Hail Mary

Rate this book
A funny, naughty, dirty *standalone* sports romance...

At a boxing gym in Chicago, Mary Monahan accidentally knocks out the most handsome man she’s ever met. After she wakes him up with a few slaps and some smelling salts, the very first thing he does is ask her out for ribs and beer. His name is Jimmy. He looks like a Gillette model. And he’s just too hunky to resist.

Jimmy “The Falcon” Falconi is mystified that Mary has absolutely no idea who he is. Mystified and refreshed. He is, after all, not your everyday NFL quarterback. He shops at Costco, has a soft spot for Pinterest, and is in the midst of an epic losing streak.

Jimmy falls for Mary fast and hard, the way he does everything—balls out and like it’s fourth and long. And he realizes he’s finally met his match. That stamina he’s so proud of? Doesn’t stand a chance against her Kegels.

But what they don’t know is she’s also his new physical therapist, recently hired by the Bears to work on his rotator cuff…and groin injury. If she can’t help him, he’ll be traded faster than they can say “offensive penetration.”

In spite of the thousands of internet memes featuring Jimmy’s face with captions like: “HEY GIRL, WANT TO TOUCH MY BALLS?” Mary finds herself falling for him and his unrelenting desire to make her his.

Until a toddler shows up at Jimmy’s door.

And throws their lives into total chaos.

***

To the reader: Sweet. Safe. HEA. This is a comedy that gets very dirty, so be advised. Other tasters' notes: Hints of honey and champagne. And a feisty little dog named Frankie Knuckles.

Hail Mary is a stand-alone sports romance by Nicola Rendell. This book has been out for awhile now and I don’t know what took me so long to finally read it. First of all, I loved the cover. But even more than that, I loved the characters. Just wait until you meet Jimmy “The Falcon” Falconi and the woman that rocked his world, Mary Monahan.

football player:

Jimmy is the quarterback for the Chicago Bears. But things haven’t been going very well lately. His game is off and he’s on an epic losing streak. If he can’t get it together and soon, he’ll be traded. It’s when Jimmy is recreationally sparring in a small local gym that he is literally knocked down by Mary Monahan. At first all he could see were her eyes. But they were eyes worth noticing. Mary surprised him in every way, especially when she laid him out flat on his back. His world will never be the same again.

female boxer:

Mary is a physical therapist but boxes recreationally. After her boxing partner is revived, he asks her to dinner. She can’t resist that sexy smile and all those…abs. Mary was most definitely not looking for a relationship. But Jimmy has charisma like crazy and he doesn’t take no for an answer. The next morning, though, Mary is supposed to report to the stadium for a new patient and there he is, Jimmy Falconi. She doesn’t follow football and didn’t even realize who he was. Now what do they do?

“I don’t sleep with patients.”
“Sleep? Who said anything about sleep?”

Things between these two progress really fast. Jimmy knows what he wants and that is Mary. Mary, though, is a little more apprehensive about jumping in so quickly.

“I’ve only known you what…One day?”
“Sure. But you know where you can go in a day? All the way to the moon.”

Mary does more than just straight physical therapy. She believes in a sort of mind, body connection. To find the root of the issue, both physically and mentally. And it doesn’t take long for her to figure out what Jimmy’s block is. The question is, can she help him to overcome it?

Jimmy’s life isn’t one you would think a wealthy football player leads. His life revolves around his three year old niece, and shopping at Costco. When life gets tough, and the stress level gets too high, what does Jimmy do to relax? He goes to Costco.

costco:

Unfortunately, as Mary comes to the full realization of how famous Jimmy really is, she is introduced to every detail of his life on Google. And it’s not pretty. Is this the life she wants for herself? How can she ever measure up to some of the women he has been photographed with?

“I used to wonder what it would feel like to be in zero gravity, what it would be like to be floating and weightless and a thousand miles above earth. Well. Now I know.”

L:

This story was just amazing. I loved it so much. Jimmy was head over heals for Mary but their road was not an easy one. I have so fallen in love with Nicola Rendell’s writing. It is sexy and sweet and her characters are always so wonderful and endearing. This book never let me go until the final page. And what an ending it was. I think I have pretty much decided that whatever this author writes, I will most definitely read it.

“Where have you been all my life?
“Waiting.”

Honey, sugar, champagne...oh fucking my! Nicola Rendell...where the HELL have you been all my life?! HAIL MARY was EPIC!

