Veronica Roth is the New York Times best-selling author of When Among Crows, Arch-Conspirator, Poster Girl, Chosen Ones, the Carve the Mark series, and the Divergent series. She lives in Chicago, Illinois with her husband and dog.
This is only a one chapter sampler of Veronica Roth's new book Carve The Mark and it isn't the first chapter. The sampler contains just Chapter 7 but just from exploring the new futuristic world, I'm very intrigued to read the new book once it is released in January 2017. It's very tricky to review a one chapter sampler but I wish the sampler contained more chapters. The cover design is gorgeous, I need to read the Divergent trilogy this summer!
2.5 stars Look. To start off, I will say this. It was not bad and I am not trying to hate on this book. Maybe it was just not my type of book because I just didn't really feel anything. I just didn't get that WOW! factor that everybody else seems to be getting. I loved Divergent, and I really like Veronica Roth's writing style. Maybe I will love the book when I read the whole thing, but this chapter just didn't have me pulled in. It was okay.
It certainly has a lot going on that could make this either a OMG! I LOVE THIS BOOK! or a Meh. That was kind of underwhelming type of book. Oracles, kingdoms, the fight for power, prophecies, and a variety of cultures and languages. The execution here is crucial. I can't count all of the times that I loved the summary for the plot and then just felt like this because something wasn't plausible or something was really unrealistic etcetera. Everybody knows what I'm talking about, you know when you are just left in silence staring at the book with this expression, sighing, thinking about what could have been like this :
If she can pull this off, then Veronica will have me like this :
But for now, I'll just have to wait and see. I'll have trouble with the waiting part, 2017 is too far way.
I'm serious, nothing special at all. I didn't understand the story and about her brother. There was no enemies to lovers, no tention conversations, no angry confessions, nothing! It was more like, "I thought you hate me because I'm a monster", "oh no, I like you, you're amazing".
Please, this is not enemies to lovers! 2 stars only for duoal pow and my love for Cisi, the MCS were bad, sorry
I need this book now! So good. The races, the world, the powers, the main character. I was wary I wouldn't like it just from reading one chapter but damn, it was good. Makes me miss divergent and reminds me how good a YA author v Roth is.
Umm. More confused than excited, I think, so far, maybe because I can't get a grasp on anything happening based on this chapter. Will still read the book, obviously, because I think Roth is an excellent writer, I just not floored like I expected to be.
I recommend this to new and old scifi fantasy readers alike. Don't be fooled into thinking this is anything like the Divergent series.
This was so easy to read as the characters were so realistic and credibly written. You don't always see the realistic quirks that stop this from being predictable and similar to other epic sagas. We are never left sure who is a villain and who is a hero. Cyra is a cruel girl who is official torturer for her brother, Ryzek the leader of a nomadic and warlike race, the Shotet. They are not recognised by the United planet's and he is going to conquer them to get status for his people. To do this he needs an oracle to guide him, he has the Kereseth brothers kidnapped and their father murdered as the fate of the older brother is to be his oracle. We follow the babarism of the treatment given to both brothers as Ryzek tries to realise his dreams.
Spoiler Alert but significant people are often told their unltimate demise when they are young. Most of them are still alive at the end of the novel despite the feel that the novel should be finished! Ryzek makes revelations which no one knows about almost at the end of novel. A very clever device to make the reader want to carry on reading the series to see how the foreshadowing comes to pass.
I really enjoyed the audiobook version with actors who really made the narrative live. I hope they are the same for the next novel too.
A well-crafted new fantasy series by a proven sci-fi talent.
I was given a free copy of the novel for my fair and honest opinion through Instafreebie.
I really liked this book because I got introduced to science fiction and action and loved it since I have read Veronica Roth's other book series Divergent. I love how this book mixes space, love and action in which I love all three. I also like how you really get to know the characters and feel emotions along with them.
Toto je teda brutálne zaujímavé. Síce som nerozumel polovici, lebo nepoznám tie mená, a strácam sa vo všetkom, ale strašný masaker!!! Máte sa na čo tešiť. A btw. toto budeme rozdávať na Bibliotéke ;)
So I was thrown into the seventh chapter or something, but it wasn't hard to get into the story. The main characters have so far been unremarkable, but Ryzek is interesting. I think I'm adding this to my TBR.
Un'anteprima accattivante anche se si capiscono pochi aspetti della trama generale. Sicuramente mi ha fatto venire voglia di leggere il libro Carve the Mark
I remember reading the description of this book, and it said, "fans of Star Wars..." The world building for this book is done beautifully, but the book lacked character, and there never seemed to be any push to resolve anything. I might have enjoyed this book if anything happened of significance -- at least before the end of the story. Maybe this should have been one book instead of two. Again, the world is descriptive and thick with promise. I just do not feel the need to ever revisit it.

Can I start by saying LOOK HOW GORGEOUS THIS COVER IS. Okay, so Carve the Mark is the newest duology from Veronica Roth, otherwise known as author of the Divergent Trilogy. I was lucky enough to receive a first look (Chapter 7) of Carve the Mark! So far, it is 100% different from Divergent. This takes place in a very futuristic setting, setting the genre as teen fantasy. I'm not a huge fantasy fan, but I can see so much potential.
What you need to know: Carve the Mark is told from a female point of view. Veronica has created new languages for the different cultures. The characters have something called "currentgifts." The oracle can see visions for the future, but the newest oracle supposedly cannot see these visions. Ryzek, the POV's brother, wants to lead the Assembly.
Personally, I cannot wait to see what Veronica Roth has in store for us. January 17, 2017 carvethemarkbooks.com
First of all, I can't believe this is actually considered a book since it's a sampler... Second, I literally only read this to add a book to my reading challenge. Also I have no idea how to rate this since it was only 12 pages?!?!? Okay so I got this sampler when I was at BookCon so I figured I might as well read it. It was super confusing because it was taken from chapter 7 so I had no idea who anyone was or anything about the world. Also the names were super hard to pronounce. Nevertheless, I'm still really excited to read this!! The end of the sampler was definitely interesting and grabbed my attention...
This chapter definitely got my attention. I love the fantasy world this story takes place in and all the new things we'll get to explore in this story. The main character so far is vague, you get to know something about her brother and the way she sees him and knows him. This chapter doesn't give a lot about her character or what's so special about her, but I'm excited to find out soon. I can't wait for this book to come out on January 17, 2017.
This was a first look at Veronica Roth's book which will be released next January. I am a huge fan of the Divergent trilogy and when I saw that this was available for download I had to have it. Although there was only one chapter to read,I can tell that this is going to be an interesting and exciting book to read.
Seems interesting. I was hoping that the expert was a couple of chapters, didn't realize that it was only an extract of one. However, I am really looking forward to this book. Veronica Roth is an excellent author and I really don't think she'll screw this up, despite the constant hate I see online.
January 17th is a long wait, but I think that it'll be worth it. :)
I was excited to begin the read of another VR book. I was so disappointed. It was impossible to follow the thought behind each sentence. Too many commas made the end of most sentences seem an after thought. Even short sentences ended with a comma then a word. I was lost!
This is a great teaser chapter. I'm guessing it introduces 4 of the main characters and is a glimpse into their personalities, their conflicts and the world that Roth has created for some new books. I'm excited. Can't wait for 2017.
Oh my fireballs- this first look is so so so so amazing! The chapter choice- which to show first- was a very interesing one, one that can tell you who they are and what they do at first glance. Spectacular- can't wait to read the whole book!
