Worth the Wait

Rate this book
Is he worth the heartbreak? At nearly forty, Julie isn't so sure she'll ever find a man who is, so she's vowed that all her big 4-0 decisions will have zip to do with relationships. A successful theater manager, she agrees to travel to North Carolina and help a friend put her erotic performance theater on its feet. Julie has always been curious and drawn to the BDSM world, and now she can safely explore that world in the environment she knows best. Desmond Hayes is the roofing contractor repairing their rundown theater building, but he's also a rigger, well-known in the BDSM world for his rope artistry. He's not just a top, though; he's a Dom whose unexpected quirks mesh too well with Julie's eccentric personality and awakens her submissive side. From the time he was born, Des has been fighting the odds against him. Because of that, he's kept his relationships inside the scene with clear boundaries. While Julie had almost given up on finding a person worth loving through better or worse-or pleasure and pain-Des never expected to receive that gift. He's not letting that treasure get away-no matter how much rope he has to use to bind her to him.

“So are you the reformed asshole who did the manipulating, or the recipient of the female version of it?” she asked. “Is that how you recognize the signs?”
“If I tell you that, I’ll ruin the fog of sexual mystery that clings to me.”
“I think you’re safe. It’s the carrot sticks that are keeping me enthralled.” She smiled and his own broadened.

***************************

Yet everything you're doing to me, it's so incredible, and so I wonder if I'm letting the decisions I've arrived at after so much careful thought derail the chance for something incredible, even if it is temporal. I'm not strong enough to handle my heart getting crushed, Des. I'm not. And everything about you says you're capable of crushing my heart. You're too much, too amazing, too…beyond anything I ever expected to be able to call mine, so I know it can't be right or real…"

Marcus, my all-time favorite M/M main character and one of Julie's best friends:

Thomas had once said that Marcus had Lucifer’s voice, a purring masculine timbre that could bring the deadest libido to life, male or female. She wasn’t immune, but she’d been exposed to it enough not to become brain dead from its influence. She sniffed.
“Typical Northerner. Assuming anyone in the South is an ignorant hick.”
“Hey, I married one of those hicks. I should know.”
She laughed. “He’d punch you in the gut for that.”
“Fortunately I have abs of steel.”
“To match your head of solid rock. How are you guys?”
“Ah, how I’ve missed your lovely ego strokes.” He chuckled, another weapon in his seduction arsenal he could wield with intent.

Apologies for not reviewing Worth the Wait in great detail. I'm just not terribly motivated to post long reviews these days. Besides, I can use my time to do other, more important things in my life, to be honest. So I'll be keeping it short and to the point.

Be that as it may, I really did enjoy Worth the Wait. Mainly because I felt the BDSM stuff was rather low-key and the entire book came off as wonderfully romantic. Also, Des was a very likable hero and since I read Rough Canvas years ago, I was hoping that Joey would be writing Julie's story. The erotic theater aspect was interesting and well-crafted. As a great bonus, readers will get to see Marcus and Thomas again. It goes without saying that I totally dig Marcus's out-of-this-world gorgeousness, his sharp and quick wit, his sense of humor, his swoon-worthy sexiness, and all the banter which are intertwined with plenty of love, protectiveness and care for his loved ones and those he considers family. He is and will always remain splendid and extraordinary in my eyes. What. A. Man. Marcus alone is worthy of picking up Worth the Wait. However, you must be patient because his main appearance happens late in the story. Seriously, though, he's so worth the wait. The story itself and Des and Julie's relationship develop rather slowly, but I didn't mind that at all. It gave me ample time to connect with the characters and make the most of their journey.

 photo oie_vxlydi2SEBSM_zps4uoamonl.png

Minor quibbles
Des miraculously - that Twilight Zone punch line - was over the top, that's for sure. On the other hand, I do agree with the author who said that it was very much an HEA romance kind of thing. That's why we read and love romance - there's always a HEA.

The climax over climax subject made me roll my eyes. It seems to be a thing in BDSM novels and, honestly, I could not have cared less. *cue another eye roll*

The book could have benefitted from better editing; it's self-pubbed and it shows.

Overall, Worth the Wait is a very solid and enjoyable addition to my favorite series ever. I hope there will be a 10th installment in the near future.

You're worth the wait to me. You always will be. I knew it the first time I saw you."

WORTH THE WAIT engaged my attention from the very first page. Although this story is part of the NATURE OF DESIRE SERIES, it can be read and enjoyed as a STANDALONE (I personally read it as a standalone and found it to be so gorgeous and romantically satisfying that I'll certainly go back and devour the series.) It's a deeply moving poignant story about two people who fall in love in a BDSM world that's showcased with authenticity, heart and soul. It reached deep inside my book heart and made me feel so very much as it eloquently depicts the serious elements of the story and themes of trust, acceptance, strength and love. Joey Hill displays the beauty of the BDSM world like no one else providing the reader with a perfect understanding of why the hero and heroine are drawn towards each other and crave being part of this lifestyle.

Stage Manager Julie is nearly 40 and, despite her past life experiences, she decides to grasp life in a way she never has before showing her strength of character, her feisty nature and independence. Julie's voice strongly resonates within the third person narrative rationalizing her inner thoughts to Des, opening herself to him and allowing the reader to feel her nerves, her concerns and thoughts whilst warming to her affable personality. Desmond Hayes, a roofer by profession and a Dominant rope artist is a beautiful human being with an incredibly moving past and present that unfolds in perfect time with the story evoking my complete and utter investment in his journey and relationship with the female protagonist. He uses his rope artistry skills to perfection on our heroine as she strives to bring her Erotic Performance Theatre to fruition and embrace her submissive desires. Her aim is to turn the theatre into an educative place, raising awareness of the beauty of erotic scenes whilst entertaining the public; it also becomes a place where she can safely explore her own proclivities.

