A princess on-the-run finds sanctuary where she least expects it…
After nearly dying in an assassination attempt, Princess Alessandra of Glorvaird escapes to a place no one would ever think to look for her: small town Oklahoma and a ranch staffed by a herd of wooly, uncouth cowboys. One cowboy in particular gets under her skin, until she sees his softer side. She knows this interlude can’t last forever, but that doesn’t stop her from wishing it might…
Former Navy SEAL Gideon Hale might’ve rescued the princess from freezing to death, but the soldier doesn’t trust easily — or at all — especially when his gut tells him Alessandra is keeping secrets. But as Alessandra begins to fit into his life, he discovers another side to the princess — one that he can’t help but like.
When Alessandra’s enemies close in, Gideon must fight to save the woman who has become so much more than a princess…
Once Upon a Cowboy is a contemporary western retelling of the Snow White fairytale and Book 1 in the Cowboy Fairytales series.
Lacy Williams wishes her writing career was more like what you see on Hallmark movies: dreamy brainstorming from a French chateau or a few minutes at the computer in a million-dollar New York City penthouse. In reality, she’s up before the sun, putting words on the page before her kids wake up for the day. Those early-morning and late-night writing sessions add up, and Lacy has published fifty books in almost a decade, first with a big five publisher and then as an indie author. When she needs to refill the well, you can find Lacy birdwatching, gardening, biking with the kiddos, or walking the dog. I enjoyed this novella about a modern day princess. The author did a great job portraying her desperation to escape, her fear of danger, and trauma from the recent violence. Gideon is a pretty tough nut to crack, but when he falls, he falls hard. Allie's pleasure in cooking for the cowboys and working in the kitchen endears her to all the men working on the ranch, and soon they can't imagine life without her. The fact that her stay is just temporary creates a strong tension, while the suspense from the danger she's in keeps the story quickly moving forward. Looking forward to reading more in the series!
(Thank you to the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review)
This was all kinds of fun! A Snow White retelling with cowboys instead of dwarfs?! Yes please! What a clever idea!!! And I loved spotting all the subtle nods to the original fairy tale. Plus, not everything is wrapped up (though the romance is a done deal) but the suspense-y thread looks like it will continue on through the rest of the series. Gideon is the perfect gruff, show-no-emotion, alpha hero and Alessandra is so much more than a pampered princess. Hello clashing of wills and toe-curling kisses. :-) Excited to see what other tales are featured in this unique cowboy series.
I enjoyed listening to the audible edition narrated by Lara Asmundson and will continue the rest of the series on audible.
A sweet romance about a princess and an ex-navy-seal turned cowboy. I didn't understand why the author considered it a fairy tale. The story is a relatively simple romance but the emotions are well-written and the characters very likable.
I'm a sucker for princess romances. I don't know why that is. Take a princess in hiding and throw her in with a rough and tough cowboy (ex navy seal to boot) and man- it's swoon worthy. :) There is a bit of suspense in this one and it was just fun! I read through it quickly and was sad to get to the end. There are more books in this series and I'm hoping to read them. Soon-ish. :) Rough and tough cowboy has a brooding brother. . .
Lately I have begun listening to the Cowboy Fairytales series by Lacy Williams. I have listened to the first two books in the series so far, and I highly recommend them! The narration is very good. I enjoy the narrator’s voice and find that she truly pulls me into the story.
And the story…well these books are combining a couple of my favorite things to read about..fairytale princesses and cowboys. It seems like a funny mix, but the author does a great job of creating seemingly realistic scenarios and characters, which make the events that occur in the books totally believable to me. It has just been such a joy to listen to these stories.
Once Upon a Cowboy is the first book of the series and the two main characters, Alessandra and Gideon, were so easy to connect with. Their backstories were interesting and the attraction that began to bloom between them was perfect. I love fairytale princess novels for the happy feelings they leave me with and Once Upon a Cowboy did just that.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was pretty well developed considering its length. It was clean, sweet, and safe. I couldn't ask for a nicer way to spend the time between full length reads.
Reader thoughts: Just what I needed, and it was a good price. The romance was clean and sweet, but they seemed attracted to each other too fast. I liked the little hints of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs retelling.
I originally thought Allie was a Princess from another world who finds herself in Texas (like a midwest version of Enchanted). The first page intrigued me because it mentioned "Princess" and "New York" with "Paparazzi." I soon learned this is closer to a Princess Diaries tale, a princess from an unknown European nation (Glovaird).
The writing and dialogue felt natural. There were just the right number of characters. I'm interested to see what happens with Princess Mia.
Writer thoughts: This is more on the Marketer side of writing, but I picked this book up for free. I don't know if it's permanently that way or if it is on sale. I wanted a sample of the book, but apparently Amazon doesn't do free samples when the book is free (go figure). I saw this because I was checking out some of Jenni James's books.
I don't normally go for romances. I rarely read free books the same day I buy them. In fact, I accidentally clicked on this one when I was trying to get to another book. Oops. Was I hooked in the first few lines? Sort of. Then I realized it had only been a few minutes, and I was already 26% into the book. It was barely after 9pm. So, I finished it.
