The Wolf King

Rate this book
Of a sudden, Minnette’s reminiscences were scattered when she heard a sound that was not native to the meadow. A whistled call of sorts—and definitely human.

Sitting up—for she had indeed relaxed to near sprawling in the grass while caught up in her reverie—Minnette frowned when the next sound to reach her was that of shouting—a man shouting.

Leaping to her feet, she looked to the tree line at the north border of the meadow in time to see a man come bursting from without the forest at a full run. He was tall—that much Minnette could distinguish from her distance—and he appeared in some sort of distress by the further look of him. His shirt, though white and bloused at the sleeves, hung open, and he wore no vest or coat about it. His breeches were black, but his legs were otherwise void of protection; he wore no boots nor shoes of any kind.

Again the man shouted, as if tribulation were hot at his heels, and Minnette gasped as she then saw that it was indeed so. For as the man sprinted further into the open meadow, a pack of enormous white wolves, numbering at least five in brood, raced from the tree line in pursuit of the man! The wolves almost instantly overtook their prey, forcing the man to the ground as they pounced upon him, snarling and gnashing their teeth.

Minnette took hold of her kirtle skirt and, without pause, raced into the meadow toward the spectacle. The man would be dead before she reached him—she was certain of it! Yet she must try! She must endeavor to help him—to attempt to ward off the pack of hungry predators before they literally tore the man apart!

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Marcia Lynn McClure grew up influenced by the reminiscent stories of rugged, rural Colorado farm life fascinatingly recounted to her by her parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts…tales of runaway buckboards, mule-drawn plows and dust pneumonia; verbalized images of stream-flooded meadows, frozen over in winter, where a child could peer through the crystal clear ice in wonder at the small fish, snakes and mice sealed in the meadow grasses beneath; stories of hardship and tragedy, love and loss. But always the stories, and the people telling them, bore evidence of the wonder and worthiness of simpler, yet sometimes brutal, times.

These influential people and the family legends they detailed, coupled with her own life experiences and utterly romantic nature, led Marcia to begin writing novels as Christmas gifts for her closest friends…friends who long for a breath of the past and miss the romance of bygone eras; friends searching for moments of distraction from the stressful, demanding times we live in.

And so, knowing that it is the breath of the past and the "take me in you arms and kiss me" kind of moments that so many women long to relive, Marcia spins her tales of love, life and laughter…adventures woven around those compelling, romantic instances that most appeal to a woman's loving heart. Marcia feels that if her readers close one of her books with a contented sigh and a delighted smile, feeling rejuvenated, cheerful and edified, then she has achieved what she set out to do…shower refreshment and happiness on anyone having experienced the story.

Marcia lives in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. There she writes her stories surrounded by her beloved friends and family...and the beautiful desert landscape of New Mexico!

I always get excited when Marcia has a new book come out. They're a perfect escape when you're looking for something light and romantic. I love when she writes in a medieval setting, it almost gives it a fairytale-like feel. Minnette and Balain have a sweet relationship and romance. Both were likable characters, as well as the supporting characters that added a lot to the story. I enjoyed the overall story and plot. Fun read.

I love when Marcia writes this kind of story. I enjoy all her books but the ones that have a fairy tale like elements to them are some of her most memorable. This is a medieval historical romance and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved Balain and his wolves, loved Phillip and his lions and loved Minnette's butterflies. A unique tale that contains all the classic Marcia Lynn McClure ingredients that make her stories a great escape.

A wonderful fairytale

Wow! This is the best that Marcia has written in awhile. The characters are beautiful and the story is just a little magical. Enjoy it! Yes, it's pricey, but I believe in supporting authors that choose to write romance without detailed sex, and this fits the bill perfectly!

I really liked Balian. This was definitely more HIS story, than Minnette's. I really enjoyed that aspect.
Also, as a police wife, I immediately saw the parallel between Balian, the "sheep dog", as the protector, the one who will protect those who don't even care for him, and our police officers. I picked up on that before reading Marcia's snippets and I SO appreciate it!! (& I appreciate the work her boys do. ❤) #backtheblue

I really enjoyed this book it had a humanized wolf (dog) (read the author's notes) Prince. A real-life humanized butterfly fairy princess, a monk prince, and secrets, etc. I loved it!

Other years
Marcia struck gold here! I have to admit I miss her deep books and I know she had deep emotional trials writing this (because I read her author's notes) I bleed through her writing and I felt it. It made the book so much better. Not that I want her to go through pain to write deep books but she is so good at it!

Nannette and Balian are amazing in this unique love story. It is its own unique and original wolf story. I love that she is a butterfly princess.

Fun read and quick escape. I love the fairy tale element and the interactions of the main characters with their animals. I was interested to read about the menagerie at the London tower that inspired the menagerie in this book. Author notes are such a fun way to learn about the inspiration behind these stories. I struggled a little bit with the flowery language. I'm not sure why I noticed that more this time. Overall the story was terrific. Medieval time and settings are some of my favorites. Strong characters that fight to defend homeland and family are inspiring and sigh worthy.

Love Marcia's books!

