Spinning directly out of the epic events of DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1, the Fastest Man Alive finds himself at the center of a DC Universe at a crossroads.
WARNING: Do NOT read this issue until after you read DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1!
This was the one I read directly after I finished DC Universe: Rebirth, so I was still on a high when I opened this up. Anyway, I thought this was a good issue, and a great follow-up to Rebirth!
There isn't much more to be learned, but you see what was going on with Barry directly before the events in Rebirth, and what he does immediately after.
Even if it isn't incredibly informative, it does set a good tone for future Flash issues, and it made me want to continue on with this particular title.
Thank you to my friend, Josh for gifting me a copy of this one, as well! In fact, he hooked me up with a bunch of this Rebirth stuff!
This issue extends scenes that happened in DC universe: Rebirth, it even follows up with Barry meeting up with Batman. The scene in DC Rebirth was extended in its own way for dramatic effect, which was a lot better, but this issue lost nothing because it's more about what follows. It definitely needs to be read after DC Rebirth, I can't stress that enough. : ) This issue can also be classified like other Rebirth titles as a type of epilogue or prologue, but the writing was so well done it was a good read. I was actually pleasantly surprised with the writing, I haven't enjoyed Flash this much since Geoff Johns's run.
Really good, but I wish Godspeed had made an actual apperence. A lot of these one shots have been really slow, which I get that they're setting up the story for the main line titles, but they could be a little more exciting for my tastes.
Happy to discover the flash was continuing the story from the rebirth oneshot. The Watchmen angle is super interesting and cannot wait for the story to be in full motion. I think the next clues with be with a Justice League book but I'm sold and will happily board the train. The Flash has always been my favourite DC character so it's awesome to see him at central point of the story. I'm worried about the pace of the comics but it's too early to tell.
Man, DC is on a roll with all these Rebirth issues. I've read every single one and I love them all. The Flash: Rebirth pushes forward the things that happened in DC Universe: Rebirth, showing and giving us more details about the '10 year gap' from Barry and Bruce's perspectives. Also, Godspeed. GOdspeed. GODSPEED. OMG. If you'll excuse me, I'm gonna cut this review short and do a happy dance in a corner of the room and fanboy over how cool Godspeed looks. And over that Comedian button again. Baiiii
The murder of a woman in front of her child sets Barry Allen down a path of bad memories. The entire situation reminds him of his own mother’s murder at the hands of Professor Zoom. But even as he just begins the investigation, Barry’s life changes as memories of a previous life come streaming back with the return of Barry’s former partner, Wally West. What does all of this mean for Barry’s future, not to mention the future of the DC Universe?
There’s a lot going on in this issue and Williamson handles it all pretty well. We have the obligatory recap of Flash’s origin, an extension of the events from DC Universe: Rebirth, and the introduction of new elements to pull readers into the regular series. I feel the most interesting parts were pulling the new Rebirth threads a little further. I love Wally West and am happy to see him back in some form in this new continuity. Looks like we’re going to follow him next to some iteration of the Titans group. Wally has always had a lot of heart for me and represents a true touchstone for the DCU, so I was very sad when he was left on the scrap heap for the New 52. I actually mourned a lot of the lost legacy during that era and I’m hoping Geoff Johns and everyone else brings that back through Rebirth. Also, the idea of Batman and the Flash working together on a forensics case seems like an amazing amount of fun and I can’t wait to see more of their investigation into the button and the remnants of Flashpoint.
Now I do enjoy a good murder mystery, so the new case on Barry’s plate is also very interesting, especially given the similarities to his own life and some other very particular circumstances around it all. This should prove interesting and give Barry some nice character hooks for this storyline.
The biggest downfall of the issue for me was the art. I really don’t feel that Di Giandomenico’s art is a good fit for this book. His figures are too angular and the facial features are harsh and ill-defined most times. The Flash has always been a bright and positive book in the DCU, and this artwork would fit better in something like the Spectre or Swamp Thing - something a bit darker and more supernatural. I’d love to see him do one of those, but just not this one.
Not a bad relaunch, but I’ll have to see how the regular series develops.
This takes place after (and before) the DC Universe: Rebirth comic but it's best to read tht first as to avoid any and all confusion.
