A measure of sugar, a splash of milk chocolate, and a dollop of new love are the ingredients for happiness for Emmalene Morton at the turn of the century. But the blend soon sours when a dash of gruesome murder and mystery are added to the mix.
The head of Research and Development of Morton’s Morsels Candy Company in Beanville Station, PA, Emmalene Morton delights in creating scrumptious confections for customers in the year 1900. Her father, Charles, recently discovered the secret to blending chocolate and milk for delicious Milk Chocolate, a secret recipe other companies are also racing to develop. Morton’s factory office is ransacked just as Charles comes down with a severe case of malaria, leaving him incoherent, the office a mess, and no clues.
Gathering up mashed jellies and mangled files, Emmalene and confections salesman Samuel Hillsen feel a warm attraction. The inklings of interest burst when a distinct distrust of the handsome man crept over Emmalene. But business and candy production must go on; scrumptious samples are required for the upcoming Philadelphia Candy Fair. Since Charles is ailing, expert candy maker Harry Whitell is tasked to quietly begin a batch of Milk Chocolate.
Checking on his progress, Emmalene sees Harry’s conche is stirring the chocolate, but the man is nowhere in sight. Searching for the candy maker, assistant Cassie Randall was inhaling the sweet aromas when she stopped with a gasp. Her screams echo throughout the factory. Harry lay crumpled on the floor, bludgeoned to death.
Although Beanville Station police investigate the crimes, immediate dangers threaten Emmalene, Charles, and others at Morton’s Morsels. Will their grand announcement at the Candy Fair be ruined? Was a desperate competitor after the recipe? Would someone kill for delicious milk chocolate?
Frightened and angered, Emmalene resolves to find the culprit before someone else is injured… or murdered.
