In A Busy Writer’s Guide, you - find the answer to the age-old question of how much description is too much; - learn how to use point of view to keep description fresh; - recognize the red flags for boring description in fiction; - explore how to use all five senses to bring your descriptions to life for the reader; - discover the ways metaphors and similes can add power to your descriptive writing; - gain the tools needed to describe setting, characters, and action in engaging ways; - learn how descriptions can add conflict, enhance the theme, and amp up emotion; and - much more!
This book puts theory into plain language alongside examples so you can see how that theory looks in practice. In addition, you’ll receive tips and how-to exercises to help you apply what you learn to the pages of your own story. Most importantly, like every book in the Busy Writer’s Guide series, A Busy Writer’s Guide cuts the fluff so that you have more time to write and to live your life.
Marcy Kennedy is a science fiction and fantasy author who believes there's always hope. Sometimes you just have to dig a little harder to find it. In a world that can be dark and brutal and unfair, hope is one of our most powerful weapons.
She also writes award-winning mysteries under a pen name, but that's a secret. Shhhh...
Marcy lives in Ontario, Canada, with her former Marine husband, Boxer mix, eight cats (all rescues), and budgie. In her free time, she loves playing board games and going for bike rides.
I have always struggled with description in my writing. I tend to be a bit too minimalist. This book has really helped me see how I can use description to enhance my story. I feel like I understand it now, after just this one short book. Can’t wait to read more in this series.
Another wonderful writing book by Marcy Kennedy, my go to author when I need help with a particular area of my writing. Her explanations are so easy to understand and the use of examples spell it out for you so you know exactly what she means. Marcy’s writer’s guides are never dry or boring like others I’ve attempted to tackle. They are clear, concise, and super useful. I have recommended this series to so many new writers.
Descriptions have always been a weak point in my writing...this book provides lots of clear examples to help me internalize these guidelines. Thank you Marcy.☺️
5 stars! Marcy has created an incredible resource for any writer interested in learning to improve their skills in description or to just refresh some fundamental skills.
If you're a writer who has trouble with description in your books, then this book is a MUST HAVE. It covers everything from dialogue description to what to focus on externally. Every page was a revelation for me. It's now covered in highlighter and sticky notes. It will be one that I will re-read many, many times.
This is a good reference with a handy worksheet that you can use over and over until the items contained in it become habits. I know I'll be using it for some time until I get the 13 steeps down pat when editing.