WORTH THE WAIT slowly builds tightly packed layers of complex emotion and characters that convey a beautiful, thought provoking and truly romantic story that’s steeped in the theme of BDSM, entwined in the core of their beings - a dominant and a sub who are simply made for each other. Their story made my heart beat fast as it gently surged towards the climax of the piece making me think and feel. Joey Hill's meticulous research and the generous people she associates with ensures an appropriate, and often precise, level of truth in her writing resulting in my full belief, investment and connection to her characters and their heart-moving story. The BDSM elements felt truly authentic within the rich tapestry of her writing canvas but not extreme so for those who may have not yet sampled the BDSM trope then I believe this story would be a perfect place to start as the romantic element simply carries one away.

The unexpected humour laced throughout enamoured me, illustrating light and shade within the serious subject matter explored in a prose that draws out the character’s personalities as they court each other with their perfect banter and a relationship that develops and matures to the tone of perfection. I love the inclusion of characters from this author’s impressive collection of previously released novels. Thomas and Marcus being the main supporting cast which will delight fans of their story. It was my first encounter with them but I totally fell in love with their passion and the fierce love they showcased within the layers of WORTH THE WAIT ensuring that I'll very soon reach for ROUGH CANVAS to discover their story.

WORTH THE WAIT is a finely written story of overwhelming deep love and emotion. The moments of beauty and depth in the words, the imagery and analogies are exquisite and made my heart swell as I read and basked in the story of Des and Julie. Joey Hill writes with a touch of brilliance translating the world of BDSM with such intense power and exquisite beauty. LOVE being the most powerful element of all depicting relationships that makes all others fade into insignificance. Who doesn’t crave that kind of love and equally reading about it?

5 "So be it, love." Stars

Another beautiful, BDSM love story from Joey W. Hill. It never ceases to amaze me the breadth of Hill's writing and story-telling. She creates characters for whom you feel so much - pain/pleasure, joy/sorrow, love/anger, fun/serious. Each book I've read from this author presents such vast dichotomies between contrasting feelings to bring you the fullest reading experience. Hill's gift for conveying complex emotions so simplistically is one I treasure. Each of her couples sheds new light on a culture I find fascinating. Each character compounding on the beauty of having this kind of relationship and what it can bring to fulfill your life.

In Worth the Wait this author showcases the culture of BDSM with a Dom/sub relationship where the Dom, Desmond, utilizes rope play. His sub, Julie, is exploring the BDSM world through producing erotic community theater to educate people on BDSM, the safety, the beauty, the vast sexual nature and kinks of it. So, as the author entertains you she educates you in the subtlest of ways proving why having an open mind and heart are pivotal in this kind of relationship and even broader in this kind of community.

Joey Hill provides stories to enlighten us and show the profound depths of the beauty in trust. We all strive for a soul changing partner and in the BDSM world, it's my understanding, that trust is the building block. The gorgeousness of that simple gift these characters give to each other while exposing their raw vulnerabilities going beyond a sexual relationship and into a meaningful emotional one as well, gives hopes to Hill's readers. Even in the hardest, most emotionally taxing moments - the brutality of those feelings hitting you still conjure so much love and even more acceptance in both the characters and readers. It's those qualities with the broad spectrum of feelings she evokes that make her writing so special and her stories so enthralling.

Des and Julie have a beautiful love story. It's told from Hill's signature third person POV. There's a lot of detail and pivotal moments in the book that I couldn't ever spoil. If you're a reader who's in BDSM, D/s relationships, excellent writing, and complex emotions or are already Joey W. Hill fans you don't want to miss Worth the Wait.

description

Julie Ramirez is the managing director of Consent, the first erotic performance art production, at her friend’s new theater in North Carolina. At 40 years old, Julie has surrounded herself with good friends and has a successful career, but she is unlucky in love. With failed relationships in her past but a guarded heart in her present, Julie is willing to forego true love to protect herself from further pain. However, she has always wondered about participating in the BDSM lifestyle and using her current production as an excuse is the perfect way to start. When Julie meets the talented Dom and rigger most known for erotic rope play, she is more than intrigued.

“She could see him in the shadows, absorbing the vibe, his sharp eyes, extensive experience and fully tuned intuition pulling in every detail.”

At 35 years old, Desmond Hayes owns a small roofing company and is a Dom that specializes in Shibari, Semenawa and Kinbaku - erotic/sensual rope bondage. Being active in the BDSM community, Des is approached to assist with the rigging in the new and only erotic theater in town. While Des prefers to keep his scenes on an intimate and private level, he is willing to help those in need during their performances. It isn’t until Des meets Julie when many of his rules slowly start to dissipate.

“When you’re in my ropes, with a little twitch or tug, I can take you to orgasm. Or I can make you feel the burn, the pain. You’ll be … wondering if I’ll let you go before I fuck you, or if I’ll take you while you’re bound like that.”

Upon meeting each other, Des and Julie have an immediate connection. While Julie is quite open and gregarious, Des is a bit more reserved with a refined Dom edge that offers the ability to read expressions and the underlying meanings. When Des agrees to bind Julie, she completely underestimates the intimate connection she ends up feeling as a sub for Des. Knowing how powerful these scenes can be, Des tries to maintain a distance but can’t stay away from Julie. Even though Julie is trying to shield herself, she is undeniably attracted to Des and wants more than she is willing to admit.

description
“She didn’t want to blind her soulmate. She just wanted him to know he’d always be able to find her heart, because the light they shared would be soft, steady and strong, like love itself.”

What transpires between Des and Julie is a realistic journey in eroticism and love that is driven by circumstances, emotions and their pasts. Each have their own doubts about moving forward, but as they choose to acknowledge what they can control, they make strides in the right direction forming a deep bond between them. As in most of Ms. Hill’s books, emotions and issues are examined in a rational manner while her characters' actions and decisions drive the plot. With Des and Julie, their strengths and weaknesses coalesce bringing each what they have always sought.

