When Jaime Lee Mann was nine years old, she decided that she would be an author when she grew up.

Many years later, Jaime Lee’s children would beg her to tell them stories at bedtime. Sometimes her stories were silly and sometimes they were magical.

The girls loved one of her magical stories so much that Jaime Lee decided to write it down. That story would eventually become Elora of Stone, the first novel in the Legend of Rhyme series.

JL (as her family calls her) lives in a pretty house in Prince Edward Island with her husband and two children.

She writes every day and plans to do so for as long as people love to read her words.

This is the fourth book in the series and I’ve read and reviewed the earlier three novels in the children's science fiction/fantasy series. This one brings together many of the strands introduced in the earlier three novels so I definitely recommend reading them first! I had really enjoyed the earlier novels and was keen to discover how things would work out for everyone. It is another action packed, time travelling story with messages being sent from the future to inform past selves, revelations about why some of the characters behave as they do, there’s even a thwarted love story in amongst it all that is another of the motivations for present actions! (Sorry, I don't want to give any spoilers to anyone who hasn't read the first three books yet!)

The children are definitely growing up in this book and there seems to be lots more going on in this fantasy multi-worlds adventure. As the history of the characters is revealed, the story becomes even more intriguing. I found some of the switches in time and location confusing at times, even though they are clearly signalled by the author. However, this doesn’t detract from the storyline and the epic saga continues, ending on another cliff hanger making me want to know what happens next!

Summary:
Grimblerod has led twins Asher and Ariana Caine back to ancient Rhyme, a time when Calla and Elora were the same age the twins are now. Though the Kingdom of Falmoor is rich with magic, the twins are unable to use their powers. They don’t know whom to trust, where to turn, or how to avoid doing something in the past that may alter the future forever.
Meanwhile, young Teagan Rogers must decide if she is ready to leave behind everything and everyone she knows to follow her mysterious destiny beneath the waves.
Will Teagan choose to become a mermaid?
Will Asher and Ariana get home before changing the course of history forever?
And can enemies truly become friends?
Plot:
At first, I had no idea what was going on in the plot, but I soon started to pick up. I do love all of the plot twists in this book, because they were so unpredictable. However, I felt some things were forced just to get the story on the move. Also, things went by a little to quickly and conveniently. It was like the story was TOO though out, and some major plot twists had to be slipped into the book at the wrong moments.
Writing:
I love Jaime Lee Mann's writing style. It's so simplistic and detailed at the same time. She is one of my favorite authors.
Characters:
I love how Mann puts many perspectives into this book; it wouldn't be good otherwise. Each character has some depth to them, and many many secrets. I never know what to expect from ANY character, due to unexpected betrayals.
Overall & Recommendations:
This was a really good book, and I flew threw it in 1 day. I had some problems with the pacing of the plot, but other than that, it was a great read. This is definitely a middle grade/children's book, and I would recommend to 10+.

I'm losing patience with this series I'm afraid. The cover picture is lovely as ever. The story though continues the cliff hanger endings, which I dislike. The story is now split among different characters in different worlds and different times, none of whom is interacting with the other worlds. A new reader to this fourth book will not have a clue what is happening or who anyone is; they might as well be reading a set of short stories. Dialogue is not enough to hold attention. And please, stop the pixies. Just stop. Their baby talk babbling and lack of point in the plot is just annoying.

Teagan is a girl from our modern world who was drawn into an enchanter's world in a previous book. This is not the same as the world of the twins from the first book. Teagan takes a further step away by going under sea to a mermaid's world. She hopes to send a message back in time to the twins Asher and Ariana in order that they might stop ocean pollution in Teagan's own world. I think. The tale is so jumbled with characters dropped and toads followed, or pixies followed, the occasional goblin followed, each bent on their own errands and none of it connected, that a young reader will lose interest. There's a demon abroad, a unicorn, there are battles and darkness. You might as well skip to those parts, because it's not a long book.

I'm giving a star for the aim to spread awareness of ocean pollution, but this isn't done well or thoroughly and could have been much better done in a book focused on the mermaid and Teagan.

I downloaded a copy from Net Galley for an unbiased review. I tried to like it better.

Another delightful read and sequel from Mann!

I've followed this book from the beginning and while I wish some parts were longer and that there was more depth to some characters and the plot, I always get a little excited diving back into a magical, fantastical world.

Each book takes place right as the other left off and this is no different. A lot has happened in this magical realm and we're in two different times now, the modern and the ancient realms.

