illustrations by George O'Connor on almost every page. This is a perfect book to give to reluctant readers requiring lots of action and humor in the their book diet.
The backstory and origins of Turbo the class pet AKA Superturbo and how he and other classroom pets formed the Superpet Superhero League. Their Misson: To protect Sunnyview Elementary school from evil doers.
This is a fun, fast-moving, adventurous early chapter book series for kids who love humor, animals and superheroes. Each of the animal superheroes has his/her unique personality and strength. Your kid will fly through this series and will be ready for more! Luckily there are other similar series like Class Pet Squad.
As a long time superhero fan, I find these half-assed children's superhero books annoying. And my kids weren't too enthusiastic about this book either.
An early chapter book. A mix of prose and comics.
Turbo is a classroom pet who has never been out of his classroom. Turbo fancies himself a superhero. After hours, he hears noises, puts on his costume and investigates. He meets another pet from a different classroom who also fancies himself a superhero. And it turns out every classroom has a pet and they're all superheroes. And they all know each other, and Turbo is late to the party. But he's still the main character. And when we've gotten more than halfway through the book and even the characters are wondering why they are bothering being superheroes, a supervillain shows up in the form of a mouse who wants to take over the school and then the world. Super Turbo does manage to sort of save the day.
Turbo, the pet hamster of 2nd-grade Classroom C, is expecting to pass a boring snow day in his cage when he happens to meet two other classroom pets, and then a whole team of class-pets who moonlight as nothing less than superheroes! This was a genuinely funny read, though I was a little dismayed by how much the pets dump on kids who are sent to the principal's office—being sent to the principal's office doesn't make anyone a bad kid! This aside, Super Turbo was a funny and fast-paced early chapter book with a few comic-book-style panels interspersed with traditional paragraph text, which added to the sense of drama and comedy.
How Super Turbo will save the day or even if he needs to is a mystery up until the end of this first book of a graphic novel series. What do you suppose that classroom pets do when the schools are closed and they are left all alone? Do they have another life? Do they even know that there are other class pets in other classrooms? Turbo the Hamster explores his school and finds more that he could have imagined. Interest builds and adventure is right around the corner. Exciting, suspenseful, and climactic. This will keep younger elementary school students engaged and wanting more.
It's a snow day at Sunnyview Elementary, and Turbo the second grade class hamster soon discovers he is not alone. Soon, all of the class pets come together to fight an evil enemy. (Do other schools still allow class pets, in the age of childhood allergies?) With lots of comic-style illustrations and references to super heroes, this is a fun choice for newly emergent readers.
A super cute beginning chapter book about the classroom pets in a school experiencing a snow day. each classroom pet is secretly a superhero. Can they defend the school? Cute early elementary. I laughed out loud.
I read this aloud with my 1st grader. He was engaged, and it was a good enough storyline. There were a lot of characters, so it was kind of difficult to keep track of all of them (the name, the animal, the superhero name). We have another one that we'll be reading soon.
I can think of a couple of students who will enjoy the class pets as super hero’s idea. Also, having adventures at night in a school will be funny to them. Liked the format to support second grade readers
I read this in hopes of book talking it and reading it with my 7-year-old nephew. It didn't knock me off my feet, but I think he will like reading about a hamster (he has one at home). I will re-review after I read it with him.
I liked this book because this Hamster Super Turbo is very smart and quick thinker. he fought with the army of rats by using his quick thinking mind and with the help of his loyal friends Boss Bunny, Green Winger , Wonder Pig , Fantastic Fish , Professor Turtle and The Great Gecko.
Super cute. My eight year old loved it. Each chapter ends on a bit of a cliffhanger so she didn’t want to stop reading it together each night .I already got her the next two books from the series from our library.
My favorite character was Leo the Lizard because I like lizards. The book was about class pets being super heroes. My least favorite character was the guinea pig because I don't really like guinea pigs.
Classroom pets with superhero identities band together to save the school from questionable rats with a questionable plan to take over the school and then the world.
Very hard to follow as a read-aloud. Too many characters, too many voices. Kids enjoyed this one and several went on to read other books in the series.
Hoping this is the same as the reader copy I have saying due February 2021. Just a fun story about superhero class pets and how they save their beloved classrooms, the school and the world!
My best friend's kids are about a year younger than mine and are just now getting into longer fun chapter book reading at night. They LOVED Super Turbo and sent a set to us for my son's birthday. What a fun concept!
Both my kids have class pets in their rooms this year (last year they did not - because COVID - and even though we're pretending the pandemic is over it's not but I know they are loving having animals to care for) so the idea of pets running around doing things while students are gone is a totally relatable and amazing concept for them.
We loved the combination of chapter book/comic book with the illustrations (as graphic novels are HUGE around here) and we loved the funny, engaging, yet simple and calm, plot line. The only downside is there are a LOT of characters (and they all have two names) and that was a little confusing. Overall great book can't wait to read the rest!
