Werewolf bounty hunter Lexi is badass to the bone. She had no problem protecting herself in the seedy underground vampire clubs of New York City - until the Immortal she had summoned actually appeared. Five brothers born from aspects of goddess Isis in fourth Egyptian dynasty, warriors battled evil monsters and kept the light-dark balance. But one went rogue.
It wasn't the intricate tattoos around his well-defined muscles that intimidated her; it was the raw power shimmering in his golden brown eyes, power mingled with lust. Though she longed to give in to the passion and pleasure he promised, they first had a curse to break, a brother to find, and a whole legion of vampires to prevent from joining ... The Darkening.
Robin T. Popp grew up watching Star Trek and reading Nancy Drew, Robert Heinlein, Sharon Green and Piers Anthony. She loved the daring and romantic exploits of heroic characters on grand adventures in otherworldly places. It wasn’t long before she wanted to write such tales to share with others. Though she was forced to take a thirty-year detour through the real world – which certainly wasn’t without its share of adventures – armed now with two masters degrees, a fulltime job and a family, she has taken the first steps toward realizing her original dream of becoming an author. Too Close to the Sun, a futuristic romance published in July 2003, was her first novel. Out of the Night is her second novel and represents her first foray into another of her favorite alternate realities – the realm of vampires. Robin lives southwest of Houston, Texas with her husband, three kids, three dogs, two frogs, one rabbit and a mortgage. She is living the American dream.
Ugh I was so underwhelmed with this book. I didn't like Lexi. I thought she was so wishy-washy and not nearly as strong-minded as she thought she was. She came off as weak to me. I don't care for the pseudo-strong heroine. In other words, she's tough and independent, but emotionally she's very immature and flightly. This kind of heroine bugs me big time. I'd rather see a quiet, gentle, but emotionally mature heroine anyday. She's much more strong to me. Poor Lexi. She didn't win this reader over at all. I think she's probably one of my least favorite werewolf heroines. She had a bit of a sleazy vibe to me (I have a low tolerance for sleazy). The way she was shedding her clothes left and right, walking around naked like no big deal. And the way she handled her sexual business really got to me. I understand that when a wolf goes into to heat, she has to have 'it', but why would you turn down a sure thing with a guy that you know is pretty decent and you're attracted to (the hero Darius), go to some group sex party and hook up with a stranger just to get your freak on with? Thankfully the stranger was Adrian. My sleazometer went to red level on that scene.
In this story, Lexi has done it with a stranger in the past more than once, and she's not particularly proud of that, but accepting at the same time, so it made her behavior even more nonsensical. In her mind, if she gave into her lust for Darius, it gave him control over her. And sleeping with a stranger is better? I don't think so!
The other thing I didn't like was the whole emphasis on sex magic. Man, there was too much of that in this book. Frankly, it was gross to me. Some of the story ideas were interesting, but the execution was lacking. It would have helped if I liked the heroine and hero. I didn't like Lexi at all, and I was indifferent towards Darius. I have to admit that I liked the action scenes and some of the magic stuff seemed very vivid. The villain was pretty creepy, too.
My other issue is the whole 'selling' of paganism. Okay, no big if that is the religion of most of the people in this book, but I don't want to read a treatise on the subject, aka Introduction to Paganism. I want to read a romance. I am consistent in this, because I don't even like preachiness in a Christian romance. Lay enough of this down to set the backdrop and move on.
After reading this second outing, and being so underwhelmed, I'm really kind of blah about continuing this series. That's a dilemma for me, because Jennifer Ashley (one of the writers in this series) is one of my favorite authors (although I don't read her erotic books because I don't like erotica). I want to see this series out, but I'm lacking the motivation. This book definitely didn't help me.

My sister and I went to the paranormal romance section of our local used bookstore and challenged each other. I picked out a book for her to read and she picked out a book for me to read. This was the book my sister chose for me, and it was one of the worst books I’ve ever read.
