The novella is centered on Charlie Rant, a young man who learns that his brother has been hospitalized after being severally beaten while rum running for the Caprice family. Unaware of his brother's illegal activities, Charlie is confronted by a mysterious woman who tells him about a rivalry that was supposed to have ended two years ago in a speakeasy—when the Durante family was exterminated by the Caprices. However, someone has resurrected the Durante name, and with the Caprice shipments being stolen and their rum runners being murdered, the clash of the mobsters has started all over again. Charlie's brother had one more shipment to deliver, and Charlie learns first hand that both families will kill for it. Caught between an old feud, Charlie has to put aside his morals in order to be a rum runner for one night so that he can save his brother and, inevitably, himself.
Drenched in action and twisted in suspense, this sequel to Speakeasy: A Novella steps outside of the glittery jazz world and into the dangerous voyage that made rum row notorious during the Prohibition Era.

Slowly pivoting around, Kate’s beautiful gaze lunged at him from where she stood. “And he still hasn’t learned his lesson.”
Anthony swallowed hard. “What lesson would that be?”
“Don’t fuck with the woman who knows your secrets.”

We pick up in Rum Runner a few years where Speakeasy left off, being introduced to Charlie. Charlie is a law student who has several rum runners in the family (basically the transporters of illegal alcohol) and his brother has been hospitalized after being caught up in a long-running feud between two mob families, the Caprices and the Durantes. Charlie opts to finish the job his brother started and runs into some faces from the past along the way.
Kate has quickly becoming one of my favourite female characters to ever exist. She's just the right blend of elegant and spitfire. Anthony is amazing as well, romantic and bad-ass. Think Will Herondale, for you TID/Cassie Clare fans.
This second installment fixed the issue I had with the first, which was long info-dumps disguised as monologues. It was nice to see Kate and Anthony again and it didn't feel forced bringing them back.
A sequel to Speakeasy, I just loved this. I was one of those readers not ready to give up on some characters. And A.M. drops you back in time just right, letting us live in a bygone era!
