Sleep, it was a luxury I didn’t have. I could hear it then, in the dark light of night, in the dusky morning… The click of the trigger, the smell of her blood, the sound of the rain. I never thought I would see her again. She was a ghost. She was dead. When Maggie Wright pushed her way into my life, she brought the phantom with her, and I was helpless to her pull. Everything I had, all of it, had been taken from me ten years ago. I had nothing but the shirt on my back, the memories that still burned through my veins, and the regret I drowned in every day. I am Ryan Hartford...and I have nothing left to Grief, Loss of a child.
A.M. Johnson lives in Utah with her family where she works as a full-time nurse. If she’s not at the hockey rink with her kiddos, you’ll find her buried in a book or behind the keyboard. She loves romance and all things passionate. Amanda enjoys exploring all genres and bringing life to the human experience.
Oh my word!! The cover of this book says a lot already. So I went into this read knowing it was going to be a tear jerker. But as I was reading and learning more about how and why this story becomes. I not only cried but was angry about a character and the wrongs that caused this devastating story. I love this Authors writing skills. She doesn't just write words for a story she gives us the visualizations in our head. I am so happy this story gives us an epilogue with an extension epilogue. This is a must read.
This is a beautiful, sweet and emotional story. From the very beginning I wanted to cry it was sad reading about Ryan's past. I fell hard for both the characters and I couldn't stop myself from wanting them to be together!
Ryan and Maggie are both broken, each of them for different reasons. But once these two meet you see how they slowly try for something more. At first they are sweet with each other and then you can see their connection and how intense they can be.Their first kiss is something else...
I loved this story and I'm glad I choose to read it since I haven't read a book from this author! Now I'm even more excited to read more from her! If you are looking for an emotional story to melt your hearts, Sacred Hart is perfect!!
*An advance reading copy was generously provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review.*
Sacred Hart was one of those books I knew going in that it'd be an emotional ride. The blurb is pretty clear that this is a book about a man that's suffered the loss of a loved one. Ryan Hartford is our hero and he's one of the saddest, most broken souls I've encountered in a long time. Ryan is a lost shell of a man. He's got not much left in his life after losing what was most precious to him. He's made mistakes and paid the price but looking back, he'd do it all over again except maybe have a better aim... It's when he hops on a Greyhound bus and just "goes" until the route comes to an end that he finds himself travelled from sunny Florida to the wettest part of the U.S.- Washington State. It's a one horse town with a beat up diner and the owner just happens to see something in Ryan that needs healing. So he takes him in, offers him a job...a reason to live.
Life could betray you and make your world spin, but it could also give you back everything you thought you'd lost."
Maggie Wright is also living a lonely life as a single parent when she stumbles upon Ryan at the scene of an accident. Both of them tending to the victims, they have a draw to each other. Is it shared loneliness? Regret? All she knows is Ryan is the saddest, detached man she's ever met. Maybe it's the nurse in her, but she plans to help fix it...make him happy again.
Sacred Hart is just one of those books that makes you feel. Feel extreme empathy and compassion for the characters and a deep rooted desire to see their happily ever after. I didn't know if Ryan had it in him to be saved but dear Maggie and her adorable daughter didn't give up trying. Chip after chip, the walls of pain crumbled. My heart bled for this guy and I knew he deserved the chance again for happiness. This book is about second chances in life. Second chances not only for happiness but for love... and for family. Heartfelt is the one word I'd use to describe this book.
A.M. Johnson knows how to tug at the heartstrings and I found myself thinking how much more pain can this man endure! I may have been silently cursing her that if I didn't get some semblance of a happily ever after, I was going to stalk her until she made it right! And, rest assured, she makes it right!
I'd highly recommend Sacred Hart for readers looking for the emotional side of romantic reads. Light on steam but heavy on emotion. A first time for me with this author but I look forward to more reads from her in the future.

