Heroine was not likeable!! A word that I found to associate with her was brat. Repeatedly! Get over yourself already!!

This was a most unlikeable heroine. I found her off putting and she had no warmth to her. She came across entitled and unreasonable. The hero was all right. These two kept secrets from each other, their communication was greatly lacking and not much in the spark or sexual tension department. I can't say that I ever felt that they fell in "love" or had a true romance.

The writing was disappointing as it never really engaged me. It was a slow read and in parts felt the conflict was silly and redundant. Normally enjoy Diana Cosby books but this one was a disappointment.

Katherine killed the book for me.

1. She has something to prove: A woman had no rights and were oppressed back then. I know. I know why sometimes people feel rebellious, why they want to show that they were just as capable. I understand the sentiments, but I don't like to respond to such bullying by getting upset. Being emotional about it never helped anybody. And being reckless only goes to prove that women deserve to be treated like we are emotional and unreasonable. Katherine had skills with a blade. Like all weapon-waving heroines, she believed she could go to war. She joined the training and challenged her husband in front of his men. I have to ask: why? Just to prove that you can? You can never win by force. You can only win by wit. So why make such a big deal out of fighting on the battlefield? I thought her extremely stupid.

2. Her pride: I know we all like a woman with a spine. But I maintain that having a spine is not the same as being prideful. Katherine was prideful. So unattractive.

3. A marriage without intimacy: Our clever Katherine proposed that. And our hero agreed to it. I am not an expert on medieval marriages. But I get really irritated with such bs in a historical setting. I believe in practicality and make the best out of whatever situation you are in. "Withholding sex to show contempt" is not my cup of tea. Katherine resented Stephan. And I don't even know why. I think Stephan had more reasons to despise her. But he was polite if not loving. And Katherine, it's not as if Stephan was panting after you. Get down from your high horse and know that he never wanted you either. So stop playing the victim already.

I disliked Katherine a lot. The book suffered in my eyes because of my feelings about her.

Murder, mayhem, a determined woman, and the Knights Templar!

How can I not be beguiled by such a combination!
And then there's the SECRETS!
Secrets held by all the characters involved! In fact as I reflect just about every person met or mentioned seems to have been holding some sort of secret that will affect the story's resolution. (Even down to the fisherfolk and their knowledge of hidden bays.)
Lady Katherine Calbraith of Avalon Castle watches her family cut down before her eyes by the English invaders. Determination, cunning and opportunity speed her escape to her godfather's protection. Robert the Bruce assists her but in an unexpected way.
She will return as the wife of a trusted knight, Stephan MacQuistan, a Knight Templar who, along with his men, is carrying out the orders of his Grand Master. They are to use secret ways to enter the castle and wrest it back from the English.
Not the outcome Katherine wanted. And yes she has her secrets about the why of that too. And yes she's totally in the dark about Stephen being a Knight Templar
And here's the rub! Stephen's father was killed by Katherine's father, another fact Katherine is unaware of. To reclaim his legacy, Stephen must we'd the daughter of his enemy. A conundrum indeed! This is more of the secrets that will enshroud Katherine and Stephen and their quest.
I admit to becoming frustrated with Katherine at times. Especially when she placed Stephen in danger with her willingness to rush into situations she'd been instructed not to. Still these times did set up opportunities for the storyline to take further flight.
A strong and compelling storyline from Diana Cosby that I became thoroughly engrossed in!
A great beginning to an exciting new series!

**I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**

I am not sure about this book and since I read an uncorrected proof - I am going to go easy in this review.

Here is what I didn't really like about the book:

I didn't really like Katherine or Stephan - they both were keeping secrets from the other and both acted unreasonable at times.

This book did not flow well and felt disjointed - I still can't tell you when these two fell in love or even why they fell in love. One minute they are bickering and then the next they realize they love each other - but because of the previously mentioned secrets, they can't let the other know.

Here is what I did like:

I really enjoyed learning about the disbanding of the Knights Templar - it was really well done and fascinating.

I liked that Ms. Cosby was able to convey to me the difficulty that Stephan had transitioning from a Templar to a husband. It was perfectly done.

While this is not the best book I have read by Ms. Crosby and I can't consider it a keeper. I am not sorry I read it and I will definitely continue with the series.

If you enjoy a Scottish historical romance laced with a Robert the Bruce and Templar Knights theme, you will likely want to read Forbidden Legacy by Diana Cosby. Lady Catherine Calbraith and Templar Knight Stephan MacQuistan, the main couple, are linked to this theme intricately, as well as to each other, long before they even meet. How ironic it is that Robert the Bruce is the one to quickly put the pieces together and push these unlikely soulmates together so fate can step in and take over. Even more surprising is his deeply personal interest in doing so.

What did I like about this book? Well, I am a big fan of a strong heroine, who is still in need of a handsome hero. Both characters did not disappoint in that regard. Though we are told briefly how she was forced to witness the murder of her family, Catherine had the courage and determination to escape a dungeon, seek Bruce’s help, then return to Avalon, to continue her family’s legacy. She did so with nightmares still fresh from that horrific ordeal, as well as from a past sexual assault when she was only 15. Btw, the story begins with her arrival to seek Bruce’s help in retaking Avalon. Her escape is only vaguely explained later on.

