Creative powerhouse Geoff Johns puts the ring on again as he, co-writer Sam Humphries and artist Ethan Van Sciver debut a new era of emerald greatness! Rookie Green Lanterns Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz tackle the universe's toughest beat: Earth.
HOT TICKET: Geoff and Ethan brought Hal Jordan to epic status with the original GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH in 2004!
Geoff Johns originally hails from Detroit, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University, where he earned a degree in Media Arts and Film. He moved to Los Angeles in the late 1990s in search of work within the film industry. Through perseverance, Geoff ended up as the assistant to Richard Donner, working on Conspiracy Theory and Lethal Weapon 4. During that time, he also began his comics career writing Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. and JSA (co-written with David S. Goyer) for DC Comics. He worked with Richard Donner for four years, leaving the company to pursue writing full-time.
His first comics assignments led to a critically acclaimed five-year run on the The Flash. Since then, he has quickly become one of the most popular and prolific comics writers today, working on such titles including a highly successful re-imagining of Green Lantern, Action Comics (co-written with Richard Donner), Teen Titans, Justice Society of America, Infinite Crisis and the experimental breakout hit series 52 for DC with Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka and Mark Waid. Geoff received the Wizard Fan Award for Breakout Talent of 2002 and Writer of the Year for 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 as well as the CBG Writer of the Year 2003 thru 2005, 2007 and CBG Best Comic Book Series for JSA 2001 thru 2005. Geoff also developed BLADE: THE SERIES with David S. Goyer, as well as penned the acclaimed “Legion” episode of SMALLVILLE. He also served as staff writer for the fourth season of ROBOT CHICKEN.
Geoff recently became a New York Times Bestselling author with the graphic novel Superman: Brainiac with art by Gary Frank.
Not bad. Again, there's not much of anything Rebirth related (or not enough to justify the prices, in my opinion), but it's a decent buddy cop story.
Jessica and Simon are both GL's from Earth, and not fond of each other. Apparently, all the other GL's are busy doing (I'm assuming) Rebirthy stuff, so Hal shows up and knocks their stubborn heads (and power batteries) together.
Now they're stuck together! Let the fun begin!
You also get a glimpse of something happening somewhere:
But it wasn't quite enough to stoke my fire for this particular title. I think I'm gonna go check out the other Green Lantern titles...
(I read this as a physical single issue, but I'm not able to find that edition on GR, so I'm just going to use this one).
This was probably my favorite of this week's Rebirth one-shots. I've never read anything Lantern-related, but I like the concept of the emotional spectrum, and seeing as how this issue was really, really interesting, I think this title may be one of the better ones.
Chills, am I right? Two new Green Lanterns have been chosen and we have a peek at the Justice League again. Of course, Barry is saluting the two new recruits ahhhhh :'). Red Lantern corps are here too so Appa, yip yip.
Okay, this is actually a review for this entire series, but this is the only one I could find on Goodreads. Why hasn’t anyone else read these? These are amazing and the characters are adorable and super relatable and I need about 20 more issues of Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. To quote Jessica: “I believe in the healing power of pancakes.” I don’t know, this series is wonderful, please go read it.
I'm a lover of all things dealing with Hal Jordan, but I've never been too fond of the other human Lantern Corps members. I've only made it into the New 52 Green Lantern series far enough to read the first volume that contains Simon Baz. I'm not in love with that character, but I already like him better that Kyle Raynor and John Stewart. I know the female GL, Jessica Cruz, comes in sometime towards the end of New 52, but this book is my introduction to the character. I've yet to see enough of her to form an opinion of her as a character. This book shows both Baz and Cruz dealing with their civilian lives when they each receive a call on their Lantern ring to report to the moon. Hal Jordan sent out the message and ends up telling the two that they will have to partner up because they are both so new to the game. He then proceeds to make it so that they have no choice, but to team up. Towards the end of the book, we get a glimpse of Red Lanterns Atrocitus, Bleez, and Dex-starr setting them up to be the main villains of this first arc if not the entire series.
I'm a huge Geoff Johns fan and I'm glad to see him helping steer the direction that the series initially heads in. Johns has a co-writer with him, but I can't remember what that guy's name is. I was pleased overall with the story of this issue and look forward to seeing what the Red Lanterns have in store for these 2 rookie Green Lanterns. Story gets 5 stars.
The art in this series is provided by Ethan van Sciver. If you've ever seen his art in the earlier GL books, that should be enough to make you want to pick up this series. I love his art. As long as the writers can keep me semi-interested in the two new GL's, I'll keep picking up the books because the art is that damn good. Art 5 stars.
Overall 5 star book. I know this is only 1 issue, but I'm loving how the series is starting off. I usually review just the collected trades, but I enjoyed this enough to want to go ahead and get a review out there. Only time will tell if the series remains this good. If you're even remotely interested in any of the Green Lanterns, pick this up.
This is going to be a terrific relaunch and changing of the status quo for the Green Lanterns. Having Jessica Cruz in her own book is a dream come true, and I finally have the opportunity to enjoy the formation of her character. I was never really a big fan of Simon Baz...that being said, it will be interesting to see the development of these two ring bearers in their ongoing title. This book should easily become a favorite of mine, and I hope with the inclusion of the Red Lanterns on the final pages, the writers choose to re-introduce the ring slingers from the other Corps. Like-Where is Carol Ferris and the Sapphires?