Overall Opinion: This was just ok for me. It did tap into my emotions and made me tear up a few times, but I don't think it'll go on my favorites shelf. I thought the storyline was touching, as it was a second chance at happiness for both of the mcs after both having bad luck with their last partners. I felt like it became way too mushy once they started to develop stronger feelings, and it also seemed repetitive in the mushiness at times. I felt like that dialogue and inner thoughts took up space in the book where something else could've been happening -- kind of like it was used as filler to get us to the conflict or something. I'm sure lots of people will be just fine with this super sweet, sometimes sad book that is full of hope for the couple to get their happiness after some hard times.
Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Maggie and Ryan's story. Ryan experienced a horrible trauma and found himself in jail for 10 years. He then hops on a bus and goes to the end of the line in a small town, and he ends up working at an old diner and barely surviving through his grief. Maggie and her young daughter go into the diner one night, and meet Ryan. They are instantly connected and start spending more time together. After some resistance and past demons to conquer, they fall in love. There are some sweet and sad times...and they get a HEA ending.
POV: This alternated between Maggie and Ryan's POV.
Overall Pace of Story: Ok. I did skim some during the overly mushy parts (IMO), as well as the parts that seemed repetitive.
Instalove: No. I felt like it was quick, but not instalove.
H rating: 4 stars. Ryan. I liked him. I felt horrible for what he went through, but I appreciated how he was all in with Maggie.
h rating: 3.5 stars. Maggie. She was sweet, and appreciated how she rolled with the punches. I did feel like it was kind of odd how she allowed her daughter to get close to the H before really knowing him.
Sadness level: Moderate. I did tear up a few times, but I never turned into an ugly cry. It does cover some really heavy subjects that might be considered too much for some readers **BIG spoilers here**
Push/Pull: Yes, but not for long.
Heat level: Low. The scenes were to further their connection, and I don't think they were necessarily there to be sexy.
Descriptive sex: Yes and no, but I'm leaning more towards no. The scenes were more focused on the feelings and emotions of the act instead of what was physically going on.
Safe sex: Not really. No mention of it during the scenes, but some side mention of h taking birth control. I don't remember any mention of past practices for either the h or H.
OW/OM drama: Yes, but really mild and by memory.
Sex scene with OW or OM: No
Cheating: No
Separation: Yes, but really short
Possible Triggers: Yes
Closure: This had good closure with 2 jump ahead epilogues and a HEA.
How I got it: It was part of my kindle unlimited subscription.
Up till the second (and totally shitty) second epilogue that I hate with a passion, this was almost a 5 star read. Then the second shitty epilogue brings the news that . Totally NOT how I want a truly fab romance to end.
Gutted and pissed.

WHAT AN ABSOLUTE PLEASURE, reading this book was. I loved it. It was a beautiful story of Life, finding beauty in the chaos that life throws your way. Its about loss and heartbreak. Its about LOVE and HOPE. And in the end, for me, its about FAMILY.
Ryan has spent the last 10 years in prison, after suffering a great tragedy in his life. He's learned to rely on no one but himself, learned to put his head down, do his work, serve his time, and keep to himself. While he's not "happy" with this, he's come to terms with the cards he's been dealt and isn't looking to rock the boat, the last thing he wants to do is open expose his heart and be vulnerable.
Then Came Maggie...
Maggie is this beautiful ray of sunshine. She lives in a small town with her lovely daughter, Beth (Bee). They are two peas in a cute little blonde pod. Maggie is happy and full of light. She is a nurse and has made a happy little life for herself and her daughter. She isn't looking for change, or love for that matter, until she met Ryan Hartford.
This book... when it was dark it was painfully dark, when it was happy it was the SWEETEST, when it was hot it was hot as fuck. A.M. Johnson did not hold back with this book, she left it all on the page. And it was BEAUTIFUL. I absolutely loved it. Loved everything about it, but my favorite thing about it was the story of FAMILY.