Stephan stepped up to the plate when he agreed to marry Catherine, at Bruce’s command, so he could return to Avalon, as he also wished to restore his heritage there. He was especially in desperate need of the hidden caverns Catherine mentioned so he could hide/secure some of the Templar Knight’s treasure. He did so still under a hatred-filled assumption Catherine’s father was to blame for the death of his father, mother, and sister, when Catherine’s family was first given Avalon. He then planned to leave Avalon as soon as possible to continue his knightly duties, btw. He did not plan to make a permanent home with her. Nor did she think they would either. My true romantic at heart side didn’t particularly take to that notion.

With several twists and turns, these two characters will each receive two life-changing big reveals about their lives that changes everything they thought they ever knew. Most of the storyline was centered on the voyage to Avalon and their time spent at the castle, while they continued to dance around each other and get accustomed to the fact they were now married.

What did I have issues with? This book had quite a bit of back and forth in regards to the romance. Neither wanted the marriage, and I think they didn’t even have their first kiss until almost halfway through. Throw in Catherine’s inability to even be touched by a man without thinking of the assault, and it took quite awhile for them to become intimate. I guess ultimately I felt it was rather slow paced when it came to their relationship. Then once they were finally a couple, Stephan’s big reveal had him pushing her away. He thought she would think less of him once she knew the truth. As their discoveries happened close to the ending, it didn’t take long for them to talk through their new realities and embrace/accept each other/let go of their past.

Overall, this book only had one brief, life-threatening scenario where one of the main characters is injured. It pretty much just seemed to cruise along to the big reveals then its final conclusion. I did find myself skimming over large parts of it, when it strayed from the romantic plot, because that’s just how I roll, folks. I appreciate authentic Scottish history details, such as the Templar Knights, but I’m unashamedly all about romance.

Here’s to hoping my review gives you enough insight to determine if this book appeals to you.

Goodreads Romance Safety Gang: It is implied the hero was inexperienced (meaning a virgin), due to his Templar vows, but didn't come right out an call him a virgin. We were told heroine was raped at age 15 but, thankfully, were not given a graphic reenactment. She still had a hard time being touched or even looked at by men. Neither wanted this arranged marriage but did so because they each had an agenda and their king wanted them to marry. Neither thought they would actually live together all the time, since he was a knight and fought for the crown, and she had intimacy issues. It was back and forth quite a bit until they realized they loved each other. Even then they had issues to work out. At one time or another they did keep pushing each other away.

Title: Forbidden Legacy, Series: Forbidden (Book 1), Author: Diana Cosby, Pages: 348, stand-alone, heroine was raped at 15, MC both get two big reveals, arranged marriage at first, eventually fall in love, wasn’t a particularly heart-stopping romance, hero finally figures out heroine has intimacy issues and patiently tries to help her, strong but emotion heroine, hero learns there is more to life than being a Templar knight.

Forbidden Legacy by Diana Cosby

This the first book in Diana Cosby's sensational new (The Forbidden series)! Coming out August 16th 2016. This novel is about a marriage neither wants, a revenge both want for similar reasons, but with shocking results!

Scotland, September 1307

A Scottish Woman Lady Katherine Cailbraith is forced to watch her entire family being brutally murdered by the English. They try to force her hand which she refuses to marry the evil English Earl who forced her to watch as he murdered her family. Unknown to them there are many secret passageways in Avalon Castle the English overtook and Katherine's birthright and home. She was taken prisoner to the dungeon after refusing to marry the English murdering Earl! Unknown to the English, their is a secret passageway in the dungeon which aides Katherine's escape! She escapes to her Godfathers Home asking for help. Her Godfather just happens to be Scotland's King, Robert the Bruce. Just shocked as what his suggestion is!

At the same time the Templar Knight Sir Stephan MacQuistan also needs help after the forced disbanded Templar Knights . The evil French King stirred lies and rumors charging the Knights with heresy and wanting their riches for his kingdom’s wealth and selfish needs. Who doesn't believe a royal King? So the few escaped with their lives and were advised to forget their previous vows and start a new life. Their first priority it to to safeguard and hide the Templars fortune, for this they needed help from an ally. The ally is King Robert, the Bruce of Scotland. Stephan is not happy with the suggestion to marry the daughter of the man who had slaughtered his family as a lad. Of course he loves the idea of possessing his family's again. He wants revenge though he knows Katherine is blameless for her sires evil deeds. He is would never harm or hurt the lass for her father's misdeeds as Stephan has been brought up by the Templars to be a fair, good and honest man.