Asher and Ariana went back back in time where they met twins Elora and Calla as young girls. Teagan is faced with the decision of joining the magical world and leaving all she knew in the modern, human realm behind.

We discover a bit more about the working of the twins' magic and why twins are so important the world of Coraira. It's a delight to continue reading this series and see how the story progresses. Not only are we given a bit more information about the history of Coraia but we also get more about the history of each character as well. A lot of questions to ask yourself here: Will darkness win? Will Teagan ever be able to find her parents? Will Asher and Ariana ever get back to their own parents?

A epic story of good versus evil, light versus dark, and if we had the power to change the future by changing the past, would we?

This is the fourth book in the Legend of Rhyme series which is a lovely little children's fantasy series full of adventure, magic and some great takeaway messages.

The books have actually seemed to mature slightly with each instalment which is great for children reading along although the books are short and sweet so it doesn't take very long to get through them. This one was the longest so far but it too ended on a cliffhanger and my biggest complaint is that I'm not sure when the next book is releasing OR how many books are going to be in this series.

I do enjoy how Teagan has been integrated into the story and the mish-mash of the past and the present as well as the environmental messages being passed onto the reader. All the original characters are still present with a lot of depth being added to them as we learn their past and back stories. Not everyone is as you think! There's also a new cast of characters being explored helping to make the world building more extensive and complex.

These stories are wonderful for children and filled with great imagination, adventure and tales of friendship, family and love.

I received this as an arc from net galley in exchange for an honest review. Grimblerod has led the twins Asher and Ariana Caine back to ancient Rhyme, a time when cailla and Clara were the same age the twins are now. Though the kingdom of Falmoor is rich with magic. Wow. Absolutely fantastic read. CNPID. Devoured in less than 24 hours. I love this series. Would be great to see this as a mini series. Can't wait for next part. This is most definitely a must read and I would highly recommend this series. Definitely worth more than 5 *.

This many books into the story, I felt like I must keep going. I think I was having a cranky day or something, but all the switching of ALL the characters in past and present, I felt like too many witches were stirring the cauldron. It s dizzying to follow so many characters. I am not sure how else the plot could be put forth, but this left me feeling I had had at least one too many spins.

Today I've got for you four stories that made me switch to the child mode :). There are magical, colorful, full of fantastic creatures and have the strong good vs evil factor. Sounds good, right? Well, let's get to details.

One small warning - since I'll be writing about the whole series, each next story might start with a spoiler for the previous book. I'll try to avoid them, but it will be hard.

First of all, I love the covers, you can already see it's going to be a fantastic journey for children. Just look at them!

I admit I waited way too long to read these stories, even though I had the first three on my kindle for a long time. When the "Second Twin" came out I decided I finally need to read them and here we are.

Sometimes it's not easy to switch to the kid-mode. Some of the books simply take you int the story and you've got nothing to say about it, but in this case, I had to "manually" change my way of thinking. It wasn't easy because even though these stories are magical they also have this cruel darkness lurking about, ready to grab the unsuspecting reader.

What bothered me was the simple language in which it was written. And maybe the point of view - I never like the all-knowing narrator and it was especially annoying when connected with the dialogs. It felt like it was written for small kids, but I wouldn't want to read them a story like this simply because they would be too frightened.

Luckily the author improves with each story - language, characters and events get better, more interesting and a bit more complicated.

Elora of Stone

The first story is supposed to introduce you to the world, main characters and interest you enough to keep reading the series, right? The thing is there's just too much introduction and jumping from character to character, going through years so fast that you don't really care what happened before and when you're half way though you're finally getting to the point where the book blurb came in. Seriously, when you'll check the Goodreads description it pretty much starts half way through the story, which isn't a big loss, but it's kind of strange.

After this one, I thought I won't make it to the next book, especially since the ending might work as final (it's not, but it would do if needed).

I have mixed feeling about this one - the story was rather slow in the first half and then it flashed through all the events till the end. But I guess I'd like it as a kid.

Into Coraira

The second story pulls you into the magical realm of Coraira which is way more fun than the simple village and some almost-magical tree. This is when the story really picks up and from now on each book ends with a definite "must continue reading" event.

Yes the POV still annoyed me, but I've started getting used to it here and I could enjoy the story more. This time, there's no half-book introduction, we're heading straight into the action zone and we're going to stay there for the next few stories.

