Sophie Mouse and her furry friends prepare for a big storm that’s headed right for Silverlake Forest in this tenth charming book of The Adventures of Sophie Mouse series!
Sophie Mouse has been preparing for the first-ever Silverlake Forest Spring Fling for weeks. She has come up with activities, like a Lily Pad Dance, she’s thought of games to play, and she’s created all sorts of fun hats, masks, and other costumes for her friends to wear. But the day of the Spring Fling is approaching, and Sophie’s twitching whiskers are telling her that the rain is too! Sure enough, it rains and it pours. Will Sophie figure out a way to save the day or will all her hard work go to down the drain?
Poppy Green can talk to animals! Unfortunately, they never talk back to her. So she started writing in order to imagine what they might say and do when humans aren’t watching. Poppy lives on the edge of the woods in Connecticut, where her backyard is often a playground for all kinds of wildlife: birds, rabbits, squirrels, voles, skunks, deer, and the occasional wild turkey.
I liked this one a lot! The kids are all asked to build a boat that they think would float. There was actually a lot of educational content for the reader! We learned the word buoyancy, a little bit about how/why things float, etc. and I love when books introduce stuff like that in such a fun way. We also learned a lot about the reason for rain and what happens if we don't get enough. My kids are storm anxious so they DREAD rain and this was a good example of why its okay and necessary. Finally, the kids work together a lot to help save Winston when his boat gets stuck. Sweet!
So adorable. A book I would’ve loved so much as a second and third grader—little animals living in cute little houses at the bottom of an oak tree doing regular kids stuff like stomping in puddles and building boats to race in the nearby pond—boats out of acorn tops no less! Not only is there the amazing tiny little “cuteness” factor but there’s educational information, too! They go to school and learn all about what floats and what doesn’t (that’s buoyancy, by the way.) This solid info is so well integrated into the story that it isn’t at all pedantic, just perfectly placed so that kids will want to rush outdoors to make their own tiny little boats! Wonderful. And cool activities on the website to supplement the reading.
Green, Poppy It's Raining, It's Pouring (The Adventures of Sophie Mouse #10), CHAPTER BOOK. Simon & Schuster, 2017. $5.99. Content: G.
Sophie Mouse is disappointed when a light rain ruins her family's picnic. But that week at school she and her friends begin learning about the water cycle and about the dangers of droughts. Suddenly Sophie realizes that an occasional downpour is necessary and often welcomed -- even if it means a ruined picnic.
Like the others in the series, this is a fun, quick read with a sympathetic heroine and plenty of engaging illustrations. The large font and short chapters help young readers who are transitioning between picture book stories and ones with chapters. Information about the water cycle is woven in -- just enough to inform but not enough to bog down the story with detail. (No pun intended...)
My 6yo: I loved it! It was nice that Sophie wasn't saying bad things to Winston. Some people might have been upset that his boat was better than theirs but Sophie was nice about it and said, "Good job, Winston!" It was also nice that they got rain.
Mom: Another lovely Sophie story, this one focused primarily on Sophie and her brother Winston. They're working together on their own versions of a school project... Sophie is very encouraging to Winston and perseveres with her own project. A little bit of science about why things float gets thrown in for good measure. 😉😊
This was over all a great book. Talking point: in the first few chapters Sophie wishes for the rain to stop. In chapter 6 she feels like it didn’t rain because she had wished it to stop. Then she wishes for it to rain. There isn’t a big emphasis on it, but might be a talking point.
Cute read with my 4 year old we found at our neighborhood free library. At first, she kept telling me the book was going to be too long. Then she saw it had pictures and enjoyed at bedtime. Now she wants to find a few more.
My 5 year old daughter loves Sophie Mouse, and so do I! She's a brave mouse and I liked this story. I also like that there's a picture on almost every page.
This is my favorite in the series so far. Lots of age appropriate science and nature information intertwined into a fun story! My 7-year-old son gobbled this up.
Sophie’s class is assigned a project to build a boat. I loved the creativity of the students and Winston built a huge boat he could sail in. This was a fun book!