Katherine had tragedy happen in her teenage years that has scarred her deeply and has no trust of men. She reveals this to no one onky the ones present at the time know of this misery, Stephan vowing celibacy as a Templar monk has no intimate experience of women but he isn't dead and is immediately attracted to Katherine's beauty, her intelligence and kindness. He was shocked by King Robert demands of marriage and protection of his Godfather, but agrees as now he will be training and on missions for the Bruce. Plus his revenge is sweet to be master of his murdered family's home, but he never plans on revealing the truth to his wife about her father.Feeling it would cause Katherine more hurt and devastation, yet wouldn't abandonment? It makes one wonder about his complicated thought process.

Stephan figures he can set her aside be married in name only as they plan to go to war and take Avalon castle back. He is surprised that she is easily agreed to no intimacy for the wedding night and for the time being. He is shocked that this wisp of a girl basically blackmailed their King and has to accompany them and only then will she share to secrets and hidden passageways to Avalon Castle. Something Stephan is furious about!

His men earn Katherine's respect immediately and see this as a good match for their brother and leader. Then to find her an expert with a sword enhances her even more each willing to teach her more sword tactics in lessons. Stephan see's this as hindrance but sooner or later his eyes begin to open just as other problem pile up for this couple. Katherine see's Stephan as a handsome good man and worries he will turn to another when he finds out she can't be touched by another man ever! Stephan is not aware of her assault as a teenager. What future can these two possibly have? The attraction becomes apparent, but is that enough? Secrets always seem to reveal themselves in one way or another eventually. Shocking ending.

This book was absolutely riveting adventure filled with secrecy, mayhem, brutality, betrayal, trust, faith, hope and love. It has so many twists and turns and more than one shocking surprise! Superbly written, brilliant plotting, setting and dialogue! I can hardly wait for book #2 in this spectacular The Forbidden series! Ms. Cosby definitely has the magic touch of drawing the reader in and keep them fascinated with anticipation wondering what could possible happen next!

I loved, loved, loved this novel and highly recommend it! It is one readers surely don't want to miss! A total masterpiece in my opinion.

Forbidden Legacy by Diana Cosby is what promises to be an exciting new series, #1 "The Forbidden" series. Set in Medevial Scotland. This a story of the Knights of Templar, their history, and the wondrous question, what really happened to them, and of falling in love.
As with most of Ms Cosby's stories, she weaves historical facts with Scotland's lush history, and countryside, along with danger, passion, secrets and romance.

First up, we have the, Lady Katherine Calbraith, of Avalon castle, whose family has been murdered by the English, which she's made to watch, and the castle taken over, of course she escapes and manages to get to King Robert the Bruce, her Godfather. Make no mistake, Katherine is a feisty, independent, strong-willed Lass, whose determination to regain her beloved home back from the English, could end in diaster, and the death of them all. There are secrets that surrounds her, some she doesn't know of herself. As a teenager she was assaulted, which, of course, makes her leery of men, intimacy, and she struggles with control.
Then we have, Knights Templar, Sir Stephan MacQuistan, a strong supported of his King, Robert the Bruce, who forces him and Katherine to marry, he has secrets of his own, he also is entrusted with a rich cargo, which belongs to the Templars. They travel by ship to Avalon to regain the castle and battle storms, and their growing, unwanted feelings. Stephan, is conflicted by his marriage, and struggles to make sense of his growing feelings, and the his secrets.
A struggle to regain Avalon castle begins, as they look for catacombs hidden beneath the castle to hide their precious cargo.
Can Katherine and Stephan learn to trust each other, heal from their past, and learn to love with abandon, to find their HEA, or lose all to their stubbornness and pride?

Ms. Cosby has weaved a tale of struggles, challenges, secrets, a battle to regain Avalon castle, into a story rich with history.
"Forbidden Legacy" is a very complicated, complex, tale with many secrets, challenges and struggles. Very realistic with well-developed, strong-willed characters, and a mesmerizing storyline.
I enjoyed this story. I did want to hit both Katherine and Stephen for their stubbornness and pride. As they both struggle with their pasts, long buried secrets revealed, finally learning the truth, and learning to let go and enjoy finding true love.
Ms. Cosby has written a tale rich with history, strong characters and a superb storyline. She is a very talented author, and it shows in her writing, her characters and her storylines. A must read Scottish Medieval Historical Romance. Fans of romance, Templar history, struggle, challenges and a mesmerizing tale, will enjoy "Forbidden Legacy". Captivating, powerful, compelling and mesmerizing. I can't wait to see what's next in the "Forbidden Legacy". I hope to read Thomas' story soon, and some of the other Templars. The Templars legacy is such a mystery, fastinatng to me, rich with history, their chivalry is well known as well as their fight in the Holy Crusades. Brilliantly written! I highly recommend "Forbidden Legacy". I absolutely loved this story. An awesome, enjoyable and satisfying read!

This is the beginning of a new series, her third, for author Diana Cosby. Since I’ve read most of her books, I find her story lines always unique, and her stories are a real pleasure to experience. It is my practice not to read the teaser of the next book in the series, usually following the story. However, in this case, I could not stop myself! Her stories have engaging plots with awesome description.

Yes, dear reader, she’s a talented writer who writes in a genre I tend to read a lot. She weaves history within the story in a non-contrived way, while her characters live in a believably thrilling world with complex and challenging obstacles to overcome.