Two kids (who finally became the main characters) are reunited and learning their newly acquired skills. But the evil that plans to destroy magic won't give them much time.

I really like the magic of this new world, it looks like author's imagination really kicked in in this one.

Teagan of Tomorrow

We'll be moving to time-travel zone now and meeting a new important character - Teagan. Part of this story will take place in our times and I have to admit the twins reaction to our world was quite well described. They were clearly lost here and that's something that's usually missing from the stories in which characters move from ar-away-past to present days.

Other than that it looks like even greater evil took over the magical lands and the whole future shaped itself accordingly and our heroes (new and old) have to try saving Coraira and their family and friends.

This was my favorite part of the series. It's dynamic and it won't let you loose track on when and where the characters are.

Second Twin

If you thought you knew all about the characters by now check this story. It shows some of them in a completely different light switching your point of view and telling you not everyone is bad from the beginning and it might not be their own choice.

This time, we're moving from place to place and between different time periods. It happens so fast that you might get lost if you'll loose concentration. In theory, each chapter begins with time and location, but at some point, it doesn't help much.

Still, if you'll manage to track it all this is a rather good story, a worthy continuation with some new aspects to the character's past and the world's future.

~~~~
These stories will surely bring some enjoyment to kids. The author let loose her imagination and it's clear she gets better and better with each book. I might've been a bit rough with my ratings, but I was really annoyed with the narration. I was so relieved that the later parts have more dialog and less all-knowing narrator.
Review
‘Second Twin’ is the fourth instalment in the 'Legend of Rhyme' series and one that I really looked forward to. I originally fell in love with this series because of the kindness and tranquility it emitted. It felt like one of those bedtime fairytales which stay with you for a long time. 'Second Twin' was either going it exceed all my expectations, or let me down... And I really hoped for the initial.
I enjoyed the length of the novella, but I thought it could have been a bit more concise and shorter. It was certainly longer than the previous novellas, so 'Second Twin' no longer felt like a bedtime fairytale but a full-length novella.
The writing contained that beautiful, transformative and good essence which it held in the entire series. Jodie Lee Mann's writing continues to enchant me with its simplistic yet engaging style!
The story idea was quite entertaining but I would highly recommend for readers to re-read this the previous instalments if they haven't already. The novella launches straight into the story which was left off in the previous instalment. I found the multitude of characters a bit hard to remember and all the unique and secret links/relationships they held with the other characters.
I also felt like this novella's story didn't really live up to what I hoped it would be. I expected a lot more about Grimblerod and Asher and Arianna's younger siblings – which I found to be extremely exciting – and this novel didn't really explore any of that. I sincerely hope the next instalment does!
I couldn't spot any typos or spelling mistakes in my ARC. I enjoyed the level of grammar and the effective and meaningful prose.
Congratulations to Jamie Lee Mann on publishing her FOURTH instalment in the 'Legend of Rhyme' series!
Rating Plan
1 star : Strongly did not like the book, writing and plot was bad. Idea of the book was against my liking.
2 star : Didn't like it, didn't find it interesting or gripping. Seemed to drag on to me.
3 star : An average book. Wasn't bad or good. Everything else was well done. Original idea.
4 star : Like a 3 star but has potential to it as a series or the book grew on me as it progressed and certain scenes captured me. I Enjoyed it and read it in one sitting.
5 star : I LOVED IT! I stayed up late until 3 am. Author is a genius, characters, plot, idea, development, EVERYTHING was EXCELLENT. Nothing else can possibly be said except that its 5 STAR!
This book is a fast and furious trip through time and space, through the fairy and human realms. It provides the background to the series: the history of the founding of Coraira, and of Rhyme, the family tree of Elora with her descendants and ascendants, and of the love affair between Grimblerod and Freya. All the favourite – and most hated – characters are back.
In potentially world shattering paradoxes, younger versions of some characters meet their older selves. We discover why the older Elora is evil, and what the sinister “Order” wants to make of the world. Inter-sibling rivalries and jealousies have resounding consequence through time, and maybe this time it is too late to undo the damage that evil has done.
As always, Fidget and Wink are there to ensure that things don’t get too dire. My favourite section of the book was when they travel to modern human world, see the “evil” self-proclaimed Queen Elsbeth and attempt to rescue an enchanted gnome.
Once again, there are discrepancies between “the way people seem versus what they really are”, and no-one’s alignment with good or evil can be taken for granted – except perhaps Asgall, who remains evil incarnate.