“So whatever happens, there are no regrets. We’re rolling the dice and seeing if we’ll get lucky. Got it?”

For me, I absolutely loved Des from the beginning because while he had a quiet and soothing way about him, he also had a commanding edge that could bring a sub to her knees with one stare from his warm eyes. Julie is such a creative and eccentric character. She speaks her mind and would lay down her soul for her friends. Also a character to me was the theater, since it is such a big part of Julie’s life and it is how Des and Julie meet.

As always, Joey W. Hill’s writing elevates erotica and BDSM to a new level. Expect some extremely hot times (including Des in a kilt) but also a dose of realism that grounds her characters and the plot. For those who follow Ms. Hill’s series, you will be happy to read a little more about Marcus and Thomas and there’s an honorable mention to my favorite Dom, Tyler Winterbottom, and the Knights of the Boardroom men. However, please note most of the books do not have to be read in order.

Worth the Wait offers a deep message about enjoying what you have, to take some chances and to appreciate the good moments in life. I highly recommend this book!

Joey W. Hill will forever remain my Ultimate Favorite because, to date, I have yet to read another author whose writing moves me as much as hers does. When reading Joey's work, I feel like I am given a piece of her heart and soul because it's clear she pours both into every single one of her stories. Her books are most reread and most highlighted books on my Kindle.

This latest installment of her Nature of Desire series didn't disappoint. Joey's ability to create characters that are so unique and 'perfectly imperfect' is simply amazing! From main characters to a very colorful supporting cast, you instantly fall in love with them all and hope [or at least I do!] that eventually they ALL get to have their own story. [Billie Dee-Lite's novella, anyone?? GAH!]

photo joey collage 2 effects final_zpsx0v6kcs4.jpg

I honestly don't have much to say other than if you are fan of this series/author, you will absolutely fall in love with 'Worth the Wait'! Very raw and emotional (as it is the case with ALL of Joey's stories) this book tells a story of Julie (Marcus & Thomas' best friend) and Desmond, who we meet for the first time. Throw in a bunch of cameos by so many of Joey's wonderful characters plus an unexpected twist and you get another winner that is latest Nature of Desire novel.

*Can be enjoyed as standalone but you HAVE to meet Marcus & Thomas in Holding the Cards and then Rough Canvas (where we briefly meet Julie for the first time). Even if you don't read M/M, their story is very much worth reading.

**Some of the best heart to heart AND amusing banter [courtesy of Marcus Stanton] is one of my personal favorite moments in this book.

***Probably one of Joey's mildest [in terms of BDSM content] books but open mind is still very much A MUST for this one.

Cheers!

Worth the Wait is an emotional journey of 2 souls that finally find what they thought they would never find- True Incredible Beautiful Love. They are not perfect and there are many issues that must be overcome in order to open their souls to one another. This story is erotic, it's loving, it's sassy, it's emotional, and it's oh so beautifully written.

I know when I open a JWH book, I am in for an extraordinarily moving book that I am positive will make me FEEL with every emotion under the sun. The characters, their feelings, their motivations are all brought to life by words that are visually breathtaking. Joey Hill is without a doubt an amazing author.

Julie Ramirez and Desmond Hayes are two characters that will captivate your hearts. Julie is a woman discovering her submissive side. She has come to North Carolina to help her friend open an erotic theatre. Des is a Dom and a rigger. His day job is a roofer and when he comes to help with the theatre, Julie and Des meet. They each have baggage but when they meet, something happens. Through sassy bantering, Julie and Des becoming endearing to each other. There are secondary characters (Logan and Madison, Marcus and Thomas, Billie Dee-Lite and others) sprinkled throughout the story that enhance and bond Julie and Des together. The banter between all characters is fantastic. It's sweet and saucy and sassy and sexy. The story also incorporates medical drama which emotionally intensifies the story. My heart tiptoed throughout the entire story. Their love isn't an easy task but their journey of self discovery and opening their souls to one another is one that makes your heart swoon and melt. I will say that there is an epilogue too to further your contentment........❤️❤️❤️❤️.

 photo image_zpscos8lnuq.jpeg

This story is erotic in nature but most importantly it is a love story. The passion of the Dom/sub relationship is intense and arousing. But what each craves is given freely by the other. While BDSM may not be your preferred genre, the exquisite way that the author explains what true BDSM is and what it truly means to the characters in the lifestyle is absolutely remarkable. Julie and Des have become yet another magically made couple by the incredible Joey W Hill.

 photo image_zpsnz7hsavu.jpeg

I loved this story. I loved the simplicity and the complexity of the characters. I loved the perfect mix of drama and eroticism. The sassy bantering throughout the story was spot on. And I loved that this author made me FEEL with my heart and soul.

*ARC received as part of blog tour*

*whispers* I finally popped my Joey cherry!

I admit, this was me, at first...

... um both, yes... and now...

I’ll start by saying that I don’t often venture into BDSM land with my romance reads. While I can understand the underlying needs behind the dynamics, some stories are beyond my comfort zone. Having said that, when I do venture into this subgenre, I know I can rely on friends’ recommendations here, and I’m telling you now, Joey cannot come any more highly recommended. So while this is my first Joey read for me, it feels her work is quite familiar to me already. Guess it was high time to pull up my big girl knickers. Plus I was told this is one of her “mild” ones. Oh, and that it's a standalone. So I was more than ok with that. Scratch that, I was beyond stoked.

This is such a beautiful story of how the relationship built between Julie and Des. They’re not in their 20's anymore so they both have experienced enough. Julie, who’s been burnt enough in the past, carries with her enough baggage and insecurities when it comes to finding love. Des, who’s had to deal with health issues more than most, has set emotional walls to protect himself. But when these two found each other, Julie was willing enough to acknowledge her insecurities and put it aside to give love a chance and Des was willing enough to acknowledge that there are things that you can’t just control and that there can be one person worth breaking down his walls for.

