The Moab LaSal Loop Road is 61 miles of mountainous and riverside wonders. Along this road, you drive through the LaSal Mountain Range east of Moab. The mountain road is usually snow free from June through October, though portions of it can be closed through July. After crossing the plateau along the mountains’ west side, you descend into beautiful Castle Valley where you see Castle Rock, a famous landmark. The road continues through the valley to Highway 128, locally called the River Road, because it follows the Colorado River. The scenery changes to desert vistas and red cliffs as you pass several campgrounds and river running areas. Elite accommodations are located at ranches. There is a trail used by bicyclists, runners and walkers along a portion of the river, and it can be accessed at several points, including the newly rebuilt Lion’s Park at the end of the route. The trail leads to other popular biking routes including the Porcupine Trail. The road in the mountains is a good trip to take in the summer when the desert is hot. In the winter, cross country skiing and snowmobiling is popular. Side trips include the famous Fishers Towers. The main loop portion of this book presents features that can be seen from the road in order as you travel the loop road. Each listing includes a mileage and a GPS location. Side roads are listed, but you will find more information by following a link to a detailed section. After you follow a link use the BACK button on your Kindle to return to the place you left the main loop. Because this is a Road Guide, emphasis is given to features the can be seen from roadside turnouts or short hikes. If you are interested in longer or backcountry hikes, obtain maps and directions from the Moab Information Center.