The pace never lets up, and as usual the story ends on a cliff-hanger. I cannot give up now, but I may have to wait a while for my next fix. This series is so engrossing, each book deserves to be read many times and treasured. I predict that it will become a classic – and surely there must be a film (something like “Labyrinth”?) – what fun the animators would have with such a rich universe.
What I expected:
This is book 4 in the series, based around the Caine family. The last book in the series ended with Ariana and Asher being transported to another time. It seemed like a trick played on them by Grimblerod, who had his own agenda. I was anticipating that I'd read more about Asher, Arian and Teagan; and the developments in their adventures. The previous books have all been reasonably short books, so I anticipated a reasonably quick read too.
What it was:
Of all the books in the series, this one is the longest. I liked the added element that Teagan brings to the book, from quite a different slant than the other characters. There is a great deal going on, across multiple environments and timelines; with switching back and forth between them. Jaime Lee Mann does flag up where you are each time very clearly though, so it does help a great deal with keeping up (plus I have one of those brains which leaps from one topic to another and back again, so I was at a tiny bit of an advantage there!).
I think that JLM has really done her best work with this book, it was more engaging and 'grown up' in its style. The characters are 'growing' and there seems to be more going on. The storyline does seem to be moving on slowly though, I felt that Teagan's story had only just been touched on, as the book ended. I guess I'll be waiting on the next book then!
At the snap of a finger I am swept off to another fantasy world with a mystifying twist of fate, along with some beautiful mind pictures that will stay with this reader for a while. Ever since I was a small child I have enjoyed reading about these mythical creatures because they have always fascinated me in so many ways. And, the more I read about them, the more interesting they become.
SECOND TWIN, by Jaime Lee Mann had just the right amount of mystery, along with a whiff of magic to help develop that fantasy world.
Let us commence our story with a picture of Calla sounding the conch shell unleashing the magic that seemed to float on the air as Teagan is about to meet a mermaid. Together, will she and Calla be able to break the curse, thus bringing Asher and Ariana back, or does someone else have bigger plans for the twins?
As they head back to the cottage for the potion, will something happen along the way that might possibly help or hinder the situation? Will time be altered before their work is done, leaving everything in utter disorder?
I want to thank the author for taking me on another wonderful journey through this remarkable read.
In Second Twin, we are introduced to a lot more backstory. This makes a lot of sense, because at the end of Teagan of Tomorrow, a spell gone wrong brings the twins way back into the past. Here, we learn more about Teagan's parentage, the twins' respective destinies, Elora and Calla's past, and Gimblerod's curse and backstory.
I think it was here that I noticed a lot more discrepancies (compared to the previous books), but at the same time, it doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the book and series, so I feel like it's okay for a children's series. Overall, I think the mood and tone of this book is darker than that of the previous books, and it brings into question just whether or not one can fight destiny. (Basically, you want the next book!)
Gimblerod is leading the twins back in time when Falmouth is full of magic, except the twins can't use their magic. Why? Asher and Ariana don't know who to trust. Why? They are afraid to do anything that might change the future. Teagan has discover her heritage under the sea. Her parents are dead. Will Teagan decide to live under the sea than go back? What will happen to the twins?
Though the book is detailed, I read this book last night before going to sleep. I enjoyed the different perspectives in the story. It keeps the story interesting and fresh. Enjoy!
"Second Twin" is the first of this series that I read without putting it down. Although I am aware this book is geared for kids, I still enjoyed the action, characters and the imagery. There are so many images in this book that you can see so vividly, there is no doubt in my mind that it should be a movie.
I eagerly await "Blood and Stars!"
The first half of the book I was confused which did continue on in the second half of the book, but less. Because of shifting between different times and places within the world happened very often and very quickly. So I had a bit trouble keeping track of what was happening and who we were following. But the ending totally made up for it. That is a plot twist I didn’t see coming, but I love it!
With the twins, Ariana and Asher, lost in the past, and Teagan suddenly thrust into the magical realm of Coraira, the Legend of Rhyme series becomes even more dangerous and exciting. Second Twin is the fourth book of Jaime Lee Mann’s fantasy series for middle grade children (i.e. 8-13 year olds). Containing most of the key characters that readers are already familiar with, a new, sinister individual is introduced to shake the story up even more.
