John Milton #7-9

The John Milton Series #7-9

Rate this book
You won't be able to put down these nearly 1000 pages of espionage, revenge, thrills and spills. From the Bourne-esque HEADHUNTERS, to dark criminal enterprise of THE NINTH STEP and the thrilling THE JUNGLE, don't start this collection late at night - you won't be able to put it down!

***

MEET JOHN MILTON.

He considers himself an artisan. A craftsman. His trade is murder.

Milton is the man the government sends after you when everything else has failed. Ruthless. Brilliant. Anonymous. Lethal. You wouldn't pick him out of a crowd but you wouldn't want to be on his list.

But now, after ten years, he's had enough - there's blood on his hands and he wants out. Trouble is, this job is not one you can just walk away from. He goes on the run, seeking atonement for his sins by helping the people he meets along the way. But his past cannot be easily forgotten and before long it is Milton who is hunted, and not the hunter.

HEADHUNTERS

Bury your enemies, and bury them deep.

John Milton thought he was done with Avi Bachman. The most dangerous man he's ever known has been incarcerated in Angola, the brutal Louisiana prison. Inmates rarely leave Angola. Once you go in, the only way out is in a box. But Bachman is no ordinary prisoner. He was an assassin for the Mossad, and he has favours to call in.

Milton is in the Australian outback with an old friend and his flirtatious kid sister, looking for a summer’s peace to put his troubled mind to rest.

But Bachman has other plans.

He thinks that Milton killed his wife, and now he wants revenge.

From Australia to Israel, from Hong Kong to Croatia, here is the conclusion of this brutal chapter in Milton’s life. The two headhunters are on a collision course, and only one of them will walk away.

THE NINTH STEP

Milton is keeping a low profile in London when he meets Eddie Fabian. Fabian confesses that he is considering suicide, and that the reason for his depression was the abuse that he suffered as a child. Milton offers to help, but, before he can, Eddie is found dead in circumstances that Milton considers suspicious.

And then events take a turn that no-one could have anticipated…

Milton’s attempted good deed becomes a quest to unveil corruption at the highest levels of government and murder at the dark heart of the criminal underworld.

Milton is pulled back into the game, and that’s going to have serious consequences for everyone who crosses his path.

THE JUNGLE

An assassin haunted by his past. Two young refugees out of their depth and in need of his special talents.

John Milton is no stranger to the world’s seedy underbelly. But when the former British Secret Service agent comes up against a ruthless human trafficking ring, he’ll have to fight harder than ever to conquer the evil in his path.

After Milton meets a refugee who lost a sister to people smugglers, he travels through war-torn Libya and the murkiest parts of Italy and France to get the girl back. As enemies watch his every move, Milton confronts a group of Albanian pimps and smugglers so dangerous, they could easily make this mission his last.

The Jungle is a gripping standalone thriller in Mark Dawson’s bestselling John Milton series.

Mark Dawson was born in Lowestoft and grew up in Manchester and Chicago. He has worked as a lawyer and currently works in the London film industry. His first books, "The Art of Falling Apart" and "Subpoena Colada" have been published in multiple languages.

He is currently writing two series. Soho Noir is set in the West End of London between 1940 and 1970. The first book in the series, "The Black Mile", deals with the (real life but little known) serial killer who operated in the area during the Blitz. "The Imposter" traces the journey of a criminal family (think The Sopranos in austerity London and you'd be on the right track).

The John Milton series features a disgruntled special agent who aims to help people to make amends for the terrible things that he has done. Mark, as a child of the 80s, will freely admit that he watched a lot of The Equalizer in his youth.

Mark lives in Wiltshire with his family.

These books continue to deliver and pay off even more as time goes on. For readers who have been following since the beginning, we have the broad knowledge of Milton's story, and so our universe as we read on only expands and makes enjoying the present story that much easier. The pages really do turn themselves. Knowing I am finally catching up to Mark Dawson's current trajectory of John Milton, I've enjoyed taking my time reading these. I'm finally out of the "box sets" and into the individual purchases. Looking forward to more!

This is the third sort of three John Milton books by Mark Dawson that I’ve read now and they get better each time, I own all 5 so far and will buy the 6th once the 18th is released , followed by the 16-18 set.
As much as I enjoyed Headhunters and The Ninth Step, The Jungle was the best Milton story yet, especially given that The Jungle of the title refers to THE Jungle refugee camp in Calais that so many are having to live in because of circumstances outside their control, not least of which is the increasing right-wing xenophobic attitude of the British government as well as all others that don’t see to understand the difference between asylum seekers and “immigrants”
But anyway Mark Dawson is an excellent storyteller and personally I find John Milton a more relatable character than Jack Reacher, though I enjoy Lee Child’s books as well.

Good series

I think I read ALL of The John Milton Series. It was different because they were not in order. Jumped around years and decades. But I enjoyed the read.

Great story teller!

Normally when you read a book that you enjoy you get to the end a d that is that. You go and find another book to read or wait until the author releases the next in the series.