I took my sweet time reading this not because I was engaged but more because I wanted to savor the pages, whether I admit it or not. With all the internal processing from the MCs, there felt like a good amount of heavy silence, and with that silence, what came to mind is something I learned in one of my personal development courses; that sometimes, it’s good for silence to do the heavy lifting. And that’s what I felt Joey did. In doing so, I then ended up internalizing some of the characters’ emotions and therefore moving me in ways I didn’t anticipate.

Joey’s writing is vivid and simply stunning. The emotions were far from contrite. There is sincerity to the lines that causes pause to smile. The heat in the story, which is thru the roof, without a doubt, enhances the feelings that the characters are trying to convey. The other characters that support the MCs are just as fleshed out (I'm looking forward to getting to know Marcus and Thomas better). I really appreciate how parts of the story are tinged with spirituality in a deferential manner and without being patronizing. It had the right amount of levity and the more serious events makes one appreciate what truly matters in life.

I was getting teary-eyed just writing this perhaps because part of Des’ life hits really close to home. I know what it felt like to be Julie during his operation, even though we didn’t have the same role. And I’m glad how Joey acknowledged in the end some of the medical liberties taken for the sake of moving the story. That in itself was respectful, I thought. For that, I thank you.

So for my first Joey read, I’d say this is more than a winner. Now I understand the praises that friends sing everytime Joey’s name is mentioned. I wholeheartedly agree!

5 "This book is my Unicorn" Stars

This book is my Unicorn. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a romance.

Relatable, mature, intelligent characters - ✔
No overused tropes (ahem, billionaires) - ✔
Emotional depth - ✔

It’s a beautiful story about two people falling in love, who happen to be Dom/sub. It’s not about BDSM where two people end up in a relationship. The focus is the romance, their journey, and a major part of that is Dom/sub because that is who they are. (I hope that makes sense. It does in my head.)

JWH's characterizations are lovely. The characters are so deep and well rounded, fully fleshed out and dynamic. Julie and Des both have their own baggage; they both have their fears of getting hurt or hurting someone, of being vulnerable, of losing control. While they are trying to avoid typical relationship games, they, at times, fall victim to their own baggage. One step forward, two steps back. But, I totally get why. The reasons for everything they do are all out in the open. So, as a reader, I wasn’t frustrated by any setbacks in their relationship. It simply tugged on my heart-strings and made me more invested in them individually and in their relationship.

As for the D/s dynamic, JWH is one of very few authors that can describe the focused, all consuming connection between Dom and sub. She really makes you feel what that is. For me, as a reader, it’s nirvana. It really doesn’t get any better than that. While some BDSM books out there are simply sex focused, hers dig far deeper. It's why her books are such a treat. It’s why this is going on my favorites shelf. And, it’s why this book is my Unicorn.

FULL REVIEW NOW POSTED:

“I've never wanted to keep someone. I've never let myself…want that.”

If you have ever read a novel by Joey W. Hill—whether you’re a seasoned reader of BDSM romances, or a more sporadic, ‘vanilla’ one like me—you’ll agree with me that there is something utterly spellbinding and truly unforgettable about every single one of her incredible stories. With flawless character development and intriguing, robust plotlines, her stories never fail to touch me deeply, move me in ways I never thought possible, and I always walk away feeling my soul is enriched in some small way. The story of two people who never believed true love would ever find them, but who recognize in one another all they’ve always secretly wished for, this book is a true gem in a series that I keep loving more and more, and I cannot recommend it highly enough to anyone seeking an exquisitely written, emotional love story…with a delicious dose of kink.

I don’t want the once in a lifetime trip. I want the whole lifetime.

On the cusp of her fortieth birthday, Julie Ramirez is ready for a change in her life. Having never found the kind of everlasting connection she has always longed for—a passionate love that would not quickly flare up and die, but burn steadily for a lifetime—and no longer trusting herself to choose the right type of man for herself, she leaves her home and job as theatre manager in New York City to manage a small erotic performance theatre in North Carolina, hoping a change in scenery would offer a fresh perspective on her life.

She had to do something different, or nothing would change. Somehow, something had to change. She was going to explode out of her skin otherwise.

A new city, a new circle of friends, a new professional challenge might all be part of the perfect recipe for a new life too, but her greatest catalyst for change comes in the form of a grungy handyman whose every word, every touch, every look aimed her way awakens an unfulfilled part of herself she’s ignored for too long. Julie has always secretly entertained the idea of exploring her submissive side, but with a fragile heart so eager to love and be loved, she has never felt ready or safe enough with a man to dip her toes into the experience. One long moment with the charismatic Dom, however, is all it takes for her to feel she could finally take that step.

She craved surrender. She craved the trust that went with it, this feeling of safety and flying. The feel of being in the arms of a man who knew how to command her heart and soul while cherishing both.

Desmond “Des” Hayes’ unassuming general appearance might not stop people’s hearts at first glance, but once he locks eyes with a woman, they remain under his hold by the sheer power of his natural charisma and self-confidence. A roofer by day, Des is also a well respected rigger in the BDSM community, his innate talent in the art of rope bondage having earned him the admiration of not only his peers, but also of every submissive who has ever found herself under his skillful hands.

“I’d love to see you in my rope and nothing else.”

From the moment they meet, Julie knows for certain that Des is the kind of guy who could crush her heart easily and irreparably this time around, but the more time they spend in each other’s company, the harder it becomes to keep suppressing the very part of her his every touch awakens. As they start exploring a sexual relationship between them, one that fulfills them in new and unexpected ways, it soon becomes clear to them both that they might have found something far more precious in each other than a short-lived fling, something they never thought they would find. But they might not be both ready to believe they could keep it.