Second Twin is made up of two or three storylines that twist around each other to result in one explosive conclusion. Teagan discovers immediately that she is destined to become a mermaid and an apprentice to Starla, the ruler of the sea. Without giving Teagan a chance to get used to her new tail, Starla involves her in trying to help locate and return the twins to their correct timeline. The twins, however, are in even more peril than being in the wrong time zone. Tricked by the new, malicious character, something evil happens to Asher, leaving him once again separated from his sister Ariana. Whilst all this is going on, the reader is given insight to Elora’s – a previous antagonist – past, learning how she came to be so evil; in contrast Teagan is also learning something new; the truth about her parentage.
There is not as much detail about Teagan as some readers may be hoping for. She was the title character of the previous novel, however in this book she becomes more of a secondary character. Teagan’s transition from young girl to mermaid happens far to quickly to be appreciated. An entire book could have been devoted to this event, instead it happens in a handful of paragraphs. Nevertheless, Second Twin is filled with so many exhilarating twists and turns that it hardly matters when some aspects are not described at length.
Throughout this book the theme of twins crops up again and again. The unique relationship between twins is emphasized as a special bond, but also as a way to wield evil power. Readers will not be able to trust their preconceived judgments about the good and wickedness of key characters, causing all to question everything they believe.
Second Twin is the most action packed book of the series so far. With no need for introductions to characters and settings, there is more opportunity to develop the plot and fill in gaps in the history of the story, until concluding on yet another cliffhanger. Fans of the series will not be disappointed with the latest developments, although you may not be pleased to know you are in for a wait for the fifth book, Blood and Stars, to find out what happens next.
This is the fourth book, in case you didn't already realize that, and a prime example of an author that continues to grow. Jaime's first book was a little bit rough around the edges, but this 4th installment really shines. I'm impressed with her continued growth and ability to accept and apply constructive criticism from her readers. I'm also very impressed with the growth her characters have had through the four books. It's one thing to have children in a series, but to have them grow and develop as these have isn't an easy task. If you haven't taken a trip down her imaginative lane, you might take that path less traveled and discover a piece of enchantment. Overall the series is well-constructed and an easy read. I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the 4th in the Rhyme series and is a fantasy adventure aimed at middle grade children.
Grindlerod has taken Asher and Ariana to a time when Elora and Calla are much the same age as they are. Now that they know what Elora became, how can they possible trust her? A stranger then enters their lives with the promise of help. After all they have been through is it wise to trust him? Meanwhile Teagan is learning what it's like to become a mermaid, but will she be happy enough to make it permanent?
Again the storylines moved in interesting directions but a cliff-hanger smacks you in the face at the end. Many timeframes and scenes are covered in this book, and the jump between them as well as the length of the chapters made it confusing to read at times. I do like the path that the story has taken, and the way that Starla alerts her future self to a memory is very clever. The main themes of family, friendship, loyalty, love and being the hero are beautifully explored in the series. A very entertaining read, rich with interesting characters (although I found the pixies VERY annoying) and an adventure-filled plotline.
Thanks to NetGalley and Blue Moon Publishers for the chance to review the book.
Loved the other titles from Legend of Rhyme, but with this one the author goes to a whole new level.
The story takes more form and becomes more interesting as we travel in time back and forth unraveling details that will give more depth to the characters we become to love.
If you haven't read the other installments, you can understand the story, but I'm sure you'll want to read the others. (well, your child would like to know what happened).
This is perfect as a bed time story and having quality time with your kids.
There is a lot of creativity and goodness put into this work and I'm looking forward to read what happens next.
This is a very refreshing story as faeries and mermaids and goblins and unicorns come to life.
The last of the ARC copies provided to me by Blue Moon Publishers and Netgalley is complete. Beware! It is a cliffhanger! I know many of the folks who read my reviews can't stand being left on a cliffhanger while the writer is still slaving away on the conclusion.
Now I understand a little bit more why Mann took us to the present day in book three. There's a lot of time shifting in this book. It's handled well though and the setting is clearly defined in each time. I think I also know why Mann calls this her personal favorite. It was a lot of fun to finally learn the origin story of Grimblerod, as he was the first peculiar character we met in the series at all. In fact, backstories abound in this book, showing us another twist and more depth to characters we've met previously. It does cause me to wonder how she plans to wrap it all up soon.
I was quite shocked at how well this book was pulled off. in the previous book I was a bit disappointed as it didn't have the same charm of the other ones.
In this book the special and unique abilities have returned making this a wonderful and easy read.
The only part that I dislike is the ending which seems to always leave off on a cliff hanger.
