She saves him from a fire, then steals his heart without even trying. When white hot attraction kicks in, sparks fly!
Francey Cordaro is a dedicated firefighter, devoted daughter and a loyal friend who has made her way in a man’s world. She rejects material goods, doesn’t give a whit about her striking looks and focuses on saving lives, spending time with her family and friends, working out and playing poker with the guys. Until she meets Alex Templeton.
A wealthy businessman, Alex is the epitome of success in every area of his life. A decent man, he returns home to run the family company when his father takes ill and his brother loses his way. What he can’t control is his reaction to the sexy firefighter who dragged him from near death. She’s gorgeous, fun-loving and challenges him at every turn. But she refuses a relationship with him.
With differences that rival champagne vs. beer, uptown galas vs. karaoke bars, and the world of high finance vs. the reality of walking into burning buildings, their relationship seems doomed. Or is it?
Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first 'romance,' a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists - and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.
Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women's college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who'd attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, "I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that."
Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she'd again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn Shay sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.
Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-one books for Harlequin, nine mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format.
Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations - readers say they feel they know the people in her books - and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.
Even in light of her writing success, that initial love of teaching never wavered for Kathryn. She finished out her teaching career in 2004, retiring from the same school where her career began. These days, she lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children. "My life is very full," she reports, "but very happy. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to pursue and achieve my dreams."
I liked the development of this relationship and the dilemma it shows about the job of a firefighter. The secondary romance was a nice look at the other side. What seemed like the obvious answer at first was not so cut and dried by the end. Firefighter Fancey saves the life of CEO Alex when he fell asleep in his warehouse that caught on fire.
Francesca Cordaro, Firefighter, saves the life of Alex Templeton, a very handsome, a very rich man. Not only is he appreciative of her life-saving efforts, he can’t help put see the beautiful woman underneath the soot.
He is immediately attracted to her, but she seems to be rather immune to his charms. That is something that Alex just doesn’t understand.
Francey is attracted, but their lifestyles are so different. Her father, also a firefighter, married a rich woman who just couldn’t live with the man she loved, but placed himself in danger every day. She abandoned him and their three children.
What Francey sees in her future is that Alex will do the same … be unable to cope with what she does. She doesn’t believe in Better to have loved and lost ….
Alex is determined to keep her in his life … as a friend if nothing else until he can worm himself under her armor. But is Francey going to stick to her guns and not give in her to attraction? Their relationship seems doomed before it even begins.
This is a romance that deals with love, lost love, relationships, differences, newly found love … all things romantic. You can’t help but like the characters. Francey loves her job, her family and friends, her dog, Alex is more of a loner, and he has had some differences with his family, but Francey makes everything better in his world.
This is first in a series that features the Rockford Fire Department.
Many thanks to the author and her assistant, Stacy Stephens who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
This was a very good book. Francesca was a firefighter, just like her grandpa, dad, and brother. Her mother walked out and left her husband and children because she couldn't stand the stress of living with a man who constantly put his life on the line for others. Francesca's dad never got over it. When she meets Alex she realizes immediately that she can't get involved with him. He comes from wealth, just like Francey's mother. She fears involving herself with Alex would end badly just like her parent's relationship all those years ago.
When Alex went down the hall at the hospital to thank the firefighter who pulled him from his burning warehouse, he's stunned to find its a woman and a beautiful one at that. He's instantly iintrigued. But she wants nothing to do with him, something he's not used to when it comes to the opposite sex. He manages to convince her they can just be friends but the more time he spends in her company the more he thinks about a future with her as more than just a friend. Yet the one thing he can't deal with is the dangers of her job, in spite of the fact she warned him and he told her differently. Now it looks as though one, or both, of them are going to get hurt.
I really liked the slow build up to their relationship. They truly did become friends first. There was also the added tension of Francey's mother reentering the picture. She wants to be part of her kids lives now and in attempting to do so, she butts heads with Francey's dad, her ex. In the midst of everything going on in Francey's life, she's still battling fires and putting herself in danger. This was a good one especially if you are a fan of firefighter romance.
3.5* rounded up. Francey (Francesca) is a firefighter (I know- a female firefighter!). Her grandpa, dad, and a brother are also firefighters. She and her crew get called out to a fire. She rescues Alex, who fell asleep at his desk. I like both both Francesca and Alex. Fran is a tomboy and is one of the guys. Alex sees her and is intrigued. It helps that she doesn't fawn all over him. They play at being friends and later have things they need to work out. I liked the firefighting terms and learned a little. I thought it was realistic at how a busy, city fire department is, with the stress of the job, but also the stress it puts on the family. There is a strong secondary story-line here too with Fran's parents, Ben and Diana who divorced when she was 3. The fire that Alex is saved from; that was predictable and I had wondered, at first, if that would have been a suspense point. Hint- it's not. Anyway, I was right. Points off for this: "But it was her eyes that snared him. They were huge, almost translucent and the oddest color, indigo fanning out to deep purple." This is NOT a paranormal! (Natural) purple eyes do not exist! Ripped Bodice Bingo: firefighters square!