“You’re too much, too amazing, too…beyond anything I ever expected to be able to call mine, so I know it can’t be right or real…”

With astonishing insight into human nature and the very unique chemistry that binds us to one another, Ms Hill takes us on a captivating exploration of erotic intimacy, love, friendship, hope, as she redefines the very meaning of family and selfless love. In Julie, we find a woman whose heart has always been her greatest weakness, but its capacity to love unconditionally also happens to be her greatest strength. Her struggle to trust that heart, however, even when she knows that she has found everything she has always dreamed of, stands in stark contrast to Des’ unwillingness to ever let himself love a woman to the point of wanting to keep her in his life. The author uses the D/s dynamic between the characters to delicately accentuate that inner battle in them both, as those intense moments of intimacy provide them with an outlet to strip themselves from all emotional restraints. From beginning to end, we feel privy to every single hidden facet of these characters’ fascinating personalities, and, for me, it is that very understanding that made this story so compelling and easy to relate to.

“I’ve never let myself fall in love. Never thought I could afford it. Turns out, we’re not given much choice about that, are we?”

I found myself enthralled by this story, these characters, the level of genuine emotion present in each and every scene, and in utter awe of this author’s brand of storytelling. I fell in love with too many characters to count, intrigued with a world that could not be any more dissimilar to my own, yet felt compelling and familiar until the very last page. And I walked away smiling, once again besotted with the beauty to be found in a Joey W. Hill novel.

[I strongly advise reading the story of Thomas and Marcus, the heroine’s two best friends, before delving into this book, as I believe the knowledge of their history would greatly enrich the enjoyment of this story.]

“Master. I want to keep you too.”

OMG this woman always makes me cry!

Every time I read a JWH book I know I'm in for a romantic, thoughtful, heart-wrenching book. In spite of it, she always manages to surprise me.

Des' and Julie's story is a lovely journey. Their learning to trust each other and relay on each other was the main plot of the book, everything else was window dressing. I loved how their quirks and personalities lined up. There are so many things to tell about them, but I won't do it. I would spoil the experience. Let me just say that everything feels natural and as it should be.

JWH also loves to visit past characters(YAY!). I haven't read this series yet so Marcus and Thomas are new to me, but Madison and Logan are old favorites. Ms Hill manages to intertwine her series/worlds so well that everything so organic. I never have moments of "what the hell is X character doing here? He isn't supposed to be here, damn it!", the only thing I'm thinking is "heh, I knew Y was going to help with this"(or along the line :D)

All in all, for Ms Hill's stories, I might even get over my aversion of femdoms and M/M.

I run out of superlatives when it comes to putting my feelings down on "paper" about a Joey W. Hill story. And really, this time, the title says it all anyway, but as is her habit, Ms. Hill does not settle for the tried-and-true in finding the perfect characters, despite their flaws, to place into the perfect setting.

The inestimable "Nature of Desire" series gives gentle Julie her long-awaited, well deserved though, very hard-earned HEA. Long time readers will recognize her as Marcus and Thomas' lonely friend from "Rough Canvas", but she comes into her own when she and Des navigate the usual relationship issues in the midst of some UN-usual circumstances. Des is a compellingly unconventional Hero with a penchant for all things rope and an appallingly fatalistic outlook. Their core strengths as individuals are combined into a powerful force in this emotional journey, wherein they manage, through determination and tenacity, to guide one another through self doubts and preconceived outcomes to that place where they recognize and accept the blessings in one another that fulfill them. Their life is not and never will be perfect or normal, and there will be adjustments most of us don't even want to think about, but that is the beauty of this particular tale in this particular genre:

In a literary model where everyone and everything must be perfect to achieve the desired end, Ms. Hill successfully and beautifully shows the reader that ordinary is extraordinary, and "perfect" is a state of mind. And that a happy ending may not come close to resembling that of your mind's eye, but if you're open to possibilities, it is definitely Worth the Wait.

Another fab story by Joey!! I love Des. He's so sweet and dominating all at the same time, I love how Joey can make you feel the emotions with the BDSM lifestyle. The very powerful emotions and connections her characters have. It's not the shock value of BDSM but the underlying and deep trust snd love her characters have for one another. Julie and Des will not disappoint you, of course there is emotional angst that will have your heart ache a bit but Joey has a way to make you understand it's not the hand your dealt but what you do with that hand no matter how much time you have, it's about making the most of life and appreciate what you have while you have it. Beautiful story. Des and Julie are beautiful people and of course her secondary characters are a hit too!!!

5 ***** beautiful stars!!

The Romance Review

Waiting for the right person and the right time is not easy to do. For those who see their friends and family finding their "one" early on in life, it makes a gal nervous. Especially when said gal hits the big milestone of 40. Julie is resigned to a life filled with her work. She is passionate about her job as a theater manager. And this may be all the passion she will have out of life. When she takes on setting up a theater with an erotic showcase theme focused on kink positive, things change for the better.

I really enjoyed the BDSM in this story. For those who are rope bunnies and riggers, this story will send them over the moon. Ms. Hill does an excellent job of incorporating rope work and rigging for both the show and personal interaction between Julie and Desmond. It shows that Ms. Hill either researched into this type of play and/or she has tried it. Her attention to detail from scene set up to presentation shows an understanding of BDSM at a deeper level. This authenticity adds a realistic layer to this erotic tale. Instead of a BDSM book or a book with a bit of BDSM thrown in, this story is an erotic romance with a sexy blend of kinky fun.

It is also nice to see how this book shows some of the mistakes that can happen without being lecturing. The comparison between a demonstration on stage versus a scene on the floor is well done. There is a certain showmanship required to wow and entice the crowd. Ms. Hill hits upon many of the tips and tricks I have seen, used or been a part of for BDSM presentations.