It seems like I've read a lot of sports romances this month, but HAIL MARY was one of the best. Lovable characters, hilarious and witty banter, intense passion. This had everything and more! At the time I read this, Nicola Rendell was a new author to me. I looked back and saw that this author was fairly new to the game, only releasing two other novels in the romance genre. I was incredibly surprised by this, because the writing was SO freaking GOOD! I wasn't expecting to like this so much, when in fact, I absolutely LOVED IT! In fact, the minute I finished HAIL MARY, I went on Amazon and purchased her other two books (Professed and Confessed) and I've since devoured one and LOVED that as well! So, I think it's safe to say that Ms. Rendell gained herself a HUGE fan and I can't wait to see what she brings to the table next.

Before I go, I NEED to talk about these two characters, Mary and Jimmy. I fell in LOVE with them instantly. They brought so much strength and heart to this story and that was only in Chapter One. The fed off of each other and the passion just grew from there. It was quick. It was heated. It was just EVERYTHING. I laughed. I cried. I swooned like I've never swooned before. I was intrigued from the very beginning and I couldn't put it down. Jimmy and Mary are two people who couldn't better suited for each other. The hilarity and the romance of it all just blew me away.

In conclusion, HAIL MARY is a sexy and hilarious sports romance that will give you tingles all the way through. It's the PERFECT read for romance fans and it was the PERFECT read for me. With every book I pick up by this author, the more I crave! I'm keeping my eye on Ms. Rendell, as should you. I know she will have GREAT things for us in the near future.

I read this during a time when I needed the funny, sweet goodness that the story promises with that blurb. It definitely delivered. From the get go Mary wasn't your typical heroine. She packed a punch. Literally. Jimmy was down to earth and simple despite being a sports celebrity. The story was written well with good pacing. The characters experienced growth and made a good pairing. I laughed out loud, was charmed by the exchanges of our mcs, and quite enjoyed the romance. More so than that, the plot touched on an emotional level in a way I wasn't expecting. The little girl in the story stole my heart. I genuinely enjoyed this read. Safety: Completely safe read except for neglect/endangerment of a child.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

Struggled to finish this one. Sort of insta love, sex on the first meeting, no condom. "I want your babies". She doesn't recognise him. Now, I am Irish, but I sort of know the big shots in the sports world, even in America, but she did not recognise him. She should have. especially as she is involved in sports therapy. Maybe I am nit-picking but I need a bit more substance in my books. Too much sex ... yes, I just said that. It's not that they were too young. She was 30, I think.

A bit too sweet and sugary.

Skimmed to the end. I know, I know, I am getting terribly fussy with my reading. Even if a books is only 3 dollars, it's still 3 dollars that I could have spent on a book that I enjoyed. Ah, well, onwards and upwards. Back to Roarke, maybe. xx

The first 25% or so of this one was slow going for me. It was REALLY wordy (IMO) with long conversations that could have been shortened to move the plot along faster (the fight scene at the beginning, the rib restaurant scene, and the BFF dog convo are a few examples.) Things started to pick up a bit more after that and I got more involved in the plot.

Both characters were likable for the most past. Mary had a couple times where I wanted to throttle her and felt she acted a little immature for a thirty-year-old, but for the most part, she was an enjoyable heroine. Jimmy was sweet and sexy and VERY all in from the minute he meets Mary. There was also a nice collection of secondary characters added to the mix.

If you are looking for a insta-everything, low angst, easy peasy read with some smokin hot sex scenes (the champagne bottle was HOT, but seriously things like that are what land people in the ER with sex-related injuries) then look no further and add this one to your TO READ list today.

“I need you more than you can possibly understand. I need you with me. I want you with me. By my fucking side, in my bed, in my life. On the road. The plane. Not just to fuck. Not just to get dirty. But I need you to let me love you. I need you to let me unleash on you. I can’t be polite about it much longer.”

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much when I started this book. I’ve been going through the mother of all book slumps and have been struggling just to finish the stories I start, let alone actually be entertained by something I’m reading. And let’s face it, that cover boarders on cheesy on a good day.

Well, I’m glad I managed to right myself long enough to read Hail Mary because I loved it!

