Forced to grow up way too fast, the idea of happily ever after really is just a fairy tale to Caleb.
When a job goes wrong and his client ends up dead, Caleb Slate gets a reality check. Now with a threat looming over him and his future clients, he decides to leave the family security business.
Starting over as CEO of Slate Property Development should be hassle free, right? Buy a property, fix it up, sell it—no one gets hurt or killed. It should be that easy. Until his recent purchase houses over a hundred tenants who are reluctant to leave their homes.
Sarah-Jayne Tanner is a single mom to five year old twins Maddison and Mitchell, living in a rundown and decrepit apartment in Fort Lincoln, D.C.
Just when things start going smoothly, the building's landlord dies and the new landlord wants all the residents out and to knock the building down, but SJ won't go down without a fight.
After a heated argument Caleb agrees to SJ’s challenge. If he wins the residents leave. If he loses, they stay. One week, stripped of his luxuries and plunged into a world of poverty, will he make the week or does he even care now SJ and the children have won his heart?
When his past comes back to exact revenge, Caleb will do anything it takes to save the only woman he's ever loved.
I’m twenty-eight, a wife, a mother to three children and the author of the Daylight Series. Currently my writing career consists of five books, the Daylight trilogy, Hell Hath no Fury and Silver Bells, Curses and Spells. All of them are published and can be found on most eBook platforms. I've also contributed a couple of short stories to charity anthology Shivers and Lace. When I was younger, I never dreamed of being an author—I think I wanted to be a pop star or actress these were pretty farfetched dreams, so I settled for being an accountant or marine biologist. My grades at school were abysmal and not worthy of a mention, I also never went on to higher education. I have absolutely no qualifications in creative writing or any similar subjects, but I have a very overactive imagination and I’m an avid reader of all genres of fiction.
I was drawn into the book from the very beginning. The characters are well developed as we go along in the book. We see how they grow and are able to find strength to get through the most difficult times. And that their friends and family are very supportive and help in any way they can.
Both Caleb and SJ had to grow up at a young age and take care of those younger than them. Caleb and his brothers had many struggles early on in their lives but they were able to come together stronger and grow their businesses. Caleb changes careers because one of his clients was kidnapped and killed while he was protecting her.
SJ struggles working two jobs to try to keep food on the table and a roof over her head and that of the 5 year old twins. The apartment building she lives in is to be demolished and she doesn't know what she will do.
Caleb is the new landlord of the building and takes a liking to SJ and the twins. As he gets to know her, he sees her daily struggles and wants to help her to find a better way of living. However, they don't know how both of their pasts will come back to wreck havoc for them.
I recommend you read this emotional journey. I like that SJ is a strong relatable character. She doesn't let up and she puts up a good fight. Find out what happens with SJ and Caleb after their pasts wreck havoc and where do they come out in the end. It is a must read!
I loved this story! It drew me in from the very beginning and kept my attention throughout. It has it all, a fantastic original story line, with twists and turns you don’t see coming; love, sex, drama and reality. The characters in the story are great; I loved most, and hated some. I really liked both SJ and Caleb; they were very real and honest people who you could relate to. I loved SJ for her fight and determination. Despite only being 21 she is mature beyond her years because of the really tough life she has lead; and still leads. Caleb is rich, sexy, of course, and very determined too. However, he is really nice and totally bowled over from his first meeting with SJ. She is not so convinced though, she just sees him as a spoiled rich guy, who doesn’t care at all about the real people he is steam-rollering over. She intends to change his perspective on life! As I said there are twists throughout the book, nothing is quite what it seems; there is some really gritty realism in the story, that certainly makes you think. There are some tough topics dealt with and not shied away from. It is a captivating read. This is my first read of a K.M. Thompson story and I was very impressed. I do hope there will be more of Caleb and SJ’s story in the future, because I do want to know their future and what happens to the characters as their lives move forward. I highly recommend this book.
I fell in love with this story and the characters. This book will give you not only love and sex but also an original story line that you dont feel like you have read a million times, a few twists and turns that you dont see coming and shock the crap out of you. The shocking truths that you find out at almost the end of this book have me wanting so much more from the Slate brothers.
