Dead in the Water

Rate this book
Deputy coroner Mattie Winston is starting to feel like she’s in way over her head . . .

As the single mom of an energetic toddler and an investigator working for the medical examiner’s office in small-town Sorenson, Wisconsin, Mattie is used to her life being a juggling act. But now that she’s moved in with Detective Steve Hurley and his teenaged daughter Emily, and has started planning their wedding, her home life is looking more like a three-ring circus. And with her boss and friend, Izzy, suddenly having a health crisis, she could not be more grateful for the newest staff member in the ME’s office, Hal Dawson.

All too quickly her gratitude turns to shock when a floating body found trapped against a dam turns out to be Hal, but the cause of death isn’t drowning—his throat’s been slashed. Hal was supposed to be fishing on his day off with his girlfriend. And when their empty boat is found in a nearby lake, the whereabouts of the woman becomes an even more urgent question.

To find out what really happened to her coworker, Mattie may need to rock the boat. But a killer is just as determined to keep the truth from ever surfacing, even if that means making Mattie the next one to go under.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Mattie and Hurley have moved into together to raise their son, Matthew now that they have his teenage daughter Emily’s approval. A wedding will happen soon if they can squeeze it in around their hectic jobs. Mattie had thought her part-time schedule would free up some time but her new co-worker Hal Dawson was just found dead on his boat and his girlfriend is missing. On top of that her boss, Izzy is having some serious medical issues and a temporary Medical Examiner has stepped in. Mattie finds herself working closely with Hurley to find out why Hal was found Dead in the Water but the killer seems to be quite elusive and the bodies are piling up.

I do love that the series is set very close to where I actually live and that when they say someone is on their way to or from Madison or Milwaukee I can easily visualize the trip. It is fun when other landmarks are mentioned too.

I am so happy that Mattie, Hurley, Emily, and Matthew are all under one roof and they have come up with a plan to try to juggle everything in their complicated lives. They all seem really happy and I am excited about their future. I am concerned about Izzy and Dom. They are still finding their way with a new baby in the house and Izzy’s judgemental mother in the guest house. Izzy has a serious medical episode in this story and it was very scary. As you can see, I have become invested in these realistic genuine characters Ms. Ryan has created. The unique family dynamic is what really drives the books in this series.

This story grabbed me from the start. Mattie is in court testifying about a gruesome discovery she made when called to a scene for a suspicious death. Then as soon as she is done she is set to another scene for another death that has some unusual facets. Then she has to deal with Izzy which is followed quickly by the dead body found Dead in the Water. Are all or some of these cases related? That is up to Mattie and Hurley with a little assistance to figure out all while dealing with the joys of daily family life.

I really enjoyed the way the author plotted out this story. She mixes together mystery, suspense, family, and humor with such a talented hand. The story flows so well that it is almost impossible to put down due to some hair-raising twists and deadly turns. The ending just rocked me to the core. We have definitely moved from the cozy Stiff part of this series to the edgier hard-boiled Dead part of this series and I am more than fine with that.

Dead in the Water is my favorite book in this series so far. I am excited to dive into Dead Calm soon!

I usually love a Mattie Winston story, but I do not remember so many mundane details being written about in previous books. She went upstairs, she made the bed, she washed the dishes, she took Matthew to Desi's. She unlocked the door, set down the diaper bag, turned on the light...what is that? It's like she was trying to reach some kind of word number for the book. It was boring and totally not necessary. There is more mundane day to day stuff than there is story/mystery. And I could have done without the 10 (at least) references to poop.

I’ve waited for a long time for this book, then I decided to wait longer. Now, I wish I had waited even longer because the next one doesn’t come out until next year! Dead in the Water was an absolutely electrifying book. Filled with spine-chilling moments and relatable characters, it was a winner!

I love Mattie. Absolutely love her. She’s funny, honest, and, most importantly, real. Mattie is the type of character you’d expect to see in life, there is absolutely no stiffness when it comes to her. Hurley has definitely matured and evolved since his introduction into the series, and I really like him. I also love Emily and Matthew, both of which add another dimension to the plotline that wasn’t there before.

The mystery was excellent. It was really something I’d expect to find in a more thriller-ish book, but it was superb. It finished off with a cliffhanger, though, so we’ll have to see how it ends up when Dead Calm comes out next year.

Overall superb. One of my absolute favorite series, and a series I can’t recommend enough. Please, do yourself a favor and read these books. Highly recommend!

