Engagements Can be Deadly

Rate this book
My name is Brannon "Bran" Walker. I'm a private investigator, hired by Millicent Ashley's father to do a background check on her fiance, Tom Grant. Then Millie dies under suspicious circumstances during the engagement party for her and Tom--a party I attended. Murder? I think so, and I intend to prove it.

Duncan "Dunc" Raines, the lead detective in the case--and my ex-lover--tells me to keep my nose out of his investigation. No surprise, I ignore his order--and try to ignore him--as I begin digging into who might have decided a dead fiancee is preferable to a living bride. Suspects are numerous, and someone wants me to stop looking for the murderer, if they have to kill me to make that happen. As if. I intend to show Dunc that a PI can be just as good as a cop at uncovering a killer.

Born and bred Cleveland, I earned a degree in technical theater, later switched to costuming, and headed to NYC. Finally seeing the futility of trying to become rich and famous in the Big Apple, I joined VISTA—Volunteers in Service to America—ending up in Chicago for three years. Then it was on to Denver, where I put down roots and worked as a costume designer until I retired in 2007.

I began writing a few years ago after joining an online fanfic group. Two friends and I then started a group for writers, where they could post any story they wished, no matter the genre or content. Since then I've been writing for publication. My first book came out in February of 2011. Most, but not all, of my work is M/M, either mildly erotic or purely 'romantic'. More often than not it involves a mystery or action/adventure, and is sometimes paranormal as well.

Edward Kendrick has done again what he does best....written a murder mystery that will keep you guessing and taking the journey with the two main characters. The story line is strong and pulls you into the chain of events. The main characters are well developed with personalities that enchant you with their personal as well as their professional lives. Brannon (Bran) has been a private detective for years and is currently been hired to check out the background of a man who is about to get married to a wealthy woman. This woman is having their engagement party on a catamaran and is murdered. Bran was in attendance, when his ex, Duncan (Dunc), a police detective, comes onboard to investigate. Dunc tells Bran not to get involved in a police case, but Bran feels since he was hired by the murder victim's father that he must find out who the murderer is. Their past together still grates on each other, but they both find out that their joint efforts are getting them further than they are by themselves. Plus Dunc realizes Bran is good at what he does which negates what he thought 3 years before. This is a great novel of a "who done it" with two murders not just one. Bran has even been in the sights of the murderers. This is a must read. Detailed in the investigation and yet it hits upon the personal level between Bran and Dunc which seems to be struggling bringing them back together. Refreshing to see these two lives come back together in a realistic kind of way. Don't miss it.

2.5 stars - More of a mystery than a romance, but still an enjoyable read. Would've rated it higher if I'd felt more of a connection between Bran and Duncan.
