Augustine "Og" Mandino II (December 12, 1923 – September 3, 1996) was an American author. He wrote the bestselling book The Greatest Salesman in the World. His books have sold over 50 million copies and have been translated into over twenty-five different languages. He was the president of Success Unlimited magazine until 1976 and is an inductee of the National Speakers Association's Hall Of Fame.

Mandino was born December 12, 1923. According to the 1930 U.S. Census, he was named after his paternal grandfather.

Mandino was once the editor of a high school paper and planned to attend the University of Missouri's journalism school. But in the summer of 1940, before Mandino was able to enter college, his mother died suddenly from a massive heart attack. This happened while Mandino's mother was in the kitchen preparing his lunch. After the incident, Mandino decided to work in a paper factory until 1942. Afterwards, Mandino joined the United States Army Air Corps where he became a military officer and a bombardier. He flew for thirty bombing missions over Germany on board a B-24 Liberator during World War II. It was also during this time that Mandino flew with fellow pilot and movie star, James Stewart. Mandino kept a personalized 8 X 10 photograph of Stewart. This photograph hung on the wall of his home office where he wrote his books.

After his military duties, Mandino discovered that many companies were not hiring many former bomber pilots. As a result, he became an insurance salesman. Traveling on the road and sitting in bars at night, Mandino became an alcoholic. He was unable to keep a job. As a result, Mandino's wife, together with their only child, left him. One wintry November morning in Cleveland, Mandino almost tried to commit suicide. But as he sorted through several books in a library, volumes of self-help, success and motivation books captured Mandino's attention. He selected some titles, went to a table and began reading. Mandino followed his visit to the library with more visits to many other libraries around the United States. He read hundreds of books that dealt with success, a pastime that helped him alleviate his alcoholism. It was in a library in Concord, New Hampshire, where he found W. Clement Stone's classic, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude, a book that changed Mandino for the better.

Mandino eventually became a successful writer. His works were inspired by the Bible and influenced by Napoleon Hill, W. Clement Stone, and Emmet Fox.

What if you could get an overview of classic self-help literature that in itself is a roadmap to success?

Such a thing would look s lot like Og Mandino's University of Success. The book is arranged into ten semesters, each one focused on the foundations for a success theme: taking stock of where you are now, developing s vision for your life, aligning your thoughts with your desires, becoming your own cheerleader, mastering time, attracting money, enlisting the aid of other people, dealing with the challenges of success, maintaing your success, and enjoying your success.

The book's principles are sound. The authors who have contributed are the people who wrote the books that are the foundations of modern self-help. Pick one idea from the book, master it, and then come back and dip in to pick your next idea to master.

Self-help junkies will want to read this to discover some now-forgotten forefathers in the field. But anyone who wants to fully be themselves will want to read this.

This book is fantastic, I’ll definitely read this book once a year. The views on success and in life in this book are relatable and put a lot of things in perspective for me. There were a few things in the book I wanted to push onto my friends but, I realized they had to have the mindset to accept what they’d be received and be able to internalize it. Overall a great book. I’m glad I purchased it and read it after Les Brown mentioned it in one of his presentations.

I had the great pleasure to meet Og Mandino after a presentation he gave just a few months before he passed away. One of the purest souls I've ever met. This book is a collection of perspectives, not what I had expected, but very good nonetheless.

The book presents a selection of short essays and stories that each illustrate or illuminate a particular point of attitude and/or behavior that are extremely useful to worldly success. These little clips from some of the most profound writers on self-cultivation at the time of compilation, are organized into 'Semesters'.

Going through this book confirmed many of the things I learned on the farm, it also broadened and deepened my view of how the world works and what it takes to do well in it.

While anyone, at any level, can learn from or reconnect with the timeless lessons in this book,it was the first book I recommended to a young friend who was learning how to get along in the work-a-day world after high school. It is broad, inspiring, and informational, and can be consumed in small bites without being overwhelming.

I have to give this book a five star review, since that is what I got in 1994 when I read it the first time as a 24-year-old. I've read parts of it during the years, and have to say that self-help books don’t do it for me any more. I'm approaching 50 and have been taught the best life lessons by life itself. Striving towards perfection and success might be helpful at times, but bringing all of these lessons into your life at all times will probably make most people miserable. Today's rating would therefore be three stars.

It is funny that school teaches us a lot and majorly skips how we can succeed with those things. I stumbled on this book at a neighbour's place and (although a huge book) I made up my mind I must read it. I downloaded a PDF copy of it and read through 50 courses of different lecturers and faculties in the university of success. One of the frw books i rate with a "5" - Great book!

Unfortunately, it dissapointed me a lot. It's about everything and nothing at the same time. Somehow I managed to finish it but wouldn't recommend it to anyone

Žodžiu, šaknys to čia.

This is a great collection of principles written from great people who have found success in their own rights. With the amount of self-help and success books constantly being cranked out every year (some helpful, some not so much) it is good to return to many books that started the self-help industry. This is a great read and I wish I would have read this during my time in university. I believe this, with its many lessons and semester breakdowns, was more helpful than the majority of classes I took to acquire a degree.

So many timeless life lessons in here, which still hold up today. This book is about 40 years old, and some chapters are from books published in the 1920’s and 1930’s, but it’s so interesting that no matter what era, it’s always “crazy, fast-paced times”.

The content wasn't exactly flat, but it didn't really have the 'zing' of some other works out there.