What is great about these trilogies is not only are you left wanting g more when you get to the end of the story, but there is more! 3 great stories in one book!

I’ve really enjoyed the John Milton series having discovered them “out of order”, but have now gone through them and have really enjoyed them.

I seriously think the john Milton series is better than Lee Child’s Jack Reacher. Similar in character and wanting to help others, but very different in stories that take you all around the world at a very fast pace.

Excellent books, keep on writing Mark Dawson!

Great boxed set!

While I would gladly have bought these books individually, it was nice that they were in a set like this. I have provided comments on each of the books separately. I will say is nice to see how John Milton, the main character in the series, has developed over the course of time. He seems to be becoming more focused on doing right in order to put to rest the demons that haunt him from all his years of service to his government. Nice to see someone who has "retired" yet still gets to use the skills he worked so hard to acquire.

The John Milton series continues to be full of thrills and spills in these, the 3rd boxed set. In it, John heads off to Australia and then returns to England--but things aren't safe and cozy for him there either.

Although in many ways traditional thrillers, and likely to appeal to fans of that genre, one of the better things about this series is that John travels around and spends a lot of time interacting with people on the edges of society. In this collection, John works as a sheep shearer in Australia, at a cabbie's shelter in London, and plunges into the world of desperate refugees from Africa. Each location and situation is unique and described with plenty of living detail, plunging the reader into these often down-and-out worlds. And, of course, there's plenty of guns and action.

On the other hand, these particular books all had the same plot device that I find very irritating, in which a lot of the action is generated by the actions of a female character whom John is trying to protect, but who does ill-advised things that plunge them both back into even worse danger. Occasionally that can be forgiven--although it is a lazy plot device--but reading it three times in a row irritated me a bit. It was especially disappointing because the previous books had some really good female characters.

Anyway, that was a bit of a bummer for me, but overall these are very good thrillers that are sure to be enjoyed by thriller fans everywhere.

HEADHUNTERS- mossad, Australia. The second chapter of his feud with a former rival that believes that Milton killed his wife. The really bad guy is broken out of jail in Louisiana with the help of Mossad, because he has the goods on their current and past agents and will give it up if they don’t help him exact revenge against Milton.

7-15-23 THE NINTH STEP. Back in London, working for a cab driver’s rest stop. He meets a tortured soul, Eddie, at an AA meeting. He gets involved with Eddie after he is told the story of his sexual abuse as a child at the hands of important men. There are two scandals that involve Eddie’s victimization. He cannot tolerate. Brings down multiple people…really bad guys, including Eddie’s adoptive family.

7-17-23 THE JUNGLE. Milton does a favor for a friend who is injured. He drives his truck on a routine run, then encounters a young immigrant who has fled Syria with his sister. She has been taken by Albanians to work in a brothel. Milton promises to find her and return her. There are many layers to this crime…the traffickers then sell her to the people running the brothels. They all must be punished. Lots of heart pounding moments, especially when Hicks is about to be tortured. Ugh.

Mark Dawson’s novels are a must read

My wife and I are avid readers. We try to find authors who are not well known to many and if we find them, we want everyone to know. Mark Dawson is one of these rare finds. His series about John Milton have been so well written. I find it difficult to take a break from his novels. Yet , what writer can any of us say that about. He is in the league with Brad Thor, Daniel Silva, and Vince Flynn to name a few. If you haven’t read Mark Dawson, try book one. You won’t be disappointed. Dr. C. 😎

Love this series 😍

I continue to enjoy the John Milton Series by Mark Dawson. Milton is a flawed human who bumbles about, trying to deal with the emotional repercussions and guilt-laden memories from his previous life as an alcoholic assassin. He's NOT perfect; he realizes how important A.A. is to maintaining sobriety, yet he struggles with maintaining the honesty required to fulfill the 12-Steps.

The series has also been an excellent reading addiction to maintain during my hiatus between completing my Bachelor's and starting my Master's!!!!! Thank you Mr. Dawson :-)

Read books 1-9 straight through

I thought these books were well written and engaging. A lot of books I get through the first 5 pages and throw them out. Dawson is an excellent story teller and Milton is a great protagonist. I liked his character trying to repent for his earlier life, nothing fancy, just the ability to react without hesitation along with a sense of morality setting him apart. Dawson has a great sense of humanism in his storytelling. A+

Good storyline. Characters have somewhat realistic capabilities.

I have developed a real admiration for John’s quests. To help those who have no one to turn to for help. The more I read these stories, the more and more fond I become of the main character. I would like to see him find a measure of happiness with a woman as I thought he might with Mattie in Australia...even if for just a short while. Love these books, hard to put down!!!

Love these books. Have read the series twice now. Always moving along

Love the books. Love they're in a boxed sets it's easier to keep reading. Read the series twice. It flows really well. He is independent yet relies on others when needed. Not a self observed hero. There is a lot about AA in there but he doesn't stuff it down your throat just shows the struggles of not drinking anymore.