What I really liked about this book is how it showcases BDSM in a positive light. I like the outreach message through education and familiarization. I also really liked the characters who were relatable and people I can identify with. Both Julie and Desmond remind me of people in the BDSM community where I live. Ms. Hill gives a good glimpse into the people and the lifestyle whilst softening the rough edges. What do I mean by rough edges? I mean that for the most part, people in the lifestyle are not as great with communication as Julie and Desmond. Even if Julie and Desmond had a few disconnects, they are relatively drama free and both behaved in a mature manner.

The chemistry between Julie and Desmond is lovely because it is slow and sultry. It is a buildup which comes across more naturally compared to many instalove romances. I like how both are a bit wary but they can put those fears aside and learn about each other. They talk and have fun outside of BDSM. It isn't all about kink. Kink is just a natural part of their life as if they were breathing. This is what really made me happy--the blending of two worlds into a cohesive fulfilling one.

Ms. Hill is an extraordinary storyteller who whisks readers into a lovely world where a supportive community exists. This tale leaves a reader feeling happy, hopeful and turned on. Highly recommended for kinky readers who enjoy the exhibitionist side to BDSM.

Worth the Wait is another emotionally charged book written in such a way it’s impossible not to find yourself investing deeply into these characters. Although this book is part of Joey’s Nature of Desire Series, I read it as a standalone and it was perfect. Joey’s niche is the world of BDSM and it is due to the thorough accuracy she has in her stories. She emphasizes safe, sane and consensual as well as the safety in the practice itself. With those specifics taken care of the reality of the rest of the story is one that can just be enjoyed.

Julie Ramirez, is now 40 years old and over it. Over the bad relationships, over giving herself and losing out every time she tries. She is cracked, broken, running and yet she has an underlying strength. No matter how many times she says she will never try for another relationship, she truly wants to have her happily every after. Desmond Hayes, this man was an enigma and so difficult to put in a box. His story pulled at my heart, every step of the way as he slowly and painfully let out a bit at time. Julie and Des’ immediate attract was more than just physical it literally was a soul touching moment. One that pulled at my heart just enough to know this was going to be a fantastic story no matter how it ended.

Julie is helping a friend, Madison, open her new erotic theater when she meets Des, a roofer and contractor. After meeting Des, there is an instant connection and Julie can’t help but want to spend more time with him. Of course the attraction is reciprocated and Des pushes her boundaries of not dating. Julie’s interest in the theater goes beyond just her experience in running one, it is the submissive lifestyle she is drawn toward. She curiously dips her feet into her submissive side and allows Des, a Dom and rigger, to scene with her. The connection between the these two is electric and comes off the pages. They are sweet, sarcastic and playful with each other. They are also possessive and I can completely understand Julie’s hesitation with watching Des work with another submissive. Again just another way Joey is able to relate her character’s to the readers.

She adds a comical set of secondary characters you will just love. That comicalness is needed as there are some very serious and underlying issues established in this story. Most surround Des and his secrets, which are secret because he refuses to allow anyone to help. However, as these two demand more from each other, more walls come down and they begin to repair each other. The deeper they submit themselves into the BDSM lifestyle, he as her Dom and she as his submissive, the more the secrets must be shared. Although Des is tying Julie up for the scenes, it is as if he is releasing himself at the end of each one. It’s a beautiful love story, that took me on a journey I will need to recover from for days.

Joey W Hill is one of my favorite authors. If you haven't had an opportunity to read one of her books, you should definitely take a chance on Worth the Wait. This story drew out all my emotions. I laughed, hurt, cried, feared and rejoiced. Never did I want a happier ending for both characters. Yes, it does contain BDSM and some M/M however it's not the main focus of the story. The story revolves or better said evolves around two people who had put aside any chance of finding true love until they found each other. They both feared finding love but for different reason. It was understandable in both cases but it makes for a hell of an emotional ride.

"She was done with the slide along the rainbow that always dumped her into a pot of ice cold sludge."

Julie Ramirez left New York to North Carolina to run an erotic performance theater for her friend Madison. (Madison had appeared previously in the Naughty Bits Series.) Julie has thrown herself into her career because she hasn't had any luck at love and doesn't want to get hurt one more time.

Desmond Hayes, aka Spiderman, is a roofer and a Dom. He enjoys the ropes but won't go beyond a scene with a sub. He doesn't want to cause hurt so he stays out of relationships.

Des is drawn to Julie, he pulls her into his web. I like to add I meant that literally, Des is a Master of the ropes hence is nickname Spiderman. He finds himself conflicted because his fate won't allow himself to find true love and Julie can't handle another relationship that only leads to hurt. The story has some intense moments with the characters conflicting emotions. It also has some steamy moments when they come together and meld. I love how the story came together at the end. Marcus and Thomas, Julie's best friends, also add to the excitement. They are very protective of Julie and you can bet there's plenty of testosterone thrown around. If you want a feel good story, I can't recommend this enough. 5 Stars!!

Worth the Wait (Nature of Desire #9) by Joey W. Hill is as complex and simple as love itself. We met Julie in Rough Canvas (Nature of Desire #6) and now as she nears 40 she finally meets a man she can fall for whether she should or not is a whole other thing. Julie has made poor choices in men except for Marcus and Thomas her best friends who are totally committed to each other. She wants a love like theirs and despairs of ever finding it. When she lets go and lets life steer her to new challenges life throws Desmond Hayes in her path. The attraction is instant and combustible. Julie is outraged that the fates are playing her this way. Can she move past her past and give Des and the future a chance?
Worth the Wait will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions that will leave you breathless. This is the type of story that stays with you way past the last page.

a SOLID 4 1/2 "Shibari" Stars
Unique story, situation and characters create a novel that is very much a signature Joey W. Hill read ! What especially is unique & very eye opening is the rope bondage/ Shibari kink that is central to the story. It is mesmerizing what Des does to Julie physically & mentally ( spiritually actually) as a Rope Master. SO SO happy to revisit Marcus & Thomas, as they are Julie's best friends & are intricate to this story. . . . and may I add, I want Billie in ALL future stories - what a hoot!

