I wasn't impressed with this book at all. I was surprised though at how many good reviews it got from other people. I wouldn't compare this writer with Maeve Binchey or Rosamund Pilcher, yet others did.
I like The French Gardener much better. This book couldn't quite tell the story it was about. There was way too much sex that had absolutely nothing to do with the story (so why is this important for me to know?) The good part of the story started at the end and only covered a few chapters then it was all tied up very nicely and finished. Big let down.
I don't think I will be reading any of her other books.

Helaas was dit voor mij niet echt haar beste roman. Ik vond het nogal verwarrend.
Het verhaal speelde zich in 2 tijdslijnen af en ik vond vooral de tijdslijn van vlak na de oorlog het interessants. Hier kreeg je echt een duidelijk beeld van wie Mischa is en wat er allemaal is gebeurd. Ook de kleine inkijk naar het leven vlak na de oorlog maakte voor mij veel duidelijk.
Ik vond Mischa geen leuk personage. Als kind vond ik hem veel te wijs en volwassen overkomen..De volwassen Mischa is erg verbitterd, iets wat wel te verklaren was door zijn verleden en alles wat hij had meegemaakt. Het blijft een beetje in het midden. Coyote vind ik een hele integrerende man. Hij had vele geheimen maar was ook echt voor Mischa en zijn moeder.
Het grootste minpunt vond ik de verhaallijn over de Zigeunermadonna. Door het lezen van de samenvatting lijkt het alsof het boek hier grotendeels over gaat terwijl dit voor mij niet zo voelde.
De schrijfstijl van Santa Montefiore is wel weer prachtig. Op sommige momenten leek het net of ik echt op het kasteel aanwezig was. Ze schrijft namelijk heel beeldend. Dit maakte dat ik het boek wel met plezier heb gelezen.

Santa Montefiore heet eigenlijk Santa Palmer-Tomkinson. Ze is getrouwd met Simon Sebag Montefiore, die tevens ook auteur is.
De boeken van Montefiore kun je ergens wel indelen in het feelgood genre, maar meestal met een historische toets erin verwerkt. Deze keer las ik het boek De Zigeunermadonna.
Het verhaal
Mischa komt er na de dood van zijn moeder achter, dat ze een schilderij van de wereldberoemde schilder Titiaan heeft nagelaten aan het Metropolian Museum of Arts. Mischa gaat op onderzoek uit om na te gaan hoe het in zijn moeder haar bezit gekomen is.
Voor de tweede Wereldoorlog werkte ze in een Frans chateau waaruit ze moest vertrekken toen de oorlog losbarstte. Mischa vermoed dat daar de sleutel ligt tot het mysterie. Zijn zoektocht leidt hem naar het verleden maar brengt hem tevens ook een kans voor de toekomst.

Ik heb nu al een paar boeken gelezen van Montefiore en altijd weet ze me ergens te raken. Dit gebeurt meestal door haar zeer beeldende schrijfstijl. De manier waarop ze gebeurtenissen of gesprekken beschrijft is echt top.
De Titiaan is de spil in het verhaal alhoewel hij maar sporadisch eens vernoemt wordt. Dit schilderij zorgde ervoor dat het verhaal opgestart werd.
Als er een thema is dat er deze keer uitspringt, is het voor mij toch wel opgroeien. Opgroeien met een rugzak vol verleden en hoe je daarmee verder moet.
De personages zijn op papier gezet zodat je ze als lezer begrijpt. Het meeleven met de keuzes die ze moeten maken. In dit boek leef je echt mee met Mischa in zijn zoektocht naar de waarheid maar ook naar de zin van zijn leven.
Het duurde even voor ik volledig in het verhaal zat. Dat moet ik wel toegeven. Maar tegen dat we een paar hoofdstukken verder waren was ik mee en vanaf dan ging het zeer vlot om het boek uit te lezen. Dat is ook een pluspunt op de boeken van Montefiore. Het is ongedwongen lezen. Geen zware plots om uit elkaar te halen maar simpelweg één hoofdpersonage volgen die van heden naar verleden reist.

Veel grote verassingen waren er niet echt meer op het einde van het verhaal. Hier en daar nog een kleine ontknoping die wat resterende vragen kon oplossen die ik nog had. Maar niets meer die de lezer omver kon blazen.