I’ve read other books about the Knights Templar, their way of life, their vows and commitment to God. However, this story starkly brought to life the desperate struggle for survival after King Philip betrayed them. (Sigh) The greed of man has no bounds.

Sir Stephan MacQuiston is brought into the thick of it. A dedicated Knight Templar since a young man, now lost his vocation. The General Master told the knights to disband. But how can men change when they have devoted their existence to God and led a certain lifestyle? Their Templar frame of mind continues even though they no longer officially exist..

I like how the author brings out the strength of this woman, whose parents she was forced to watch killed by the Earl of Preswick. She is placed in a dungeon because she refuses to marry the man. In addition, she has the wit and intelligence to escape the captivity, and has a compassionate nature which is most beneficial when dealing with her new husband.

Lady Katherine had a stubborn streak. She came to the king, her godfather, to help her regain her home, Avalon Castle. She would not let these Englishmen take her home. The king grants her wish to return to her home to regain it, on the condition she marries Sir Stephan.

Here is an excerpt where Lady Katherine questions why men become evil.

Why was there so much evil? How could people believe status or wealth would bring satisfaction? Dinna they realize that regardless of whether they achieved their goals, they couldna find warmth in a gold coin at night, nor would a castle or country conquered offer anything but duty.

Immersed in their need to keep their spoils from all who sought to claim their power or wealth, the vicious cycle would begin again. In the end, those who held riches earned naught but the burden of defenindg all they amassed.

A sad life indeed.

Each hold a secret, but there are other secrets neither of them are aware. Sir Stephan’s is he’s a Templar Knight, and Earl of Dunsmore by birth right. Lady Katherine’s father was the man who killed his father and mother and caused the death of his sister.

Lady Katherine’s is she cannot bear a man’s touch. She was raped as a young girl and the act haunts her to this day.

Their greatest flaw? Both are burdened with past events which dictate their present happiness.

Truly a lovely read with rich characters you learn to care about and cheer them on their journey as they find mutual admiration, friendship and selfless love. Challenging bumps and surprising twists add further interest creating a thoroughly engaging read. I highly recommend Diana Cosby’s novels.

That which makes us different is what draws us together as one

Sir Stephan MacQuistan and Lady Katherine Calbraith have little in common but one thing that binds them besides their sudden marriage, Avalon Castle the place they both know as home just in different times. Stephan has been given the honor to run the Clan with the catch that he must wed Katherine and as prickly as she is it may work out. Stephan has taken a vow of celibacy as deemed through his participation as a Knights Templar so they will marry in name only and that is fine with Katherine because she will not be told what to do by any man. Katherine can handle the duties of the castle as well as a sword without missing a beat and if marriage to Stephan is the only way she can get back home then so be it.

During the long voyage across the waters Stephan and Katherine learn bits and pieces about each other but the secrets they withhold are ones that truly could ruin the strongest of relationships which theirs is not. Stephan pushes to control his cankerous wife, while Katherine shoves at her possessive husband. What the two do find after the long journey is common ground on which they have unexpectedly built a relationship that runs deep into the soul of both of them. When they land and take back what is rightfully theirs the damage is great but so is the determination to rebuild and while they are toiling away inside the castle it seems a meeting of body and souls will begin and the layers of distrust wash away with every kiss and tender moment they show toward the other.

The shadow that remains is the history Stephan has with Avalon Castle and the hatred he carries for Katherine’s recently deceased father. Katherine has nothing but happiness and glows when she speaks of her time with the man she knows as her father and Stephan refuses to speak of his past only the future they will build. When it is necessary to dig through papers, ledgers, and books hidden about the keep both Stephan and Katherine find themselves each in for the shock of a lifetime. How could everything they believe about their individual past not have a word of truth to back it up. When they have both divulged the knowledge will love prevail or perish? Their feelings are strong but are have been built on smoke and mirrors and now it is time to show the facts and accept the truth.

Diana Cosby writes each book with the magical combination of romance, relationship, and reality check for her characters. Readers should be prepared to forgo any other part of their life from the moment they start page one of Diana Cosby's stories as you are hooked until the end.

My Thoughts:

This is another well thought out and well written book by Diana Cosby. I have been reading her books since I picked up a paperback copy of "His Captive" when it was newly released. It was a bargain from Zebra so I thought I'd give it a chance. I wasn't disappointed then and have not been since.
This one had more sexual tension than actual sexual scenes, but that was nice for a change.
I gave this one a 3.75 star rating. It was a very good read but not a great one from one of my favorite authors.
I received a digital ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you are looking for a fairy tale rather than deep historical fiction then this book might be one you will like. I enjoyed reading a bit about the Knights Templar and researched a few things about them, Robert the Bruce and Edward II while reading this book.

As for the story…men committed to God take vows of celibacy and Stephan MacQuistan is ones of those men as are the knights he is in charge of. Finding himself married to Lady Katherine Calbraith is something he never expected – for more than one reason. There is a slow build between them that eventually provides them with a HEA but it takes some doing to get there.