A wonderful love story of two people who have given up hope of ever finding their soulmate

Nobody does BDSM romance better than Joey W. Hill. Her books are just like BDSM is supposed to be: at least as much if not more about the mind than the bodily aspect of it. Like any good mistress she understands to keep the reader’s (sub’s) focus engaged and their feelings riveted to the page. She certainly managed to keep me on edge for the whole book.
It is also a beautiful, heart-felt love story about two damaged souls meeting when they have given up all hope of doing so.

Although now a successful small business owner, Des hasn’t had an easy life. Abandoned by his mother he grew up in a boy’s home and he always had to fend for himself. Additionally, due to the drug abuse of his mother during the pregnancy he has been saddled with a number of health issues. He has learned to manage them, but still he is aware that even living as healthy as he can he probably is not looking at a normal life span, which, among other things, has kept him entering into a romantic relationship. He has found an outlet for his need of control in the BDSM community, where the parameters of a relationship between Dom and sub are clearly delineated and just as clearly limited. He is well-respected and has carved out a life where he can be content.

Julie also tries to be content. She has lots friends and lives for her work as a community theater manager in New York. She has unacknowledged submissive tendencies which in the past have led her to hook up with the wrong kind of guys. And after several disappointments she has sworn off men. So when a friend asks her to manage a theater in the rural South and to put on a BDSM performance, she doesn’t hesitate to take on this new challenge, even though she has no more than a passing acquaintance with BDSM herself. But then she meets Des and all her suppressed emotions come to the fore. While working together, a tender relationship blooms and Des introduces her to her submissive nature, while still trying to hold back, but soon Julie realizes she wants everything with Des and that she will fight for it and him…

I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical about a male lead with these kinds of health issues, but Joey W. Hill made dealing with them appear so matter of fact, without taking away the severity of the condition. Des is one sexy hero, not least because of his inner strength and his unbending will.

5+ stars from me. Joey W. Hill is one of the most gifted writers when it comes to translating BDSM into words that chain you up and tie you down and put you in thrall to her talent.

Loved this book! The chemistry between Des and Julie is off the charts. The banter between the characters is spot on showing the love and care they have for each other. The fact that Des wears an insulin pump gives him just enough of a vulnerability and enhances the I handle my sh#t quality he exudes. This is the first book of the series I have read and you can bet I'm gonna read the others. Good job Joey Hill, good job!

So there are things about Hill's work that I often enjoy, like the depth of detail describing D/s dynamics. I enjoyed that about this book somewhat, though rope is not my thing at all, but not nearly as much as usual, because there was less to those dynamics in this book. I did like the theater aspect of it very much, and that's actually one of the most compelling things about this book, how much detail there was about theatrical production, what it's like to try to do community erotic theater.

Overall, I found the plot of this book incredibly irritating. It took the easy trope-filled lazy road Every Single Time.

I also didn't like these people, and was not rooting for them as individuals or as a couple, mostly because they were not really people, just cardboard cutouts. They were so thinly drawn, barely there at all, and even meeting characters I actually did like in prior books (e.g. Marcus and Thomas) was not very satisfying this time around. The characterization I usually get in Hill's longer works was diminished by the sheer amount of terrible plot that was forced into a book too short to hold it.

Other stuff that really pissed me off about this book:
There was a secondary character who was marked alternatively as both genderqueer and drag queen that was set up as an amusing spectacle because of that character's gender. That character was also a blatantly racist caricature. The racist caricature is a common thing in Hill's work. This sort of transmisogyny and transphobia is less common. Mostly trans people are just erased from her universes altogether. The fatphobia in this book was also really in your face in a way that is a bit unusual for her work. It's usually less blatant and I think in this case was really wrapped up in the ableism around diabetes, which deserves a few paragraphs.

As a dominant with diabetes and related disabling conditions, I wanted so much more from this story about a diabetic dominant who was grappling with disabling conditions related to his diabetes. I honestly would have been very happy with a low fanfare diabetic who was managing ok and it wasn't a big plot element. (Cuz yknow that is often what it's like to have diabetes for many people, and that kind of representation is incredibly rare and very needed.) But if you are going to talk about medical complications and disabling conditions related to diabetes, I need a much more complex, nuanced portrayal that is not steeped in ableism.

Instead, I got a romance that was hugely tragic because he was sick, a set of health problems that needed (and got) medical miracles right and left, and an intense amount of (supposedly justified) disrespect towards his bodily autonomy and privacy. In other words, this was deeply and intensely ableist. This book made it very clear that this character would not deserve a loving partner unless he did everything "right" to manage his disease and got rescued by ridiculous plot twist miracles that made it so he was dramatically less ill.

This is a miracle cure tragic love story at it's core, and the other elements feel rather low key and tacked on, including the BDSM & the theater stuff that I liked.

Spoiler trigger warnings ahead:

And then there is the gratuitous plot elements that seemed to be there for no reason other than to prop up this dominant's masculinity and to show that he's sick. And if that were a rescuing a kitten from a tree sort of thing that would be bearable. But he rescues his love interest twice, from lethal danger. Once the danger comes from another top's negligence. The other time he rescues her from a stranger who is about to sexually assault her. There is no real reason for either of these plot choices, and they really pissed me off, especially the sexual assault which somehow does not result in trauma of any sort because she is rescued. This dominant rescuing thing is a trope that Hill relies on a lot, and I often have a bit more tolerance for it, but it particularly irritated me in this book because it felt *so* gratuitous and lazy and happened more than once for basically no reason. And because it seemed to be there to prove that he was a man even though he was sick.

