Feathers and Flesh is a fable told through beautiful poetry and eye-catching artwork. It tells the story of an owl who goes on a quest to prevent her kingdom of night from ending by keeping the sun from rising. This book was written as a companion to the band(Avatar)'s album, however this book would be great for anyone to read not just Avatar fans. That being said the best way to read this book is with the album telling the tale too. The story of the owl is both tragic and thought provoking, holding up a mirror to show us the flaws that can sometimes blind us from truth. Her interactions with the other animals she meets along her journey give the story good complexity that makes Feathers and Flesh great. As I mentioned before the poems are very well written and the illustrations were perfect for the book. Overall I thought this book was amazing and would highly recommend it to everyone. For this book I picked my favorite song from the album Regret/House of Eternal Hunt.

"Sworn to the starlight
Tonight is the night
Call from the wild, I can feel it
Endless horizon
No sun in sight
House of eternal hunt"

Update: Avatar has had new copies of this printed and is available at their official store.

The hardcover copy for this is sold out on Avatar's European store, but a kind stranger on facebook sent me pics of the pages on messenger so I was able to read it. This is the book that Avatar (the best Swedish metal band ever, at least in my current opinion) frontman Johannes Eckerström wrote as a companion to the Feathers and Flesh album.

It is the story of an owl who wants to stop the sun from rising, because the eagle arrives to put an end to the owl's reign. She meets many different animals along the way, but sadly she learns nothing from her experiences. A poem in the form of dialogue precedes the lyrics of each song, along with illustrations. The audio book is currently in Avatar's European store, but if anyone is ever able to find and buy the hardcover book, do it. It is definitely worth paying for.

Avatar is one of my favourite bands because they create amazing things, and Feathers and Flesh is definitely one of them! Every word from this book is also on the album. Johannes (the singer) is the storyteller. He reads us the story and the songs are woven into it (so it's: story, song, story, song etc.) Each part of the story and each song is incredibly beautiful. I think it's brilliant that they published an actual book to go along with the album. The artwork truly supports the story. I loved it!

Johannes is a lyrical genius, and together with the songs from their Feathers & Flesh album, it makes the whole experience epic. The fairytale is sweet, sad and so well thought out, by the end, it makes one think through things in life.

Brilliant. I’ve waited to get my hands on a copy of the Feathers & Flesh book for ages and it was a gift to be able to read it along side listening to the album.