I had trouble believing that a woman on her own would be able to escape from the dungeon, make her way some distance to her godfather for help then be sent by him alone with her husband and his men without a lady’s maid or other female as companion on the trip. I also had trouble believing that a woman of status living in that era would have behaved as she did. She was rather mouthy and obnoxious and many times seemed closer to ten than to twenty. She put herself and others in danger and as other reviewers have mentioned, her pride and bickering were wearing. As for Stephan…he had a rough childhood, became a knight, fought and had expectations for his life and they probably included dying without a wife and doing so on a battlefield. His ability to adapt and his kindness were great qualities. His lack of people skills in regard to women was perhaps overdone because he did have a sister and mother for at least awhile. There was a lot of posturing, pounding of chests and pissing contests between the two of them that could have easily been resolved if they had been willing to communicate with one another honestly.

I liked the men with Stephan, especially Thomas. It will be interesting to find out who they end up with now that they are freed of their vows taken when they became Knights Templar.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I had a great time reading about The Knights Templar in this book. It’s one side of history I never fully grasped but “Forbidden Legacy” had some interesting facts which prompted me to do further research & understand them a whole lot better. The writing style was good & so was the vernacular which I felt was quite authentic for medieval Scotland & it set the mood for the story quite nicely.
Lady Katherine seeks revenge on the English who have seized Avalon Castle, her family home. She escapes & seeks aid from Robert The Bruce, her godfather, who agrees to help her under the condition she marries Sir Stephan Macquistan, a Knights Templar. Both of them find themselves in an unwanted & sudden marriage but with means to claim both their legacies as Avalon Castle is also Stephan’s ancestral home unbeknownst to Katherine.

The blurb is promising & the twists sound interesting enough but both Stephan & Katherine ruin the book for me. They just bickered & BICKERED for half the book & it was just so exhausting reading about their quarrels. They were both so ANNOYING! There was no sexual tension to make it even remotely interesting. Their “love” was too sudden as they went from fighting to being in love in a matter of pages which was too sudden & not believable at all. The book does improve slightly after they fall in love (as they stop bickering thankfully!) but by now it was too late for redemption & I just wanted the book to be over & couldn’t care less what happened to them both!

I've read this author before and she's been a hit or miss for me most of the time. This one, a first in The Forbidden series, was on the cusp of miss, and the only reason for it is the heroine who I found a bit grating on my nerves and whose pride kept her from accepting the hero for who he was. As I delved more into her past, I started liking her a bit better.

The hero was a surprise because of his background and my heart went out to him. There were some of his characteristics that I wasn't such a fan of, but in the end I did understand him much better than I did the heroine.

In the end, the author won me over only because she does an excellent job of painting me a picture of medieval Scotland with such vivid colors that I may as well been there myself.

I liked the premise of this and the upcoming stories, of the Knight Templar's history. It's fascinating to dig deeper into who they were and what made them tick. Ms. Cosby does an excellent job in weaving historical facts with fiction and that's what kept me reading this book until the end.

All in all, not bad for a start of the new series. Since I've met a few of our heroes friends, I'm looking forward to finding out about who'll tame them.

I loved the history in this book - Knights Templars! I also thought it is a very good beginning to a promising series. However, I can only give it three stars because of the heroine. Yes, I can't even begin to understand or relate to the trauma she experienced. And, I get it that she was singularly focused on reclaiming her legacy and vengeance. But, she was selfish, reckless and a spoiled brat.

Putting that aside, I'm looking forward to the next book.

A knight Templar

Commanded by Robert the Bruce to marry, Stephen is torn by his vow to the Knights Templar. By marrying, Katherine, the daughter of the man who killed his family, he gains revenge and the home he lost years ago. Unfortunately they both carry secrets that could destroy the love and trust they eventually have for each other. An emotionally gripping love story during a horrible time in history for the Knights Templar.

A newly discovered gem

I bought this book as a discounted trial read and what an unexpected and pleasant surprise. Diana Cosby created a strong and interesting storyline along with characters in which I was truly interested. I will be reading more of her Forbidden Series and then see what else she has written.

First read by this author, lukewarm.
Bold moments but none moved me. Although h/h thought great things about the other, honorable, brave, blah blah, I didn’t actually see it in the characters themselves. The author did not do a good job communicating all these wonderful qualities unless someone actually said it. Word by word it should have been exciting but it wasn’t.

Review originally published on Straight Shootin' Book Reviews.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a Medieval romance blurb that caught my attention. When I read the blurb for Forbidden Legacy, though, my interest was really, really peaked. Knights Templar? Say what?

Forbidden Legacy is the story of Katherine and Stephan. They have no desire to wed each other, but the Scottish king, Robert Bruce, requires them to wed in an effort to solve both their problems. Katherine wishes to reclaim her home, Avalon Castle, and Stephan needs a place to hide Knights Templar valuables. In an odd twist, Stephan once also lived at Avalon Castle before Katherine’s father killed his family years ago. Thus starts their tempestuous marriage and Forbidden Legacy.