Jimmy “The Falcon” Falconi, current starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears, is in the middle of a game day slump/bad luck combo and if he doesn’t find a way to get his act together, he’ll soon find himself among the ranks of unemployed athletes. Sure, he’s had a decent career and at 34 could manage to retire with dignity, but family obligations have him wanting to ride the NFL train a little longer before giving it all up.

Mary Monahan is a straight up badass. She’s 157 lbs. of lean, mean fighting machine and she has the pictures on her gym’s knockout wall to prove it. When Jimmy finds himself going down hard after experiencing Mary’s fighting skills firsthand, its love at first sight.

No, really. Wham bam thank you ma’am, that’s my woman! Kind of love. Now to convince Mary she wants him just as badly.

Within five minutes of starting this book, I knew it was heading towards a 5 Star rating. I’ve read a ton of rom-com books lately and one thing has become abundantly clear; finding the right mix of sweet, sexy and funny is a serious art form. I don’t enjoy over the top silly but I still want to laugh. I want quality sexytimes without the cheese factor that often accompanies it. And it goes without saying I have to dig both main characters.

See! That’s a pretty tall order.

My first pleasant surprise was that Nicola Rendell can write the hell out of a light hearted romance. The character interactions left me with that goofy smile you get when you’re thoroughly enjoying what you’re reading and the folks around you give you a wide berth because you may have a touch of the cray cray going on. I absolutely adored all things Jimmy and Mary and while instalove can be a deal breaker for me, it totally worked here.

And then there’s Jimmy. Just…Jimmy.

Fuckers. I’ll show them. I will. But in the meantime, I need to calm the hell down. I need to find my Zen. I need to go to Costco.

Judge if you must, but a sexy quarterback with an eye towards frugality who also appreciates the righteous goodness a Costco trip can bring to your life? That’s the dream right there.

So why not 5 stars? The pacing of the last 25% of the story threw me just a little. Don’t get me wrong, the writing remained solid throughout, but I felt all of the problematic issues were wrapped up too easily for me to fully buy the overall HEA.

I'll also mention the character development is nothing to write home about, but I knew that going in and I wasn't looking for a particularly deep book. It worked for me.

Thank you, Ms. Rendell, for helping me out of the chasm that was my book slump. Fingers crossed Bridgett gets her story told as well.

I will never look at champagne, sugar and honey the same way again after this book! 😂🔥😋

📚 “𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁…𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆?”
“𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗲. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘆? 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗼𝗻.” 📚

Jimmy Falconi ("The Falcon") is the Chicago football team quarterback. Famous, rich and hot... But things haven’t been going well for him lately. His game is off, so the fans no longer believe in him and the coaches informed him that if he doesn't fix things soon, he will be traded. 😱🏈

Mary Monahan is a real bad-ass! 💪 Despite her tiny size, she is a hell of a fighter. As proof, she has pictures on the gym wall of all the men she knockout.

When Jimmy finds himself face down on the mat after a fist fight with this little woman - he falls in love. Mary doesn't recognize him, but Jimmy knows he has to have her, and things between them move fast... very fast! 😂

They immediately become a couple, after the first date, only to realize the next day that they will have to work with each other... because Mary turns out, is the physical therapist who needs to help him get back to the game. 😬

📚 “𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲. 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲.” 📚

Mary tries to stop the progress of their relationship in order to behave professionally with her new client - but Jimmy is determined to keep things the way they are. (I must point out that it wasn't very reliable that a sports therapist has never heard of Chicago's most famous football star, but... OK!)
Can love at first sight develop into more? Will Jimmy finds his way to get back to the game, thanks to Mary...? 🏈

📚 “𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱. 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼 𝗳𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗜 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂. 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗜’𝗺 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗜’𝗺 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹.” 📚

While I don't have a problem with Insta-Love, I'm not a big fan of *that kind of love* at first sight. So if you are looking for credibility or depth, there is non in this story... but if you want a light and cute read, this is just the book for you!
Even so, to my opinion, there were too many sex scenes that did not fit into the light comedy mode of the book. True- most of them were madly HOT (champagne, sugar and honey! 🔥😋), but... their quantity people...!!!

It's a sweet romantic book about a hot football star and a woman who works in sports but doesn't know her clientele at all.
It had lots of fun moments, passion and humor - and it came to me right on time after a heavy read, but ... I probably will forget all about it pretty quickly.