She is one of the earliest authors I read where my love for clean romance started. No one I have read quite does it like her- which makes her books all the more a delight to read! This book took me to a different world and I loved the relationships made and described throughout. A cute read!!!

I took the plunge!

I finally gave in and purchased The Wolf King. I was not disappointed! When I did my review of the sample I gave it 4 stars, because how can you give a mere sample 5? Yet, I was so intrigued with the characters and the circumstance of their introduction, I had to read more. The Wolf King was a great little story, with a solid plot, and wonderful characters. At first there seemed to be a supernatural element, with the buterflies and wolves, but it was just a unique hook to draw the reader into the story. Well done.

Love it!

Another amazing read from Marcia! I loved that this one was more in the mind of the male main character than the female, but still presented her point of view. I loved the book. Its a light, easy read that will capture you right from the start! As crazy as it sounds I've put off reading this for months, because I didn't want to finish it, and once I started it I knew I would finish in a few days. I love being in Marcia's worlds and am sad when the books end!

I really wanted to love this but it just didn't quite do it for me. I'm happy I read it but I wish that Marcia would write her stories with same voice that she writes her author notes. She is a good writer but sometimes her stories tend to be too sappy with overdone flowery speech.

What a fantastic, medieval story. It felt almost like a fairy tale with the wolves, lions, and butterflies. This was a refreshing break from my normal go-to of Regency Romance. I can always count on Marcia Lynn McClure's stories to be fun, engaging, a little whimsical, and sweet. And oh, those yummy kisses.

Balian is everything you want in a hero; strong, handsome, honorable, and tender with his butterfly princess. Minnette is everything lovely, kind, and sweet.

One of my favorite aspects of this story is Balian's love and care for his brother Phillip.

Romance - Mostly Clean (passionate kissing 💋)
Language - None
Violence - Mild

Finally back to the old Marcia books! (Well mostly)! I was so happy there was less "preaching" in this book. It seems like some of her newer books don't really have a story just the characters preaching to you about one thing or another! I gave it four stars because of the wording in the book. I wasn't a huge fan of how she tried to talk in the book. And the author was trying to use way too big of words for a book like this! But I really am excited that it was finally back to a good story!!

What's there not to love about this book? I am a sucker for any type of knight, so I was really looking forward to this one! And adding the beautiful white wolves was just perfection! Add that to a wonderful romance story and you have a blissful escape into the land Marcia expertly creates in each and every book! I was so happy to have this copy in my hand to enjoy! And I will. Over and over again!

Fun read

I enjoyed this storyline most of the time. The beginning and first half of the book was fantastic. It kept me enthralled and I couldn't put it down. There was in a portion towards the end that I was lost. The dialogue seemed to be in a contest for the most gag worthy saccharine infused over the top interactions. It was not needed. I will still read her other stories. Overall a great storyline.

I think I like Marcia as a person... she seems so witty and fun... but I think I'm tired of perfect maidens and perfect princes... Probably why I liked Dusty Britches so much. Anyway, the characters weren't very dimensional and so much more could have happened in the story to really bring it to life!

Setting: Awesome.
Plot: Pretty awesome, but could have created more of an adventure/romance novel, which would have been fun.
Characters: Bleh. Favorite character was Thor.

I really enjoyed Balian and Phillip's relationship as well as how quickly Balian and Minette grew to care for one another. This definitely feels more like Balian's story, rather than Minnette's, and I liked that! He is a kind, thoughtful, valiant hero who works hard to take care of his kingdom and make things right. And the romance is always so good!

This is a wonderful book with mystery, great characters, wolves and lions. Love how the butterflies always congregate ok the main characters shoulders and head! It was also so wordy and I kind of skipped over some of the big wordy spots. Understand the explaining what they are thinking and feeling. It took me longer than usual to finish a book. The lions, wolves (one of my favorite animals), and butterflies was a wonderful idea in a book. Love how family members fight for the right for the other family members even if they are not the same after an accident. Wonderful book!

Fun plot only par on the romace

It has a cute idea for a story line but it isn't the BEST of Marcia. It is creative and definitely intriguing for the plot; however the kisses and the extremely romantic feelings that she usually creates so well are lacking. You can get awww moments but not so much the butterflies in your stomach that you've come to expect when reading a book from her. I dont mind having read it. It was enjoyable. But not amazing.

I like Marcia's fantasy novels far more than her contemporary. This one had an intriguing story line I wished she had expanded on. The romance was typical Marcia-lots of kisses and swooning, but not much on depth.

I think I am sadly outgrowing MLM books, they are just getting a little too sappy for me. Some parts were good and engaging, but others... but I finished it, so that is saying something.

I loved the relationship between Balian and Phillip. I really disliked how vain their father had become and how poorly he treated their mother. The story was entertaining.

I love the wolves in this book. I like that it is A guy story. That was different coming from Marcia but I really liked it. I felt a connection with Balain and Phillip. What a great story of brothers and their love for each other.
I loved the fairy tale feel with the butterflies and lions and the wolves.
Very fast and easy read that I liked very much. Great read
