Mango & Bambang #3

Tiny Tapir Trouble

Rate this book
Mango and Bambang's adventures continue in the third book of this charming illustrated series about a little girl and a tapir, described by The Sunday Times as having real charm reminiscent of Paddington. When a small but mischievous tapir guest comes to stay with Mango Allsorts and Bambang in the busy city, things soon get into a rather troublesome tangle.

The adventures of Mango Allsorts (a girl who's good at all sorts of things) and Bambang (an Asian tapir who loves wearing hats) continue in this collection of four short stories ranging from an ocean rescue and a trip to the City Botanical Gardens to wrangling a rambunctious baby tapir and entering the City Chess Tournament. Chic black-and-white illustrations with bursts of turquoise compliment these heartwarming tales that teach the benefits of being different, the value of public libraries, and what it means to be family.
Family had nothing to do with who you looked like, what you were good at or where you started out. It was about who you belonged with. Who made you feel most completely yourself, even if that self was sometimes sad or jealous or had a blocked-up snout.

The third book in this series, and it keeps getting better and better with each page.

So I wasn't really planning on reading this one yet, I wanted to save it, but yesterday I couldn't sleep, and reading a horror book wasn't helping at all. I needed something cute, something fluffy, something that would make me laugh. And thus I decided to read this one!

The book is once again filled with several new stories about Mango and Bambang. They go to the beach, they meet a new (and annoying) friend, Bambang gets sick, and more! I really loved all of them, though I have to say I was a bit disappointed that the tiny tapir only got one story. Well, disappointed more because I thought he would be the main point in this book. But after the story happened, I was kind of glad that it was just one story. Because Guntur was just an annoying brat, and I was sad that he couldn't be nicer, and kept making sure Bambang looked bad. :(

But the other stories were wonderful. My favourite is definitely the first one with the sea. I loved what happened there, and I was so happy for Bambang. He had a bad start, but he showed how awesome he was.

I do have to say I had quite a laugh at how Guntur was delivered. :P It is good that he is tiny, otherwise he would have needed a bigger box.

The stories do connect, so be sure to read them in order that they are in the book, otherwise you might just miss stuff, and that would be a shame.

Mango is still a wonderful girl, and I really like her so much. She is sweet, she does her best, she is a great friend. I do wish we could see some stories of her in school (maybe Bambang can visit her there).

Bambang is the best tapir ever, well, not that I got a lot of comparison material, but I am sure Bambang will be the best even with other tapir stories should they ever get there. :P I still have to get used to the fact he was talking, I had forgotten he did that.
He still has a lovely hat addiction, and I just looked forward to see his new hats.

There are also illustrations and I still love them to bits!

All in all, I can't wait for a new book about this duo, with new stories, new adventures! I also hope we get to see the dad one day. It reminds me a bit of old cartoons were you wouldn't see the parents (or only halfway).

Highly recommended!

Whenever a Manga & Bambang book arrives it comes along with tugging a cloud of joy and a feel-good dance of Tapir-happiness (the second reference makes more sense when you’ve read the books; which by the way you absolutely must do).

Mango & Bambang: Tiny Tapir Trouble contains four stories. I think compared to the first two books in the series Tiny Tapir Trouble has more for readers to think about then the adventures of the first two. I really loved the message of the first story, Seaside Rescue, which is not to judge someone different. As well the final story, Park Games, which is about cheating.

I remain completely in love with Bambang and Mango, though I hope not to see his tiny cousin again (no matter how adorable he looks in illustrations) and can’t wait for the next book.

Kapitel 2: Bambang blir sjuk

In this book, Mango and Bambang go to the beach where at first Bambang feels unwelcome but then he and Mango become heroes. In the second story Bambang is sick and Mango must figure out how to help him feel better. In the third story Bambang starts to feel a little insecure when his rambunctious and lively little cousin Guntar comes for a visit. And in the final story Mango is participating in a chess tournament when Bambang notices something strange going on.

Lovable Bambang and Mango are such a delight to spend time with. I love seeing the way these two friends look out for each other and help each other grow. Bambang has some tough lessons to learn about others in this book, but they are all really good things for kids to think about (and the stories are still fun, even if he faces some challenges). Highly recommended for family read alouds and lower grade readers who like friendship stories or animal stories.

“Bambang leant into Mango. Mango, who encouraged him and nursed him and was there for him on the good and the not-so-good day’s. He understood. Family had nothing to do with who you looked like, what you were good at or where you started out. It was about who you belonged with. Who made you feel most completely yourself, even if that self was sometimes sad or jealous or had a blocked-up snout.”

Third entry in the series is similar in style and substance but ridiculously charming and would be great for a parent to read with a younger child.

We are loving this series - feeling sad when we finish one and have to wait for the next.
Mango and Bambang are beautiful characters who feel like friends.

the magic has gone a bit, Guntur is a pretty horrible character and it felt like each story is trying to force an inspiring message and fit a story around it, rather than allowing the message to arise organically from a good story

Mango and Bambang are two most adorable characters. The writing is lovely, and the stories amused me greatly. Plus, the book design is wonderful to look at. Definitely recommended for your children!

As always with this series, both the stories and illustrations were delightful. Violet and I both love the characters, and I liked the way the stories all tied together. Definitely will buy the next one.