To say this book was emotional for me would be a complete understatement. I am being very cautious about my review because I wouldn't want to ruin it for anyone. Ryan's whole world is devastated because of careless actions of someone he cared about. Life as he knew it ceased to exist. After his circumstances change, he moves as far away from his old life as he can. He finds himself in a small town in Washington where he meets his future, Maggie, and her adorable daughter Beth (Bee). Maggie and "Bee" help Ryan deal with his past and try to help him be whole again. This is a story about healing and recovering after life altering situations. The love that Maggie shows Ryan by not giving up on him and remaining steadfast in her support was amazing. I really loved this story. Hands down one of the most, if not the most, emotional books I've ever read! if I could give it more than 5 stars I would!
I don't even know where to begin. I am literally at a loss for words after reading this heart breakingly beautiful book!!! Ryan Hartford has literally taken my heart and soul and ran away with it. The pain this man went through, the life he led before he finally met Maggie and built his life with her was just gut wrenching! My heart just broke for him at every turn! But his love for Maggie and Beth, actually, their love for EACH other was just beautiful to read! And as it grew, and their relationship became strong, and he opened up to the the fact that he could move on from his past, I just knew something was bound to happen!!! The story was just too beautiful for it not to! And of course, it does and GAHHHH MY HEART!! I can't even deal with the ENDING!!! I completely broke down!!!!!
Amanda Johnson completely blew it out of the PARK with that epilogue!!! At first I'm all smiles and Awwwwwww's and then I'm flippin balling my eyes out and I have Kleenex everywhere and I just don't know how I'm going to move on from that beautiful heart break!!!! Because that's what will happen, your heart will break in the most beautiful way!! This story isn't just about dealing with heartbreak but it's about hope and second chances and a love so pure and rare it will completely OWN YOU!!! and I will forever and always keep this book, it's beautiful words and most importantly Ryan Hartford in my heart until the day I flippin die and I can't wait to make it a permanent display on my book shelf!!! 5 amazing stars!!!!
Review: I was hooked right from the start! Seriously, the prologue in this book is one of the strongest prologues I have ever read. It had me choked up and emotional. I not only wanted but needed to know what happened next for Ryan. A.M Johnson did not fail to deliver a heart breaking yet beautiful story that will consume you and make you believe that no matter how broken you think you may be, there is always someone, somewhere that will be the missing piece to your puzzle.(I dare you to tell me that you wouldn't eat that shit up!) #TeamHopelessRomantic It's no secret that I'm obsessed with this author's writing. She has always managed to deliver a 5 star read for me and Sacred Hart was no different. It's been days and I'm still carrying the emotion this book had evoked in me. Once you read it, you will understand. I know I'm not saying much in this review but there's a reason for that. This book is definitely a story that you should go into it blind. It's the only way to get the full experience that the author intended the reader to have. Please stay away from spoilers!!! I will say that just when you thought the author was ending the story brilliantly, she goes and gives you an epilogue that was nothing less than perfection. From Birdie to Honey Bee. From fishing trip's to alter's, this book was truly inspiring!
What an incredible story! Reading and listening to the audiobook of this really heightened all of the emotions. Teddy Hamilton and Vanessa Edwin both gave amazing performances, but Teddy Hamilton really stole the show as Ryan. He was able to really make me feel all the anger, pain, hope, and happiness warring inside of Ryan as he allowed himself to love and live again.
One of my favorite things about this book (and about every AM Johnson book I have read so far) is how relatable the characters and situations are. Nothing is black and white, and though it's painful watching our characters struggle, it's also so rewarding when they come through to the other side. Have those tissues ready (seriously, the prologue is quite the doozy!) A part that really hit home for me, was when Ryan awakens after getting a glimpse of his future courtesy of Belle. It was such an emotionally gripping moment in the book and that sequence really grabbed my heart. It was the perfect combination of the past and present coming together and moving towards the future.
Don't miss this heartbreakingly beautiful book about loss, forgiveness, love, family, and ultimately, hope.
