One skill that all students need in abundance is that of listening. Yet many do not listen as productively as they might and it is rare for them to be given any guidance in how to do so. As a result, what they pick up from lecturers and other speakers is often patchy or surface level learning that fails to identify all the main ideas the speaker was trying to convey.

So, my first two chapters in this book aim to discuss with you what is involved in listening selectively, actively and critically. This should aid your prowess as a learner who can not merely report much of what speakers had to say but also (since you’ve listened selectively, actively and critically) identify their main ideas and use them to say something interesting of your own.

The third chapter switches to a different but related issue — how to make NOTES that you'll actually get some use out of.
