With the prospect of war on the horizon, two rival packs must come together to solidify an uneasy truce.
Tessa LaCroix, alpha mistress of the Kumori pack, is too fiery and competent to be passed around like some decoration. So when her father sends her to the Nefari pack to become their alpha leader's mate, she's furious. More aggravating, Marrock is the worst kind of alpha: proud and unmoving, more animal than man. But her own feelings betray her as she comes to know the man beneath the beast and realizes the animal in her wants the animal in him.
Liam Marrock was perfectly happy running his pack without a strong huntress at his side. However, the prospect of a ceasefire with Kumori is too alluring to pass up. Unfortunately, it's not half as alluring as the headstrong spitfire now sharing his home, all the while cursing his name. But Tessa soon proves she's more trouble than she's worth, when her strong-willed attitude causes his packmates to test his authority. As tensions escalate and the truce is tested, Tessa's quest for independence may cost him his life.
Alliance is the first book in the Mated in Hell trilogy.
Tessa found the blood bathing the ground acrid. Samus, a Kumori hunter, was one of her own pack hunters and she'd known him well for two decades. He'd taught her many things, including the joys of the hunt and how to keep her wolf contained within. As her mother's deputy she'd had to defeat her to claim the role of full packmistress, the alpha female. But this kill was not her own and its smell sickened her. She'd find who killed him and how; after the body had gone cold, the only trace was the paw prints now left in the muddy ground, making answers that much harder to obtain. She'd never be able to commit the faintest smell remaining to memory, but perhaps her father, the alpha, might know of something they could do. The mounting frictions between packs always meant collateral damage. But this man had been her friend and a close friend of her father's. Her family had been at the helm of the Kumori shifters for generations. Now, the turf wars were changing the name of the game. She couldn't help but think what a nuisance it was, just when she needed to consolidate her position, second only to her father. Of course, thoughts like those only lead back to more guilt. It was no longer deniable, a war is coming.
On seeing the man cloaked in shadows in the council room, she couldn't fathom at first why she was standing bathed in a friend's blood as the elders and her alpha talked about her as if she weren't there. For Liam, restraint was necessary, and unleashing his violence was at other times needed. Seeing Tessa's raging heat in her blood shift from lust to rage was one of the latter times. Putting an elder no better than a vulture in his place was a time to let that slip a little. Although his use of the absinthe necessary to fuel such a rapidly flowing transformation would be seen as a waste, through unnecessary grand standing, by his own lead enforcers. Liam however saw an opportunity worth taking. Especially if it put that look in Tessa's eyes; the look of respect, appreciation and dare he say wanton for all he's capable of.
He knew she'd fight the desire and lust, but he also knew without a doubt that she appreciated the abilities of a wolf capable of great violence. Even if she fought the attraction he knew was there. If he played his cards just right, she'd be his. And oh what a glorious prize. Not just because her lineage was that of kings, but also her stature and the way his pulse responded to the things he saw in her eyes. As an avowed bachelor he knew his reputation and it seems he also knew more about why he was there. Just as well really, he'd never have found a woman willing to be part of this political ploy to amalgamate strengths through arranged mating bonds as anything resembling respectable. Her rejection to his mind just made her all the more hotter. Still, he hoped she'd come around in time, but if the glares directed around the room were anything to go by, then perhaps not.
Elias is the third pack leader, the Malvati’s. He relishes the suffering and the deaths. For him the slower and bloodier the better. At his teeth and claws, fists and legs, or at his command; the losses of both Kumori's and Nefari's keep mounting up. But being objectified as a piece of property to trade in agreements is the last thing Tessa could've imagined possible. Especially after the blood, sweat and tears she'd shed fighting for the rank she'd achieved among the Kumori, her family. Liam never thought he'd put an end to his bachelor wandering, but he'd lost too many family and friends to not consider the importance of a coalition. If both packs are to accept it then the value of the trade needs to be commensurate with the parties making them. Just any old wolf and bitch bonding wouldn't seal the deal in the payments of blood and lives. He knew if anyone was worth the sacrifice and commitment that it'd be Tessa. Tessa couldn't deny there was an attraction and an instinct to touch and lick. She also knew deep down that if it meant no more of her pack would die, then it was her responsibility to ensure that any avenue for stopping further losses be pursued.