Sacred Hart was my first A.M. Johnson read and from the moment I read the blurb, I knew I had to read this book. I had no real idea of the story I was getting ready to start. The blurb was intriguing, but vague. The cover made me wonder how a child would come into play, would it be the cause of our hero’s damnation or his salvation. So I dove in and just let it happen. I let this story consume me in the few hours it took me to read the first word until the very last one.
Ryan had everything, although he was struggling financially, with a wife and a daughter he adored, he still had it all. Until he didn’t. One night, one accident and a betrayal all led to Ryan not only losing everything that he lived for, it cost him ten years of his life. Now free from one prison, but still caught up in the one moment that changed his entire life, he goes as far away from his hometown as he can possibly get and moves through his new life, barely living. Barely breathing.
When Ryan first lays eyes on Beth he thinks he’s seeing a ghost. The little girl looks so much like his Belle, but older. It isn’t until he meets Maggie, her mother that his heart begins to beat again, to a new rhythm. As Maggie worms her way into his life, he begins to let her see the brokenness that lives beneath the surface. Knowing that he can’t give her much, but realizing that he wants to give these two girls every piece he has left, Ryan and Maggie begin their journey.
This was a heartbreaking story. I bawled like a baby. Not just for Ryan and what he lost, but for Maggie and her losses – for how these two found each other and helped one another heal. A emotionally charged read that although was not a steamy between the sheets romance, it was a pure love story where your heart raced and soared.
I felt this story so deeply as I read it, AM Johnson did an amazing job, painting such a vivid image and allowing you to fall into this story. A touching and heartwarming story of second chance, learning to move on and finding a way to heal from the worst heartbreak a person can face. For readers who want to dive into the deep end of the pool of emotions, this is your book. There is no way to escape the feels this one has in store for you. You will get chills, you will cry your eyes out and you will be given hope.
"Life could betray you and make your world spin, but it could also give you back everything you thought you'd lost."
Oh, how I adore this book! Sacred Hart is such a quiet and simple story. It's the beautiful tale of Ryan Hartford and his journey of healing, redemption and forgiveness. He has been through what no one should ever deal with. This is the story of how he picks up the pieces that the tragic destruction left in its aftermath.
"I had a future, and it was a gift to live it. I couldn't dwell in futures that didn't happen or tragedies past. It would only make the air I was blessed to breathe murky, and I wanted more than a dishwater gray life."
I don't want to give away details of this book, it should be enjoyed as it unfolds. I loved the characters, the small town diner (Tony was my favorite!), Maggie, Beth and her superheroes. Everyone played a part in Ryan's life and each person's impact was monumental to him in a significant way.
The first book I read by AM Johnson was Beneath the Vine (written as Lillian Bryant) and I was blown away by that story. This story is a complete 180 from BtV, but it shows the tremendous talent this author has in weaving a tale that completely captivates me in an entirely different way. Her writing is fantastic, her stories are refreshing. Whether she's writing erotica or contemporary romance, I will no doubt read anything and everything she ever publishes!! I cannot recommend her books enough.
This is the love story of Ryan and Maggie. Ryan, just recently released from a ten-year stint in prison, gets on a bus and rides as far as the driver takes him. Where he ends up is small-town USA as he is offered a job working at the local diner owned by an older gentleman who decides to give Ryan a chance to get back on his feet. Ryan suffered a horrific trauma that resulted in his serving time in prison as he totally lost control during a painful situation. While now working at the diner, a car accident occurs and Ryan unknowingly meets the love of his life, Maggie, an ER nurse. Ryan, a former EMT, helps Maggie try to save the victims of the crash and that’s how they begin their love story. Ryan, though, knows that he will never be able to give Maggie his heart. It’s broken beyond repair. And, he doesn’t want to give her false hope. He doesn’t want her waiting around for something that will just never happen. But, Maggie is relentless. She sees something in Ryan that is just peaceful. So, along with her young daughter, Beth, they visit the diner more and more.