Listen, I do not hate the romance genre, I love romance! I don’t want to shit on anyone who loves this book or books like it… but this was not for me.. at all.
I’m going to be getting into some spoilers here, so proceed with caution if you haven’t read it yet:
Okay so there’s this “badass” werewolf girl named Lexi and she runs into this “immortal” Darius and while she’s on a bounty hunter mission and he helps her. There’s a whole plot to this book with something called “The Big Bad” and something to do with Satan and demons but honestly I didn’t comprehend most of it. There was a big chunk of the book where they’re chasing down an evil leprechaun and it was the most ridiculous shit I’ve ever read. I also couldn’t STAND Lexi’s “best friend” Mai she was so fucking stupid… her character was pointless and Lexi was trying SO hard to keep this bitch out of trouble and she never listened!
Anyway, Lexi and Darius are of course are attracted to each other almost instantly and just want to rip each other’s clothes off. But the plot twist is that Darius’s MOTHER cursed him and so if he “climaxes” during sex he loses his memory??? So he hooks up with some girl at a vampire club and looses his memory so Lexi has to help him get it back, which he does pretty quickly so it’s not even that inconvenient.
There’s also this vampire named Rico who Lexi used to hook up with when she was in “heat” (she’s a werewolf and when it’s about to be a full moon she goes into “heat” and gets really horny). Rico and Darius have this little friendship and the chemistry is just 🤌MMMM… i wish Rico and Darius would’ve gotten together instead.
There’s also this one part where they go to some kind of sex cult meeting under cover, and Lexi doesn’t want to be caught so she’s trying to find some guy to have sex with at this sex cult meeting… the guy she ends up booking up with is of course Darius who is also under cover… but he leaves before he can “climax” so he doesn’t lose his memory and she thinks he hates her.
Anyway - the rest is all plot stuff i didn’t care about so i’m skipping to the end. Lexi and Darius are secretly in love with each other and she’s kidnapped by the bad guys. He goes to save her but OF COURSE they gave her some kind of horny potion and if she doesn’t have sex with Darius shes going to die!! So Darius has sex with her but he knows he’s going to lose his memory by doing so… but he has to save her life! So they do it and then he is whisked away magically back to wherever he came from for some reason and she thinks he’s dead. Weeks go by and Lexi is depressed because she thinks he’s dead, but low and behold she’s PREGART!
So then he COMES BACK! And she tells him she’s prognert and he literally says “I know. I can control my seed and i thought i was going to forget you so I wanted to leave you with something.” SO THIS MAN LITERALLY IMPREGNATED HER ON PURPOSE?!?!? I’m so done. Don’t read this.
Oh my god did this book suck! The first was so good and this one is so terrible! Skip it and go to the third in the series. That's what I'm doing.
Why? you may ask? It has the stupidest Big Miss I've ever come across and I couldn't get past chapter 17 because of it. I kept reading until the Big Miss was resolved and the resolution was as bad and unsatisfying as the Big Miss itself.
Our very unempathetic hero has a god for a mother. In her love for him she curses him so that if he climaxes, he loses his memory. The first time he and our heroine have sex, he is pulled into a dream world by his father and falls asleep under and in the heroine. At the airport he's about to kiss Lexi when a sees a young woman and pull away from Lexi to stare at the woman. He can tell she's upset, but he doesn't feel like talking about it at the moment even though there's time while they're in the cab coming back from the airport. Her feelings are at the bottom rung of importance to Darius. Then, she and Darius and she nearly have sex in a club when a woman he's chasing walks by and Darius literally pulls out of Lexi and follows the other woman with no explanation at all. To be clear: Darius is actually inside Lexi when he abandons her for another woman. Days later Lexi finds Darius with another woman at a club and, still, no explanation.
For some reason, given as it being that time of the month for wolves, Lexi goes for more the next day and he turns her down. Darius muses at various parts of the book that Lexi must be very upset, but that never rises above whatever is shiny in front of him.