For the period of friction between the three packs vying for turf, albeit some merely wanting to retain their own turf, not to branch out, the distrust and suspicion had begun to run deep. For the Kumori's they'd been lead to believe, by none other than Liam himself, that the Nefari's were innocent of any blame in their losses. The death of Samus whilst Liam was on Kumori grounds made his word all that much harder to believe. Elias is believed to be the sole responsible party, and yet during her unveiling of her thoughts at the arrangement and the treaty it will cement, Liam admits to Elias being the half-brother he'd lost; among other relatives to these frictions. As Tessa plays out the unsaid components of the perceived betrayal by her alpha, her father, her suspicions lead her to the possible conclusion that perhaps her father was not betraying her; and is instead playing the wily commander sending off his trusted daughter in as a spy. Liam of course perceives Tessa's agreement despite her vehemence also as perhaps an attempt at sedition by the Kumori's.
Given the absence of a point-of-view from Elias's perspective its only possible to make assumptions about his end game. What this inevitably leads to though is the blatantly apparent distrust between any possible alliances. It cannot be helped but to imagine that irrespective of any signatures on a piece of paper titled Treaty, that unless the interpersonal dynamics are resolved, and in short order at that, then the two aligning packs may have been better off if no agreements were sought at all. For it is inescapable that as long as their attentions are so keenly zoned in on each other, and the unknown intentions, they might miss the bigger picture and become worse off than if they'd not tried at all. Working together to achieve a goal is only ever as successful as the efforts put toward it's achievement. The sad truth is that regardless of the personal level, the animals within are reacting as if the mate bond was real after all. The way the agreement has come about may at the end of the day, prevent what might of been possible if they'd not met under their current circumstance. Whilst they try to delineate the trust from the skepticism, and the lust from the attraction, they might be turning a blind eye to the greatest threat of all.
In this alternate world to the one that is our own, many many humans have been killed off by disease, starvation, and drought. Whilst at first this made things better for supes naturally tolerant to disease, the latter two epidemics mostly effected only supes disinclined to see humans as one of their prey. For lupine shifters their evolution had begun solving the problem of only being able to shift in rhythms associated with the moon. The discovery of the absinthe plant brought an answer to that predicament as it allowed transformation at will, when ever it is infused into their blood. As more and more shifters began chasing their next score, the rarity of the plant grew more and more. Along with other trade and barter the state of resources leads to conflict and friction.
The Kumori's have an advantage in that their turf contains one of the declining natural plantations of highly sought after stocks. The cost started escalating wildly the more it began to be used, and the places where it grows began to decline. Many lupines would likely see access to the plant as one of the motives for the increasing frictions. As Tessa and Liam head into the wild to complete the ritualised hunt of just them as their wolves and the biggest prey/predator they can work together to bring down and kill, its actually her pack's absinthe that's provided for the beginnings of finalising their bond. If they both could get out of each other's, and their own, ways long enough then they might be able to detect the beginnings of a burgeoning affection that might lead to love.
With its pack relations brimming with violence from both within and from outside, the need to collect adequate resources is pitting wolf against wolf. People hungry for power in the aftermath of unsteady times also put strain on the cohesion within the packs. With a purely supernatural cast the Mated in Hell Trilogy is set to be ideal for fans of urban fantasy. Tessa is at times a victim of the role that's been cast for her, a strong female alpha just trying to make the best of a horrible situation she'd never have foreseen coming. She's also much like any normal person who has her fair share of insecurities which at some points are bound to lead her to trouble. The foundation she built for herself with dedication and sacrifice has been ripped from under her feet; leaving her feeling as if she no longer knows who she can trust, and feeling betrayed by those she thought she could trust. Liam is less a victim and more a player. It comes across at face value that he may have used the current bad times to make a play for what he wants. Its undeniable that he loves his pack even if some make that hard to remember. Irrespective of intentions he's undoubtedly a strong leader. With multiple triangles of varying kinds its not always possible to truly know where anyone stands. Alliance has opened the door to the context behind the story, and I'm sure the next book in the series will show where those doors lead. A solid four stars with the potential for future books to upgrade it to five.
War is coming. Tessa gets mated to Marrock to forge an alliance between their two packs. Tessa is alpha herself defeating her own mother to become alpha female of the pack. When her father trades her, she is angry. Marrock thinks she is a spoiled little princess, Tessa thinks he is an alpha that just wants her as a prize and doesn’t realize her worth. They are both attracted to each other but they don’t trust each other. The biggest problem is they don’t communicate very well. Tessa inadvertently causes problems in his pack and has now made a deal with the devil and realizes she was wrong. She won’t confess and I really don’t blame her, she has already caused too many problems between Marrock and his pack. This story ends on a cliffhanger as she decides to try and take down the devil by herself.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review. Two headstrong dominate wolves are thrust into an uneasy alliance to help prevent bloodshed. I loved the premise of the book and the characters were feisty, dominate and sexy as heck. Their tension and chemistry was fun to read and really made the story. The story was enjoyable to read with all the twist, turns and mysteries. I definitely can't wait to read the next book and discover what happens next along with uncovering all the mysteries and finding answers to the questions that are floating around in my head.