This is a feel-good book that offered two tender-hearted and caring people a chance to begin their lives’ again. Their love story was sweet and beautiful. It showed their reslience to persevere through the toughest times. Maggie’s life was not without heartbreak either. After finding herself in a difficult position when her ex-boyfriend doesn’t want any part of her dire situation of an unplanned pregnancy, she finds herself returning home to that small town where her parents still reside. But, something tragic happens, and she once again finds herself alone with a young child to raise. Ryan just happens to come along at the perfect time in her life just as she’s finding herself willing to live again. They’re perfect together, and it makes for a mere magical sort-of fairytale. There’s so much emotion and delight within the pages of this book. Cute little Beth was just joy! She was funny and a darling, and had Ryan eating right out of the palm of her hand. There were some town characters that were loyal and supportive. The diner owner, Tony was a great guy! He was not one to judge, and he gave Ryan a second chance as he ended up treating him more like a son. And, Maggie’s friend, Laurie, was also a big support system as she wanted Maggie to find that special someone.
There’s not the hot and heavy intimacy between the characters that is present in an erotic novel. But, that’s okay because there was more emotional intimacy. More about feelings than actions. It was just a beautiful affair of the heart. There was some sadness, and I did shed a tear or two, but it was very satisfying to see two deserving individuals find their soulmate. A.M. Johnson really knows how to suck the reader into the story while writing an exquisite romance!
“He was a mighty wave, and I was the fragile sandy shore being pulled into his depths.” ~ Maggie (Chap.11)
“So you think...you think you love this guy? (Laurie speaking) “He’s all I’ve ever wanted for myself. He’s chivalry and tender kisses. He’s the kind of guy that would go to hell and back for me. He’d freeze in the snow if it gave me warmth. He’d drown before he let Beth and me sink. He’s the one, Laurie...I know it...I freaking feel it, right here.” I brought my hand to my heart. ~ Maggie (Chap. 18)
“Time is a tree (this life one leaf) but love is the sky and I am for you just so long and long enough.” e.e. cummings
Sacred Hart is a very heartbreaking, yet beautiful story of Ryan Hartford's journey to finding love and forgiveness.
You know what? Author A.M. Johnson has made me cry before, and guess what? She's done it again! Sacred Hart is one of those books that will grab all your senses as early as Prologue. Yep, that early.
Each of this author's word will mark your heart. The characters are flawed and broken, but Ms. Johnson was able to make them shine. Every chapter's full of emotions, I'm not even sure how my heart was able to survive them.
"It was in this very moment... at eight twenty-two in the morning that I, Maggie Wright fell... fell harder than I ever thought possible, in love, with a beautifully broken, unfixable, mess of a man named Ryan Hartford."
The journey with Ryan and Maggie might be heartbreaking and emotional at times, but I loved how they made me realize that no matter how broken you are, you are still capable of loving and being loved.
I would really want to share more about this book with you, but I don't want to be spoiling it even a bit. More feels if you read this blindly, I promise! It will hurt you but mend you eventually. Just hang on and accept all the emotions AM Johnson throws at you, k? It'll be one of the best reads you'll have ever have!
To AM Johnson, you're getting better and better every time you publish! Can't wait for what you have for us next!
From the heartbreak to the struggle and then the learning to open up and love again. There is nothing like it. The warm fuzzies you get when you’re happy for a character because you just wanted them to get everything.
Ryan was everything I just said. His story broke my heart but it also filled it to. He had to go through the ugly parts of love to get to the really wonderful parts.
Maggie and Beth didn’t know it until it happened that their lives would be changed in a meeting. I loved that it wasn’t instant it wasn’t omg love at first sight, it was exactly how it was supposed to happen. I can’t even with how much I feel right now.
The ending ... wow ... so very good.
The narration, fantastic you couldn’t ask for better narrators.
