In the second Rogue Vows novella, the town of Solitude, Oregon, will learn that good TV makes for terrible reality. The first in this series is DEATH AND HER DEVOTION by KENDRA ELLIOT.
In the first book, a celebrity was found murdered in a nearby campground. The confessed killer is abducted on the way to jail and Detective Seth Harding must find both the killer and the kidnapper.
I hesitate to say too much. I don't want to give away what happened in the first book. I always suggest reading series books in order .. in this instance, it's a must.
The characters are great .... and there is one, especially, that really knocked me for a loop. There's lot of action and many of the same characters from the first book.
This is a short, easy read, guaranteed to keep you glued to the pages until the very surprising end. 4 Stars for the book ... 5 stars for the series.
Many thanks to the author / Amazon Publishing / Netgalley who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
It was an entertaining read. I love this world and these characters. I wasn't overly surprised at the outcome. There were times I wanted to shake the characters that they could figure out where certain people had gone. And there was a plot hole because the author said at one point all the characters had gotten out their cars, only to have one exit again even though they technically had gotten back in the car. But still, it was short and held my attention. And the narration was great.
The story continues from the celebrity murdered at the campground. As the murderer who has confessed is being transported he is abducted. Now the manhunt begins. Great 2nd part of the story. I would like to thank the Publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this ARC.
For those who read the Rogue River novellas, Death and Her Devotion and Burned by Her Devotion are nice follow up stories to the next phase of the main characters.
Burned by Her Devotion focuses on Zeth and Carly as Zeth picks up the investigation of the murder of Chase Ryan while Zane and Stevie are on their honeymoon. The investigation takes a few interesting twists which I really enjoyed. I also enjoyed seeing Zeth and Carly working together and growing as a couple.
Burned by Her Devotion is such a wild journey in just over 100 pages. There are so many twists and turns as Seth and Carly try to unravel the mystery from the previous novella. The pace is fast and the writing is engaging as always, with quite a bit of action and some lovely character moments.
The element of surprise is still pretty heavy in this and so well done. The mystery has another layer for the characters to uncover and the execution is great. There are some truly shocking moments towards the end, but it all ties together in a really satisfying way. This has been a really fun and quick read!
Burned by Her Devotion is book two in the Rogue Vows series by Melinda Leigh. The small community of Solitude, Oregon was rock by the murder of famous crime TV star Chase Ryan by his friend and assistant Toby Black. However, for Seth, the case became complicated when Toby Black was kidnapper and sheriff deputy badly hurt. On top of that, his wife Carly Taylor became involved when one of her clients went missing from her foster carers home. The readers of Burned by Her Devotion will continue to follow Seth and Carly to find out what happens.
Burned by Her Devotion is another excellent book by Melinda Leigh and I loved it. Melinda Leigh did a fantastic job in portraying her characters and intertwine then throughout the book. Burned by Her Devotion is well written and researched by Melinda Leigh. I engaged with the plot of Burned by Her Devotion from the beginning, and I was unable to put the book down.
The readers of Burned by Her Devotion will learn about the problems that undiagnosed mental illness has on the suffer and everyone around them. Also, the readers of Burned by Her Devotion will learn about the consequences of stalking on everyone involved.
Although not a typical fan of novellas, since I love all the other books from this author I decided to check this out too, so of course I had to go back and read all the other novellas in the series first so I was up to date! Read this book in one short sitting as it was engaging and a nice easy read!
Great mystery - check! Suspense - check! Thrills - check! Romance - check! Character development - check! Satisfying ending - check!
What more could I ask for?
So glad I decided to give this series of novellas a read, I was not at all disappointed as I often am with novellas!
Thanks to Netgalley for an advanced reader copy of this book for an honest review
The Rogue Vows Novellas are a continuation of the story begun in the Rogue River series. Detective Seth Harding is accompanying the detective taking the man who confessed to the murder in the first book to prison. When the police car is side swiped by a transport, the prisoner disappears. Did he escape? Was he rescued or has he been kidnapped?
This short story is continued from the book by Kendra Elliott "Death and Her Devotion". This novella is action packed. I did not put it down from start to finish. The characters were pretty much the same, except for the switch to Detective Seth Harding as the investigating officer and his wife Carly Taylor (Stevie's sister) involved in a child protection case. The story moves quickly and keeps you turning the pages. This was an enjoyable read. This book brings the whole stalker issue, that is facing many celebrities, to the forefront and takes it to the extreme of what could happen. This is a book that can be read in one sitting, but YOU MUST read Death and hHr Devotion first. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that Book #2 of the Rogue Vows series finished up the story of Book #1, but takes us to Seth and Carly while Stevie and Zane are off on their honeymoon!
