Yes, Roya

Rate this book
Wylie Kogan is an aspiring artist, stumping for work in 1963 California (think Mad Men, but with palm trees). When a fawning fan letter grants him access to his cartoonist hero, the celebrated Joseph Ahlstrom, he's quick to take advantage of a proffered portfolio review... but winds up learning more than he ever wanted to about Joe when he stumbles across some of his idol's illicit fetish art.

His hasty, ill-considered theft of a drawing triggers a series of events he never planned on... most of which involve Joseph's imposing and resolute partner, Roya.

Yes, Roya is a 135-page graphic novel m/f/m femdom story, with ghost green on art, C. Spike Trotman on story chores, and kinomatika handling the cover.

Read this in one sitting last night. So good. I love the art style and the story, beautiful and touching. This is loving depiction of submission/Dominance and polyamorous relationships and queerness. This is what I mean when I say I want more queer Romance/Erotica.

Whew!

I just finished my smoke. Time to clean up the mess. ;)

In all serious, though, Yes, Roya was something of a revelation. I feel like I have been waiting my whole life for this story. It is the erotica I have been craving; it is everything I desire in real life, everything I have experienced in a piece here and a piece there but never as a whole; it is arousing, loving, brave, sexy, caring, submissive & dominant, defiant; it makes me proud to be bisexual, actually. And that is quite an affirming thing.

The erotica was almost top tier, but the story sucked.

I wanted to love Roya; I mean, she’s a dom in the 1960’s with two bi boy subs. But she’s manipulative and perpetuates the stereotypes that keep her using a pen name. Not very girl boss imo.

Joe and Wylie were both pretty bland personality wise. I wish the writer did more with them to flesh out their characters while wanting to serve Roya.

Also, the art was just meh. It should’ve been more retro to match the timeframe.

The concept was there, but I think this would’ve been better set in modern day from Roya’s perspective within the current writing industry.

WOW!!! This was EXACTLY what I needed. Not just hot, well-drawn polyamorous femdom porn but ALSO a really cute story to go with it, and one of my personal favorite tropes (cold dominant character gets very gentle while comforting their sub) showing up just at the perfect time to make me squeal with joy. And feminism??????????????????????? #girlboss #getthatbag #steponmeninheels

To get more into the sex itself first, I was impressed by the amount of positions the writers came up with-- I'm so used to cis/het porn that is basically just a game of Stick In Hole-- the angles and paneling decisions surrounding the porn, and especially those lovely peens. I honestly was reading this admiring how beautifully the peens were drawn. You know it's good porn when you're getting all heart-eyed over the dicks!

But I mentioned a plot and I will tell you more about it. I honestly picked this up based on the polyamorous bisexual femdom action, and while I was happily satisfied with that alone, I was delighted to see that there was a whole STORY around the sex! It engages 1960s politics, cartooning philosophy, self-worth, all kinds of fun stuff. I can honestly say that it's not just good porn but a good story. I'm not a historical fiction person at all, really, but I LOVED this and I loved the use of color and fashion to describe the setting without drowning me in exposition. Gorgeous!

AND there is actual relevance to Roya's experience as a woman of color in comics and it makes for some great themes. I really don't need my porn to be in any way explicitly concerned with social justice, so it was a wonderful surprise to also find that the comic was extremely self-aware in a way that never detracted from the spice. Just adding great stuff onto the already great porn.

SO: highly recommend if you're at all curious about the premise. This one was a direct sounds incredible -> is incredible -> basking in incredible book feels journey for me and I am SO happy about it. Genuinely just what I needed right now. Augh! So so so happy and just wish I had a whole stack of unread Iron Circus porn beside me to keep on reading!

After writing a letter to famous cartoonist Joseph Ahlstrom, 19-year old Wylie is both thrilled and nervous to get an invitation from Joe to review Wylie's portfolio.

Meeting Joseph (Joe) leads to Wylie discovering truths about Joseph, himself, and the v. mysterious Roya...

Since I'm already a big fan of Iron Circus' Smut Peddler erotic graphic novels anthologies, I jumped at the chance to back the Kickstarter for this project.

What I liked

+ The main story

The set-up deffo pinged me: an F/M/M story that was about femdom and occurred in the early 1960s. THEN, I found out Roya was a WOC and I was all SIGN ME UP! However, the actual plot was about Wylie working through some realizations about himself and figuring out that there are many ways for people to be happy.