Santa Montefiore to jedna z nielicznych autorek powieści obyczajowych, której twórczość chciałabym poznać w całości. Przed laty miałam przyjemność przeczytać jej książkę „Spotkamy się pod drzewem Ombu”, której fabuła na stałe zakorzeniła się w mojej pamięci. Choć od tamtego czasu minęło niemal 15 lat, wciąż pamiętam emocje, jakie ta historia we mnie wzbudziła. Ostatnio w moje ręce trafiło nowe wydanie powieści „Cygańska madonna”. Po przeczytaniu opisu z ogromną przyjemnością zagłębiłam się w lekturę, przekonana, że historia zawarta w tej książce mnie zachwyci.
Mischa to czterdziestoletni, nieszczęśliwy i samotny mężczyzna, który dopiero po śmierci matki, z którą był bardzo związany, uświadamia sobie swoje uczucia. Jego matka przez wiele lat prowadziła firmę zajmującą się skupowaniem antyków w Nowym Jorku. Niedługo po jej śmierci Mischa odkrywa, że była posiadaczką bezcennego obrazu Tycjana „Cygańska madonna”. Nie potrafi zrozumieć, dlaczego matka przez tyle lat skrywała tę tajemnicę. Aby odkryć prawdę o tym, jak stała się właścicielką obrazu, mężczyzna musi udać się do Bordeaux, wrócić do czasów dzieciństwa spędzonego w okupowanej Francji, odwiedzić znane mu miejsca i odkryć prawdę o sobie samym.
„Cygańska madonna” autorstwa Santy Montefiore to urzekająca, a zarazem bardzo intrygująca opowieść, na kartach której autorka zabiera nas do powojennej Francji. Poprowadzona w pierwszoosobowej narracji historia wciągnęła mnie od pierwszych stron i z zaciekawieniem śledziłam wydarzenia zarówno z czasów powojennych, jak i te rozgrywające się wiele lat później w Nowym Jorku. Autorka umiejętnie przeplata teraźniejszość z przeszłością, w sposób bardzo realistyczny oddaje wydarzenia z czasów II wojny światowej, jak i z okresu powojennego.
Santa Montefiore pisze lekko i przyjemnie, co sprawia, że przez całą powieść dosłownie się płynie. Piękne, wielobarwne opisy miejsc nie nużą, a wręcz przeciwnie – zachwycają czytelnika. Bohaterowie, zarówno pierwszo-, jak i drugoplanowi, są świetnie wykreowani, a każdy z nich odgrywa mniejszą lub większą rolę w życiu głównego bohatera. Autorka bardzo szczegółowo przedstawia nam relacje łączące Mischę z innymi postaciami, a także bardzo realistycznie oddaje ich emocje; czytając książkę, trudno nie poczuć tego, co w danym momencie przeżywają bohaterowie.
Podsumowując, „Cygańska madonna” autorstwa Santy Montefiore to piękna i poruszająca opowieść o niełatwych ludzkich losach, tajemnicach, miłości i przyjaźni. Mimo iż autorka w swojej powieści kilkukrotnie powtarzała niektóre zdarzenia, co dla niektórych może okazać się denerwujące, mnie w żadnym wypadku to nie przeszkadzało i całość uważam za dość dobrą lekturę, z którą przyjemnie spędziłam czas. Z pewnością w wolnej chwili sięgnę po inne tytuły tej autorki, ponieważ uważam, że Montefiore ma wspaniały kunszt pisarski, a jej historie na długo zapadają w pamięć. Polecam!

Comecei a leitura deste livro e fiquei pela página 100 durante bastante tempo. Resolvi depois dar-lhe outra chance e comecei a ficar presa à história, a leitura foi ganhando ritmo e revelou-se um livro interessante.
Quando a mãe morre, Misha, descobre entre os seus pertences, A Virgem Cigana, um célebre quadro de Ticiano, do qual desconhecia a existência.
Ao investigar a proveniência do quadro, Misha, vai também encontrar várias pistas sobre o seu próprio passado.
Comecei a leitura deste livro e fiquei pela página 100 durante bastante tempo. Resolvi depois dar-lhe outra chance e comecei a ficar presa à história, a leitura foi ganhando ritmo e revelou-se um livro interessante.