And ... there, I forgot. 😂😂😂

Stick a fork in me, I'm done! Hail Mary was a fabulous surprise with characters that won me over within the first couple of pages. That first chapter was fantastic and it was the perfect introduction to Jimmy and Mary. It was done with humor mixed with some great flirting and it didn't hurt that the attraction between the two of them was obvious and hot. I was sold. On the spot.

I connected with Mary and Jimmy immediately and I liked how approachable and relatable the both were. Yes, Jimmy used to be a playboy but who could blame him being the famous athlete that he was. Reaping the benefits but that slowly changed because of his cute little niece Annie who lacked the right care and nurturing from her father. That other side to Jimmy was heartwarming.
Mary was a strong, funny and a kickass heroine. She was so down to earth and easygoing. Her first encounter with Jimmy was memorable and funny as hell. No wonder he was swept off his feet. They were total opposites but how they found common ground and a relationship was the true story. Their chemistry was delicious and sizzling hot. Jimmy had a wonderful streak of being possessive and protective. He definitely made Mary let go of herself to Jimmy. Let me just say that a champagne and honey scene will forever be etched in my mind. So erotic and dirty. Nicola Rendell knows how to write sexy scenes. Every word hit me the right way.
The secondary characters like Bridget, Frankie Knuckles and Annie were terrific and also they wormed their way into my heart.

I enjoyed how their relationship progressed and what obstacles were thrown at them. It felt believable. The pace of the story was great and Nicola Rendell's prose was flawless. I'm a Rendell fan now and I'm definitely going to read her previous books.

Really liked this one, a sports romance with no in your face manwhore or ex drama, insta love that so totally worked because again, it wasn't in your face, adults who acted like adults and talked to each other, no real push and pull - thank god and ... Frankie Knuckles. Man oh man, that dog is the total shit, but then what dog that oozes character like Frankie isn't? ♥

This was heavy on love and romance and low on angst - a perfect feel-good read.

The only thing that let it down a little bit was the epilogue - I'm greedy and wanted more of them in the future, to see how Annie settled and to see babies!!! I need babies :D

4.25 stars Upped this to 5 stars after thinking about it, it was way better than my original lower rating.

“Don’t be scared. I have been waiting so f*cking long to meet someone who makes me feel exactly like I do with you. Like I’m safe, and loved, and needed. And like I’m not so alone after all.”

Wow, I think every piece of clothing on my body caught fire more than once while reading this crazy wonderful book. I admit, there’s always an added level of excitement that I feel from discovering a new author to me and falling in love with their every word for the very first time, but when I find myself quite literally entranced by their storytelling, falling hard and fast for their characters, the chemistry between them, their sense of humour, I want to shout it from the rooftops and make everyone feel as euphoric as I’ve felt while reading that book. Disguised as ‘just another’ steamy romantic comedy by a cover dripping with sexual innuendo, it took me just a few paragraphs to realise that this book was going to be so much more than its sultry packaging, and right from the start, the author surprised me with her confident, engaging prose that is romantic without being maudlin, witty without being silly, erotic and downright ‘dirrrty’ at times without being simply titillating or pandering to a set audience. A true gem in every possible way, this was an addictive, well-written, impassioned love story that I simply could not get enough of, making it one of my top reads of the year, and most decidedly, one of the best sports-themed romantic comedies I’ve ever read.

**5 You had me ROTFLMAO Stars**

Mary is a physical therapist with a special touch that helps people get out of their heads while in pain. And Mary doesn’t know a thing about football. Jimmy is an aging, failing quarterback who can’t get his game on while ON the field. But certainly can OFF the field. The two meet and sparks fly. Well, that is after the knock out. Throw in an awesome best friend, a crazy dog with a crazy name and an adorable little girl named Annie and you have the makings of one of the best rom-com’s I’ve ever read.

I absolutely adored this book! It was funny:
"Today she’s wearing a puffy short vest, so I can see every last inch of her perfect fucking legs. And that beautiful Y between them. Yoga pants, God bless them. Namaste, motherfuckers. Namaste." ~Jimmy

Mega hot…like burn up my iPad hot..
"I love being inside you, Mary Monahan. It’s that fucking simple, you know?”~Jimmy

And still beautifully romantic.
“[…] Mary spots me and gives me that big, perfect beautiful knockout smile. The smile she gave me when I woke up in the hospital. The smile she gave me from the sidelines as confetti fell from the ceiling of the Superdome. The smile she gives me every morning when she wakes up. The smile she gave me in the ring that day when my life changed forever with a single punch.”~Jimmy

Mary was a great heroine. There were a couple of times I wanted to shake her but she gets her head out of her ass and comes around. She was really good to Jimmy and helping him overcome his problems.

Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy…*sigh* what can I say…He was one of the most perfect heroes I’ve read. He knew right away Mary was the one for him and he wasn’t taking no for an answer. Even when Mary turned tail and ran, he immediately gave chase and wouldn’t let up. Oh, he gave her space and time she needed but he was determined she was his HEA. He was that possessive, dirty-talking alpha that I love.
“Remember when you gave in to me on the chair? Do it again. Because you’re all mine. All fucking mine.” He grips my shoulders from behind, pulling me down even further onto him. “You know you can play shy. You know you can tell me to step back, but I can’t. And I won’t. And I never will. Because you’re all fucking mine and that’s how it is.”~Jimmy
But he was also sweet and caring. And he shops at Costco…can’t beat that. I mean he had a gallon size bottle of Mr. Bubbles…

Everything worked for me…well Mary had a few moments where I wanted to strangle her but all in all it was a damn near perfect book IMO! AND Jimmy has nice *cough* balls...ON the cover guys!! Get your mind out of the gutter!

This book had a little bit of everything. There were definitely some laugh out loud moments. There were some super hot scenes *fans self*. I will never look at champagne and honey the same. There were some super sweet moments and there were some emotional moments. The ending was great but of course me being the epilogue whore that I am, I wanted more as this didn't really have an actual epilogue. It was all tied up nicely with a definite HEA though. I would really love to get Bridget's story. She is an awesome best friend and deserves her own HEA.

But I need you to let me love you I need you to let me unleash on you. I can’t be polite about it much longer.”

We’ve been on such a book high since finishing Hail Mary! This book made us feel so bloody happy as we lost ourselves completely to Jimmy and Mary’s story, easily declaring it to be our favourite sports romance of the year.

“You know you can tell me to step back, but I can’t. And I won’t. And I never will. Because you’re all fucking mine and that’s how it is.” ‘All fucking mine.’

Hail Mary encompassed everything we love in a good sport romance, and even convinced us of the insta love connection between Jimmy and Mary; something we often find difficult to feel and believe. Not so in this case. We felt the intense passion, we believed the unbreakable bond and we lived and breathed the love between these two from the outset.

“The earth will pivot on this. The sun will rise and set on this.”

All too often we find the ‘sports‘ element to be lacking in sports romance, and whilst we may not understand all the ins and outs of NFL, that doesn’t stop us wanting to soak up the ambiance of the event as though we’re sitting in the stands feeling the nervous anticipation with our hero and heroine. It’s an important factor for us and this author brought this aspect well and truly to fruition, much to our delight.

“Break the rules for me. Please.”

Nicola Rendell managed to deliver the perfect balance of explosive chemistry, naturally funny moments, swoony sweet, ridiculously sexy and abundant emotion to Hail Mary. We swooned over Jimmy, we fell in love with Mary, we giggled over her friendship with Bridget, we lost our hearts to little Annie and we howled with laughter at Frankie Knuckles, (pun intended) that cute little canine! Nicola’s comedic timing is spot on and so effortless. Not once did it feel forced, flowing easily between all characters=and many a time, this author had us in fits!

And…We’re ruined! Completely and utterly ruined by one Mr James (Jimmy) Falconi! This guy was THE package (with quite the package!) – this sexy, alpha, dirty talking, possessive, protective Quarterback with a vulnerable and sweet side and a penchant for Pinterest, Costco, children and dogs melted our hearts…and our knickers! Wowsers! Jimmy wasn’t afraid to say and show exactly how he felt and constantly had us swooning, fanning ourselves and even tearing up once or twice….In the words of Mary…… ‘He wanted to sweep me off my feet. I’d say I’m already airborne.’

“Get ready, because I’m going to kiss you.”
“I’m ready.” I take the buttons of his Henley in my fist and pull him closer.
“You fucking better be.”
,/i>

Mary was such a gorgeous and relatable heroine. Despite issues from her past, she was plucky, strong, funny and so honest, never the victim. There was no messing about with Mary, she didn’t dwell and never once did she frustrate us. We got her. We understood her and we adored her! We related to the spirit and bond of her and Bridget’s friendship. These girls were so warm and friendly and such a hoot!