In this comic we see Barry Allen working on a case that is quite similar to his mom's death. He starts seeing visions of Zoom and himself fighting Zoom. He plays this off as being part of stress related to dealing with the case.
While on a run, Barry gets another vision and soon realises it's not a vision and by remembering Wally, he pulls him [Wally] back into reality. From here on, Barry decides to develop a plan and find out what happened and who is behind all this.
Characters: Barry was a very determined character and it seems obvious that the people he cares about are his weakness. His POV makes for an interesting read but there's not really much to learn from a 28 page issue.
Likes: I loved the writing. Not boring, intriguing and made me want more. The art was amazing so props to Carmine Di Giandomenico. Still amazed by the colours on that streak though. I like this plot and I'm legit interested in seeing where they take this.
Overall Thoughts: I've only read two issues of this series so far but I'm loving how everything fits into a puzzle. I have a feeling that I'm about to get a lot deeper into the DC Universe. I'm looking forward to continuing this story in The Flash #1.
Nice book, but confusing in terms of the overall continuity. It picks up where Rebirth #1 left off, so you've got the whole revisited.
Now that I think back, I'd say it's more intriguing than confusing - and I guess that's something the first arc will resolve. We have got
A good read for sure, but it does not have the appeal that The New 52 Flash #1 did - that's just my personal opinion though. The Flash books always have the best of stories on average, so I'll be reading this title for sure.
We basically got a recap of DC Rebirth Special. It was a very pretty recap. And it had some touching moments and later it needled some of the elements of Rebirth Special forward a bit. A few promises being made as the character recollects his thoughts post-recap, and then ominous ending (which I thought was well played, despite being predictable.)

i was a bit worried that they just skipped the whole rebirth issue but they didn't and this flash and Batman investigating angle was pretty good to see but the book felt a bit rushed and nothing significant really happened so 3 stars
4 stars. I need to read all the Flash volumes I have now. This justotivated me to do it. As soon as I'm back from this business trip I'm going to try and knock those out asap so I can read the rest of what's out of this one.
I'm so excited to see where this is going. This is my first time reading the Flash but I've always loved his character in the animated movies and shows.

OK, now this one is complicated... In my Doomsday Clock review I already wrote about how much I hated the idea about Watchmen being used as a tool. As an excuse for another Crisis / Flashpoint something. In other words, as a way to reboot the universe again. Doomsday Clock proved that nobody really cared about Watchmen here. DC just wanted to get rid of the New 52 ASAP, so, they took Dr. Manhattan and... here comes DC Rebirth. But.
As much as I hated Doomsday Clock, for everybody else this development didn't feel that bad. And honestly, it pretty much saved The Flash. Remember what was wrong with The Flash: Rebirth? I mean the original The Flash: Rebirth mini-series, not The Flash from DC Rebirth universe. Barry was too old and tired, everybody had wives, annoying kids were everywhere... It was a mess. Felt more like a family reunion in real life (the ones everybody hates) than an interesting story. Now bang! Meet Dr. Manhattan , baby, and everything's just right. Characters are young and interesting, no annoying kids, the story feels fresh and interesting... Watchmen thing really worked here. Way better than the original Barry's return.
So... yes, they did kill Watchmen. But did the others gain from that? Yep. It's really nice to get fresh and enjoyable Flash again. It really is.
This was a really enjoyable read. Josh Williamson has an interesting technique for writing a Flash story that is very similar to other Flash stories, but also different at the same time. I know that sounds kind of silly, but when you slightly change the environment of Central City and add a few different dynamic characters. It can turn a played out plot line into a whole new story that sets the pace for the rest of the series. This run is great for old school Flash readers and new comers alike. It’s definitely worth a shot.
Yeah, this was alright. It got me way more pumped about what’s going to happen next, which is a good thing, but the issue itself was kinda bland. The best part was Barry pulling Wally out of the Speed Force, which I had just read in the Rebirth special so it didn’t have as much punch, but still a rad scene. That and Flash hanging out with Batman, because I always love when Batman shows up, no matter what. ❤️
This served not only as a great introduction to Flash for a new reader, but also provided a fun one-shot story, had incredible visuals (like the page with Wally on one side and Barry on the other), and was the most direct tie-in to the DC Universe one-shot. Easily my favorite of the Rebirth one-shots so far.