More stellar writing by Melinda Leigh/Kendra Elliot duo!
Burned by Her Devotion was a great conclusion to the Rogue Vows series picking up right where Death and Her Devotion left off.
With TV star Chase Ryan's murderer in custody, Detective Seth Harding's day should be simple. He just needs to transfer the man to the county jail from Solitude and then he's free to spend time with his family. But when the suspect is abducted during transport, Seth must now find him as well as his kidnapper. With a list of suspects from a sleazy agent to an unhinged stalker, Seth has his work cut out for him. After the daughter of the woman who was stalking Chase goes missing from her temporary foster home, Carly's case becomes intertwined with Seth's. As Seth and Carly track their charges, they find themselves in the path of a dangerous criminal.
We last followed Carly and Seth in Tracks of Her Tears, the first book in the Rogue Winter series, and several months have passed since that book. Carly and Seth have fully reconciled since then and are now living on the Taylor family farm with their daughter. I love how far these two have come since the first book set in Solitude. Their relationship is a lot more open now and they talk out their problems as they come up rather than holding everything in. Seth is now much better about respecting Carly's work which I'm happy about. Overall I am very happy with how the pair's relationship has progressed and I'm looking forward to seeing where they go from here.
The plot in this book picks up directly where the one in Death and Her Devotion ended. Chase's murderer has been caught and after he's transferred, there isn't much left to wrap up. The scene where the suspect was kidnapped was suspenseful and it pulled off in a manner I wasn't expecting. After the kidnapping, Seth has to track down all of the people connected to Chase that are still in town to determine which of them kidnapped Chase's killer. I wasn't surprised by who the culprit was although there were a few twists thrown in that I didn't see coming. The ending was fantastic and I enjoyed the final showdown as well as how the situation was resolved.
Overall Burned by Her Devotion was a suspenseful read that wrapped up the series well and I'm looking forward to picking up the final spin-off series, Rogue Justice.
This sleepy town of Solitude is about to get woken up again as a popular reality TV star who was in town filming his cop show Chase Ryan has turned up murdered and then on top of that, the night before a female stalker tried to bomb and set fire to a barn which contained Carly and Seth's daughter Brianna inside. Brianna is nice and safe and Toby who was Chase's friend and assistant is sitting in prison after confessing to the murder and the stalker is off in the wind. It seems they have things nicely tied up but of course, things are never that simple in Solitude, Oregon as our first incident happens when Seth and his partner are transporting Toby in the back of their squad car and they are hit by a truck. The book then has Seth and his friends on the force hunting down for Toby who is now on the run. Meanwhile, Carly has her hands full as our stalker had a young daughter Alex who has now run away from the home that Carly had placed her in. Carly believes she is on the run to meet up with her mother and in danger. However, what happens when Carly learns that everything was an act and that looks and judgments can be deceiving and she finds herself in danger as someone out there is determined to finish Alex's aka Chase Ryan's last episode as the show finished on a cliffhanger and now Carly and Toby are the main attractions. Burned by her Devotion was another good mystery from Melinda Leigh and if you are looking for a new US Mystery author to add to your reading lists, you won't be disappointed with Melinda Leigh.
This book is the sequel to Death and her devotion. Just when you think its all over, things are about to reach a dramatic conclusion. Chase Ryan's killer is abducted on his way to jail. Someone has their own plans for him. Detective Seth is on the case, he has a killer and a kidnapper to catch. Plenty of twists and turns before reaching a climax. Melinda Leigh keeps you on your toes right to the end. I highly suggest you read these novellas in order. Recommended for fans of romantic suspense. ARC received from net galley in exchange for an honest review.
A great romance suspense/police novella, well written and interesting. It stands alone, even though it's part of a small series with author Kendra Elliott. I would recommend that if you can, read the books in order for the best reading experience. My thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC. Note that I also borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited and listened to the included audio and the narrator was excellent.