I was delighted to receive this books as Mattie Winston life story is a favorite from the first book I read. I went back and read the earlier ones. Mattie is now a single mother of a year two old son. She is living with Detective Stave Hurley and his daughter, Emily. As usual, Mattie's is hectic as Izzy has a heart attack and she is working with a stand in the coroner. The first death is of a young woman who has been dead awhile. Next the horror of finding her co-worker murder and his companion dead. Mattie and Steve begin to explore the facts and surprised to find evidence that Matti's estranged Father is involved. Mattie learns more information on the disappearance of her father. The various factors are skillfully brought together. I read this in one setting as I find I cannot put the books down. To get the full effect of the story read them in order but they can be read as a standalone as each story is complete with a tantalizing hint at further relevant information. I highly recommend this book and series.

Disclosure: I received a free copy from Kensington Books through NetGalley for an honest review. I would like to thank them for this opportunity to read and review the book. The opinions expressed are my own.

If you want a quick, light read it will be worth your time. If you want literature, pass it by. I found it to be tedious after the first 100 pages or so. The overly cutesy descriptions of her son also got on my nerves.

Some book series it seems like the time creeps by so slowly that you will swear the woman has been pregnant for over two years. However, author Annelise Ryan doesn't handle her series that way at all. To me. her series seems very realistic both in the situations they find themselves involved in and the way her characters age. As a mother, I especially enjoyed the way little Matthew (around age 2) has gone from being a baby to a pottie training terror. Ms Ryan presents him in such a way that you fall in love with the little guy as well as chuckle to yourself being glad you don't have to clean up after him! Although he has nothing to do with the mysteries within the book, it is good characters like this that make the entire reading experience so pleasant.

I also like the way Mattie deals with two individuals who are mentally challenged in this story. One we have met before, and one we only meet briefly. But again, the interaction between Mattie and those young men and the qualities of the characters make the book stronger. Obviously the author excels at making her characters fit the book and seem like real people. Another case in point is Izzy, Dom and even Izzy's mother. Their roles in this book are secondary, but essential to the well rounded picture we end up with of Mattie and Hurley.

Aside from excellent characters, Ms Ryan knows how to tell a story and weave a lot of seemingly unrelated details into a stunning mystery and conclusion. I was saddened by the deaths of people we have "known" fr0m previous books, and wished that could have been avoided. However the end result is a believable story with a surprising ending and many twists and surprises in between.

Although this is a series and is best read in order, if I were to pick just one book from the series to share, it would be this one. The joy and sorrow in it and secrets revealed make it a favorite. My only complaint was the author never explained a list of notes written in code that pertained to the mystery. I am hoping there will be further information about that and a convicted man, Thomas, in the next book! One way or the other, I hope Ms Ryan writes quickly because I can hardly wait to see what happens next!

I don't know how to rate this book. The mystery)plot was good and engaging. But the focus on the domestic life (and toddler poop) annoyed me no end. Certainly the home life of the detectives is important and it works well for me in the Gemma James and Duncan Kincaid series but this just wore me down . I may read more of the series but it won't be my first ( or second) choice.

Mattie Winston has toddler who doesn't want to potty train, a teenage stepdaughter, and a fiancé who wants her to pick a wedding date and stick to it. She also has a three murder victims, one of whom is her coworker, Hal.

This may be one of the best additions to this series yet. The characters are always completely relatable, and I love that the author always puts realistic life situations in the story. What parent among us hasn't woken up to a baby with poo all over them or had a fight with their mother?

The mystery was compelling - well, actually both mysteries, and the ending was a surprise. The family mystery ended the way I guessed it would, but it was still interesting. Definitely recommend!

Dead in the Water by Annelise Ryan is the 8th book in the Mattie Winston Mysteries series. Deputy Coroner, Mattie Winston, investigates the death of a co-worker and his girlfriend while juggling motherhood, planning a wedding and helping her boss Izzy through a health crisis. A fabulous book with a lot going on. I love catching up with all the characters and I love Mattie who is samrt and very capable. The mystery itself was complex and seemed incomplete, even though elements came together at the end, we are left with a lot of unanswered questions. Likely we will learn more in the next books. A well written and very entertaining book.

Another good addition to the series and the introduction of a new nickname. Not sure Squatch is the most endearing; but hey, they're finally married. I'm also getting used to the dual plots happening in these, although this one seemed to have 2 other minor subplots working as well. Quick, fun listen.

Review:

The characters are well developed, well rounded and three dimensional. Mattie is smart, sarcastic, loyal and a hard worker. I enjoyed reading about her struggles to juggle her home life, professional life and romantic life. She seemed like a genuine character to me, having flaws like everyone else. She loves her family fiercely and will do anything to keep them safe. Steve Hurley, Mattie’s boyfriend and father of her child, is a detective who will stop at nothing to be sure justice is served. Working together with Mattie, they are willing to delve into any mysteries that they encounter. Matthew, their toddler son, added much humor to the story and I loved reading about him throughout the book. The secondary characters were also well developed and added a lot to the story.