Disappointed. Just a lot of he-said, she-said without much real discussion between the two leads. Practically no history provided regarding the packs and the idea that you would bring your arranged bride to your pack and not even introduce her to the pack is just laughable. There are just too many holes in this to make me want to keep reading.
Lots of tension between the two protagonists, which I love. The female lead got a little stupid at the end. I hate the "someone has threatened me but I can't tell anyone so I'll just suffer in silence" stuff. Just find that personally annoying. But I will read the next book.
***I was given an ARC for a true and honest review***
I really enjoyed the book but found myself wanting to slap Tessa and Marrock upside their heads. I was also shocked and saddened when I abruptly found myself at the last page of the book. I didn't want it to end so I can say with certainty that I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Tessa LaCroix is a proud, independent, strong-willed alpha female of the Kumori wolf shifters clan. To her dismay and anger she is given away to a rival packs alpha to seal an alliance. The meeting or at least glance at some of the members of the Nefari clan that same day doesn't seem to bode well for her. She is confused, angry, and scared. Going from the alpha female in her clan to nothing but something dumped in the alpha's sad old looking house she finds she has no place nor responsibilities to bring her a sense of belonging. She doesn't know who to trust here in foreign territory. Her anger and pride time and again undermine her mates authority with his pack. She refuses to listen and obey the things Marrock has told her. She doesn’t know or understand this packs politics but she's just not going to sit quietly around the house doing nothing.
Marrock is the alpha of the Nefari clan. His clan is a poorer one that is also losing members to death or defection to the enemy Malvati clan lead by Marrock's brother Elias. Marrock had his issues when he was a new young alpha when he became involved with a treacherous female from his clan. He suffers with doubt and worries that he might not be the alpha his people need. A number of his pack member's silently question his ability and fitness to be alpha of the clan. Tessa captivated Marrock at first sight. He saw in her a proud, strong, independent woman. On the verge of war Marrock needs this alliance but Tessa isn't making things easy.
Distrust, anger, and pride are only the tip of iceberg between these two strong and independent people. Numerous blow-ups and misunderstandings have lead Tessa to take a dangerous step which could mean the end of Marrock's leadership, and the lives of both their packs. Confused, angered and filled with grief Tessa must make a dangerous decision that will help or hurt both packs. Her life is in the balance as is any chance at making a place for herself with her new pack or elsewhere.
I can't wait for the next book in the series to see how things progress and what is or isn't in the future for Tessa and Marrock.
What happens when a fierce alpha mistress & an alpha male meet with the prospect of war between two rival packs meet? You will have to read this awesome book to find out!
Tessa never wanted to fall for a dominant man, but Liam is more than she can brush off. This book is well written, with love, hate, war violence, sex....you name it, this book has it! Any book that Rebecca Hamilton is involved in is always well written and this one does not disappoint. I can't wait to see what happens next in this series.
Tessa, the alpha female of the Kumori pack, is pushed into a mating of convenience to Liam, alpha of a rival pack, in order to create a truce. Although neither wants the mating, they go along with it because it's what's best for their packs. Tessa doesn't go lightly, though, and puts up a fight at every turn. She doesn't want to be mated to Liam, and she hates that she has to uproot her life and move to a strange house. But as they spend more time together, it gets harder to not consummate their mating. Will they be able to turn a mating of convenience into something more or will their differences get in the way.
This was a typical paranormal romance where the hero and heroine were pushed to mate. There's nothing very unique about the story and at times the heroine and hero were unlikable, but it was still an enjoyable read. Tessa was the character I had the most problems with, mainly because she acted immature for being the supposed alpha female. She made bad decisions because she was bitter about being forced to mate with Liam, and it showed that she didn't really care about doing what was best for her or Liam's pack. She was also often cranky and bitchy to Liam. It also bothered me that most of the time Liam and Tessa found excuses to keep away from each other. They constantly used misunderstandings and their pack politics to prevent them from realizing their feelings for each other, which was frustrating.
Overall, Alliance was a fun paranormal romance but I won't be rereading it anytime soon.