*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*
This story will bring on the water works. It's heartbreaking and fantastic all in one book. Ryan went through the a horrible event that changed his life completely for 10 years to make a change and move to somewhere new and start fresh. My heart shattered for him, but so glad when Maggie came into his life with Beth. The story was beautifully written and I am have to say A.M. Johnson out her heart and soul into this book! Must read!
I absolutely loved this book. It was nothing like I expected it to be. I wasn't expecting to cry as much as I did. This book broke my heart many times. Be prepared, this isn't a light read book...
Ryan Hartford was an EMT, a husband, a father and now had nothing more to lose. He lost his daughter. Then 10 yrs of his life. For shooting someone. Now fresh out of prison he boards a bus and takes it as far as it goes and the memories that haunt his days. (The prologue is perfect destruction)
Now living in Washington and a small town, he is a cook at a diner. at a fair he sees a ghost of his daughter in the crowd. An accident in front of the diner he works at and lives behind thrust him into the world of Maggie Wright and her daughter who has a striking resemblance to his lost daughter.
Maggie is drawn to the broken man he is because she see the man hiding inside yearning to be free. Slowly with the help of her daughter they chip away at the walls her has built. Help him see his past & his daughter in a new light one of reflection and not hurt & pain.
Just when things are brightest another storm with arise and in this storm someone may not survive. This will risk everything. Everything they have found and want at the same time proving to themselves what they want and need.
This book is an epic roller coaster. Sadness than fierce anger. Melancholy than hope. Laughter tan fear. Weariness than love. This books was sooooooooo good!
Ryan stole my heart. He was broken and simply going through the motions of life until he met Maggie. Her and her daughter Beth were able to patch the shattered pieces of his soul back together enough to make his heart beat again. They helped him live, they helped ease his anger and pain.
This book completely took me by surprise. I was 100% not expecting to be as emotionally invested as I became. I have to admit that I have another book by this author but have yet to read it and I'm seriously kicking myself in the ass for that. If it drawls half of the emotion out of me that this book did, then I've seriously been depriving myself. With that being said, A.M. Johnson would technically be considered a new to me author. And wow, what a fabulous way to start.
I'm going to keep this as spoiler free as possible. I went into this blind and it was honestly the best decision I could have made. I think everyone should experience this with a clean slate. Without any preconceived notions.
Ryan Hartford had a horrific situation 10 years ago that left him with nothing. That time was full of hopelessness and loss that he could never overcome. When circumstances causes him to start over in a new place, he tries to stick to himself. He wants to be left alone and continues to be haunted by his past. His grief never allowing him to fully move forward. That is until one woman continues to push her way into his life. Will anything or anyone ever be able to help Ryan face his past and move forward?
"She was lighting fires that should stay extinguished."
First of all, I absolutely loved the writing. It flowed effortlessly. Everything had a meaning and everything was tied in perfectly. There was the perfect balance of full circle and the detail was consistent during it.
Now let's talk about my beloved Ryan. That's right. He's mine. He's so different from the alpha males that I'm used to. Don't get me wrong, I love my alphas. But there's just something so different with Ryan. He's rough yet soft. He's a honest, hard-worker who has only ever wanted a family to love. Here's where my emotional investment starts. I liked Ryan from the beginning. I just didn't catch on to the slow build in my heart and my feelings towards him. Then out of no-where I'm so far gone I don't even know what happened.
I truly loved every character in this book. Each one had their own place and they brought their own uniqueness to the story. I think that ultimate pushed me over with the emotions. I seriously was invested in each and every one of them. I felt everything they were going through. I was happy, scared, loved, loving, hurting, etc right along with them. It honestly took me by surprise.
"Maggie was like the needle of a compass. No matter how hard I tried to get lost inside myself, she pulled me north, up. toward the light...toward her."
I really tried to keep this as clean as possible. I can't say much more. Just jump in and go for it. I think you might just find an unexpected gem.
