Mexico 1520: As the Aztec Empire burns to ash at Hernán Cortés's feet, in another part of the country a great treasure lies hidden in a sacred place watched over by its keepers. Throughout the land, a strange legend has long told of an ancient people dwelling deep within the jungle whose possessions include a precious set of stones with the potential to bring unlimited power to its owner. As well as wealth beyond their wildest dreams . . .
1904: In an old graveyard in a remote part of the Isles of Scilly, a distinguished academic makes a surprising discovery. The inscriptions on the gravestones are unlike any he has ever seen, at least in that part of the world. The clues point to an astounding possibility. A forgotten Spanish legend. And a four-hundred-year-old cover-up!
Present Day: History lecturer Dr Ben Maloney is sitting in his office when the phone rings. A call from his cousin is rarely anything out of the ordinary, but today what he has to say is anything but normal. Their great-great-grandfather's body has been discovered in a boat near a deserted island in the Isles of Scilly. With a bullet through his skull!
Dropping everything, the cousins' decision to visit the site of their ancestor's demise soon proves to be one that will change their lives forever. With nothing but a hundred-year-old diary and legends from the past to guide them, Ben soon realises their quest to solve the riddle of their ancestor's death will require them to take on an altogether greater mystery that will lead them not only halfway across the world delving deep into humanity's bloodiest past but potentially to their own deaths. An unimaginable treasure remains undiscovered - one with the ability to change the world for better or worse. And some will stop at nothing to find it . . .

Unbelievable! It was over 900pages long but don’t let scare you because it’s actually 3 books combined into 1 book. I love how the author combined the books first off. It wouldn’t have been such a thriller if he had. If you like historical fiction then this is your winter read. Gold, lost fortunes, treasure maps, world spies, Murder, betrayal and most of all when you have those elements working in one plot you get greed. Greed will make you do things your personality isn’t regularly- at lest I hope I am never out in that position. Cortes lost gold from the Incan empire and a treasure map as good today as it was in the 1500’s.
I began somewhat skeptical but wanted a more historical adventure read. The author was wise to offer the trilogy all in one long book. It read much better that way. Most of the characters developed well throughout the story line. I was sad Juliet's character did not seem consistent or seem to have any genuine interactions with Ben. Highly recommend & very much appreciate author's historical clarity at end of book. I will read more of this author! P.S grammar needs much better proofing
I could have sworn I had already left a review for this trilogy, obviously I was mistaken. I loved this from start to finish. This was the first I had read from this author and I was blown away, right up my street. The research that has gone into this is fantastic, the story is a page turned and the characters are great. Lots of twist and turns and kept you wanting more. If you love historical and present day entwined then you should read this.
Although very lengthy, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was very exciting and suspenseful. I look forward to reading other books by John Paul Davis.
I had a hard time getting through book one, but there was enough of a story line to get me to book two. But after being about 25% through it I'm done. The pace is so slow, bogged down in details of place and back story that add little to the story. It is repetitious, which may mean there was a serious lack of editing. Finally, the plot became just too implausible.
good book but author screws it up because chris and ben continually use words like ring instead of call, mobile instead of cell phone, and satnav instead of gps. BIG Mistakes crom an author who prides himself on doing his research........no self respecting american speaks that way...ben might as hes an academic from new england and probably a liberal..but chris is an ex seal......he would be tooosocizlized to say such crap.
Mr David always provides a masterfully told tale which mingled fiction with fact. You really want to believe that the story is true despite the history we have been taught.
Excellent character development leads the reader to favor selected characters. A hint of romance expands the plot and engages the reader. I found the ending unique almost expected.
Slow, predictable, and uninspiring. I love everything Mesoamerica and had high hopes but this was a letdown. The notes at the end were better than the book. Also it seems the author listed every use of any kind of new technology like it was as important as anything else in the book, but wrote like he'd never operated so much as a calculator. I was glad to be done with this.
Starts out good but somewhere along the line too many places and then the final one the big unanswered question how did the two sisters turn up when they were always two steps behind. Also I know this was fiction but somewhere there has to be a realistic premise.
I've read six more books since I read these. I'm not so keen on the character development, particularly women. The women in this are evil, demented, or marriage hungry. The plot is not so bad, looking for the treasure Cortes stole from Montezuma. The plot twists are somewhat contrived but still readable.
overall I liked it, but just didn't get into it liked I thought it was going to. Pacing was slower than I would have liked. I didn't care as much for some of the characters either. Ben was ok, but I enjoyed Colts more than I thought I would.