+ The Art

Emilee Denich's drawings are greatness. Sadly, only the front and back covers are in colour.

+ The sex

It's printed by Iron Circus so trust me when I tell you that all the naked times scenes are so scorching that you might end up googly-eyed. Basically, any combo of M/F/M that can happen, well, happens. >:)

An argument could be made that Wylie was too easily seduced by Roya and Joe. Personally, I don't see the point on discussing that since it's rather clear how lost Wylie feels about life in general.

Although it is wrapped around the concept of Roya ordering Joe and Wylie around in bed, the kink emphasis is on D/s over BDSM. There are no toys and, except for a fantasy sequence, no one wears any fetish-y clothing.

What I didn't like

-The villain

At one point in the story, Wylie's professional life gets complicated due to one character who has a srs bizness vendetta against Joe. Eventually, we do find out the villain's reason and, despite the fact that it made sense, I kinda went 'meh'.

- Some aspects about Roya's characterization

I like that she was a WOC and that there was a lot more to her story than I originally thought. She gives a monologue at one point in the story that made me go "huh, I hadn't thought about that".

OTOH, it bugged me that, aside from seeing her reactions in different situations (aroused, angry, protective, understanding), there's not one moment where she's sad or excessively happy. Her cool detachment was a little too much for me. It could be interpreted, I guess, that there's only so much about her shown because the only POV in the whole story is Wylie's.

What's funny is that I don't feel the same way about Joe even though, looking back, we don't get to know much about him either. His complacency might annoy some people (he's happy af being submissive to Roya and doesn't really question her at any point in the story), but it didn't rattle me.

TL;DR: This is an erotic graphic novel about femdom, an M/F/M relationship, and some good art. It's true that there are some things that could've been developed better. HOWEVER, there are some deeper themes in between the sexy times and the novel is highly original. This gets a YUP from me. :D!

Holy fuck.

So I wanted to read this for over a year, forgot that I had backed the kickstarter for it, and then was digging through my DRM-free PDFs (mostly comics from kickstarter and humble bundle) and just consumed all these Spike Trotman works over the last two days, leaving what in hindsight might have been the best for last.

Because, wow, I knew it was gonna be kinky and sexy, but it was also romantic and had a great story arc, and was period appropriate without being unseemly.

Basically Wylie, Roya and Joe are really interesting, and it's almost a shame we didn't get a longer book to know them all in because I would definitely have read something twice or three times the length of this, just to stay inside their heads. But really, this was a story, this was Wylie's story and it wrapped up so well (pun intended) so I'm just glad I finally read it.

Wow. Just wow.

The porn is lovely, of course, but what really moved me in this graphic novel is the supportive tenderness of the relationship between its three main characters. I also appreciated the gradual development of the meta-argument concerning the politics of authorship in the comics industry, and the conclusion presented by the last two pages is nothing short of brilliant. The delicious icing on the cake of Spike Trotman's fabulous writing is that Emilee Denich's artwork is truly a pleasure to behold.

I picked this up after reading the review on Oh Joy Sex Toy (link NSFW, but then, so is the book, heh). And, whoa - it definitely lives up to Moen's praise. Frankly, it's as much romance as it is pornography, effectively engaging the emotions as well as the gonads; you really feel for poor Wylie, in thoroughly over his head and yet determined to prove his worth, professionally and sexually.

So, it works emotionally, it works physically (boy howdy, does it). Me being me, however, I of course have to think through the story and its implications, and that's where Yes, Roya's pornographic sensibilities become a liability. Pornography, to paraphrase Neil Gaiman, is defined in part by its lack of consequences - no STDs, no babies, no traumatic experiences, no social repercussions. What's frustrating is that Yes, Roya is clearly trying to be more than that - there's some very intelligent examination of the social context of the 1960s, the limitations of gender and race, the repercussions of living an unconventional lifestyle, and the advantages of keeping one's true feelings and identity hidden while nonetheless subtly coding art to introduce unusual dynamics. But ultimately, I wanted more of that - more context of Wylie's life, more about Joe and Roya's social life outside of Wylie (presumably they have likeminded or at least accepting friends?), more indicators of the social rules that our three protagonists are upending, and the consequences they must accept. Depicting more of Wylie's life outside of his romantic interests would have been particularly illuminating, and given the ending a little more dramatic punch - as well as perhaps highlighting exactly how vulnerable he makes himself.