What happens when you merge two rival packs together without the consent of the female being given? A lot!! When it is said that Tessa is an alpha female, no one is kidding! She is so headstrong and independent that when she ends up in a new pack she refuses to sit in the back burner and takes things into her own hands. Liam is more open to this pairing than Tessa but when he sees what he has to work with it certainly tests his patience. Since the two are always butting heads, things are said and done without the other knowing and that right there is going to be their downfall! The attraction that they share is very strong but it is definitely not enough to get these two to work together. So will Tessa truly be Liam’s downfall? Will it cost lives to fix what they could have together? This was a very good beginning to an action filled angsty series and I really do recommend that you give this a go! You won’t be disappointed! I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review

Marrock and Tessa have entered in a mating for convenience, to help unite the two packs against a common enemy. It's not a easy mating. I don't know who I feel more sorry for in this. So many misunderstandings that could be solved with them being honest with each other. But then they don't trust each over even over the sexual tension. Aswel as having to deal with how to live with each other and not keep hurting each other. They have to deal with enemies in the pack. But also a betrayal even closer? What is going to happen? I got so caught up in this. The chemistry between these two that are thrown together is frustratingly obvious. The way it ended aswel. Wow!!! If feel anxiety for what could happen. Hope we don't have to wait too long for the next one.
I received a beta version of Alliance as a review copy from the authors. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. I liked the storyline and for me, the book started strong so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, I dislike when strong female characters are forced into Dom/sub relationships- in this case she becomes subjugated to give her pack a strong alliance partner. I found Liam completely unreasonable and a jerk. Tessa was an enforcer and alpha, yet she turned into a doormat, while I know other readers may view Tessa's sacrifice of self for the good of her pack as a noble plot line -- this series is not for me. Excellent and descriptive writing created a wonderful world, so don't let my bias against the characters determine your final choice to give this a chance... good writing, I simply didn't enjoy the character's situation.

Alliance by Katie de Long and coauthor Rebecca Hamilton, was a good book it kept me up all night reading. It was such a good book that I read the story twice.
This book is about two head strong pack leaders and how they learn to live and get along together. With the chance of war coming, two enemy packs must bring two packs together. That is a hard task when dealing with Tessa LaCroix and Liam Marrock , they seam to clash together when they come anywhere near each other. Alliance is the first book in the Mated in Hell trilogy. I am most definitely looking forward to reading the next book. I want to know what happens to Liam and Tessa.
Loved this story! It was a great start for a new series. I loved Tessa and Marrock. It was fun and frustrating to watch them each try to find a place in each other's lives. This book made me laugh, cry, happy and want to bang their heads together. I can't wait to see where their journey takes them and have some of my questions answered. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Tessa and Liam are both Alphas. As such, both are strong willed, stubborn people who have very differing opinions on how to run a pack. This is a good first book in a new series. There is action, suspense, romance, intrigue, and twists. The road to happiness is a twisty one. I especially enjoyed the interaction between the main characters, even when I was so frustrated I wanted to scream at them to get it together! I look forward to seeing what comes next in this series.
To save her pack she must give up everything, but she may also gain so much more. With the alliance of the two packs things should of gotten easier. But instead all there is are lies and deceit. Who can she trust and will she pick the right side.
There is violence and a few hot scenes, so I highly advise the book for adult readers only.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of the book.
Tessa really was in hell, every way she turned there was nothing she could do right.Liam doesn't know her secret. What will be do when he finds out.Tessa wants a life with Liam but it may not be possible. There is so much going on in this book, even when it ends you will be sorry.
Goodness, where to start. Being a pawn sucks, especially when, your family is involved. A tangled mess of emotional turmoil. The push and pull between Tessa and her place in her new pack is filled with conflict, unease, and being lost. Will they come together or divide from inside out?
This book didn't grab me. Not sure why but there was something missing that ingredient called excitement ? Or was it anticipation of what happens next. It was flat. The story was rather unbelievable in certain areas ... I kept saying are you kidding me? It just needs to be spiced up and change all the doubts with more realistic ones.
With the prospect of war on the horizon, two rival packs must come together to solidify an uneasy truce. The two main characters are headstrong and stubborn. They both push each other to the razors edge in this action packed book. I highly recommend it! Can't wait for the next book in this series.
Holy fricking cow this book pulled me in and didn't let me go, even at the end I want more! The characters and world building are well developed and made me actually think of real locations that would fit.
Writing is ok but the plot is just taming of the shrew with some fur and badly done S&M that feels icky and anti-woman. But taming of the shrew squicks me out and pisses me off, so.....