At this point, I was getting angry and starting skimming to see how this was resolved. The plot of the book was entirely ruined for me and I gave up at chapter 17. In that chapter, Darius breaks into Lexi's house because he knows she won't let him in. Screw agency! Just barge right in to her home no matter what the heroine would like. Darius spends the night on the couch and he still doesn't explain why he keeps rejecting her and leaves the next morning without so much as a thank you note.
Believe it or not, he never offers an explanation for his behavior. Lexi has to ask for one. He tells her about the curse and somehow that explains his behavior. How does the curse explain pulling out and chasing another woman without saying anything to the woman you're currently inside of?
I haven't even gotten to her dumb as a post best friend. This character solely exists to be a victim and move the plot along. Wow, was she annoying.
I think these books are pretty standalone once you read the first one, so skip this one. I wish I had.
This Immortal book has Darius as the hero. Darius was called during the Calling spell from book one (The Calling)except he was delayed. His mother is the goddess Sekhmet who has kept him with her in Ravenscroft (the home of the Immortals. He is the only one who stayed after they lost Tain 700 yrs ago). When he gets free of his mother (she reminds me of Artemis in Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter books...you know, keeping you with me so you don't leave me), he is called to a witch-werewolf named Lexi in NY. They battle demons, and before he meets up with his brother Adrian from book 1, he realizes the Big Bad is here in NY, not still in seattle where Adrian is. So he and Lexi slip easily into the sex-club owned by vampires and find the demon, and surprise surprise... Tain! Tain seems to hate the male demon, but when it takes on female form, he loves it...her...whatever. Even though she/he torture him by peeling his flesh from him every 3 days (for 700 yrs!). But in this installment of the Immortals, Tain is still completely mad, but his moments of lucidity are more and more, and he helps Darius a few times. Hmm...is he redeemable? Or will he be killed with the demon, who escaped again...but book #3 has Kalen, so let's see what our Scottish hero can do!
Lexi Corvin: werewolf; witch; part of the summoning of the immortals in 1st book; bounty hunter; in heat; and Darius drops into her lap;
Darius Santiago: immortal; mother 'cursed' him to forget everything if he has sex - she doesn't want him to stay on earth; wants to save/rescue his brother (700 years tortured, and now on demon's side to destroy the world); wants to do his calling to keep balance on earth of good/bad;
as they unravel it all... and he avoids sex because he doesn't want to forget all, but never finds the time to explain it to her...
they save the world... they don't save his brother and the demon escapes... she almost dies, but he gives her is life tattoo... and now they are connected... to live and fight another day...

Although I at times found the dialogue a tad "juvenile", it was still a seamless 2nd chapter in this series. The first three books are written by 3 different authors but you actually wouldn't know it. In this 2nd book we meet brother number 3 of the Immortal Warriors. Darius hears The Calling and under the strong disapproval of his mother goes to Earth and ends up with Lexi who is a werewolf bounty hunter. Trouble in the form of a very strong, very old, demon has evil plans and still has Tain, the youngest of the five brothers, ensorcled in his web. Lexi and Darius have more help now as Ricco, a vampire, and Mai, reporter and wood nymph, join their cause.
This KU library read is a great addition to the Immortals series. It moves the battle against an ancient demon from the west coast to the east and to the demon clubs of NYC. Darius, an Immortal, was summoned in the calling in book one, but was unable to answer. His goddess mother had him trapped in Ravenscroft for the past seven hundred years by taking his life force from him. When he stole it back, he was propelled to Earth, but with limitations that left him vulnerable and near mortal. He lands at the feet of a human woman, but not just any woman. Lexi is a werewolf, a witch and a bounty hunter. And she's the most amazing thing he's seen in seven hundred years. I was totally captivated by this story and can't wait to get into book three.
Darius story. His main problem is a simple case of mother/son fixation. She needs to learn how to let go.
I like Lexi but I was a bit confused as to what she is. At the start I couldn’t tell whether she was a witch or a werewolf, then I figured out she was both, I think. No real explanation either way. She’s got the strangest friends. Mai is a bubble head idiot and heath just pops up way too conveniently. But Ricco is way cool. And Fury is so cute.