"Cuando encuentres un amor de verdad, no lo sueltes, porque es poco frecuente, un tesoro."
Me tuvo con la piel de gallina todo el tiempo. No es la historia de amor a la que ella nos tiene acostumbrada, aunque al principio lo creí. Es una novela diferente de Santa Montefiore (de lo que he leído de ella hasta ahora). Es la historia de Misha, un niño de 6 años que nos relata su vida ahora siendo un adulto con un poco más de cuarenta años; Pero por momentos alterna su relato con lo vivido en su niñez en los viñedos de Bordeaux.
En realidad en lo más hondo de su existencia sigue siendo ese niño herido que careció de amor: “A pesar de que tenía más de cuarenta años, todavía era aquel crío que se escondía detrás de una butaca.”
Más allá de estar narrado en primera persona por una voz masculina, en muchas cosas me identifiqué, sobre todo en la ausencia paterna. Está contextualizado en los tiempos en que el nazismo ocupó francia y la postguerra junto con el robo de obras de arte. Es la historia de una madre y su hijo marcados por lo vivido cuando los nazis entraron en Francia. Misha nos narra momentos hermosos de su infancia y otros agrios que vivió junto a su madre por el simple hecho de amar al enemigo. Y algo más: Misha ha quedado mudo, después de sufrir un hecho traumático.
Sigue siendo dulce la prosa de Santa que nos traslada a un castillo pero sufrí bastante; Insisto: Piel de gallina. Está perfectamente ambientada y es una novela llena de nostalgia con intriga y suspenso, sobre todo en referencia a Coyote de quién me quedé con ganas de saber más.
“A veces no basta con el amor. Una persona puede dar y dar, pero si no recibe nada a cambio, el amor se agota. Yo ya no tengo nada para darte, Mischa. Mi amor se ha agotado.”
El título es engañoso aunque sí el cuadro es punto clave para Misha quien se reconoce totalmente perdido siendo un adulto. "La virgen gitana", el cuadro pintado por Tiziano es el hilo conductor de un ovillo que llevará al lector al pasado para conocer, entender, descubrir y encauzar de una vez por toda la vida de Misha.
Me gustó muchísimo. Para los fans de Santa se la recomiendo, aparte de que se lee muy rápido. Y sí obvio tiene final feliz.

Refreshingly different. The Gypsy Madonna is not what you might expect from the title. Mischa is born of a French mother and German father. With his father dead, Mischa and his mother are left to face the condemnation of the people in the French village where they live. Shocked and stressed by an attack on them when he is three years old, Mischa loses his ability to speak. This is an enchanting story of his life - of sadness, magic and hope. Incredibly touching.

I really didn't connect with this story at all! I felt the plot promised so much but just didn't deliver. I didn't like Mischa as a character despite having sympathy with him. I ploughed through all of the quite repetitive chapters of his childhood experiences but then found there were large chunks of his life that were glossed over with only a few pages which made the book feel unbalanced. The final chapters felt rushed and tied everything up too conveniently. Disappointed!

Another layered novel. World War II, immigration, a boy coming of age and how he is affected by his "Gypsy Madonna" mother. Hard to describe succinctly, but the prose is poetic, the dialogue is fresh, there are strong emotional moments.

American art dealer Mischa discovers, just prior to his mother's death, that she is in posession of an unrecorded Titian. To discover it's provenance, he has to go back to the French village of his childhood, where he and his mother were barely tolerated because he is the son of a German officer, born during the occupation of WWII. He confronts his past and old ghosts, and finds out the truth about his family.
A large part of this book takes place in post-war France, and I enjoyed that aspect of the story. I did want to find out the story of Annouk and the painting, but in the end, when Mischa returned to France, there were just far too many coincidences for it to be credible. There was also far too much sex, as Mischa seemed to fall into bed with pretty much anything in a skirt he came across, and none exept one encounter had anything to do with the story.
It was ok, a quick and easy read, but could have been much better.

Initially the story was promising with a good subject matter and historical setting. The middle section of the book was ‘boggy’ and for the first time ever in my literary life l wanted to move to the end. Mentioned by other reviewers there was over much sex with non story related persons, it was surplus to the story. I resisted the temptation and determinedly progressed to the end of the book. It came together quite speedily and the loose ends were tied up with a full conclusion including the secret of the Gypsy Madonna. I could have left out an entire middle section of the novel and not have missed anything with any significance to the story. I might read another of Santa M’s books, possibly one of her more recent.