So, what worked? A low price PLUS a short book to start a series might be a good idea (I really ought to follow my own advice, ha). I'm not enough of a romance fan to pick up any of the rest of the books, but other readers probably will.
I really enjoyed this contemporary western take on Snow White. I love retellings, and this one was done very well! All the classic elements were there, including some fun small details. I fell in love with the characters immediately, and the romance was definitely swoon worthy. I loved the way it wrapped up. The rest of the story wasn't completely wrapped up, though. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
I could not really see the fairytale aspect to be honest, I had not guessed it was Snow White. But that does not matter. It was a contemporary romance after all.
This was a short audibook, and I did enjoy that. When it comes to audio short is good, and since it takes me ages to listen to it, it never feels too rushed. Even if they fell in love really fast, but since it took me 3 weeks then they fell in love pretty slow ;)
It's the story about a princess who is on the run after someone tried to kill her. Alessandra was pretty adaptable. She was sweet, she baked, I could not find any faults with her.
She ends up on Gideon's farm, and hey he is a really good guy too. He wants to protect her. They are just good people the both of them. And there is no real drama between them either. They fall in love and they will live happily ever after.
Though there is drama, the whole who is trying to kill her, and her family. And that is not resolved since there are more books out.
3.5🌟 Audiobook: A sweet romance with a touch of danger thrown in, this book launches the Cowboy Fairytales novella series. This is a fun contemporary take on the Snow White fairytale with an evil aunt in the place of the evil stepmother. The narrator does a good job although her male voices are unconvincing.
Robin’s Ratings 5🌟 = Out of this world. Amazing. Unforgettable. A personal favorite. 4🌟 = Excellent read. Couldn’t put it down. Will recommend to others. 3🌟 = Liked it. Glad I read it. Engaging/entertaining/interesting. 2🌟 = The book was okay, but I’ve enjoyed other books so much more. 1🌟 = For whatever reason, I didn’t like it and can’t recommend it.
Lacy Williams begins a series of Fairytale westerns. I found this a unique twist on them. Princess Alessandra from Glorvaird is visiting New York City when an attempt is made on her life in which her bodyguard is shot and killed. Bystander, Gideon Hale comes to her rescue; and when he determines this isn't the first attempt on her life, he decides the best thing to do is take her home to his cattle ranch in north Texas. Will Gideon be able to keep her safe along with trying to hide his feelings?
This was a thoroughly enjoyable book with a wonderful twist. I look forward to reading the other books in this series.

I enjoyed this clean, contemporary western story that has a fairy tale feel to it. Take a former Navy Seal, Gideon, who after an injury had to give up his military career and move back to Texas to run the family ranch. While going to the airport to pick up his brother Matt who is home on leave, he noticed a banging in the back of the truck. What a shock to find a freezing woman in an evening gown stowed away. Princess Alessandra of Glorvaird is on the run and in hiding after an assassination attempt on her life in New York that killed her bodyguard. Gideon is on full alert to try and keep her safe until her security team says it is ok to come home.
The plot has two people, from two different lifestyles thrown together in a life and death situation. Gideon’s military training keeps him on full alert to keep her safe and on her way back home. Allie, as they are calling her is anything but a spoiled Princess. She cooks and cleans in his home and never makes demands. But how can two people, two different countries, two different lifestyles, and agendas make a relationship work? When there is love involved, you are more willing to find the path and make it work. This is a sweet, clean story with charming characters, entertaining dialog and an HEA ending. I look forward to reading more in this series. Disclosure: I was provided with an e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.
Once Upon a Cowboy by Lacy Williams, 4.5 Stars!!! Two great novellas in one sweet deal! I really enjoyed Once Upon a Cowboy, William's modern day twist to the Snow White story. The characters were well written, the story had a nice pace and it was a fun read! If you like sweet romances, fairytale retelling and just an overall good, quick read you should give this one a shot! I am really looking forward to the rest of this series!
*** This is currently running as a two for one deal at only $0.99! You Don't Have to Be a Star / Once Upon a Cowboy (2-in-1): inspirational romance
Great story. I loved it. There were a few cliches and plot holes. And I wished there was more progression of the love story!! :) But the writing is great and it's a sweet love story.
Once Upon a Cowboy is the first contemporary book I have read by Lacy Williams. I found the book delightful. It was a fresh take on an old fairy tale. No, I’m not going to tell you which one. You’ll figure it out. I immediately bought the next book in the series and it’s sitting smack on top of my TBR.
Princess Alessandra is doing her royal duty in NYC, when an assassin takes a shot at her. Her bodyguard dies saving her. Terrified, she goes on the run. She stops running when she hides in the bed of a pickup truck in airport parking. Allie (Alessandra) is compassionate, strong and resourceful, but also unsure of being worthy of love.
I found the owner of the pickup truck, Gideon, really annoying to begin with. He’s all cranky and mad because he can’t be a SEAL anymore. So bossy and mistrusting. It’s obvious he loves the ranch and his family. Showing it is another thing entirely. But gradually he begins to see his behavior is causing friction with the hands and hurting Allie. He becomes much more relatable.
