Shane is book five in the Undercover Bear series. It is by Terra Wolf and Meredith Clarke. It is stated that this can be read as a stand alone but it is obvious that there was quite a bit of back story from the previous books. There was enough information given to make this work but perhaps I might have enjoyed it a bit more if I had read the previous books. My opinion, though, is that this one didn’t really work for me. I found it to be disjointed and just didn’t enjoy it at all. Even the sexy scene didn’t work for me.
Officer Shane McAbbot is a bear shifter and works for the Portland Police Dept. Shifter bodies have begun to turn up in Portland, drained of all their blood. Evidence ties them to the brand new shifter hospital, United Hospital of Portland. Not to mention the many complaints that have been coming in regarding patients experiences while at the hospital. The only way to investigate is to go in as a patient. Shane is elected for the job but needs someone to pose as his wife to be at his side.
Lydia Santiago is the sister of Shane’s co-worker. She’s between jobs. She’s also a shifter but her brother is still constantly trying to protect her. With no other options Lydia is asked to pose as Shane’s wife in the under cover operation.
“I needed to finally prove to Marco and my family that I could be strong. That I wasn’t something that needed protection.”
Shane and Lydia connect immediately and it doesn’t take long for them to realize there is more to what is happening between them than just chemistry. They are true mates. Still, they need to concentrate on the mission before more dead bodies turn up.
This was really short so I realize that the authors were trying to fit everything in but the timeline just didn’t make sense. And I found the actions of the two main characters completely unbelievable. I’ve read Meredith Clarke’s books before and enjoyed them so I am hoping that this is just an isolated case. In any event, this one just didn’t work for me.
This book would have been better if it didn't feel like the story skipped ahead. I mean they have sex the first night they're under the same roof and the next day he's thinking that after only a few weeks together that he's in love with her. Also when they find the first body they are suspicious of the hospital but don't know for sure yet when they find the second one they know it's definitely the hospital. The concept of the story was a really good one and it probably would have been an awesome book if it were longer. Shane McAbott is a bear shifter and a detective in the Portland police department. His team just finished up a big case and they're dealing with all the paperwork. He receives a call from his friend, Gio, who is a tiger shifter and a detective in Seattle and he's concerned about the new shifter hospital in Portland. Gio was shot and taken to the shifter hospital and it's been a few weeks and he's still not completely healed which is unusual because shifters heal quickly. Shane is also concerned because he knows how quickly shifters heal so he tells his supervisor about the situation. Shortly after that the dead body of a shifter is discovered in an alley and Shane and his team believe the hospital has something to do with it. Lydia is a bear shifter and her older brother, Marco is a detective who works with Shane and he's always been overly protective of her. She lost her job when her boss who was the subject of an investigation was arrested. Shane and his team come up with a plan to go undercover and infiltrate the hospital to find out if they are experimenting on shifters. Shane and Lydia are going to pretend to be husband and wife and after their cover is established he will get himself admitted to the hospital so he can look into it.
I received this for a honest review. I just love this series.
Gio had told Shane about how he suspected there was something going on at United Hospital of Portland. There seemed to be something shady when it came to the hospital treating shifters. It was not long until they discovered that a private company called Purest Inc. had their hands in this. Bodies of shifters were being found and they must go undercover to find out what is going on.
Lydia was a feisty bear shifter. Her brother Marco felt the need to protect her. So when Shane had suggested that Lydia go undercover with him at the hospital Marco was not to happy to have his sister involved.
Lydia had crush on Shane. It was like their two bears had connected and recognized each other as mates. They are getting close as the days get closer for them to go undercover.
Danger is around the cover. Lydia knows if she does not get help soon that Shane could be in some serious trouble. She must do what ever it takes to help her mate. There is a doctor or doctors involved in some shady dealings with the hospital. Will they find out which ones they can trust? Will they put their trust in the wrong person? Can Lydia get help in time?
Such a great story. Often times you see where you have shifter with human for mates. Here it is Shifter with Shifter, which I found nice since they know what the others feels and go through.
Loved how it picks up from where the previous ones ended! It has a great plot, action, evil doctors that work for a large Incorporation that hate shifters? There's passion, steamy hot romance with awesome characters, and it holds your attention from beginning to end? Highly recommended series and keep them coming .
Purist is still alive and well...just how widespread they are no one knows. It could take forever, and to many dead shifters, to take them apart one location at a time.
Just finished undercover beat 5 & 6 but would suggest you get a better proof reader. I fill in the spots that don't make sense. Really loved the series.
Portland PD Bear shifter Shane McAbbot must go undercover at a hospital because something shady and disturbing is definitely going on there, once shifter bodies are being discovered. His good friend Geo who helped them before has contacted him with disturbing news. He recruits one of his team member's fiesty sister for their undercover op. She is also a bear Shifter. He had forgotten how hot she is.
Lydia Santiago is tired of everyone always trying to protect her. Her brother Marco who is a Portland PD agent is very overprotected. Her best friend contacts her and expresses her concern about her mate Geo. He is having a longer time of healing and she is concerned about the hospital where he stayed in Portland. Something just dies not sit right. Now her brother and his team is asking her to go undercover with them.
These two are hot and passionate. Good short story, but kind of ran out of gas at the end. I wanted more of an epilogue that would wrap it all up nicely and that did not happen.
Lydia lost her job is going stir crazy with nothing to keep her busy. Her friend Natasha calls, because when Natasha's husband Gio was treated at the new Shifter Hospital, something was done to him. It's been weeks and he hasn't healed. He thinks thecHospital did something to him that interferes with his advanced healing capabilities. Natasha wants Lydia to get her brother, Marco(a cop with the Portland Police), to look into it. Before Lydia can say anything to Marco, he and fellow cop, Shane, are involved in a case about shifters being found dead, drained of their blood, and all the bodies are linked to the hospital. Shane and Lydia go undercover as a married couple. Shane goes to the hospital for treatment, as a way to check out what is happening there. They need to find out who is harming shifters and put a stop to it. This was a quick read. I loved Lydia. She is a strong tough bear shifter, but being a girl, her dad and brother always over protected her, and even now when she is an adult. Shane sees her as strong, and very beautiful. He fell hard and fast for her.
There is something going on at the shifter hospital and Shane is ready to investigate. He needs to go undercover and having a wife would really help so Lydia is asked to help out. They are both bear shifters,
Shane is a cop and doesn't fear much. When his friend indicates there is a real threat to other shifters, he is ready to put himself in danger to find out what is happening. His friend's sister is a good candidate for a fake wife. Lydia is kind of bored and tired of being protected by the men in her family. She jumps at the chance to take on this kind of role. Neither expected to find themselves in danger of falling in love.
I liked the story and characters. It is a pretty quick read and the story moves fast. There is not a lot of buildup to the relationship. I would have liked a little bit more of a resolution to what was happening at the hospital but I guess she didn't want to have too much closure since the series continues.
Undercover Bear: Shane (Undercover Bear: Portland, #1) by Tarra Wolf and Meredith Clarke
Tarra and Meredith take us to Portland. Where a special crew of bear shifters protect all, even those that don't like shifters. That is until they step across the line and do harm.
Loving the Portland Undercover Bears. Can't wait to read more about them.
Action, humor, and romance in a quick and enjoyable read. I was a little lost on a few things then I realized this book was part of a series, but it still made sense to me without reading the others. I was given a free ARC copy of this story in exchange for an honest review