The author is very talented in building suspense with the written word and throughout the book the tension just kept building, page after page. I was swiping pages as fast as I could, wanting to see what was going to happen next, but afraid to find out. There are a few mysteries to solve in this book, which the author weaved together expertly.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author combines suspense, tension, humor and family love into a really great story.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted mystery with great characters, a great story line and plenty of suspense. I have read most of the books in this series and I have really enjoyed them all. This is a must read series.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Mattie is an investigator for the coroner's office, and lives a chaotic life with her detective boyfriend Steve Hurley, his daughter, and their toddler son. She's finally agreed to marry Steve, but who has time to plan a wedding? Especially now, when there are two murders that concern her own office, and her beloved boss Izzy has had a heart attack. His substitute seems easy to work with, but she still worries about Izzy. The murders get mixed up with a lot of conspiracy theory fodder, and are only semi-resolved, but Mattie does get some answers about her long-absent father, so series regulars will be pleased.

Mattie is juggling life with a two-year-old, a job as Deputy Coroner, her live-in fiance, Police Detective Steve Hurley, and his teenage daughter makes every day a three ring circus. Adding the pressure of planning a wedding has her way over her head. When she and Steve are called to the scene of an unexplained death, a whole new set of problems begin. The victim is a young woman with no evident cause of death, but she is just the start. Mattie's boss, Izzy, has a heart attack and two more deaths occur. The victims are a colleague, Hal Dawson, and his girlfriend. Mattie's long-lost father is in town, lying low, and Mattie fears he might be involved.

I have been reading the Mattie Winston mysteries from the beginning. Dead in the Water is a little darker and the humor not as wacky as in some of the others. This is still an entertaining entry in the series and moves the story of Steve and Mattie in a positive direction. They have overcome a lot of obstacles and make a great team.

Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for an advance digital copy in return for an honest review.

Dead in the Water Mattie Winston Mysteries 8
Best read in order.

In A Nutshell:Somewhere amongst the baby poo is a murder mystery, and Mattie's life laid bare.

The Plot: Mattie's colleague Hal and his girlfriend are dead. It is murder but who is responsible? Mattie's father, a defendant from another case or somebody else entirely?

The Protagonist: The very tall and voluptuous Mattie is a fun, self-deprecating, intelligent and caring character. We need more Matties in the world.

I like Mattie Winston, but where has all the fun gone? I read these books because they are good cosies guaranteed to bring a smile.

This book strikes a sombre tone, and there is way too much baby pooh. Sorry folks but I find Mattie's son brattish and uncute. I felt sorry for her mother, and the wedding didn't lift the mood. Reading was a slog, but I got to the end.

I want my happy Mattie back.

looking at reviews people love this series, I'm not sure why, to me it was kind of blah. And I don't understand why a medical examiner or investigator is actually acting like a detective running around following leads and looking for clues. there's obviously a lot of back story I've missed and reviews have mentioned humour in the books, I didn't see any in this one, but maybe the others are funny. I won't avoid this series but i won't go looking for more either.

I am thoroughly enjoying the audiobook versions of this series. So I was very disappointed in this book as it was very boring. It may be because there isn't any angst between the MCs as they are now engaged and living together.
The humor and witty banter is missing from this story.
Hurley and Mattie's son Matthew was the highlight for me.
The author needs to move away from Mattie's estrangement from her father, as that storyline is stale and boring.

I am a person who tends to read a series of books in order; I start with the first book and go straight through to the one most recently published. When I came across Book 9 in this series, I put it aside so I could read the books 1-8 first. And so I am a tad disgusted that once I got to the fifth book, it became nearly impossible to fdind books 6 and 7; the cost was awfully high for USED paperback with no new books available, and I am not yet a person who downlaods my books. So, eventually, I broke down and read this book, the eighth in the series, about a month after completing #5. It was a lot like being away from good friends and having to catch up on what had been going on during their absence. To Ryan's credit, I did get caught up: I just wish I could have been there to share in all the ups and downs as Mattie and Hurley got together... Because as this book begins, Mattie is planning their wedding....
That being said, I did enjoy this book, although I felt a little frustrated at the end, knowing that although Mattie had helped to catch the murderer, the real folks behind the murders had not been caught. (At least I have book 9 in hand so I can move on quickly...) The three (maybe four?) murders in the book at first seem unrelated. Mattie is testifying at the trial for the person suspected (and later convicted, thanks in part to Mattie's work and tetimony) of murder number one. On the heels of her testimony follow three more murders -- and one is a friend of Matties, a fellow worker in the coroner's office.
Mattie and Hurley work together, following leads, while also navigating a household that includes Hurley's teen-aged daughter (Last I knew she and Mattie weren't getting along so well, but I guess I'll never know how that worked itself out), their young son (Yup, Mattie hadn't even told Hurley she was pregnant; would have loved to have known what happened there), two cats and a dog. And they are helped in their investigation by the local nosey news reported. (What?! She used to be a royal pian, but now she's an ally! Aughhh.)

