The culmination of more than 25 years of clinical work and research, this is the authoritative presentation of cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Written by the treatment's developers, the book includes session-by-session guidelines for implementation, complete with extensive sample dialogues and 40 reproducible client handouts. It explains the theoretical and empirical underpinnings of CPT and discusses how to adapt the approach for specific populations, such as combat veterans, sexual assault survivors, and culturally diverse clients. The large-size format facilitates photocopying and day-to-day use. Purchasers also get access to a webpage where they can download and print the reproducible materials.
CPT is endorsed by the U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense, the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies, and the U.K. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a best practice for the treatment of PTSD.
See also Getting Unstuck from PTSD by Patricia A. Resick, Shannon Wiltsey Stirman, and Stefanie T. LoSavio, which presents CPT in a guided self-help format for trauma survivors.
So, I went through this book with my therapist, and it actually opened up my eyes to stuff I didn't want to acknowledge. This is a great tool to use to make you think deeply of everything that has happened and how it has effected you mentally, physically, and emotionally. It does not make you Think deeply into the traumatic event, just how it made you change/feel.
For me, I used this for MST. I will admit, it is hard to get through, because you just don't want to acknowledge a lot of the stuff, but it does help a lot. For me, the hardest part was the Challenge Questions, especially when it came to the esteem and Power/Control. I have an extra copy (since initial I wrote in) and plan on using it to help me in the future. This actually gave some amazing stuff to help with future problems as well.
Cognitive processing therapy for PTSD is an effective treatment for addressing this disorder. As a clinician, to experience clients moving from rigid, fearful, and inflexible thoughts and behaviors is awe-inspiring. I would recommend this book to any professional trained in delivering this therapeutic model. Your clients will thank you and become advocates for therapy and this model.
so much richer than i expected it to be (addressing factors like therapist readiness for CPT, extensive summary of impressive research findings) while also being very accessible. good breadth of info for different traumas, sufficient detail for things like which trauma to use as the index trauma, getting buy in, etc. this is such a comprehensive treatment manual. CPT is great.
Recovery from PTSD and trauma is possible and this manual guides clinicians through that process. It is a step by step manual of treating those with a history of trauma.
This is a clinical manual for providing CPT. I only recommend it to clinicians currently providing CPT and or in process of and being supervised under CPT instruction.
Fantastic book on another evidence based model for PTSD tx. Enjoyable and thorough. The modules on beliefs have proven to be beneficial for clients. Works well with PTSD and guilt
CPT is an effective treatment for those suffering from the symptoms of PTSD. It is a brief therapy at 12 weeks and very powerful way to view stuck points that keep us from healing from trauma.