Even with my complaints, however, this is a hell of a read - kinky, erotic, beautifully written and drawn, and crazy hot. Well worth checking out and admiring even if femdom threesomes aren't your thing.

i mean it WAS pretty hot lol. a hot domme & also TWO bi guys? — what more could a man want? there were also some nice throw-in conversations around the problems faced by marginalised creators in the comics industry (let's be real it's literally any industry in the world). just wanted a bit more fleshed out characters but ig that's too much to ask for in a 150 page comic.

i was actually looking for comics with bi men to send to my bi cousin lmao. i mean, i sure won't be sending this to him now but like, i got something out of it so it's a win for me!

OK so I knew this was an "erotic comic" but lolol to me thinking I knew what that was going to entail. This is full-on full-frontal free-for-all boning, and I was like um whoah.

It's really good! It's a speecy-spicy story and I had fun reading it. Also C. Spike Trotman is so cool and smart you should follow her on Twitter.

The artwork was retro. The storyline though was a bit uncomfortable, established couple looking for a 3rd. He's young and the power dynamics just idk didn't sit right with me, it almost felt predatory. He was like a pet which might have been the point, but like I said didn't love that part. Roya is dealing with sexism and racism and making decisions to keep her "safe". I think the money was her financial security. Joe was just willing to serve. In some ways it addresses sexual liberation, through kink, art, and sex. It was taboo then and still is now.

A young cartoonist seeks out a mentor for his cartooning career but finds himself being schooled in a whole different way of life instead.

It's sexually explicit and fun, with a little dramatic story thrown in to boot. Set in the 1960s, I do feel the story sidesteps a lot of racial issues that should play a bigger part, but it's obviously going for something else as it centers itself on the white male lead's coming of age.

The last page really makes me want to rewatch the similar but much better Professor Marston and the Wonder Women.

February 2023 reread
Past Tracey is eating her words. This is a favorite. This story has stayed with me over the years, and I am always quick to bring it up for a recommendation. I was gifted the color edition for my birthday and quickly devoured it. Do I wish there was more of a story to read? Yes, because it's so well written and I adore the characters. For the time being, I'll just reread this until it's imprinted onto my brain.

January 2020 read
Damn, was this a hot read. I loved the artwork most of all. The plot itself is interesting but the book is not long enough for it to feel fully developed. That is the only thing stopping me from shelving it as a favorite.

I would love to read more about Roya and her boys. The sex scenes were beautifully drawn and made me blush. The poly relationship was a breath a fresh air, since none of the drama was between the partners. Everyone was consensual and open and honest about their feelings, and I was beyond delighted. Though jealousy and pettiness can rear their ugly heads in relationships, I'm glad those tropes were not used in this novel.

Set in the 1960's,
William is an aspiring artist who finally gets to meet his idol. Then he meets Roya, his idol's partner and things get...interesting.

Poly, Dom, and Queer relationships are not often found in a lot of fiction, particularly together, but its here and it is very, very spicy. While I am not a fan of Dom, Trotman let me see its appeal.
The artwork is very well done and the relationship, I wanted to see more of it, but this is basically 3 people going at it like rabbits and C. Spike Trotman leaves NOTHING to the imagination.

A reddit recommendation lead/led me here.

I love my femdom with affection. Roya wasn't affectionate. Wylie+Joe were more affectionate towards each other.

The age gap also killed it for me. Right here and now if a 19 year old, gay, straight, bi etc was to shack up, leave everything that they had behind for an older, established couple it reeks of grooming. Note that Wylie didn't have friends/family/a support system with him and by the end of the story even the prejudiced landlord he lives under kicks him out which in itself is basically isolation.

Anyway, wasn't a fan of the storyline, the age gap, the dependency that Wylie in the grand scheme of things will end up having with the couple and of Roya.

Just great!

I read this in a single sitting.

This graphic novel is beautifully drawn, both literally and figuratively. Its polyamorous interracial Dom/sub MMF relationship (whew!) is positively and, dare I say, realistically portrayed. Lots of graphic sex here, so stay clear if that's likely to bother you. Otherwise, very recommended.

erotica: bisexual, poly, femdom, hot, hot, hot

Unexpectedly sweet story about Wylie being adopted as another of Roya's submissive, while Wylie is learning how to break into the comics industry, while Joe gets to teach Wylie how to please Roya (and if he does good, he gets a treat too!) Quick shoutout to the artist drawing some really good lookin dick!

No choice but to read and obey. Yes, Roya!