A British and more believable Jack Reacher,

Another enthralling box set by Mr
Dawson. Our John certainly has a few demons and his life revolves around trying to find peace within his soul. An average sort of guy with some particular skills righting wrongs a bit of a Jack Reacher and an Equalizer rolled onto one. But he's British and he bleeds and gets some things wrong just like real people do. Well done Mr. Dawson onto the next book.

Milton Series is tough to beat!

I think the entire Milton series is equal to or better than anything else in this genre. Milton is a smart, educated, physical beast who carries the oppressive blanket of addiction with him as he tries to make amends for his prior acts. The research behind the stories and the details of the weaponry and geography involved are amazing. 7-9 were wonderful; but so were 1-6. I suspect 10 and up will continue the trend.

This is a very fun series. Quite reminiscent of the James Bond novels I read as a teenager 50+ years ago. The author is clever and a refreshingly good writer. He is also quite prolific and I look forward to reading more of his work after I have finished this bunch of books. The main character is quirky enough to be interesting, While remaining a first class bad ass. The action is great and totally ridiculous but again totally fun.

Intrigue, adventure, and an imaginative morality

Spellbinding intensity to keep the reader glued to the Author's creativity for mystery. The John Milton series is a must read for the dedicated reader. Research for the accuracy of locations and methods and firearms plus some acceptable creative license make the characters and situations come alive to the reader. More please. Five stars.

Another Great Series

I enjoyed the first and the last of the three books the best. Book 8 The Feathermen was good but there was a lot of time spent describing details of places in London. It felt like Dawson was showing off how much he knew about London. As an American I get it, but a lot of it is just words for me. Keep the story moving Mark! The last book book 9 was really good; compact, taint, and edge of your seat action. Highly recommended to all Lee Child fans!

Serious, addictive page turners.

Dawson is a superb writer. His books will keep your attention and make it difficult to lay them down. As each story comes to an end, you are left wanting more. I read the first nine books in less than a week. I really need my life back, so I can take care of personal matters, but I am addicted to the John Milton story line, and there is more reading to be done.

Still a fan

Continue to enjoy reading this series. Nothing has really turned me off about them. They are very detailed, sometimes though overly detailed and I find my saying do I really need to know that? All in all very easy to read, good story lines and Milton takes a punishment in every situation he gets into. On to the next series and I may try a different series or a novella or two.

John Milton gets his Girl!

Mark Dawson has created a very relatable British character in John Milton. His SAS background, his alcoholism, a touch of PTSD and his need to do right in order to quell a conscience that often falls back to the numbers of wrongs he committed all over the world, make for a complicated, very much flawed individual. Mark Dawson's books make for a great read. If enjoyable escapism is what you enjoy, look no further!!

Compelling, unnerving, and moving

Compelling, unnerving, and moving as any of the Milton series. I'm so glad I found these. So realistic that it makes one wonder if there are Miltons or Jack Reachers or others with such a combination of deadly skills and a honed sense of justice out and about in the real world.

Read better

I have got to like John Milton. He always gets the job done. My only criticism of book 9 is that too often I felt I was reading a history/ travel brochure. For me, too much of both sometimes unless it is truly relevant to the story. Still quite enjoyable but as said, I’ve read better John Milton stories

Bless the day that Mark Dawson and John Milton came along. That was a few weeks ago and now I've finished reading Books 1-12. Absolutely excellent...almost every one of them.p Will be taking up Beatrix Rose after I read one book to break up the sequence. Don't remember when I've had so much fun reading a single author.....maybe Robert Sanford and Lee Child.

Another thrilling series

The John Milton character is a former killer for a group that eliminated evil doers the world over, a professional hitman. When he decided that his career was no longer what he wanted, he devoted his life to helping those whose lives needed his help. This set of stories contained more thrills and danger than James Bond handked!

Penance or Retribution?

Fast-paced series about a cold blooded assassin who determines his life needs to become refocused on using his substantial, lethal skill set to help the downtrodden and defenceless. Guided by A A rules for living. Well-written with complex but believable story lines! Enjoy!

Excellent

I love the box sets so I can read three book without stopping. This series gives such details that your omission leads you right through the story. Good to the last page and John Milton and Hicks keep you glued to the pages to see how they are going to get out of the predicaments they get in.

Mark Dawson did a tremendous job with all 3 books. I enjoy Miltons goal of trying to gain redemption for all he did as member of the Group. Each story was excellent. Can't wait to read next 3. Great job keeps up good work. Preordered your new book the Vault. Thanks, Carl Clause

Another box set of John Milton thrillers!!

John Milton is the ultimate 'good killer', try as he might to salve his conscience, trouble just follows him.

Well plotted with great characters, both good and bad, keeps me turning the pages.

I did spot a couple of errors (especially referring to the Alsation coast, really 🤔) but this didn't stop the enjoyment.

Highly recommended.