Romances that begin with an arranged marriage between two unwilling, or slightly unwilling, parties always makes for an engaging storyline. In Forbidden Legacy, the story was even more interesting since these two wanted nothing to do with each other. Even better, Katherine and Stephan were unwilling to consummate their marriage! Seriously, add that all together and you are off running for a good time. Now Stephan and Katherine both have deep-seated reasons for keeping their distance; not only do they know nothing of their spouse but they also have good reasons to avoid intimacy. Stephan is celibate due to being in the Knights Templar and Katherine was attacked when she was younger. Overcoming their fears and empathizing with one another takes a majority of the book. However, when they finally give in to their desires and admit their love for each other it’s really very sweet and emotional (oh the waterworks certainly made an appearance).

You can tell this book is meticulously researched from the moment you step into Cosby’s world. From the description of each character’s clothing to the setting to information about their sea travel, this book is brimming with little, historically accurate, details. At a few points in the book, I felt like the historical details were center stage, rather than the romance, but the last few chapters of the book really pulled through highlighting Katherine and Stephan. I sincerely applaud Cosby’s ability to pull me out of my everyday life and plop me down in Medieval Scotland.

Even with the arranged marriage trope and the meticulous details, I felt like something was missing from this book, though. Katherine and Stephan were likable enough, but I didn’t really feel immersed in their journey. I honestly wasn’t sure I liked them for a big part of the book since I was focused on Cosby’s wondrous world building. More wooing, a softer side of each character and a bit more emotional intimacy would have been nice.

All in all, Forbidden Legacy was incredibly interesting. The Knights Templar aspect alone is unique enough that historical fans should pick up this book ASAP. I’m not even a huge historical fan and I had fun reading this one. Although I felt like Katherine and Stephan were a little two dimensional, I wouldn’t hesitate to read Cosby’s backlist to explore new worlds in thorough detail.

Forbidden Legacy is a very different kind of Scottish historical romance. Despite the sexy Highlander cover, the book feels more like a medieval adventure rather than a traditional Scot love story.

English soldiers have murdered Lady Katherine Calbraith’s parents and invaded their home, Avalon Castle. Katherine manages to launch a daring escape from imprisonment and pleads with Scotland’s king, Robert the Bruce, for help. The Bruce agrees to help her retake the castle but only if she agrees to marry Sir Stephan MacQuistan. Katherine is not interested in marriage to anyone but acquiesces to save her home.

Sir Stephan is one of the Knights Templar. Recently disbanded and on the run, Stephan and his small band of knights are searching for a safe stronghold to store their precious goods and protect their legacy. In a strange twist, Sir Stephan’s family once ruled Avalon and unbeknownst to Lady Katherine, were brutally murdered when her father stormed the castle. Now, in order to reclaim his birthright he must marry his enemy’s daughter, but he is determined not to fall in love.

Forbidden Legacy is a departure for Diana Crosby. I read and really liked her MacGruder series, which are your more traditional highland love stories. I was a little surprised to find that this is really more of a story about knights and castles than lairds and clans. That said, I mostly enjoyed the book.

The Knights Templar is a fascinating backdrop for a book series and not a subject that I was very familiar with. I found myself doing separate research to understand Stephan and his band of religious knights and it was fun and educational. Crosby has used the real events of 1307 to weave a convincing storyline about a group of Knights Templar who have escaped France and are searching for sanctuary in Scotland.

Using their fleet of ships, Stephan, with Katherine at his side, launches a campaign to retake Avalon Castle. Their love story takes a little bit of a backseat to the adventure tale of battles and intrigue. Much of the book takes place on one of Stephan’s ships which I grew tired of after a while. I just wanted the battle portion of the book to end so the love story could move forward.

Katherine is an attractive heroine. She’s contrary, independent, and strong. Perhaps a little too strong at times, while I know that some women were trained in sword fighting, it seems unlikely that Katherine could easily have picked up a knight’s sword to spar with. However, I mostly enjoyed her overall and she is more reasonable than Stephan.

Stephan’s refusal to even befriend his wife in the first half of the book was frustrating. He is supposed to be a strategist and leader but can’t understand that having Katherine on his side would be a benefit? It seems hard to believe and I felt at times that poor Katherine was repeating herself constantly trying to get him to cooperate. Once Stephan gets his act together he is so lovely and romantic, I just wish he had arrived at that point earlier in the story.

Overall Forbidden Legacy is a fun adventure story with a romance on the side. If you like medieval tales you will love it.

As we all know, everyone has baggage these days, and it is the same with Sir Stephan MacQuistan and Lady Katherine Calbraith.
Sir Stephan longed for his forbidden legacy, his birthright, Avalon Castle, and the title of Earl of Dunsmore. His family was murdered and his castle taken when he was but a young child. Fortunately, after his escape from the devastation of his family and their holding, Stephan was rescued & raised by some Knights Templar. As the story opens, Sir Stephan has just delivered a missive to Robert the Bruce, Scotland’s Sovereign, concerning the betrayal by King Philip of France. King Philip was desperate for some much needed wealth, and was willing to betray the very the Knight’s Templar who had aided him in the past. He organized a plot to arrest, murder and completely destroy the Knight’s Templar and their reputation in order to confiscate their great wealth.