All in all, a great book to start Rebirth, and I cannot wait to see Jessica in future issues. ❤️
This book is just beautifully illustrated. Green Lanterns are really hit or miss with me. However, I think that I am going to enjoy this series. I like the two new recruits and the fact that they will have to work together to be a better team and better individuals in the long wrong. I am really curious about this mysterious ring that was mentioned in the first few pages and why the Red Lanterns want it. Where the hell is Hal Jordan running off to by the way? Guess we'll find out.

It has been a few years since DC turned me off on comics so I am approaching this new Rebirth with an open, but skeptical mind. The Green Lanterns book looks interesting. I'm interested to see where it will go. Of course it is great to see Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver together again.
First time I've ever read any Green Lantern and I have to say I really like it. I think the premise of the light powers is really interesting. I really like the female Green Lantern and it is fun to have two different Green Lanterns. I can definitely see them not getting along in the future. Good start to a new volume of Green Lanterns and I think I'm going to follow this one.
Despite this being about the two newest additions to the Green Lantern Corps, the duo is a fine contrast of another and has been set-up well to add to their growing pains as lanterns. With Red Dawn on the horizon, this series is looking bright so far.
So glad to see Geoff Johns' back on the Lantern books! Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz haven't gotten a lot of time in the spotlight until now! This looks to be a great start for DC and the Lanterns! I am optimistic for the future and I plan to read the next issue!
My favourite Rebirth one-shot this week. Green Lanterns is a great jumping on point that introduces two characters in such a way that I'm looking forward to being invested in them. I thought the cameo and the set-up for future issues was very well crafted.
The art really stood out to me most, particularly the Hal Jordan splash page. It promises an alright story, at least. I will probably keep up with this series to see where it goes.
Read the entire series as i bought this as a bundle.
This series is bad, i absolutely hate these main characters so so sooooo much. They are incredibly annoying and their internal conflicts come off as annoying.
The main female character has anxiety disorders and every single chance she gets, she will remind the reader about it and always having these dumb conversations with herself about it. Constantly she will pity herself over her anxiety and explain in way too much detail in every single situation she is in on how it impacts her and why she sucks. Its dumb dumb dumb and makes for a annoying read.
She makes this comic series agonizing to read. Im sick and tired of hearing about her anxiety every other page. The male main character is constantly having to make up for her too and has his own problems with work/family balance which he will also talk about constantly.
These main characters are one note, they have one internal conflict and will stick to it and still talk about it 57 comic books later in the series.
I was so over it after the first 30 times reading about it, 230 times reading about her anxiety and his family balancing issues that somehow mix into every story line, im over it. I hate hate hated this comic and definitely feel like i wasted my money buying this.
Get this main character some xanax, seriously, why is she this much into her anxiety issues and never thought to seek out basic modern day medicine like medication or therapy. Jeez. Worst green lantern ever.
Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz are the Green Lanterns of Earth. But their both rookies and have personalities as opposite as can be. Hal Jordan has made them partners and turned their training over to the Justice League. Now they just have to work out their differences in time to deal with an attack by old enemies of the Green Lantern Corps!
As starting points go, this one was very strong. New readers get a quick glimpse into the characters current situations and a bit of their personalities, and old readers get some references to previous continuity to catch them up to where Simon and Jessica are now. The initial storylines get set up here as well, causing some drama and dread for all readers. Personally, I’m excited to see how these rookies will deal with a very real threat. I admit there are a lot of stereotypical male/female dynamics going on here, but this is just a place to start, so I’m willing to concede some of that. I hope to see development beyond that.
Van Sciver has been one of my favorite Green Lantern artists of all time, so seeing his work here gives me a very comfortable and familiar feeling that really sets me up for enjoying this ongoing series. He really differentiates the characters along the lines of power and finesse that fits them so well. In a lot of ways, this team-up reminds me of Hawk and Dove (and not just due to gender lines), and that will serve as a great playground for Van Sciver’s visuals.
Strong start to this series. Can’t wait to see more.
2.5 This issue felt light-weight and, dare I say, more like a recent Marvel issue than the rest of the Rebirth crop.
We’ve got a pair of very human heroes who are both new to the Green Lantern mantle, both with their own personal dramas at play. Of course, they couldn’t be any more different – they can’t stop sniping at each other when they’re both summoned to defeat a common enemy.
DC needs a few books like this in its lineup, and having one of them be Green Lanterns frees fans from needing to know the massive multi-year epic feeding Hal Jordan’s plot, but altogether this was a just alright.
So instead of being an actual comic where things... you know, happen, this is primarily about these two new Green Lanterns being recruited and needing to learn to be responsible or whatever........... yay. Like I get it, it's meant to be a preview to this one series of Green Lantern comics, but come on, you couldn't have at least included more action in here to make this more exciting to read? Or at least, action from a foe that was actually real? Also, why are these two arguing about who gets to be the Green Lantern in the first place? Like, who cares? Shut the FUCK up and go smash Sinestro in his face already, for the sake of everyone involved.
I wasn't familiar with these new Lanterns but their characters do seem to have some interesting points. Red Lanterns were also new to me and I have to say the concept felt a bit weird. What's with all the blood coming out of their mouth? Maybe I should do some reading up on them... Anyway I would read a vol.2, if it would also be on K... Unlimited...
This was AWESOME! Man, Green Lanterns are cool. I can't wait to read Hal's one shot when I get to it. As far as character introductions go, this was pretty effective. Seems like both our lanterns are on the newer side of the spectrum, so I'm interested to see them learn to cooperate with one another!