This novella's mystery/suspense aspect was stronger than most of the other installments in this series. Now that the angst between the MCs, Carly and Seth, is over, I'm enjoying reading about their relationship a lot. The resolution of the Rogue Vows was surprising and a bit sad. I'm looking forward to reading the next novellas, Rogue Justice.
Burned by Her Devotion by Melinda Leigh is a fantastic and intense finale to the Rogue Vows series, delivering a gripping blend of family drama, small-town secrets, and the dark side of fame. Set in Solitude, Oregon, the story picks up with the murder of TV star Chase Ryan and spirals into a high-stakes investigation full of twists, shocking truths, and a chilling abduction. I loved how the Hollywood glitz clashed with small-town reality, creating nonstop tension. The collaboration between Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot shines—this installment was fast-paced, emotional, and so exciting. A great read and a strong close to the series!
I really fell for Seth in this book, he was good in the previous books but here he will sweep you off your feet repeatedly with his rescues, his determination and finally his understanding of Carly's job and her drive. I love this series, Seth, Carly, Zane, Stevie and all the support cast of Solitude! I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
Melinda Leigh’s BURNED BY HER DEVOTION is a gripping story affecting the citizens of Solitude, Oregon as they are still dealing with the aftermath of the murder of TV star Chase Ryan. Her storyline touches on manipulation, attempted murder, arson, and kidnapping. Leigh’s protagonists Seth Harding and his wife find themselves in the middle of unfolding events including ongoing investigations of the murdered TV star, the destruction of The Grange by an arsonist, two attempted murders and deranged stalker.
Leigh’s storyline continues moving at lightning speed when a semi-truck runs the two patrol cars transporting the confessed murderer of TV star Chase Ryan off the road. Seth determines the attack on both cars was intentional in order to kidnap the killer. The town of Solitude is still coming to terms with new events connected to the murder and the work of the arsonist. The author introduces support characters both good and evil describing their roles in her story. While Seth is continuing the investigation into the murder, kidnapping, and the arsonist, he uncovers dark secrets of the deceased TV star, creating a list of suspects that include his family, friends, his outspoken agent, and a deranged stalker. The murder investigation overlaps Carly’s investigation of the troubled daughter abandoned by the missing stalker.
The storyline’s pace never slows down keeping readers on their toes challenging them to keep up with each of the curve balls Leigh throws into the mix. Seth’s investigation uncovers clues leading to new dangers and motives. Leigh changes direction of her storyline moving towards the gut-wrenching climax placing Seth and Carly in danger. The author keeps readers’ interest high as she builds up to her explosive ending. BURNED BY HER DEVOTION delivers a fast moving mystery while at the same time adding a little romance and Taylor family time.
We pick up where Death and Her Devotion (Rogue Vows #1) left off. Police Chief Zane Duncan & his new wife Stevie have left for there honeymoon leaving Sheriff Detective Seth Harding watching over the confessed murderer. Seth has a gut feeling that Toby isn't the murderer even though he's confessed to murdering TV star Chase Ryan. As Toby is transported to a larger facility, a black semi crosses the double line & nicks the police cruiser Toby is traveling in sending it rolling over on it's top. Seth was following behind for added support & when his own vehicle is under control he discovers that Toby is missing & the office driving Toby is bleeding badly. Once everything at the scene is handled, a man hunt for the fugitive is under way. Meanwhile, Seth wife Carly's placed ward goes missing & the hunt for Alex gets started too. Everyone in the police & sheriff's department are looking for the two missing people & are sent in all different directions following leads. When Carly finally believe she knows where Alex is headed she & police office Kenny head that way. Will they find Alex? Will Seth find Toby? Did Toby kill Chase? Or did someone else kill Chase?
I must again admit, I am a fan of Melinda Leigh's writing. I like this collaboration between Melinda Leigh & Kendra Elliot, their writing styles complete one another perfectly. This book is another good murder mystery short story taking you on a journey tracking down a murderer but is it the man who confessed? You will have to read the book to find out! I will be reading more books by both of these ladies. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the genre & anyone one interested in branching out beyond what they normally read.
I voluntarily reviewed a NetGalley.com copy of this book.
Another novella set in Solitude, BURNED BY HER DEVOTION follows up on the events that start in DEATH AND HER DEVOTION when Chase Ryan is killed so if you haven't read DEATH AND HER DEVOTION yet I would suggest that you do so first.