If you are a fan of Marcus & Thomas from earlier books you may want to read this with caution, but otherwise I would not recommend it.

I need to start off by saying that Joey Hill was my introduction to the world of BDSM erotica many years ago. Her Vampire Queen series blew me away and when I found myself needing to delve into this world in more depth, the Nature of Desire series was where I turned. I couldn’t have asked for a more talented author to lead the way. Joey set my standard incredibly high from the get-go. This series has moved me to tears of sadness, relief, and joy on many an occasion. It’s opened my eyes to pairings I might not have had a natural interest in reading beforehand. It is unique, soul-wrenching and authentic. The ninth installment, Worth the Wait, lives up to its name.
Julie is approaching 40 and has all but given up on finding her soulmate. All she’s experienced is disappointment and she decides she’s putting any thought of a love life on the back burner when she agrees to help her best friend get an erotic theater production off its feet in North Carolina. She runs a small community theater in New York City and welcomes the change in scenery. Julie has a budding interest in BDSM, feels she has submissive tendencies. Here she can feel free to explore. Enter Desmond Hayes, a roofer hired to make repairs to the theater’s structure. In the BDSM world, he’s well known as a rigger, a rope suspension artist and a very charismatic Dom that never gets close to the subs he scenes with. Des has his personal reasons for keeping his distance. Despite this, he’s known as a consummate professional, a caring and focused Dom, who always keeps his subs’ best interests and safety at the forefront. Sparks fly when he and Julie meet, and it seems that neither can resist the pull of a force stronger than their fears.
Watching Julie and Des’ relationship evolve was pure joy. The chemistry at their first meeting was mesmerizing. Joey writes characters with such authentic emotion that you can’t help but be sucked into the story. I find it hard sometimes to characterize why I love her writing style so much, but simply put, she moves me in ways few authors are able to do. It’s in the way she sets a scene, with care and attention to detail, the way she captures each nuance of internal struggle and emotion, the way she resolves that tension in the least cliché way possible, that keep me coming back for more. Rope suspension isn’t a particular draw for me, but my eyes were opened to its beauty as an art for and way to enhance intimacy between a Dom and his/ her submissive. The D/s dynamics here are good for beginners to the BDSM world. There is focus on the psychology of BDSM, the joy of submission, of giving up control, but not heavy on the masochistic end. The cast of the production was one of a kind and unforgettable and the recurring characters from previous books enhanced the fun. Such great dialog that flows naturally across the page. Joey is known for old, well-loved characters popping up in her books and even cross-series appearances on occasion. I’m always on the lookout. That being said, this is absolutely a great standalone. If you’re new to the Nature of Desire series, Worth the Wait will be the perfect intro to Joey Hill’s captivating voice. If you’re already a fan, you’ll not be disappointed. This series is as good as it’s ever been, now 12 years in!

Very enjoyable book. I liked how the hero and heroine had an emotional connection along with a physical connection. Lots of very hot scenes involving rope, public sex, and some dirty talk. Detailed explanation of how the hero tied rope in a few scenes so I found that interesting.

The hero and heroine talked about serious issues that they both had. It was a nice change from other books where a simple conversation that could solve problems never happens.

I liked how the hero and heroine talked about fate, when it came to some information he found out. (Avoiding spoilers here, but it involves his family)

A few things that I didn't like: Hero still did scenes with other women after he was in a relationship with the heroine. And not only did he tie up this other sub with rope, he also gave her an orgasm. I felt like it was cheating even though heroine knew he was going to do a scene with this other sub. I was upset that the hero could do that with another woman. Afterwards, heroine tells him she didn't want to inhibit his art (of rope bondage) and other women are more flexible and can do positions that she can't. Hero tells her she's the only woman he wants to tie up and he won't do scenes with other women.

Another problem I had was a very minor plot point where a rapist breaks into the theater where heroine is staying and almost rapes her. I felt like this scene did not need to be in the book and it was glossed over. Hero saved her but it still felt unnecessary for the plot.

It was different to see a hero with major health problems and his approach to life and how he dealt with having diabetes and needing dialysis and a kidney transplant.

Again, I am very happy with how the author showed the hero and heroine building an emotional connection. They had long, meaningful talks, they laughed together, they did nice things for each other, and they truly knew who the other person was. Yes, this is an erotic novel but it's also a great romance novel with a rewarding, healthy relationship.

I always enjoy a good bdsm story.

Desmond is a roofer with serious health issues. He also oozes dominance his specialty is rope plan which I find very interesting. He also has some serious health issues.

Julie is a theater manager, while she hasn't had much experience with the dom/sub relationship she finds herself intrigued with the dynamics of things but she is not completely sure if she submissive material. She has had heart broken a few times and is a little skittish of any kind of relationship for fear of heartbreak, but when the sexy roofer walks into her life there is a chemistry between them that cannot be denied. Will Julie find herself laying her heart on the line once again?

I really truly wanted to love Worth the Wait. I found the concept of the story beautiful, intriguing and interesting , however at the same time I found it to be a little slow for me.

Yes I would definitely recommend reading.

In the Nature of Desire series, this is not a favorite for me but Joey Hill's writing has always been solid for me. Her characters come alive in my mind. I can see them, hear them and smell every bit of rank sweat JH describes. I adore that characters from past books return to support main characters as they slog through their own romantic quagmires on their way to happily ever after (or til' death do they part). Dialogue is perhaps a bit too witty. I just don't think everyone could be quite that clever or careful with their words but it does make the story far more entertaining. Since the author admits to the deux ex machina to bring about quick, albeit unlikely, resolution I will let it slide though it is a bit of thorn for me. It is, after all, romance and when we close the final page we want to feel that the characters will continue to live a Cinderella life. (After the prince, of course).
