FRAUGHT EXCURSIONS Nejima and Lilina are still trying to recover from the news that the government has assigned each of them to the other as a partner in marriage, but their families have already organized a group camping trip for the pair. Lilina, however, is determined to help Nejima and his childhood crush, Misaki, to continue their burgeoning romance in spite of the government notice—so she invites Misaki along. Then a panicked Nejima invites his friend, Nisaka, to act as his backup. But Nisaka has his own mysterious agenda, and he’s none too impressed with Lilina’s plans. Each of the four high schoolers will have to face the facts: It’s hard to get what you want when you don’t know what that is!

Okay so the synopsis for this volume on GoodReads and everywhere matches the one for the first volume so I'll tell you a liiiitttleee bit about the plot so you have an idea of how it's all progressing!

This volume is once again, quite slow, and our group is heading off camping! It's all the parents idea, and Lilina invites Misaki, prompting Nejima to invite his friend Nisaka with them. Lilina is still trying to push Nejima towards Misaki but Nisaka gives her some food for thought as well as giving us some more insight in to how the world of this manga is run and what the potential consequences and treatment are for those who disobey.

I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like we're being queer baited when it comes to Nisaka, I mean, things are alluded to about him and his feelings and I don't know whether I'm reading it wrong or right. There's also clearly something going on with he and Misaka, and I was hoping we'd get some answers about it in this volume, but it might have to be next volume. We only get some half heard, shady conversations which kind of disappointed me a bit.

The good thing about this volume is that it provides us some more insight in to the characters. Nejima may be an idiot at times, but he's kind of harmless and it was nice to learn some more about him seeing as he's the main character and I was kind of iffy about him in the first volume. Lilina I actually really like. I find her quite relatable at points, and she speaks a lot of sense regarding how the world works. I actually really like her and I get where she's coming from. It was nice to see some more of her and the different sides of her in this volume. Misaki...I find her really shady I'm not going to lie. I feel like the mystery with her is getting a wee bit too dragged out by now, because we still don't know what her deal is. I'm not really getting a good vibe from her though. Sometimes I wonder if this is going to do a 180 and change my entire perspective.

Finally we have Nisaka. I like Nisaka. He's kind of a bit shady but he doesn't give me a weird vibe like Misaki. I do wonder about him, and I do feel like if I'm not reading it wrong then we're being baited, but I could be wrong. I'm so curious about him and his past and what the deal is with him and Misaki.

Love and Lies Volume 2 continues the slow but steady pace and this volume focuses more on the characters and getting to know them better and see the relationships between them all. After Nisaka talking to Lilina and laying out the potential consequences, I feel like the tide may be turning when it comes to Nejima and Lilina and this love triangle thingy might be developing properly...or maybe it's a love square. This volume is a little bit extra at points, but I'm mostly intrigued by Nisaka and I'm curious to find out what the deal is, although I am hoping the pace picks up a bit more!

Neat ideas

Again, neat ideas but you can tell this is more for a male audience, which is fine just not what I'm looking for

I haven't read the book series for a long time 'cause I originally thought about dropping it after the first volume 'cause of the ending scene, which steered the story in a direction I wasn't expecting and I wasn't sure what to think of it. However, it is not the first book I would read where there are also characters who are not just dull heterosexual, so I just decided to continue reading (also 'cause it is not a stereotypical love story).

It is interesting to observe how the four main roles in this story interact with each other. Somehow they all like each other, and several also love each other, but it's not so simple. On the one hand, there is the government that firmly decides who you marry, you can not really refuse it either, which makes the whole thing more complicated. I also have the feeling that this manga series does not end with a happy ending, 'cause even now you can not satisfy any of the characters 100%. Everyone has their own needs and feelings for someone else, which makes it almost impossible for everyone to be happy in the end. It is a hopeless love. The only question is which love will not blossom at the end.

Although they will disappear leaving nothing behind right now, these lights are so desperately falling in love. Friends, crushes, fiancees, none of that matters.

But maybe this story also ends like the quote from the second volume given above.

Ahh..this was just lovely! I really like all of the characters and is it weird that I'm rooting for all of them to get the guy? Anyways, the art was great again, the characters relatable and the story kept me guessing in a good way!

I was constantly confused who was who. (The two guys) but I blame myself haha. It's really getting hard who to root for! But still the story is very nice and I can't wait to dig into volume 3!

Aside from the secrets that they're keeping, these kiddos are pretty solid at communicating and that's so refreshing for the genre.

I could do without so much fan service though.

Updated on 11/5/2020:

Still 4 stars, but I really enjoyed the camping trip more the second time around. Nisaka's cooking incompetence, Neji's fanboying over kofun, and even the confrontation between Lilina and Nisaka. I enjoyed all of it and wished that there were more slice-of-life moments in future volumes. I mean, they're there, but then the Incarnation of Drama Porn rears its ugly head and the drama completely takes over. Still, I live for these simple moments and the casual interactions with the characters.

Original review posted on 7/23/2019:

This one I enjoyed more because I felt a deeper connection between Neji and Lilina, as well as seeing more interactions between Nisaka and Neji. Neji is a better character when he is surrounded by others and stops overthinking every little thing. I know she's not everyone's cup of tea, but I adore Lilina both in design and character. I love how blunt and straightforward she is, a rarity when dealing with romance. Her interactions with Neji seem sincere and genuine and I love how neither are afraid to fight or bicker with the other when in a disagreement. I know I'll probably be saying this the entire series, but I really hope the end up together because I feel like they have a deeper connection than Neji has with Misaki.

There was more discussed regarding the Yukari System, but honestly it isn't interesting and feels like it's there to create conflict. Yes, I understand that the entire story revolves around this government system and is the reason behind the central conflict, but it's still uninteresting and unnatural. It didn't dampen the entire story, though, and Nisaka's confrontation with Lilina in the woods regarding the Yukari System felt more natural than the exposition dump in the beginning of the volume. Overall, this was a fun second volume and I'm loving the growing dynamic of this bunch of hormonal, love-sick teens.

Oh my

Talk about a harem in a manga where there really isnt a choice. This has forbidden love (kinda), a relationship that feel awkward, and some BL for those who like that.