One of my favorite descriptive scenes in the book is “Tears gathered behind her lashes. Furious, she glanced toward the hearth. Whispers of blue flame danced into slivers of red, then orange, and as fast became lost in a curl of smoke to disappear up the chimney."“Tell me what happened.” His compassion fractured her composure.” I do love Ms. Cosby’s attention to detail! It really is an added bonus and helps the reader be able to better picture the scene. Reading her novels are like watching a movie in my head. I admit, I’ll miss these characters.

I don’t wish to give the entire story away, as there are many twists and turns that seem to crop up in Stephan and Katherine’s relationship that hold ones attention until the end. Admittedly, Diana Cosby has always written her characters with such detail to personality and character. The lead male and female characters have depth, as well as, an often unexpected sizzling chemistry, whether her characters themselves realize it or not. Lady Katherine and Sir Stephan’s characters are written with so much warmth and detail that I didn’t want the story to end.

Another important aspect of this book that I like, is how she maintained the respect and place of honor, the Knight’s Templar have held throughout history…. regardless of the deceit and perfidy of King Philip.

One BIG REQUEST I have is that her books be made into audio books. Their are several really good narrators/story tellers out their with super sexy accents and proper brogue that would really make her wonderful characters come to life. I adore audio books and almost always buy the ebook as well as the audio book. I’m not sure why Ms. Cosby’s publishers or whomever makes that decision, hasn’t already done it with her other two captivating series. PLEASE, bring her work to audio! It’s just too good and too popular for everyone to miss out on the audible experience.

I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

The English have taken Katherine's home, killing her parents. The English commander has plans on marrying Katherine so it is all legally his. He doesn't know about the secret doorways, which Katherine uses to escape. She goes to her Godfather, Robert the Bruce.

Stephen has plans on getting back his home, the one taken when he was a child. He lost his parents and sister at that time, leaving him alone in the world. He was taken in by the Knights Templar and raised by them. He became a Templar but then the Templar's were disbanded after a greedy French noble slandered them and endangering their lives. His goal, as is his men's is to keep the Templar treasures safe. Along with regaining his old home, it will also hide his treasures.

Robert the Bruce has an idea. He has asked Katherine and Stephen to marry. After this marriage, Stephen may go after the land that was taken from his family, by Katherine's father. They marry, both very angry about it. Katherine refuses to stay behind when he goes after the Englishmen and she is allowed to go because only she knows where the secret entrances are. This is the only way they can gain access safely.

Will they succeed? Will love come to them? Will they learn each others secrets? Will they survive those secrets?

Katherine is very unlike women of that time as she is very vocal. Stephen, dedicating himself to God for most of his life is frustrated by her. As they travel, she is frustrated by Stephen because he will not tell her any of his past life. She does start to see the humble man he is, how he is protective of his men and how he would give his life for any of them. They are starting to feel very attracted to one another but her secret makes her push him away and of course he sees this rejection as her not wanting any part of him.

They will never truly be able to love until all the truths come out.

I debated on a rating for this story. The beginning was a bit slow for me but it really did pick up nicely. I felt like some of the writing was rushed, like not enough detail was given to it to explain certain things. Rushed, like steps being left out.

I did like Katherine and Stephen though and I enjoyed their journey toward each other. There were a couple of twists to the story that was done well, just another possible hitch to their happiness.

I would like to read more about this group of men, I just hope the writing is a bit more detailed.

This is a classic example of a book that tries to do too much. It is something that comes up often in romance books and is a pet peeve of mine.

I had high hopes for this in the beginning. It starts as a story of a woman who has lost her home and family having to marry a former Templar knight in order to take her heritage back. This story of two people who are forces together against their wishes really appealed to me. It should have stopped there, it didn't. Instead the pasts of the two come into play, there is rape, betrayal, lies, sins of family members LONG dead and the endless back and forward of these characters who love each other but endlessly push each other away. It was too much and it took away from what should have been the heart of the story.

A sweet romance between a woman who wished to marry for love and had the choice taken from her and a knight promised never to love a woman or take a wife but unable to stop himself. I wanted to see his struggle with his promise never to take a woman, wanted to see how this shaped his faith and if it made him question it at all. None of this happened which I found odd and sad because it would have made this book tonnes better.

The layering upon layering of drama is prevalent in the romance genre and I wish authors would just stop. A romance is complicated enough without endlessly throwing obstacles in the way.

The history in this book is dicey but not ridiculous. Templar knights in Scotland have a shadowy past. Probably more myth than truth. Rumors have long circulated that the Templars fought at the battle of Bannockburn but this has never been confirmed and most historians tend to believe that this rumour is false. I guess unless someone unearths an unknown medieval document this will always remain a mystery. The chances of Robert the Bruce himself being a Templar is even less likely but it is an interesting take on Scotland's history.

