This series is cute if you want something super far fetched. In this book Ella and Owen try to make a Stinky Fish Cake for their mom's bday and things go awry. They run into a wizard that turns them into newts, a pixie that can change them back (but with conditions) and an oversized stinky fish monster (Honey I blew up the kids style). We read it in a day and it was fun while reading, but not super memorable.

The book has many illustrations sprinkled throughout that, I imagine, would help a young reader to understand the story. The story seems to be fun and fast paced, with the action carrying-on continuously throughout. While the start of the story seems to dovetail with the end of the first book (which I have not read), it doesn't seem out of place, and readers should be able to enjoy the story without having read the previous one.

I brought this home to read out of obligation as I'm trying to read more short chapter books to recommend to 1st/2nd graders. I was not loving it- kind of just slogging through- but my own 4 and 7 year olds noticed and wanted it read out loud. They loved it- lots of laugh out loud silliness and stinky humor. So- the kids would give it a 4, I'd give it a 3, but I'm not really the intended audience, after all.

Miss 3 just plain didn't like it. I'm not sure why not. It had dragons, wizards, fairies, stinky fish cake, and the like. We've also read plenty of other books of a similar level that have interested her but apparently just not this. We laboriously crawled our way through about 3/4 of the book but did not finish.

Read this with the big boys. They gave it 5/5 stars :)
Mum review: The boys mostly loved this book. I lost them for a little while somewhere around the middle, where they actually asked if we could be done reading for the night. Which they typically don't do. But overall they loved all the silliness and laughed out loud during multiple parts of the book.

I’m enjoying this series a lot more than I thought I would. There’s a level of chaos and ridiculousness happening throughout that I find very funny. The main characters are likable, even as they make the questionable choices that lead to the chaos. The art is funny and enhances the story. I’m looking forward to the next volume.

The adventure of Ella & Owen continues in the 2nd book in the series. The twins in this book are searching for a birthday present for their mom-one being a stinky fish cake. The illustration are fun and amusing. My daughter loves the whole series.

This book was a really cute read for my daughter and I at bedtime. I think some of the vocabulary, for a beginner reading book, is a bit challenging. We enjoyed this book, but decided to take a break from Ella and Owen books for now.

Not my favorite. It was definitely geared towards a pretty young audience. I would suggest this for boys who are having a hard time getting into reading chapter books. Lots of illustrations and pretty short pages.