Whilst the sex was off the charts hot, it was the connection between Jimmy and Mary that grabbed us in Hail Mary. We expected a light-hearted and steamy romp, and it was certainly that, but it was also a whole lot more as well! There was one scene in particular where the emotion completely overrode the physical and it was beautiful, it was heartfelt and it cemented our belief in Mary and Jimmy.

“Where have you been all my life?” …..And then her eyes meet mine, which is when she says one word. The perfect thing.
“Waiting.”

To say we enjoyed Hail Mary is an understatement! Sometimes it’s the easiest reads that bring the most enjoyment, the most effortless entertainment for the reader; such was the case with Hail Mary, and we make that summation in the most positive and flattering of ways, because we know the work involved in making a story come across this way. Nicola Rendell is proving herself to be such a versatile and talented author. We’ve loved all her characters and enjoy the fact that friendships bear as much importance as the romance factor in her stories, it’s something we love. We enjoyed Professed, we really, really liked Confessed and now we’ve been completely bowled over by Hail Mary. Watching this author evolve is extremely exciting and you can bet we’ll be grabbing anything this lady produces. Nicola Rendell well and truly has us under her storytelling spell!

Oh and note to Nicola Rendell from TBB: Please! Please! Please! Write Bridget’s book!

Strong heroine, likable hero and a lot of hot dirty sex. Some things were almost too much and I’m not a shy catholic girl, if you know what I mean :-) But it was solved “aesthetically”, so no complains.
Kitchen scene… *I-need-a-long-cold-shower*

Behind all hilarious moments, sexy times and insta-love-thing there was a believable love story of two soul-mates.

Safety note:
Possible triggers

HEA and a sweet epilogue!

Holy hotness, Batman! So much to love about this book!! (And some things, not so much!) But overall, Hail Mary was a deliciously naughty sports romance with some unforgettable passion between the main characters. Nicola Rendell is definitely a writer to watch and her book kept me engaged and laughing until the very end.

This is a dirty, dirty book and LOTS of fun. Even if you don't usually read sports romance, give Hail Mary a try! You will love this very spicy and very funny story. I loved that Jimmy and Mary were mature adults, with families, jobs, friends and very full lives. Jimmy had a sweet side and Mary was absolutely lovable and perfectly relatable. Yes, there is a touch if insta-love but it worked perfectly in this story. And the Chicago setting was fantastic.

Hail Mary was a well-written, engaging, romantic and hilarious story with maybe THE sexiest scene I have read this year. There, I said it. Hello, champagne bottle! *Fans self* I truly loved this book and love this author's fresh writing style. What detracted from the story for me was the unprotected sex when Jimmy and Mary hardly knew each other (sorry, a big turn-off for me). I also found it a little unbelievable that Mary had no clue who Jimmy was, when they both lived in the same city where he was a famous football star. But, other readers didn't seem to mind so read this little gem of a story and judge for yourself! It's got plenty of heat and humor to please even the most jaded romance reader. I can't wait to see what's coming up next for this wonderful new author!

“Yeah? You think so? You think you can handle me?”
Her eyes widen a little. “I think so,” she whispers.
Then I let her slip from my arms, such a fucking shame, but I’m not about to let her open her own door. As she gets into the cab—on the street side, the safe side—I say into her ear, “We’ll just see about that.”

Beyond 5 Gillette and Pussycat Stars

*Closes final page, sighs and beams from ear to ear*

Ah....this book....you guys, this book is AWESOME! I loved it from the very first word. I was thinking about it when I was supposed to be doing mundane day to day stuff....like working. It has a hero and heroine who will own your kindle heart. Not to mention a little girl called Annie (Jimmy's niece) who I just wanted to hug along with Frankie Knuckles....I'm not a dog person but I could be if I had a dog like Frankie Knuckles. He's adorable.

So, the synopsis is Jimmy Falconi , Quarterback for the Chicago Bears, seems to have lost his mojo when it comes to his sporting prowess of seasons gone by. There is someone younger, cockier, more reckless snapping at his heels. He keeps struggling with his throws. The Bears bring in a new physical therapist to help him - Mary Monahan. She is one of the best heroines I have ever read about. The two of them together are perfect. Funny, romantic, sad, sassy and sexy (and I am talking some of the sexiest, most intense scenes I have read *Looks at honey in a whole new light*)

The way these two meet is hilarious. Read it for yourself but this comment by Gym owner Manny gives you a flavour.