Enjoying as usual right amount of tension, personal aspects, and investigating. This one gets very personal for MC, and its handled well. Just hate when the characters offer really stupid comments.

This is a really good one, and so much going on. Which is how life can be, all these challenging overlapping events. The ending is rushed, "okay let's just make it happen." The mysteries are both a bit tedious and also well put together. The 'final reveal' tie-up over dramatic and unrealistic. A good read, not so much a 'satisfying' tale.

I started in the middle of this series and finally caught up with this story. This kept me on the edge of my chair and I enjoyed all the drama and mysterious deaths. Meg finally finds out about the real reason her father left her and her mother. At this point I was really angry at her mom and then I was angry with Mattie because she could not forgive her father. Now that Mattie is a mom, I would think she could understand the reason her father left. Though I'm not sure I could forgive my mom for her decisions. I have enjoyed learning about each of the characters and I'm sorry some of them had to die. It seems that Mattie and Steve will be trying to solve a huge scandal while trying to keep their own lives and family safe. I also think her father will play a more important role in future stories.

Love this series

This time death hits close to home when Hal who works with Mattie gets murdered Mattie and Hurley have to work out who is behind it and as they work they discover secrets about Mattie's past. I love this series and just love Hurley and Mattie and all the side characters which now include their son Mathew. This book has a fantastic story line with a lot of twists and turns. It has also has a good ending. What i love about this series is the descriptions of a normal life. A toddler who refuses to use the potty and throws tantrums, to a teenager who will babysit any time for her fun money to Hurley and Mattie trying to decide where to go next in their lives.

Dead in the Water is the eighth mystery in the Mattie Winston Mystery Series. As I read, I suspected it was not a standalone, but I was unaware of the number of books preceding it. The author fills the reader in on the background of characters from previous books very effectively and efficiently.

Some readers refer to Dead in the Water as a cozy mystery. It deviates from the typical cozy mystery in its focus on forensic investigation of crimes, as is found in two popular television shows: the more current C.S.I. and the older series Quincy, M.E. Initially as I read the descriptive portions, I could hear echoes of my teenage self: “Eew! GROSS!” and I determined that I could not possibly rate it with 5/5 stars. As I read on, however, I became absorbed by the complex mystery, interesting characters, and complicated relationships. I even came to admire the way the author handles the depictions of dead bodies and autopsies--just graphic enough for visualization without unnecessary repetition or exploration of details.

Another different feature of this cozy mystery is that the main character, Mattie, is an employee of the medical examiner’s office. Her job description is “medico-legal death investigator.” That position gives her access to medical and investigative information that would normally be denied to the general public. It also gives her a reason to be involved in the discovery of so many crimes, as opposed to the typical, hapless female lead who unbelievably, repeatedly stumbles into crime scenes. Her job makes her able to work WITH the book’s love interest, Detective Steve Hurley, rather than have to work around him. In this book, the tension about flow of information, normally assigned to the heroine and the investigative romantic interest, is taken on by a reporter who has developed a rapport with the crime fighting duo.

By the end of Dead in the Water, I was sold on the merits of this book despite queasiness at its post-mortem perspective. The author even manages to introduce a touch of humor in the midst of death. Ryan is inclusive of a variety of non-traditional families in a way that feels like an attempt at being politically correct. Although the writing is good, with so many interesting mysteries waiting to be read, I will probably not read more books in this series. I do recommend it for those devotees of forensic science mysteries.

I would like to extend my thanks to netgalley.com and to Kensington Books for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Another great book in this series! Mattie and Matthew have moved in with Hurley and Emily and Mattie and Hurley are planning their wedding. After Mattie's co-worker Hal and his girlfriend are found murdered, it appears that their deaths are connected to another recent death. Somehow, Mattie's father fits into all of this as well. Izzy is out after having a heart attack, so Mattie and Hurley are on the hunt for answers. This was a great book with an ending that was both sad and happy. I really love the characters and the storylines. I look forward to seeing what's next for Mattie and Hurley and hopefully getting some answers to the storyline that began in this book.

Things between Mattie and Hurley are progressing. Mattie has agreed to marry him, now all they need to do is plan the wedding and find a venue. (The one they planned to use fell through a sinkhole.)
The other problem is trying to find time to actually GET MARRIED since they have three murder cases to solve (well, two are connected, the third one we don't know.) And it looks like Matties's father might be involved this time.
Very good story, but per my usual caution, if descriptions of dead bodies upset you be cautious. The ending left some unanswered questions, but I assume they will be resolved in either the next book or future installments. Looking forward to the next book.
