Dante Alighieri #2

The Third Heaven Conspiracy

Rate this book
Italy, June 1300. In a disused church on the outskirts of Florence, the master craftsman, Ambrogio, is found murdered at the foot of an unfinished mosaic.

A young Dante Alighieri, (future author of The Divine Comedy) the recently elected Prior to the City of Florence, is called upon to investigate. He learns that the church is being transformed into a university at the behest of the new Pope, Bonifacius VIII. Closer inspection reveals catacombs beneath the floor, populated with beggars and thieves, who speak of witchcraft and satanic rituals practised above. Meanwhile, the Church, on learning of Dante's involvement, begins to show an unusual interest in Ambrogio's fate.

But Dante has one further lead; Ambrogio belonged to a society of learned men, The Third Heaven. Dante hears they are in Florence for the founding of the new university, and believes that if he can infiltrate this group he may uncover the significance of Ambrogio's work. Perhaps the key to the murder is the mosaic itself.

Leoni sets this clever thriller in a city on edge, nervously recovering from civil war. Medieval Florence is portrayed with stunning clarity; a city on the cusp of the Renaissance, in which new learning - in the guise of Dante - takes on the dark forces of old. The Third Heaven Conspiracy is a breathtaking whodunnit.

Odličan istorijski roman... Do prevoda naslova došli smo ispijajući kafu i ćaskajući s autorom i njegovim prvim prevodiocem u jednom rimskom kafeu davne 2005.

When I read about this book, which casts Dante (yes, that Dante - author of the Divine Comedy) as the prior of the city of Florence, and therefore responsible to solve the highly unusual murder of a mosaic artisan in a church, I thought it sounded interesting and clever.

Unfortunately, I found the book painfully dull. The character of Dante is portrayed as a self-important, but at the same time fearful and mean-spirited person. He is not at all likeable, in fact I could see why other characters in the book would not help him to solve the murder.

The other characters, most of whom are also scholars, and also potential suspects in the murder, are equally dull.

The entire book really dragged for me, and I had to force myself to keep reading. Perhaps the issue is that the book was translated from Italian and the plot points lost something in translation, but the characters and the story were so boring that I just didn't care who committed the murder or why.

The book didn't live up to the potential it could have at all

Labai patiko.

The is a historical novel. It is based in Florence, Italy, in 1300 and the story occurs over one week (6/15 - 6/22). It is the time just before the clash between the Whites (who had misgivings about Pope Boniface VIII and his court) and the Blacks (extremists who supported the papacy) - two factions of the Guelphs.

Dante Alighieri was born in Florence into the Guelph family (middle class supporters of the papacy). Although Dante was a devout Catholic and held many of the principles of his family's party (Guelph) dear, he distrusted Boniface. In 1300, Dante became an elected member of the Council of Florence (a prior) and used his authority to oppose a papal grab for power.

That is the setting for the story which centers around a couple of murders. Dante investigates the murder and finds that Templars are involved and, in the process, learns that the Americas (land beyond the ocean of great riches) has been discovered.

The story bogs down a bit when trying to explain the theories of thought that existed back then. And, for me, the prologue never really ties into the story nor helps to explain any of the background. But, the overall story of solving the murder does hang together, even if it gets a bit lost at times.

The note and glossary at the end of the book should be read first in order to have knowledge of the times if the reader is as unfamiliar with the setting as I was. Both help to establish an understanding of what is going on and who the characters are.

This book was strange. I felt like perhaps the translation from the Italian might have been a little off, as in parts the book is written quite simply and in other parts it contains the most convoluted sentences peppered with unnecessarily complicated words.

I was also bewildered by the fact that the character of Dante is weirdly aggressive and extremely unlikeable — this made it too hard to finish the book; he has a weird penchant for hitting guards and kicking beggars. It's really bizarre. Since I couldn't relate to the protagonist at all, it was too hard to finish this book.

The point at which Leoni completely lost me was with the introduction of the customary exotic 'beauty from the east' who dances before the characters in a tavern, completely mesmerising everyone with the vision of the 'soft down' visible through her clothes, revealing the 'arc of her pudenda'. Please. I can not be bothered dealing with another story of some 'genius' protagonist whose powers of reason are clouded by the presence of some peskily distracting sexy lass. BORING.

Mosaiikkimurha vaikuttaa aluksi hurmaavalta aikamatkalta 1300-luvun italiaan. Karu totuus paljastuu kuitenkin jo alkulehdillä. Keskiaikaisen elämän kuvaus on niukkaa, vaikka nimenomaan tämäntyyppisissä romaaneissa sillä on tärkeä asema.

This is a good book if you're just looking for an uncompromising historical investigation story.
The mystery behind the murder case is able to keep you reading the book till the end and the good thing is that you're able somehow to discover some aspects of Dante's life. The book has some historical problems ( but that's common since it's literature and not an academic book ) but in general the hole scenario is quite good.
Perhaps, not one of the best historical books ever, like Umberto Eco or Bernard Cornwell, but, anyway, it's a nice book.

This book had all the ingredients to make for one amazing reading experience, but the execution felt flat and frustrating.

The setting in medieval Florence is naturally incredibly interesting but it was so poorly presented that it’s not that distinguishable from any other historical European city.

The main character was portrayed as a spoiled belittling intellectual that likes to slap people in the face. And I thought there was no way I could dislike the guy that wrote some of the most beautiful verses of all time. Nonetheless, in an unexpected plot twist, most of the others characters were so under developed I kept forgetting who was who.

Although the story spanned over 380 pages, it felt rushed and the development of the narrative arch a bit lazy.

I’m giving it two stars for the book that it could have been.

A Dante Alighieri mystery is something new for me, written by Giulio Leoni, in translation from Italian to English. The story is based on the life of Dante, born in Florence in the late 13th century and revolves around the power struggle between the Pope in Rome and the people of Florence, who have designated Dante as a priori, one of their five leaders. In the course of solving one murder, Dante is seduced by exotic possibilities, led to another murder and more Italians at war with each other.

1291, Florence, Dante is called as Prior to witness the scene of a death. The mosaic master has died in suspicious circumstances and our protagonist is determined to find out more. He discovers a meeting of minds at an inn where the aim is to create a university, at the same venue a dancer who is entrancing performs. The number 5 is prominent, not only in the pentagram image.
Entriguing, commanding read.

This was an interesting concept for a mystery, featuring the poet Dante solving murders in 14th century Florence. Dante is portrayed as being pompous, irritable, easily distracted, and thin-skinned, and he was constantly yelling at people. Unfortunately the story was hampered by a confusing cast of characters, obscure politics, and clunky writing (which could have been due to translation issues). Not bad, but not great.

I thought I would enjoy this but I have not. There's very little investigating of the murder happening. Dante Alighieri stomps around Florence in a rage a great deal and there is one scene between him and a church figure that is well worth reading.
Still, the mystery has failed to capture my attention so I am moving on to a different book.