The history nerd in me also couldn't help but notice the repeated use of the word 'Sassenach' which was first used in the 18th century so hundreds of years after the time period in this book. I am probably the only person that would notice this at all or care about it so I do not hold it against the book. Despite this the historic setting was my favourite part of the book.

Characters were ok and the writing was good but the overwhelming barrage of drama left me cold and in the end I didn't enjoy this book as much as I wanted too.

This is the first book in the new Forbidden series, I thought it was a good start. I'm sorry to say, I wanted to like the book more than I did. The premise of the book is interesting and the writing well done. I had a hard time buying into the romance between the lead characters.

Avalon Castle has been breeched, leading to the English murdering Katherine's family. She is given the choice of marrying and Englishman to retain her family home, but she refuses. Katherine manages to escape and runs the King of Scotland, who happens to be her godfather. Enter Stephan,a Templar Knight who needs a secure place to store treasures for the Templar Knight's. Stephan also believes Avalon Castle is his birthright - Katherine's father murdered his family when he was a young child. The King decides Stephan and Katherine will wed, solving both of their problems. Neither of them want to marry the other but they see the marraige as a means to an end.

I found the story about the Knight's Templar disbanding very interesting. I thought the author handled the story well. The author is also very descriptive in her writing, I could easily picture the setting in my mind. The backstories of the main characters were well done, I just had a hard time connecting to Katherine, I found her to be very unlikable. There was something about Katherine I found off=putting. I found her to be brash, entitled and cold, there was no warmth to her character. I did like Stephan, I found him easier to connect with. I thought the author did a nice job of conveying the difficulties Stephan faced transitioning from a Templar Knight to a husband. I may have had a few issues with this book but it had not deterred me from wanting to read more from this author.

**I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I thought Katherine was a bit bratty, but I still enjoyed the book. Katherine's pigheaded disregard for dangerous situations put Stephan in danger as well as putting the mission of re-taking the castle in danger. Overall, I didn't care much for her. Stephan could be a bit of a stick at times as well. Both had issues to deal with and I think they muddled through it pretty well.

I thought that the author dealt with the disbanding of the Knights Templar very well. I also think she handled Stephan's transition from a Knight Templar (monk) to a husband excellently.

The book has some of everything -- passion and danger certainly, but rich historical information that I really enjoyed.

I'll try to give you a bit of the gist of the story without spoiling it for you. Katherine's family has been killed and their castle taken by the English. They try to force her to marry the Englishman who took the castle, but she manages to escape and flees to King Robert the Bruce. At about that same time, The Knights Templar have been disbanded and a fleet of boats bearing their treasure arrive at the court of King Robert the Bruce - for him to provide a place to store the treasure. (Robert the Bruce was a Knight Templar at some point). Robert requires Katherine and Stephan to marry and sends them off to re-take the castle.

They endure dangerous storms and shipwreck, dangerous battles to re-take the castle, intrigue and many, many secrets on their way to finding their happily-ever-after! They are both hiding secrets -- only to learn that those secrets aren't exactly what they thought they were.

This is Diana Cosby' s first book in her new Forbidden series, and what a great first it is. It had lots of action, pathos, and kept me guessing what would happen next. Taking place during the time when the Knight Templars were disbanded and were being persecuted by King Phillip of France. It was a very sad and dark time for the Templars, many were murdered by a monarch wanting their treasure. However, many did escape, some to Scotland in ships holding some of the Templar riches. One of these is the hero of this story, Sir Stephan MacQuistan. His charge is to report to King Robert Bruce and secure a safe stronghold to store the treasure. Things do not quite go as wanted with the King and Stephan ends up with an unwanted wife. Katherine of Avalon has just seen her family murdered by the English, who have taken over the castle. Unknown to her, this is her new husband's childhood home where he also witnessed his family's murder...by Katherine' s father. Will they be able to overcome all the obstacles and find happiness in their marriage? Reading this book to find out is well worth the time. It is a highly enjoyable book, loaded with some surprises along the way. There is an excerpt from the next book at the end. Thomas was one of my favorite characters from this book, so glad he is getting a chance to meet his own stubborn woman.

Well, just let me say this...I really was not partial to this read. Don't get me wrong, I like Ms Cosby's writing but this one would not be on my keeper shelf.
The main characters were Lady Katherine Calbraith and Sir Stephan MacQuistan. Her family was murdered at Avalon Castle in front of her eyes. She hates the English who destroyed the only life she knew. Katherine was not hanging around to see what the English had in store for her. So she takes off to see her Godfather Robert the Bruce. She is a woman to be reckon with, being independent and feisty to boot. Her Godfather wants her to be protected and the only way is in marriage.
Sir Stephan MacQuistan is a supporter of the Bruce and will do anything to help him in the matter of the Knights Templar. The Bruce has secrets of his own, and states to his ally Stephen that he must marry his ward Katharine. They both do not want this marriage and let's it be known that they will not do it. But when the Bruce orders them both to marry, let the games begin.
Katharine and Stephan are constantly at odds but their attraction grows on the way back to Avalon Castle.
I feel that more attention to the romance would make a better story, but that's just me.
I appreciate Net Galley for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.