Ryan Hartford needed a second chance at love and being loved, 10 years has been ripped out of his life and he is making a new one in the state of Washington. Ten years prior, he thought he had it all, a wife and a beautiful daughter named Belle, when tragedy struck and boy did he Ryan pay for that tragedy. After Ryan leaves prison, he decides he wants a whole new life and when he takes the bus to his new life, little did he know how much his life would change.
When Ryan lays eyes on a beautiful little girl named Beth, he thinks he is seeing a ghost of the daughter he lost 10 years ago. Turns out that beautiful girl is Maggie Wright’s daughter. Maggie is an ER nurse and she too has suffered a broken heart. When Maggie and Ryan meet for the first time, you can tell the connection between these two was going to be great. But can two broken people repair their hearts?
From the Prologue to the Epilogue, the author sucked me in and I needed to know if Ryan and Maggie will get their redemption. This is my second A.M. Johnson book and she did not disappoint. This book was different from what I have read and I loved that. I may have cried several times reading Sacred Hart and so will you. I am not going to give much away, you all need to read this beautifully written book. Have tissues ready.
*An ARC was provided by the author for an honest review.
My favourite thing about having read the majority of A.M. Johnson’s books is that every time a new book is announced, I get giddy and excited knowing that whatever the story is, wherever her characters take me, its going to be great. A.M. Johnson challenges herself as a writer, writing what is in her heart and soul, Johnson pushes herself beyond all boundaries and expectations. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Her latest novel, Sacred Hart is no different. In a perfect blend of complexity, depth and honesty, A.M. Johnson’s execution of Ryan Hartford’s story is poignant, genuine, and devastatingly beautiful.
Sacred Hart is filled with hard truths and heavy realities, opening with a gut–wrenching prologue, this story is not for the faint hearted. Delving deep into death, heartache and regret, readers are instantly aware of how broken Ryan Hartford really is. Moving from his hometown, the change in scenery does nothing to dull his heartache. The cloud of darkness hovers and his past threatens to swallow him whole; until he meets Maggie Wright. Wearing her heart on her sleeve Maggie Wright feels connected to Ryan instantly. Watching him walk around with a heavy heart, she pushes her insecurities aside and patiently knocks the wall down from around his heart.
Told in alternate point of views readers become familiar with both Ryan and Maggie. Their past, their present and what they want for their futures are fluently written throughout the chapters. With hearts torn open and emotions running rampant on the pages, Sacred Hart is a captivating depiction of love, loss and redemption. Focusing more on the depth and direction of this journey, instead of the destination, Johnson writes of a love that endures all things. Keeping to a realistic pace readers are immersed in a kaleidoscope of feelings, allowing each highlight of the journey to be felt, deeply; Sacred Hart is a beautiful marriage of hurt and hope.
Once again A.M. Johnson has blown me away. Talented and dedicated, nothing but pure love, blood, sweat and tears shines from within this book. Bringing to life pain and peace, A.M. Johnson uses Ryan Hartford, Maggie Wright and everything else in between to create a memorable and moving tale of second chances. A reminder to live and love, this is a story you don’t want to miss.
Ouch my heart!!! Please bear with me while I try to mend it. While I didn't cry like I expected to, it was still full of sadness and happiness.
Ryan Hartford you are on my book boyfriend list. Despite his mistakes and heartache he's still very real. Ryan has suffered a tremendous loss and in the heat of passion makes a life altering mistake.
Maggie was a single mom and nurse looking out for her daughter. This is the story of how they came to be.
A Greyhound bus drops Ryan off in a small town up north and Maggie works at the local hospital as a triage nurse.
Trying not to give too much away, there is a series of tragedies in this book but under it all it's about redemption and love and grabbing life while you have it. It made my heart happy and sad.
At times Ryan almost seemed too unreal, but he didn't have this stash of money or rich parents so he worked hard to make it in life and that was refreshing.
I adored Maggie's optimism. Despite the crap that happened to her that led her to the same small town she persevered. I related to her because I was a Maggie. She had good friends who helped her in her life. Tony the diner owner was the best. He loved them both like they were his kids. He had such a huge heart.