After working in the family security business and a job going wrong Caleb takes a step down and starts over as CEO to Slate Properties. He buys properties, fixes them up and sells them no one gets hurt or ends up dead. Well all of that is true until his most recent purchase gives him over 100 tenants who do not want to leave along with Sarah-Jayne.
SJ is a single mom of twins living in this run down property that Caleb is now landlord to. The new landlord wants them out and SJ is determined to make him see her ways and keep the building standing.
But what happens when sparks fly between SJ and Caleb. Will they be able to keep their relationship professional.. What happens when the past comes back to seek revenge can Caleb protect SJ the woman who stole his heart the day she walked into his office or will the past pull him down leaving her broken.
Amazing 5 STAR read that has me wanting and waiting to see if the brothers get their stories as well.
Caleb is a billionaire and yes he does correct people who say millionaire, he is sweet and thoughtful but he is also tortured by a security job gone south. When SJ steps into his office something pings in his chest. His heart, the heart he didn't know is alive and kicking. He is almost as shocked about it as he is about the lady who is causing his heart to flutter like a 16 year old. There is a lot of deception and twisted plots, pain and torture, love and loss, intrigue and betrayal, all in a well written story and an introduction to the Slate siblings and step siblings. We find out they have a lot of stuff and skills they bring to the table. We even get to be apart of Caleb's eye opening experience which exposes him to a different direction in his own life and awareness.
As much as is going on in this story this author does a great job answering all of the questions and bringing it all together in a nice tidy ending. While this book is an emotional read it hits you a little differently than the others. There are characters you dream of a painful death there are others that you can't help but cheer on. The supporting brothers are wonderful in their own unique ways and we get to know some of their stories. All in all a great read and I can't wait for more from this author I discovered this year and I am so glad I did.
So I received an ARC to give a fair and honest review. Caleb is an awesome read. You will be hooked right away. I was not able to put it down. Caleb isn't your typical rich guy he has a past. Sarah has a twist you won't see coming. Sarah shows Caleb a whole new world and he shows her one too. They are so good for one another. This book is full of suspense and has some laughter as well. I loved how the characters are written you will fall in love with them all. It's got some hot love scenes that you won't want to miss. If you haven't read the Daylight series which was also written by same Author you need read them all. Was so glad to catch up on characters from Day light in this book as well. Caleb and Sarah's story has you on the edge of your seat so make sure you have time to read it you won't want to put the book down. I'm so glad I found this author KM and you will too. I can't wait for the next book in series and hope to continue to still hear about the characters we have fallen in love with already. You won't be disappointed you picked this book and I hope you love it as much as I did.
Caleb works security with his brothers; after a tragic accident, he leaves the business. Caleb goes into the real estate business. He buys a run down apartment building slated to be torn down. An intricate, action-packed, story within a story, within, well you get it! Romance, crime bosses, life struggles and mystery brilliantly written! Believable characters and dialog. Page turning standalone! Book free for honest review.
Caleb was astounding. He stole my heart immediately. He was funny, heartwarming and a little scary. Just about perfect! SJ had amazing strength and a drive that didn't stop. Each and every character fit together perfectly, whether good or bad. I was caught up in the story immediately and found myself laughing or angry or cringing. The author managed to draw me in at every turn. To be caught up in a book and feel a part of it is why I read. I get to escape and experience things I would normally not get to. Book provided by Raven PA Booktours in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely adore reading K.M. Thompson, she creates a wonderful world that draws you in and you just fall in love with the characters. I was happy to see some familiar faces from her Daylight Series. SJ is a strong fierce woman just trying to keep her family and friends together. Caleb is all hot alpha male and easy to love. The suspense was killing me and I had to slow myself down so I could take it all in. Another wonderful read!
Wow.. so Caleb is a spin off from the daylight series. It was so much fun to catch up on some of those characters in this story as well as learn about Caleb. It had a lot of suspense.. and a lot of drama. Some sad parts and some parts that made me laugh. I wanted to throw my kindle at the wall a few times as well. I really enjoy K.M.'s way of writing and how it always makes me feel like I am one of her characters. This was so much fun to read and I loved it
Caleb left the family business to start over after a death happened. He purchased property and everyone is gonna have to leave. He does everything in his power to protect one woman. The woman he loves.
This book was a great one. I loved Caleb. He's a determined man.