Tain is so stupid and they need to cut off Amadja’s hand.
Fave scenes: the nymph godmother, Fury’s story, Darius-Ricco fight team and moving the tattoo.
I loved this book. I had read it several years ago, but had it in paperback, which I had to donate, so I finally "snapped it up" for my Kindle. I love Lexi, she's a strong woman who is extremely loyal and protective of those she cares for. I loved what she did for Darius in the "big battle". I hope to see some more of her in the other books in the series. I loved Darius too, and loved how kind and generous he is. I'm so happy that he & Lexi met, and again, I hope to see more of him in the next few books...I'd 💜 to have some of his tatts, especially the rope and Fury! 😀
Darius is unique with all his special tatoos and it was wrong for his goddess mom 2 hurt him with that messed up spell that could get him killed. its 1 thing for her 2 protect her son but its totally different when it goes over and could kill him and 4get everything about himself as a protector. Tain cant seem 2 get his shit straight by going back and forth on what he wants with darius. it was really good that he found her and she has a few added surprises about herself and being selfless against the man she loves. I cant wait for more 2 come asap!!
Well, this one was such a rollercoaster of action and events that at one point my head was spinning! I found the characters as interesting as they were irritating with their behavior, but I can assume that when it comes to conversations between two interested parties, in the real world it could even be worse! She wants him, but she thinks that he doesn't want her, so they still hook up, and then again they don't know what they feel... Not to mention his "problem"... But all in all, quite hot, intriguing and for me personally great!
The Darkening is book 2 of The Immortals series and it's written by Robin T Popp. This book follows Darious, the Immortal brother of Adrian from book 1. This story is packed with suspense and drama. Lexi finds Darious when he is thrown into earth dimension from Ravenscroft. Their path to stopping Tain and the demons is complicated by Darious' mother by accident. It's a wild journey and one you won't want to miss.
2.5 stars. Good, but I’m unenthusiastic. I picked it off Kindle Unlimited because it came with the audio included, and figured out pretty soon it wasn’t the first book in the series. I went back to check, and Amazon doesn’t have the books numbered. And book 1 didn’t have audio. So, this is probably the only book of the series I’ll read.
The book itself was pretty darn good but the damn accents made it really difficult to understand and I had to work at understanding what was said or replaying a number of places, which totally nullifies the reason for using audiobooks.
Imagine being join for all eternity. Lexi, a werewolf shifter and bounty hunter, and Darius, an immortal are joined in such a way that they will never be separate again. They join to take in the demon threatening humanity.
This series commences when author Jennifer Ashley introduced us to the Immortals in The Calling. The story picks up, superbly with Robin T. Popp with The Darkening. Instead of Seattle and LA with Adrian, we're now in Ravenscroft and then NYC with Adrian's brother, Darius. In the first chapter we learn that Darius's mother, Sekhmet, has kept him at Ravenscroft by stealing/safeguard his life essence into a orb necklace she wears. Darius can't leave, which is why when he appeared at the Calling from book #1, looking like he was in great pain. He explains to his mother that humans and earth are at stake and he must answer the Call. Sekhmet doesn't want Darius on earth, seeking hedonists pursuits like his brothers do which is why she's kept him at Ravenscroft with her. So when she refuses to give him back his life essence he breaks the orb necklace and the power drifts back into it and immediately transports him to NYC. In NY, bounty hunter, fire witch and werewolf Lexi Corvin has lured her bail jumper into an alley where they are now trading blows. Lexi has this under control but when Darius appears out of nowhere he's enraged and ready to kill the runner for hurting Lexi. Lexi recognizes him immediately as an Immortal and after subduing her lawbreaker she tells Darius that she knows who he is and that she can help him get in touch with Adrian. Darius is thrilled at the prospect of seeing his brother again. After a talk and arranging a plane ticket, it's decided that Darius is going to fly to Seattle. But after a night of exploring the city Darius believes that the real trouble is exactly where he already is.