Another enjoyable story about firefighters. Alex and Francey’s story was good, but I think I enjoyed the other couple in the book more, which was Diana and Ben.
Feel the Heat This book starts out with Fransceca and she's saving the life of a man who's unconscious from the fire in the building. Alex thought it was a man that had saved him as he goes to thank her in the hospital. He soon is giving her food and everything else she wants, she had saved his life. They get along very well til she learns who he is and that he knows her mother-the woman who left them when Fran was very young and she's attempting to get back into their lives again. Fran just wants to do her firefighting job as she's now been accepted into the family at work but during her 2 month time off to heal the broken bone she does go out to eat with Alex... she's from the working class and he's from the other side of the tracks and she sees what that did to her own parents. Love all the fire fighting talk and how things happened, the investigations and how they determine the causes. Enjoyed the jokes and facts about firemen. Travel and locale of Rockford is very appealing=can just picture the town in upstate NY they could be referring to as we have relatives there-very nice area. Enjoyed learning more about the career and how it started at the visit to the museum. I feel like I've been there-so descriptive. Alex wants more than just being friends and she's upset because she really wants the same but he leaves...will they get back together and hash it all out? Her mother wants a second chance....hot steamy sex scenes but really enjoyed the fire mysteries more and learning new words. Can't wait to read more from this series. Excerpt from Risking it All is included at the end. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end. I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

With differences that rival champagne vs. beer, uptown galas vs. karaoke bars, and the world of high finance vs. the reality of walking into burning buildings, their relationship seems doomed. Or is it? *** Interesting fact: bestselling author Kathryn Shay spent five years riding fire trucks with a large city fire department, eating in their firehouses and interviewing hundreds of America's Bravest. I love how into the 'front' this book gets. Everything that is done, whether it is cooking, going to restaurants, fire calls, accident calls, or family crisis', you feel like you are actually there.... 5 stars.
I enjoy Shay's firefighter romances. In this book, firefighter Francey Cordaro rescues businessman Alex Templeton from a fire, but during the rescue she slips on the stairs and breaks her arm.
They are recovering in the same hospital and start to get to know each other then. When Francey finds out that Alex is the CEO of Templeton Industries and is wealthy, she doesn't want to pursue anything with him, though he tries. She has a prejudice against white-collar folks since her mother abandon Francey, her brothers, and her father, Ben, when Francey was young because she couldn't handle being afraid every time her husband went to work. Diana ended up marrying a wealthy man and starting her own designer fashion store. Diana lives a life full of material wealth, something Francey disdains.
The fire that started in the basement may be arson so that mystery is a story line throughout, but the main story is Francey and Alex being friends, and then seeing if they can be more than friends. What puts a kink in things is that Francey's mother, Diana comes back and tries to get back into both Francey and Ben's lives.
Shay's firefighter romances are filled with firefighter trivia, exciting fire rescue scenes, romance, and fun. The prose zings along.
Francy Cordaro rescued Alex Templeton when she was fighting a fire in his office building. When they actually meet later there is instant attraction between them. She doesn't want a relationship because when Francy was a child her mother left her family because she couldn't handle her husband's dangerous job as a firefighter. Francy loves her job and doesn't want to give it up but also doesn't want the man she loves to live in fear that she may get hurt. So no relationships for her. Francy and Alex agree to be friends. Let's see how that works for them.
This book very clearly shows how dangerous it is to be a firefighter but also how hard it is on their families. It's quite an eye opener. When I saw this was about a female firefighter I wanted to read it right away. I liked the twist of a woman firefighter with the man being the worrier. All the characters were likable. I'd like to know more about the members on Francy's team.
What a surprise when Francy's mother comes back. That's a story in itself.
A very realistic look into the lives of firefighters and the ones that love and worry about them.
I enjoyed the unique perspective of the significant other being a man (Alex) who struggled to deal with the danger and unpredictability of the life of his firefighter girlfriend (Francesca) and how they both needed to make adjustments for each other after spending years not needing to worry about anyone else.
The parallel story of Francesca's parents who are attempting to overcome the issues that drove her mother away when she was just an infant is one that manages to enhance the overall story as these characters' example and guidance helps Alex and Francesca address their issues.
I look forward to reading more about the members of Rockford Fire Department
A story that touched close to home for this wife and mother of firefighters.
Like some of the other reviewers, I had a problem with Francey. I couldn't get fully behind her reasons for not having a relationship with Alex and, I thought, she was a little unfair about his reaction to the danger of her job. He needed to work through his worry and fear and find a way to deal with it, but she needed to be more understanding of why he would worry.
Also, this doesn't show up until the next book but they get married within 6 months. Given Alex and Francey's trouble, I think they need a little more counseling and more than six months before they tie the knot. It's not that I don't believe they can do it, I just think they shouldn't have rushed it!