'The Gypsy Madonna' takes you on a roller coaster ride of extreme emotions, from abundant gratitude to pure empathy towards who suffered through the rampage of war crimes. This one story shows how religion can be twisted to inflict pain and how strangers can love you more than your blood relations. It was my first read by Santa Montefiore and it has me intrigued to read more by her. If you or anyone close to you has lived through a war and its aftermath, you can relate to this story on many levels. This book has very vividly shown what one incident can someone's psyche. Four stars
I haven't read this author for a while so when I saw this and the write up intrigued me I thought I'd give it a whirl. After a relatively slow beginning, it really picked up and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of twists and turns in the plot. There is a part where I was gutted and thought oh no but can't say anything else without spoiling it so you'll have to read it yourself 😊

This book was disappointing to me after reading some of Ms. Montefiore's other books. There were a lot of pages that were filled with insignificant details and actions. Things that just weren't important to the advancement of the plot. Then after wading through all this nonsense to find the resolution of the story, the plot is explained in just a few short pages and you are left feeling used or shorted in some way.

Another Dual Narrative, Which Is What Makes Me Love Santa Montefiore. Set Between France & America, Santa's Descriptions Show The Change From A Relaxed Way Of Living In France To The Hustle & Bustle Of The Big Cities. Lovable Characters And Even Though I Guessed The Twist, I Don't Think It Took Away From My Enjoyment Of The Story.

We volgen hoe de jonge Mischa uitgroeit tot de man wie hij is geworden. In het eerste deel volgen we hem wanneer hij nog maar 6 jaar is. Hierbij krijgen we een kijkje in zijn verleden en leren we hem en zijn naasten beter kennen. In het heden is Mischa in de 40 en is zijn moeder net overleden. Voor haaroverlijden heeft ze een waardevol schilderij gedoneerd aan een museum. Wanneer Mischa bezig is met de afhandeling hiervan wordt hij bezocht door een belangrijk persoon uit zijn verleden.
Helaas vond ik Mischa geen leuk personage. Als kind vond ik hem veel te wijs en volwassen overkomen. De volwassen Mischa is erg verbitterd, iets wat wel te verklaren was door zijn verleden en alles wat hij heeft meegemaakt. Coyote vind ik een hele integrerende man. Hij had vele geheimen maar was ook erg goed voor Mischa en zijn moeder.
Het verhaal speelde zich in 2 tijdslijnen af en ik vond vooral de tijdslijn van vlak na de oorlog het interessants. Hier kreeg je echt een duidelijk beeld van wie Mischa is en wat er allemaal is gebeurd. Ook de kleine inkijk naar het leven vlak na de oorlog vond ik interessant om te lezen.
Het grootste minpunt vond ik de verhaallijn over de Zigeunermadonna. Door het lezen van de samenvatting lijkt het alsof het boek hier grotendeels over gaat terwijl dit voor mij niet zo voelde. Voor mij was het belangrijkste de ontwikkeling die Mischa doormaakt en zijn verleden. De verhaallijn van de zigeunermadonna voelde meer als een connectie tussen de 2 verhaallijnen. Hierdoor was het dus ook niet het verhaal wat ik had verwacht.
De schrijfstijl van Santa Montefiore is wel weer prachtig. Op sommige momenten leek het net of ik echt op het kasteel aanwezig was. Dit maakte dat ik het boek wel met plezier heb gelezen.

De los libros que leí de la autora, este es probablemente el que menos me gustó, me resultó fácil de leer, me enganche desde el principio pero fui perdiendo el interés del inicio a medida que se desarrolla la historia para retomarlo en los últimos tres capítulos.
Creo que este desencanto se debe sobre todo a que los personaje no me generaron, en su mayoría, ningún tipo de interés o empatía, sobre todo Mischa, llegó un momento que me pareció insoportable.
En cuanto a la trama, si bien como dije, en el principio me resultó muy interesante, a medida que se va desarrollando la historia creo que va perdiendo fuerza y se hace repetitiva, demasiado perfecta o forzada en la resolución de algunas cosas, tal vez yo esperaba otro tipo de historia y por eso me paso esto, no se...
En conclusión, no es el libro que mas me gusto de la autora, rescato el relato en primera persona (aunque por momentos no lo podía relacionar con la voz de un niño de 6 años), esperaba otro tipo de historia, pero a pesar de esto es un libro que engancha y se lee fácil y rápido.
Serian en realidad 2 1/2 estrellas!!!

