This omnibus edition includes the first four books in the Tales from the Land of Ononokin series. You'll get wizards, vampires, werewolves, dwarves, elves, gnomes, orcs, ogres, giants, gorgans, humans, trolls, zombies, and more... and it's all set in a fantastical world that will keep you giggling for weeks.
Book one: 'A Quest of Undoing'
Follow Master Xebdigon Whizzfiddle as he struggles to complete a nearly impossible quest in only 30 days. He must help an enormous dwarf, an unattractive elf, a knight who is afraid of his own shadow, a lizard who is launching a nudie magazine, and a squashed-down giant who believes he is a wizard. Failure will cost Whizzfiddle his guild membership, but success may land him in the Afterlife! Fortunately booze is his magical power source, so at least he'll be mentally befuddled during the entire ordeal.
Book two: 'The Full Moon Event'
Paulie Vergen is a Vampire who went through the daily grind of life until a fateful day when a newly infected Werewolf landed on his doorstep. Now Paulie has to help the poor fellow navigate through the Underworld in order to find the help that he needs
Book three: 'Bob the Zombie'
Bob is a zombie who was just going about his business when a band of thieves stole his hand so that they could make a batch of Elfagra in the Upperworld. While it's bad enough that they've stolen Bob's hand for such a purpose, it comes to the Zombie's attention that if they use the wrong technique it could cause a cosmic rift that will spell the real death of Bob...not just the drawn out one that's part of being a Zombie.
Book four: 'Gappy's Gadgets'
Gappy Whirligig is an industrious Gnome who has yet to reach the Age of Tinkering. In a flash, Gappy's life flips upside down, leaving him to make the decision to either strike out on his own or become a 42-year-old foster child. Gappy demonstrates his industrious spirit as he leaves Hubintegler's rules and regulations behind and instead seeks to make his mark in the seedy town of Planoontik.
John P. Logsdon is a former game designer, producer, and software engineer who shamelessly digs into the deep recesses of his mind to bring forth oddball characters and hilarious plots. He writes primarily in fantasy, urban fantasy, and science fiction, but he's also dabbled in cozy mystery from time to time. To see John's vast library of laughs, visit www.johnplogsdon.com.
I absolutely love the books about the Land of Ononokin.
There are many characters within all of the stories who are great but Xebdigon Whizzfiddle the Wizard is the main character for the Quest of Undoing, Paulie Vergen the unconventional vampire leads the Full Moon Event, Bob the depressed Zombie is the hero of Bob the Zombie and Gappy Whirligig the Gnome, who is considered to be getting ahead of himself, is the industrious lead for Gappy's Gadgets.
If you fancy stories about a land with Wizards, Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies, Gnomes and all sorts of other supernatural races that will make you laugh then give this book a go. I have personally recommended to members of my family who have loved it too :-)
A fun casual fantasy story. The world comes to life as the story unfolds and the rules of the society come in to play. Widely differing characters spread across the stories and keep you going. I wouldn't exactly compare it to Pratchet but definitely a similar style to character and world. I enjoyed that is was a genuinely new take on a lot of fantasy themes but still follows the traditions it is obviously referencing, it is amusing. It i a worthy addition to your reading list that may not be your favorite book but you will enjoy it and be glad you read it or listened to it. The narration is pretty good on the audiobook. Each book is a different setting in the world and a different type of characters but they meet each other and the stories blend well. I like that there is a tech world and a magic world and they have some connections.
So I maybe being harsh with a 3 star review but I was hoping for more. It was sold as the books to read if you love Terry Pratchett so I had high hopes.
If not for that I might have scored it higher. In places it made me chuckle quietly but never out loud and not for long. Most of the time it was more of an "I can see what you're doing there" and it was a good effort to make me laugh but it was just too obvious a dig at our society and Mr Practchett did it first and did it better.
Some of the stories are better than the others and it is worth a read if you want a light hearted poke at society from the angle of another world.
A pleasant and lighthearted compilation of stories from the land of Ononokin Humorous with your fantasy trope of magic and gnomes werewolves etc but also with technology (Sci-fi?) twists of portals and phones and etc. The story makes good use of both worlds and puts on a good story with some satire sprinkled in. Found the first story the funniest but still enjoyed all of them
What an interesting take on wizards, vampires (nasty mosquitoes) wolves, ogres, and many other creatures. Portals to the underworld and the moral of almost every book is being nice eventually pays off. Fun fantasy books.
So much fun reading in one book! I love the land of Ononokin. The stories, although short, flesh out the characters and the world around them. The author will sometimes go for the more obvious jokes, but I like that the situations the main characters find themselves in are humorous while not following typical tropes. I mean, who doesn't love the fact that when vampires visit 'our' world, they turn into mosquitoes? Definitely recommend, and if you are an audio fan, four books, one credit and the narrator is great
Very enjoyable set of books, looking forward to the 2nd set. Very reminiscent of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. My only criticism, is that I feel that the books are in the wrong order as their main character appear to be introduced in the previous book, then the book their in covers a period prior to the previous book.
I was given this Audible book 1-4 and liked it Soo much I wanted to review it for others. If you want a enjoyable Lighthearted group of story you can not go wrong listening to this book bundle!! The characters are quite interesting and enjoyable and the Narrator did a good job.
I really enjoyed the different perspective on the fantasy romp, especially the first book. It's not quite on a par with Terry Pratchett but it's competent. The last couple of books drag a bit though, lacking spark.
The 4 book set now out has the first 4 books, #1 Quest of Undoing #2 The Full Moon Event #3 Bob the Zombie #4 Gappy's Gadgets {the other not included is #5 The Kidnapped Prince which just became available to read on my device.} There are actually 2 writers, both with multiple, strange personalities. Worth the read, so much so that I have the 4 books separate but it's easier on my app to read straight through, so that's how and why I went thru them again.
This is the first set of books I have read by John P. Logsdon, it is based in the fantasy world of Ononokin, there are 4 stories in the series, it is a brilliant comedy series.