I absolutely loved this book. The characters were so interesting and real. The storyline palpable and at times heart wrenching. I enjoyed the progression and development of the relationship between Francesca and Alex. Their sensual dance to know each other and become friends first allowed them the benefits of honesty without sacrificing self. When they finally coupled, it was special for both of them. There is the background story of Francesca's parents that scare her relative to her relationship, but it works out. This was a tender, exciting, love story about the lives of firefighters and the people in their lives. No spoilers here. You just have to read the book yourself.
Really a nice discovery. It's not the usual story about the handsome firefighter saving the damsel in danger ... no, here it's the sexy firefighter Francesca who saves the equally handsome businessman Alex from a burning building. A story by no means trivial, realistic both in the evolution of the relationship of friendship and love between the two, and in the fears and dilemmas that are described in those who have directly or directly an emotional relationship with those who risk their lives for work.
I do like a book with a female in a male dominated world, so that part was good. My eyes always start rolling when a character has green eyes, for the love of all that is holy, only 2% of the population has green eyes, dear authors, don't do it just don't. Alex was a bit of a dick really so I couldn't get too invested in the relationship. Then there was Francey's dad Ben who had a nasty habit of grabbing his ex by the arm or arms, sorry but that is bullying and low key violence, so he didn't get the tick from me either.
This book was published in 1999 but I'm only now reading this in 2019, 20 years later. Even so the dilemmas in the book feel very current. A woman in a dangerous job, and a man who has to decide if he can live with that. I also liked the subplot with the parents which gave the opportunity to see things from a slightly different perspective. Would recommend a read. I'll be reading the rest in the series.
Kathryn Shay writes amazing stories about firefighters both male and female, and this book is another perfect example. Feel the Heat is the story of Frankie, a female firefighter from a family of firefighters. The story highlights the emotional difficulties encountered by both firefighters themselves and their families. I look forward to reading the remainder of the series.
A well written book with great depth of characters. Really gives you an insight into a firefighter's job and what their families go through. The characters were relatable and it was almost a double story, with Diana and Ben (and the main characters Alex and Francesca). It was a great book but I won't be in a rush to read the next in the series as it is quite an emotionally draining book - lots of emotions and angst. Not a light hearted read.
It starts out with firefighter Francey Cordaro saving the life of Alex Templeton. They begin a relationship but Francey is not happy because her father, Ben and her mother, Diana were in this same situation many years ago until they finally divorced. Diana could not accept how dangerous firefighting was and Ben could not give up his job and how much he loved it. Francey could see the parallels between her mom and dad’s life and her own with Alex. This is a very well written story!!!
I your the Hidden Cove firefighter series by Kathryn Shah and this series seems to be just as good. Her ability to make characters so likeable and stories so interesting is a testament to her talent as a great storyteller I would recommend her books to everyone
Found on FreeBooksy, I was looking for a light read and this was halfway it - the book had more great and serious substance than I was expecting - meant as a compliment. I live in Rockford and was hoping it was about ours, but nope. Great story, characters you care about, quite exciting, great ending.
Francesca loved her job as a firefighter. It was what had split her parents marriage, but she couldn't quit. Alex fell in love with her when she rescued him from a fire. But he realized what can get she was regularly in and couldn't stand the sorry of each fire call. Did she face the same heartbreak as her parents?
This was a beautiful story of new love. Love lost and renewed. Family. Friendship. Brotherhood. Heroism. There were actually 2 stories in one and could have been 2 different enjoyable books. There was the new love of Alex and Francey which began with a friendship first. Ben and Diana, France's parents, who fond their way back to each other. Would like to read more in the series.
I appreciate the author's development of characters & the author's insight into the minds of two persons dealing with their individual past histories as they effect the development of a romantic relationship, while each brings with him/her a very different type of vocational interest & commitment. ...Much thanks for a good read.
I started to read, didn’t like the writing style and over a year later tried it again. Got past the first chapter and started to enjoy it. I liked the fact the explained terms non firefighters would know. Even nice to have Francey and Alex’s view and Ben and Dianna.
This one is so family oriented. But having Francey being the firefighter brings the spotlight to the women who do due this for a living. But it also shows what till it takes on relationships and families.
Loved this story & how it built up to an amazing ending! Loved the supporting characters. Mostly loved that I could feel the emotions of the characters! And there were some HOT scenes for these firefighters! 🔥
And we burn all the way. As en emotional person, this was an emotional roller coaster for me with need of tissues. I loved the characters and the story and I hated putting the book down whenever I had to. I so enjoy the firefighter series by this author.
This was an okay read. There just wasn’t enough meat to the story for me and was too one dimensional IMO. Although somewhat rushed and tidy, the ending was sweet.
Excellent book - love Shay's writing. I root for the firefighters and police, but then I think about the loved ones staying home and I feel so sorry for them. The worry is never ending and it takes strong people on both sides to make a good marriage.