Allie makes a profound difference in the lives of everyone on the ranch. The ranch hands begin to start being spiffier and Gabe’s sister and niece adore her. Gabe tries really hard not to adore her also. But, hey, it’s a fairy tale, it has to have an HEA. So, even though we know the story continues, Ms. Williams totally ties this fairy tale up with a bow.
The blurb for this story sounded good but when it included an ex-SEAL turned cowboy with a princess on the run, I just had to read it.
This story starts off exciting right away with an assassination attempt on Princess Alessandra. When she goes on the run, ending up hiding in the back of Gideon's truck in Texas and he finds her, he wants to know what she's doing there. Lucky for her Gideon doesn't recognize her but his marine brother who is with him does.
It's hard to think of this as a fairy tale type story because of the dangerous situations Alessandra gets in. She couldn't have picked a better truck to hide in, though. With Gideon's SEAL training, he's the perfect man to keep her safe. Gideon is a bit rough around the edges but a very good man. Alessandra is a surprise. She has always lived in a palace with every minute planned for her. So sometimes she's at a loss for what to say or do. But she digs in at the ranch, making herself useful in the kitchen. Her hard work and caring personality make her well liked by the ranch hands. Before long, Gideon and Alessandra have fallen for each other.
Even though this story ends nicely, there are lots of unanswered questions leaving openings for more books in this series that I can't wait to read.
OKAY.... this wasn't what I thought it was going to be and figured it would be a predictable cowboy meets a princess and both of them fall in love. Although that was part of it of course, but there was actually more to it and I absolutely loved it! Especially how Gideon and Alessandra had judged each other a little too quickly in the beginning, but when Alessandra began to wash dishes to mainly keep her busy at first, the next morning she made the Ranch hands breakfast and even ended up cleaning the kitchen and other dishes. In time Gideon and Alessandra open up to each other and it goes from there.
I seriously loved the short progression of these two and also Alessandra realizing she had found her place in life and a lifestyle she had come to enjoy on the Ranch and brought life back to it and Gideon's family home. The ending was satisfying and now I'm actually excited to get to book 2 and the rest of Alessandra's sister's stories. I DID try picking up the third one thinking it was going to be a standalone kind of story, but after a few pages in and having references to the first two books after reading the synopsis for both, I decided to take off "currently reading" for the third book and start with book 1 and now I'm excited for book two and then finally getting to book 3.
Alessandra is a Princess visiting NYC when her bodyguard dies protecting her. On the run after the assassination attempt, she finds herself in the bed of a pickup truck in the Dallas airport. Gideon is at the airport to pick up his brother, Matt, who is on military leave. When they discover someone has stowed away in their truck, they really don't know what to think.
If you enjoy fairytale retellings, this is a pretty good book. However, I do have some problems with it. First of all, the blurb says that Alessandra winds up in Oklahoma, not Texas. How do you make such a mistake on a blurb? I was dissatisfied with the ending in a lot of ways. I imagine that the story continues in further books, but I felt like I was left hanging in the ending. Way too many things that were brought up throughout the book were never answered.
The narrator did a pretty good job, but as with a lot of female narrators, the men's voices just didn't work for me. If you are looking for a sweet, clean romance, this is enjoyable enough. I was given a copy of this audiobook by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.
I enjoyed this book very much. I think this Author is a very good storyteller. I thought the book was very well written. I thought that the characters were very well developed. I liked the characters very much in this book. They were Princess Alessandra of Glorvaird and Navy Seal Gideon Hale. Some the other characters were the siblings of Navy Seal Gideon Hale. Princess Alessandra barely escapes an assassination attempt. As she flees she ends up in the back of a pickup owned by Gideon Hale. Gideon takes her to his ranch to keep her safe. The book did have a conclusion in that Alessandra and Gideon get together. However there is a bit of a cliff hanger and that is why I only gave 4 stars. It seems that there is more of the story that needs telling to end it well; but one must get the next book in the series to get those details. Questions left in one's mind at the end of the book is, "Did they get married?" Did they find out who was behind the assassination attempt? And, if they did find out who was behind the attempt, what they do to stop it from happening the future?
I like that there is no profanity or sexually explicit dialogue.
This story is about a Princess running for her life after a near assassination and trying to fit in on a Montana ranch. Princess Alessandra hides in the back of a truck running from an attacker, alone and afraid somehow luck was on her side once again when the owner is a Navy SEAL. Gideon didn't just pick up his little brother at the airport but also a stowaway, he is reluctant, suspicious and weary of the woman frozen in his truck bed but agreed to help. This story is sweet, full of cute moments, danger, suspense and growth. Our moody SEAL is in over his head when he finds out the truth about Allie, with a working ranch to run, a family to take care of now he must also navigate through his feelings while keeping a princess safe. Both Gideon and Alessandria come from completely different worlds, with danger lurking, duty and family responsibilities working against them do they even have a chance. This story is about having to choose duty over desire and realizing how to make both of them work. I can't wait to read the others in this series. This story does have parts that are unanswered and hopefully will be with the other books in the series. It's a cute story.
