After a successful initial tour as a Marine rifleman, Lance Corporal Gracie Medicine Crow volunteers to become a scout-sniper, one of the deadliest—and most dangerous—military specialties in the United Federation Marine Corps.
Gracie comes from the Apsáalooke Nation, a people with a long history of military tradition. Small in stature and considered stunningly beautiful, she is often underestimated, but that merely drives her to be the best sniper in the Corps. Driven by her need to excel, she tends to shut others out and focus on the mission at hand. But being a scout-sniper is far more than simple marksmanship. If she wants a career in the Corps, she must learn not only teamwork, but how to be a leader of Marines.
I am a retired Marine colonel and now a full-time writer living in Colorado Springs with my wife, Kiwi, and infant twin daughters, Danika Dawn and Darika Marie.
I published my first work back in 1978, a so-so short story titled "Secession." Since then, I have been published in newspapers, magazines, and in book format in fiction, political science, business, military, sports, race relations, and personal relations fields. I returned to writing fiction in 2009, and I currently have over 85 titles published, 52 being novels. My novelette, "Weaponized Math," was a finalist for the 2017 Nebula Award, and my novella, "Fire Ant," was a 2018 Nebula finalist. My novel "Integration" was a 2018 Dragon Award finalist, and my novel "Sentenced to War" was a 2021 finalist. I am a USA Today Bestelling writer.
My undergraduate degree was earned at the U. S. Naval Academy (Class of 1979), and I have attended graduate school at U. S. International University and the University of California, San Diego, earning a masters and doctorate. I am a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US. Naval Academy Alumni Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
I have rather eclectic tastes. I have won awards in photography, cooking, wrting, and several sports, earning national championships in rugby and equestrian events. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, cooking, going to the gym, or traveling. I attend quite a few cons over the course of a year, and love meeting other people who love books.
I write because I love it. I only hope that others might read my work and get a bit of enjoyment or useful information out of my efforts.
As an author, I don't think it is fair for me to rate any other author's books here on Goodreads if that rating is less than five stars. I have certainly read many books that do not deserve five (or four, three, or even two). However, I will not rate any of those here while I am a Goodreads author. Consequently, I will only be listing books that I really like and feel deserve five stars.
Sniper is a seldom seen exploration into the life of a sniper. These seldom recognized, often derided experts of death are feared by their enemies and ignored by their fellows. This is the story of one such individual, well told and well written. Read it and enjoy.
The task of a sniper only recently has been honoured. Even in the nineteenth sixties its was thought of as a horrendous job. Nothing a real solider would do. This story brings out the true fact of the multiplier a good scout/sniper is and will be.
This was an interesting story but I did find my mind wondering. The story is based on a military women and her career. It fast forwards a lot and skips over a few years through out. For me something is lacking, there is action but I just do not fill it. She has two love interests but that is about all we know. Gracie has a very interesting career that is full of killing people and saving other military personal through her talents. She is a very talented sniper and does an outstanding job. The author takes you through lose of friends, bring back some that should have been dead. This is a story base on the future and the technology we could only dream about.
Ms. Schnaubelt does a really good job with her narration, there are no repeat of words nor any background noises or anywhere that the volume changes. If any breaks where taken I could not tell. It is a very clean and clear audio that the narrator deliveries in a delightful way. After each chapter announcement there is a number I am unsure of what that is. I thought it was a page count but a lot of them have the same number which left me confused. Her character voices were outstanding you have no trouble understanding who is talking or what they are feeling. Her male voices were just as enjoyable as her female’s ones. She puts emotion into her read you can feel each emotion as the characters go through their day to day life. I thought her performance was great except for those numbers after each chapter. The narrator has a very pleasant voice that pulls you in giving you an in depth feel of the danger around them.
There is nothing in this book that really grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go. It isn’t boring at all just nothing that really held my attention. Too many years were skipped and I felt a lot had been left out. I enjoyed the audio just not one I would want to listen to again nor does it want me to want to read the other books in this series. It could be because I had not read the first one and I am missing something. I hope you will give it a try the narrator alone is worth the listen. You decided what you think of this and if it is something that you may want to listen to. It is a clean read which is pleasant.
A truly excellent read! It has it all, a main character from my state of Montana who also happens to be a great great... granddaughter of the warrior whose name graces the school down the street from my daughter, but who is also a kick ass Marine! The tension in the story coupled with what is involved with sniper action makes for a compelling tale. I just couldn't put it down. Do yourself a favor and read this book!!
A native American woman from a tribe in Montana enlists in the United Federation Marines as a sniper. She has a one-track mind, and that is the best sniper in service. It follows her from her initial post covering her doubts, her problems, and her solutions. It is entertaining and you will notice that the actions and descriptions of marines are based on the way things are in the US Marine Corps. Well worth the reading.
The story is not bad, but Grace comes across as a Mary Sue. She's an amazing shooter. She's made a sniper without having to be a spotter first. She sets the record for most kills and longest kill.
I did like her becoming a War Chief and her ties to the last War Chief (Joseph Medicine Crow).

I enjoyed this look into a snipers life in space. New planets to defend and lives to be saved. I also enjoyed the fact that the story covers Gracie's sniper history from beginning to retirement. She starts out a rough diamond but polished up just fine.
Gracie medicine Crow the heroine in this story makes you wish you new her the author has this knack of making you emotionally involved I highly recommend this book
Not bad. I enjoyed the real and imagined weapon details, and as with the last book, Brazee’s actual Marine service stiffens the spine of the book with believable details. Still, the plot is a bit thin / disjointed and perhaps a bit too much time is spent on scatological matters even if the dirty detail, if you will, is something appreciated because not often discussed in sci fi. 2.8 stars. I will read the third book but it’ll be a while, probably.
Newest novel in the author's series about interstellar Marines with lots in common with today's U.S. Marines. This is later in the history, where women are now accepted as Marines (and other military). This sub-series is about those women. The human civilization is still dominated by Big Business, but not as much as it was in the start of the series. A couple of generations have happened - and just like reality, change happens (if slowly).
The first part of the book is with the protagonist starting off as a Marine sniper. The end of the book is at the end of her career.
Sniper(Women of the United Federation Marines book 2
An excellent book. Twist and turns, technical details on the military that everyone might not know. Certainly a book to read and wait for the next one.