"I'm feeling like this isn't the best way for you to meet a man. Why can't you go on the internet like nice girls do?"

The secondary characters, especially Annie and Bridget bring so much to this story. Truly, there was nothing about his book that I didn't love. I laughed out loud so many times. The scene where Jimmy is preparing for Thanksgiving?......priceless!!!

Jimmy is the sort of hero who makes your ovaries explode. He is the perfect guy and so utterly perfect for Mary.

"I think this every time I see you, but you really are the most beautiful woman in the world."

Mary is the kind of heroine you would want to have as a best friend. Their story is addictive and is at the very top of my favourite reads for this year - or ever, actually. There is a beautiful honesty in both Jimmy and Mary. Their closeness in intense and heart skippingly passionate.

HEA? Yes
Cheating? No
Huge smile and feeling like you have just read a book that will forever have a special place in your heart? Absolutely.

Re read via audible Oct / Nov 2020 Narrated by Sean Crisden and Jillian Macie. Every time I re read this book I fall in love with it a little bit more. It is an all time favourite. So many hilarious moments and all that passion pulsating off of the pages. Still beyond 5 stars.....

Re read via audible November 2024. Gets even better every time.

DNF 40%
I'm thinking this may just be me, but I really wasn't feeling this one. I started it 2 days ago, and wasn't even halfway through, it wasn't that it was bad...more like it was not original and I didn't really connect with either of the leads.

**I'm not in the habit of rating books I DNF, so no rating.**

Have to say, when this started I was unsure, for some reason I thought they were younger, and it started a little odd for me. But thankfully once the heroine knocked out the hero it got soooooooooo much better.

I ended up loving this book. The heroine was great (although I do still think at times she seemed younger than she was) but I really enjoyed her as a character anyway. (loved the scene at the petrol station were she sees her Ex and gets a little revenge)

The hero was adorably hot and sweet.

All in it was a fun, dirty hot at times read with enjoyable likeable characters.

Will absolutely be checking out this author more!

Sexy Hot Cute Funny

The story was a hot sexy insta-love and cute and funny in parts. I luv how Mary and Jimmy met each other it was great and the spark they had was strong. Jimmy is a guy who knows what he wants and he wants Mary a lot she is very sexy as hell. They were so hot together from the very start and I luvd it. I like Jimmy's dominate side in the bedroom and Mary liked a lil control as well. There lives a very different Jimmy being a famous footballer and Mary a physical therapist. They have both had there fair share of drama in there lives and Jimmy is still dealing with it.

I really enjoyed this book. It's the first book from this author and I ll definitely be reading more from her. I would highly recommend this book. There is a lot to like about it and hot sexy Jimmy helps a lot.

A new author for me and I felt that old cringe sneak in. You know the one that is like if you've read one, you've read them all. What I've come to expect from sports romance more often than not lately. Don't particularly enjoy an insta-love - I like a bit more build up with some storyline behind it. Definitely am not a fan of no protection and let's get pregnant without using our brains first mentality. Yes, there were some delightful and funny moments, too. It sizzled with heat and a few really good lines of banter could be found as well. But overall, I struggled to reach that last page.

Ok, this was pretty funny.
And, after reading it, the cover makes sense! Still worthy of a Smart Bitches Trashy Books cover snark post, though!

This is 1st person POV alternating Jimmy, then Mary every other chapter.
The book starts off with Jimmy's POW while he's getting pummeled by Mary in the boxing ring at the gym where he trains. Jimmy's mesmerized by Mary. She one bad ass. And... she doesn't know that he's the QB of the Chicago Bears. What? Yep, nope, she doesn't follow football.
She doesn't give a rat's ass who he is. But... she's attracted to him too. The 2nd chapter w/ Mary's narrative, is the rest of their meet cute. Huh! Loved it. Way to grab my attention.
They get off on the wrong foot so to speak, but he does manage to ask her out.
They soon have to work with each other. The book blurb explains that Mary's his physical therapist. Jimmy is in a major slump that will end his football career if he can't get back on track.
Jimmy doesn't seem like the Jim McMahon golden boy kind of QB-thank the lord! He's more of your every day guy. Shops at Costco. It was kind of fun to have the various real life product placements throughout the book. There's a funny (to me) scene when Jimmy calls the Butterball turkey hotline.