This novella focuses on Seth and his wife Carly as they are trying to track down a missing girl and a missing murderer. It's fast paced and the reader never knows what is right around the corner. I also really enjoyed getting the chance to know Seth and Carly better.
I do recommend this novella to anyone that has been following the Solitude saga and if you aren't, well why not? I have found this entire saga to be really enjoyable reads. There isn't any graphic sex so readers of all ages would be entertained.
*** I received this book at no charge from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed within are my own.
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
This is the second book in the series - and you definitely need to read book 1 first, as the story is ongoing. I am assuming that you have in my review.
Now that Zane and Stevie are on their honeymoon, Seth takes over the transfer of Chase's murderer from their jail. The crazy is continuing in Solitude, and when he is involved in a crash, he is lucky to survive. We learn about how he and his wife Carly have been working hard to get their marriage back on track, which invests us in both their futures. That is quite an ask as things get more and more dangerous for both of them.
If you like a mystery, with a touch of crazy, and a strong relationship, then should enjoy this.
RATING: 4 STARS (I received an ARC from the NETGALLEY) (Review Not on Blog)
First off, Kendra Elliot and Melinda Leigh both work on the Rogue series. There are two series before this one, Rogue River (4 novellas) and Rogue Winter (2 novellas). These novellas are based in Solitude, Oregon about 4 characters. Two are sisters, one is a police officer, Stevie and the other is a social worker, Carly. Stevie is dating police chief, Zane and Carly is married to Investigator Seth. Each Rogue spinoff has a different crime.
In these two novellas we have the four investigating a murder of a TV star that is bringing the paparazzi to the small town. As the four try to solve the murder they seem to be getting closer to danger. I love these quick romantic-suspense novellas. They are perfect for a quick satisfying read.
I enjoy the Rogue River books by these two ladies. They have strong and interesting characters, a small town setting on the West Coast, and mysteries that keep me guessing. And let's not forget the romantic relationships, sweet, stormy, and sexy.
"Burned by Her Devotion" starts where "Death and Her Devotion" left off. We have more than one villain this time around, and while one was obvious, the other was less so. There was one character who completely fooled me; I sure didn't see it coming. There were some tense moments, some heartfelt moments, a little humor, and some romance. Seth and Carly have been working on patching up their marriage and I like that we see the hard work that goes into making a marriage work. It's not all sunshine and rainbows but there's hope and love and persistence.
When the confessed murderer of movie star Chase Ryan is abducted on his way to county jail, Deputy Seth Ryan puts his force into action to find him. Seths investgation uncovers information about the victims life that leads to suspects in the kidnapping. Chase had a crazy stalker and now her 13 year old daughter has also disappeared so they are looking for 2 people and there are plenty of suspects.
This is the 2nd and final installment in the Rogue Vows series and it is just as fast paced as the first. This is a novella so it is a short read, but it is guaranteed to keep you turning the pages. A great collaboration between Kendra and Melinda. Thank you to net galley for an advanced r waders copy for a fair and honest review.
I recently enjoyed Seconds to live by Melinda Leigh and thought I would try another one and it didn't disappoint. I accidentally read the second book before the first one in the series (Death and Her Devotion by Kendra Elliott). I don't think it made a huge difference, except now I wanted to read the first book. The book is fast paced and and a very quick read since it's only about a hundred pages. I really enjoyed it and couldn't wait to find out who killed Chase Ryan. I will say Cyndee Sykes and her daughter were two of the craziest characters and I really mean crazy.
Thanks to NetGalley, Amazon Publishing and the author for a free electronic ARC of this novel.
Burned by Her Devotion is very well written. The book had thrills and suspense including several red herrings and one really unexpected twist. I definitely didn’t know who was guilty until near the end.
I didn’t read the first book and wonder if that would have helped me get into this one. I didn’t really identify with any of the characters though it was nice to see a married couple, Seth and Carly, who’d weathered storms and found their way back to a solid marriage.
Wow - This novella that starts right the day after the ending of "Death and her Devotion" brings a lot of interesting turns in the investigation of Chase Ryan's murder. I loved it, how everything changed.
Carly and Seth are a very sweet couple, I love Reading about them and how their marriage is so much better now than at the first Rogue River novellas.
This is the follow-up to the first book. There’s an accident and the man who confessed to the murder escapes. Did he really kill his friend? Where is he now? Things evolve and although we sort of know who the real murderer is, there’s a surprise at the end. Another excellent story not to be missed!
