He strikes from outer space... hurtling Earthward on his dead mission of cosmic vengeance! Rom is back for the first time in decades, and nothing can stop him! This introductory story re-introduces the character and leads into July's all-new, ongoing series! Plus, in an exclusive prologue to June's debut issue, the U.K.'s greatest weapon is on the warpath-and the fate of the world is in Action Man's hands... as usual.
SOLDIER: "Now DIE LIKE THE REST!" *blasts Rom* ROM: "Nngh!" ROM: "P-painful, but... a pain I can endure, wraith. Can YOU say the same when my neutralizer sings?"
LOL Oh gosh. Who wrote this?
Rom is a giant robot who has come to save Earth from an alien invasion of "Dire Wraiths."
Ummmmmmmmmmm.... extremely cheesy.
Then we get an Action Man preview, and boy, the cheesy doesn't stop.
MAN: "And Action Man... He's all he's cracked up to be?"
WOMAN: "A master of all forms of fighting, communication, and disguise. He's a tenth-level judo blackbelt, member of MENSA, and a three-star Michelin chef. He's saved the earth more times than I care to consider.... I genuinely don't know what the planet would do without him."
Come ON. Are you kidding me with this shit? Get it together. o.O
Tl;dr - I can't recommend either of them based on these previews. The art is decent, though.
One can't help but look back at the IDW effort to bring to life so many properties into a single shared universe with an ironic degree of nostalgia now as in itself it was a nostalgia play. And this FCBD feature for ROM was a pretty strong effort to showcase the space knight at his best and show rather than tell the key details of his backstory.
I really did enjoy the look they created for him here - a wonderful update to the core character.
I remember ROM from years ago, with his own comic (1979-86) meant to accompany a toy line and several crossovers (with The Hulk and others.) Not sure if this is a reboot or a reprint?
Crazy comics reviews! I actually picked up the first volume of ROM in trade paperback from the library, but was unable to find the trade in Goodreads (first time for everything). For low-star reviews of uncategorized works, I always consider posting something to one of Ayn Rand's works ("Atlas Shrugged" had formulaic writing and lousy penciling) but I suppose this will do.
There's a good guy robot ROM! He has a mysterious backstory, which is mostly omitted from the first volume trade. There are bad guy wraiths! They're evil and exceptionally good at fooling stuffed-shirt members of the military. ROM has a scanner that shows all, except when it doesn't, and a gun that destroys all wraiths, except when it doesn't. Maybe this would be better if there were a crossover with G.I. Joe (TM) or the Transformers (TM)!
Serviceable for after-school cartoons so long as there's plenty of ads for sugary cereals. More action figures are needed. The writing is mostly abysmal, the penciling is above average. If you miss anything, don't worry, ROM will re-state all plot particulars in the first five pages of the next issue! Any other flaws will be disintegrated with my Wraith Neutralizer!