If you're looking for heartwarming and a heartbreaking ride this is the book for you. Beware of the epilogue though. It will get you in the feels.
Prologue….one simple word yet this is where I was hooked! I was in tears, shocked and ready to keep reading. Sacred Hart by AM Johnson gave me the feels time and time again. As I am sitting down to write this, I’m going through my notes and highlights and I’m crying all over again. It has taken be awhile to come back to be able to write this because I knew I would get emotional.
Ryan suffered a tragic loss and had a rough 10 years following it. Starting over and keeping to himself became his new routine. Until Maggie came along and changed that. What started out as a friendship turns into so much more.
He held my gaze, and the way he watched me – like I was something to memorize, like he hadn’t seen anything like it before – caused each breath, each beat of my pulse to rise.
Ryan speaks with his expressions over words, Maggie can tell just what he is feeling and thinking without him ever speaking. The slow evolution of this relationship was real, both suffering from their pasts and secrets but trying to overcome it.
Maggie was like the needle of a compass. No matter how hard I tried to get lost inside myself, she pulled me north, up, toward the light….toward her.
The flow and development and the wiggling their way into each others lives was so well written. It was laid back, fun and sweet while still keeping me guessing and anxious. I fell in love with how perfect Maggie and Ryan are for each other.
There were no words exchanged, it was just a glance, a shift in the air, a simmered pot about to boil over, a simple moment that weighed a thousand times more than any I love you.
At one point in this story I stopped breathing, gasped for air because I was shocked yet again. The tears fell as the kindle fell to my lap. My heart was breaking, I prayed that in the end it would all be ok….it just had to be. AM Johnson, thank you for giving us this love story laced with tragedy and maturity, lust and passion and so many emotions.
From the prologue, to the epilogue this book takes you on an emotional ride, it slowly seeps into your heart, and tugs at it until you have nothing left. The characters are beautiful, they're broken, but you're constantly wanting them to have their second chance. You're pulled into their lives like you're part of it, and you feel all the heartache, joy, and anguish they do.
Ryan is an incredible character and his life is far from perfect, he was dealt a terrible tragedy, and this is his story. A story of second chances, a story of acceptance, and ultimately a story of looking forward, living in the present and giving life and love a chance.
Maggie was such a beautiful, kind soul that you just want to see her happy. You want her to find that love that she never had, and you want her to keep fighting for Ryan, no matter how stubborn he is.
I don't want to say more, because this is a book that you need to go into blindly and feel your way through. Literally!
This story will weave it's way into your heart, keep hold of it until the very last page. If you love a book crammed with emotion, love, pain, heartache, and joy, then go and one click this now. And don't forget the tissues, you'll be needing them!!
Amanda absolutely killed it with this, and I must say it's etched it's way as one of my favorites of hers next to Beneath the Vine.
When two people collide and you witness every step taken just so they could see the light together…you feel every emotion in each of those steps…A.M. Johnson had a distinct way of eliciting beautiful sensations from the characters to the reader, making you feel as if you are breathing the same air. I felt all there is to experience in this book. I smiled and teared up from every kiss, every touch, and every word uttered. Some parts might be cheesy for others, but to me they were fitting. The pasts were woven with the presents in a way that’s surprising and unpredictable.
Ryan Hartford was truly the core of this book, I wanted to hold him and bury him in my arms. I was so proud of the man he was and has become. Now I know for sure that this male character will always be a staple in my heart. Maggie’s support and love for this man was unbridled and I wouldn't change a damn thing about her.
Secretly I wanted a book two of this story, but the uniquely surreal epilogue eventually sealed it. To me, the last few sentences of this book were similar to a legacy. This is a poignant contemporary romance that pulls you to step back and get a good look at how you are leading your life. A story you can always turn to and get tokens of how GOOD life is and how FAMILY is EVERYTHING. HART-felt in every way Ms. Johnson! (Clapping with standing ovation)
