Val and Chaz broke up after Chaz safeworded unnecessarily during a scene. Can they find a way to come back together?
A few months ago Chaz safeworded during a scene, just because he was feeling neglected and bitchy. Val was understandably upset that his sub lied and the two of them split up. Now it's months later and Val is miserable to be around, so his friend sends him to cottage country to his private house there to vacation and get over himself. At least that's what Val thinks is happening. In reality, Chaz has also been lured to the lake house and is waiting there so they can hopefully get back together.
Despite his shock at finding Chaz at the lake-house, Val decides to do a scene. Will it be the last scene they share or will they find a way to move past what happened?

Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."
A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.
Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.
Because I am not in the BDSM lifestyle, I may miss some of the subtle nuances and rules. However, I can certainly understand how devastating to a D/s couple's relationship and trust it would be for a sub to safeword not when he has actually reached his limit, but because he is behaving like a spoiled, petulant boy. That is where Val and Chaz found themselves and which precipitated their breakup. Now, a friend has forced them together in the hopes this will help to resolve their issues.
What develops is an incredibly intense scene with some very sadist and masochistic vibes. Val is determined to get Chaz past his limits and then send his boy away, done with him for good.
Val is a moody, brooding Dom who is miserable after the love of his life, Chaz, safeworded unnecessarily during a scene. Demolishing all of Val’s trust in a single word, he ended his relationship with Chaz on the spot. It’s been months, and Val’s friend Bailey has had enough, so he sends Val to Bailey’s lake house for the weekend, where he finds a bound, gagged Chaz hanging from a St. Andrew’s cross. Can the two find their way back to each other?
Time Out isn’t a novella, as it is comprised of a setup, a completion, and a single scene. Super short in length, it’s a quick half hour or less read. That said, the scene itself is seriously hot, but I have issues with the setup itself. Chaz is bound and gagged, yet left completely alone in a lake house where Val isn’t?? My initial response to this realization was horror, and it hasn’t dissipated in the days since I read this. Why would an author who is known for stellar BDSM not at least mention failsafes like Bailey or another Dom hiding somewhere on site to ensure the sub’s safety prior to Val’s arrival? Moving on…
Val’s mindset concerned me greatly at first. His anger was palpable, and anyone who plays knows that there are one basic tenet - safe, sane, and consensual, more recently modified to be RACK, Risk-Aware Consensual Kink. This infers that if you’re not in the right mindset, you don’t play, because you’re dangerous to your sub. Val was visibly angry, both in speech and in the mindset as portrayed by the author, so I cringed initially. There’s a good deal of play where the author leaves that mindset in play.
Eventually Val’s mental commentary then softened to show that he’s still in love with his mouthy sub and his actions then reflect such, at which point the entire scene changes, Chaz gets an opportunity to speak, and the whole mood shifts. At that point, I relaxed somewhat and got more into the scene, but I was still slightly on edge for the remainder of the book.
As far as chemistry goes, it’s hot - seriously hot! There isn’t much plot in something this short - it’s an erotic encounter through and through, told strictly from Val’s point of view. Because of the issues outlined above, I simply cannot rate this higher than three stars. This is not the caliber of writing I’m used to from this author.
When his sub Chaz safe worded, Val felt as if life had ended. "Time. You need time and I'm giving it to you," his friend told him. Being offered his best friend Bailey's lake house after his life fell apart seemed to be what Val needed. Alone and miserable, and frustrating even his friends, he took their advice and made the move to relax and recover.
"I'm going to twist you up and turn you inside out."
Being set up by Bailey, Chaz found himself on a St. Andrew's cross, gagged and bound and waiting. Knowing his Dom Val was still angry terrified him. Having Val still want him was like coming home.
This was his game. His rules. His revenge.
Val's only intention on seeing Chaz again was revenge. He wanted to hurt Chaz as he was hurting. He needed pushed the limits to see if it was still all worth it. This last scene was going to be the remaking or breaking of Val and Chaz.
I have to say, nobody does BDSM like Sean Michael. NOBODY.
In the middle of a scene, Val's sub, Chaz safe-worded out. Seemingly for no reason. Chaz ran. Val's world fell apart. After a couple of months, Val's friend, Bailey offers his lake house as a getaway for the weekend. Feeling miserable, he decides to take Bailey up on his offer and go relax.
Once he arrives, he finds he's been set up by his friend. He finds Chaz strapped to a St. Andrew's cross waiting for him. Chaz realizes the set up when Val is still very angry with him. Val intends to take his revenge on Chaz, but finds his feelings for Chaz are much more than he ever knew. Chaz tried to leave, but Val wants to work it out. Does Chaz still want him?? Can Val convince him to stay and talk?
I enjoyed this quick romp! It was short, to the point, and hot! I loved how the guys finally let out their issues and really talked about what they felt and what they wanted from each other! Sean Michael has a way with words and it showed in this short story! Time Out is a very alluring and entertaining read!

~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads Review Team~ This book was super short, I would have loved to have a longer book. I wanted to see what happened prior to this, I wanted to see the scene that made Chaz safeword. I wanted to see how their relationship was prior. Don’t get me wrong for being super short it was packed with hotness, I just wanted more Chaz and Val. Characters: well written Sex: yes Religious: no Would I recommend to others: yes More than one book in the series: no Genre: M/M Romance Would I read more by this author: yes ~Wicked Reads Review Team~
Chaz safe worded in the middle of a scene because he was feeling neglected. Val was pissed that Chaz lied and used his Safeword instead of communicating with him. Not able to trust that Chaz wouldn't do it again and still being angry Val broke it off.
Months later Val is moping around like a bear with a thorn in his paw. His friend offers him the use of his cabin for the weekend to get away from everything and just be. Val decides to take him up on the offer, because if he's away by himself he doesn't have to answer and questions about his dark mood.
Little does Val know, he has been setup. Chaz is wait for him at the cabin, ball gagged and tied to a St Andrew's cross. Val is going to use the night ahead for one last scene with Chaz and maybe get a little closure or revenge in the process.
This book was great. You can read it in one sitting. Super hot! There is a little angst, but it works in the story and never becomes whiny. The book moves along quickly and the scenes are smoking hot. I needed a cigarette after I read it and I don't even smoke.