Mary "co-owns" a dog names "Frankie Knuckles" (after the late DJ).
I loved how Jimmy was so crazy about Mary and how sweet he is with her.
Jimmy seems a little too big for a QB (283 lbs- wow!). I thought that it was a typo, but I read it a least twice. He could hurt some defensive lineman.
Mary seemed to be a little more mild mannered as the story went on. She does work with Jimmy getting him in shape physically but also getting his confidence back. She gets him to get out of his own way. He's a veteran player, but has psyched himself out--and there's a new young(er) QB yapping at his heels.

Jimmy has a twin brother that is a true bad boy. A gambler, substance abuser and terrible father to his adorable 3 year old daughter Annie.
Jimmy tries to steer clear of his brother Michael but he loves his niece. He's been unsuccessful in gaining custody. Michael keeps inserting himself into Jimmy's life. I was constantly waiting for a catastrophe.
I liked this author's previous books: Professed and Confessed. All three are standalones.
There's no ow, no om. There's a great HEA,
The big focus is Jimmy and Mary's relationship. The first 1/3 started off with their sexual encounters-then they got to know each other. The last half was Jimmy proving his love to Mary.
Their chemistry was intense. Jimmy didn't like anyone flirting with Mary. And vice versa.
I received this ARC from the Author. I give 4 stars. ps I don't care for the book cover. He looks too bulked up to be a quarterback IMO. I do look forward to reading more from this author.

Wow, I have so many emotions flooding me after reading this book that I can’t quite decide which is the dominant one. This book had EVERYTHING that I love in a great story and I cannot believe it sat unread on my kindle for so bloody long!

Jimmy meets Mary one night, sparring at a local gym. In fact, she knocks him on his arse, literally, physically and mentally. There is this moment that passes between them, one that will hold significance for both of them. The pull is so strong that Jimmy cannot let it pass him by. To his surprise and delight, Mary feels it too.

Jimmy is a quarterback in the NFL and very well known. However, Mary does not follow football and has no idea of his real identity. This is really refreshing for Jimmy because his whole being is wrapped up in football, he lives and breaths it. Spending time with a woman who has no ulterior motive and simply just wants to be with him, Jimmy the cute guy from the gym, feels incredible.

‘This woman, she’s not some cheerleader I’ll never see again. She’s not some fan. Our lives have crossed over on top of one another, and that seems as a good a sign as any to go for it. Take the plunge. See what happens. See where this feeling goes.’

Mary has never felt such a strong connection with anyone and she decides to trust in what she is feeling with this man. One night with a man that seems to be seeping with pheromones. A night that will change her life in a way she never expected.

Okay, I’m not going to go into detail about the sexy times because they are off the chart HOT. These two do things I never could have conjured up. It’s intense, demanding and so freaking gah! I think that Jimmy wants to pinch himself every day to see if she is actually for real. Like she was made just for him.

‘I used to wonder what it would feel like to be in zero gravity, what it would be like to be floating and weightless and a thousand miles above earth, where there were no rules and where everything was different and brand fucking new. Where champagne floated in droplets and your feet never touched the floor. Well. Now I know.’

The biggest part of this story is Jimmy’s football career and the pressure he is under to perform so that he keeps his position in the team. Also, there is a lot going on in Jimmy’s personal life that he is struggling to deal with. Some of this part of the story is so damn heart breaking ☹ Plus there is lots of other stuff that I haven’t even touched on…

Well, this review has been all over the place but hopefully you can make sense of it!

‘I have been waiting so fucking long to meet someone who makes me feel exactly like I do with you. Like I’m safe, and loved, and needed. And like I’m not so alone after all.’

Yuck.

He wants to give her "more than she wants, but not more than she can handle"... GROSS. And *he's* deciding what that is BTW.

Sorry but I can't get into a dude that wants to "punish" the woman for being beautiful and ensnaring him... by being rough with her in the "more than she wants" arena.

The thing he did with the champagne bottle... I will never be able to look at one the same way again.

As other reviewers have said, super convenient insta-lust turned insta-love situation that felt wildly unbelievable...

All around no for me. And no shame/hate/shade for those who love it. Different strokes 😉 and all that.