I am finally through this book. I don’t like to put a book down so I persevered. It was dull, too descriptive and very repetitive. The last 100 pages got me through but I was unimpressed to say the least. I usually enjoy this author but this book was a big disappointment!

Great story based on a famous painting. Author has the main character, Mischa, tell the reading about the past and present in such a way that is very interesting to the reader.

Este é o segundo romance da autora Santa Montefiore que leio, sendo que o primeiro foi A Árvore dos Segredos. As expectativas estavam elevadas, devido à estreia fabulosa que tive com ela e por isso estava bastante entusiasmada com este A Virgem Cigana. Este romance conta-nos a história de Mischa e da sua mãe, Anouk que vivem num chateaux em França, ostracizados pela população local, pois Mischa é filho de um alemão. Mischa e a mãe são tratados como traidores pelos habitantes da comunidade e têm uma existência muito complicada e bem exigente. Até que Coyote, um americano, chega à aldeia e muda a vida tanto de Mischa como de Anouk. A música e o amor entra nos seus corações e Coyote é o motor de mudança toda, apesar de todo o mistério e desconfiança que o segue como uma sombra. Há algo de Coyote que ninguém consegue alcançar, nem aqueles que ele diz amar. E essa sombra torna-se notória quando este deixa Mischa e Anouk sem qualquer espécie de aviso.
Mischa, que idolatrava Coyote, acaba por crescer com a ideia que foi abandonado sem razão aparente e a raiva entra no seu espírito para dominar toda a sua vida. Quando a mãe morre, deixa para trás uma série de perguntas às quais Mischa vai tentar responder com uma visita emotiva aos fantasmas do passado.
A escrita de Santa Montefiore foi algo que me agradou muito no livro anterior e este A Virgem Cigana não foi nenhuma excepção. A forma como ela descreve os cenários é muito apelativa e é impossível não nos deixarmos encantar pelas imagens que ela traz à nossa imaginação. As suas histórias puxam sempre um pouco pelo lado mais emotivo do leitor e isso também ajuda a criar uma ligação especial às jornadas destes personagens fictícios. Este livro passa por vários países - França, Estados Unidos da América e Chile. Para mim, que gosto de ler sobre sítios onde nunca estive, foi um achado. Adorei tentar colocar-me no lugar dos personagens e tentar imaginar as paisagens que a autora pintou para mim.
A infância de Mischa foi a parte do livro que mais me emocionou, por razões óbvias. A crueldade está bem presente e é algo muito forte ver como é que os outros habitantes tratam esta criança inocente. Por isso mesmo, senti um orgulho imenso quando Mischa conseguiu ultrapassar os seus traumas.
A parte contemporânea, apesar de me ter cativado por causa do mistério que envolveu a vida de Coyote, não teve o mesmo impacto em mim. Tenho que confessar, contudo, que existiram certos pormenores mais para o final desta leitura que me surpreenderam e que foram os responsáveis por manter o meu interesse até ao final. Fiquei apenas um pouco desiludida com a parte romântica. Se não fosse isso, esta leitura tinha-se revelado ser uma bastante interessante em vários aspectos. No entanto, esta escolha da autora em termos românticos foi uma que não me convenceu na totalidade e soube-me a pouco, tendo em conta o resto do livro.
Concluindo, foi uma leitura que teve óptimos momentos e outros que ficaram aquém das expectativas. Gostava de ter visto mais desenvolvimento no romance propriamente dito e creio que isso não permitiu no final recordar-me deste livro de uma forma mais intensa ou mais querida. Quero, apesar isso, ler mais livros da autora. aqui

I liked the concept of the book, the main character in the book, Mishca is born to a French mother and a German soldier during the war. Raised in a small French village they are outcasts given his heritage. While the concept was good, I cannot say much else for the book. I found that some of the dialogue was forced and not sure why the sex scenes were included in the book.

This book started out so promising but halfway through became full of cliché and so unbelievable.