I was surprised the the writing style between Ashley and Popp was so similar. There were moments early on when I had to check the cover to remember who I was reading. That aspect was really cool, even if I didn't have the highest regard for the first book. I was a little concerned with the way the story begins. Darius has some major mommy issues and I was thinking to myself, how much of a hunky, warrior hero is this guy going to be when he's allowed his mom to trap him for 700 years?
As the story moved on I could see more of Popp coming out and it was good stuff. There were so many little twists that made this story work well. Poor Darius's mean mommy casting a spell on him was great for adding in lots of sexual tension to his and Lexi's relationship. When Darius falls into the dreamworld with Whitley* that first time I was devastated and laughing. Poor Lexi. Then Whitley (p.100) explains what dear old mommy did with her spell and I was devastated and laughing again but so excited for the unexpected twist.
*(After reading book #8, I'm assuming "Whitley" is a priest in Ravenscroft and Darius's father (??) except in the story Beyond the Mist (Popp's short in book #8) his name is Wesley.) Added 03/04/13
Darius first attempt at getting Lexi into bed was hilarious. He simply starts disrobing. It's funny, and the attraction was instant, just like the first book, but it was so different here. Things heat up, things cool down, things simmer. Lexi has a reason to be all worked up so the attraction works on her side. Darius is like a fish out of water. Everything in the world is new to him, even though he's kept up with human history, but his reactions are so innocent that the seduction feels natural.
I also liked the introduction of the long believed, extinct succubus. It was a cool development and an interesting way for us to learn of Sekhmet's spell. Characters like Ricco and Mia were nice new additions though, in the case of Mia I almost wanted her to die. She just kept acting stupidly and I thought Lexi's constant need to check on her got old. But Mia had a cool little secret of her own and that another little twist. This book kept my interested, emotionally invested and kept me guessing. Daruis's body being covered in tattoos that double as weapons was wicked cool and sexy. And poor Lexi and her 'needs' kept the book nice and steamy even when they couldn't do much about it.
I'm writing a longer review on another site but the long and short of it while I write that is that I didn't like it. Maybe it was the whole process of taking notes as I was reading instead of very passively reading it, logging it here and putting it out of my mind.
As I've bit by bit ventured out of my comfort zone and reading a lot of romance, especially paranormal romance, I've learned for myself by trial and error what works and what doesn't work and in my personal and by no means professional opinion, it comes down to chemistry. Having the two love interests fight and be antagonistic to each other (while it grates on my nerves in most cases) is a given but there has to be a point, at least somewhere near the middle, where the man and woman decide they have a lot in common, put aside their differences, admit they are attracted to each other, blah blah blah, you get the point. In this case, the heartfelt confession gets put off and delayed by wounded pride and misfired spells. Let me explain what I mean:
Our hero, Darius, is an immortal warrior living in another dimension with his goddess mother Sekhmet (as in the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet) and he gets summoned by some witches to defeat this evil guy but due to his meddling mother, his soul (which she kept in a necklace around her neck) doesn't recombine with his body completely, so he gets sent back to Earth as partial mortal (This doesn't sink in until the last chapters, even though his mother's priest/step-dad told him earlier in the book) and due to a spell misfire, what was going to be a spell to keep him from getting distracted by Earth's tempting carnality, now if he has sex and reaches climax, his memory gets erased.
For clarification: 1) Yes, this does become relevant to the ending boss battle ending 2) Yes, when Darius and the main character Lexi have sex and he PASSES out, he doesn't impart this info on her (even though he gets told about it by his mother's priest) and she takes that to mean Darius isn't attracted to her and mope about it for an absurdly long amount of time, whereas I punch myself repeatedly in the face
Because the cathartic heartfelt confession kept getting delayed and the characters (especially Lexi) were starting to act like idiots, I became less and less invested in the story. Even the stuff involving demons just put me in mind of a boss battle in "Devil May Cry".
