A cowboy's promise

The thrill of the rodeo is gone for cowboy Caleb Jensen. Nowadays, he helps out at a Texas ranch, keeping bad memories locked away. Then the ranch owner's granddaughter unexpectedly returns home—with a request he can't accept. Former army captain Brenda Kaye is organizing a charity rodeo, and she needs Caleb to get back in the saddle. She's determined to save her family's ranch, even if it means working with the smart-aleck cowboy—and uncovering the mysteries that lie in their pasts. Brenda's used to the dangers of war, but if she trusts Caleb, could the next casualty be her heart?

I LOVED this book! Capt. Brenda Kaye, injured by a suicide bomber, has retired and come home. Caleb Jensen has spent years working to support his younger brother and give him a college education. Both are at a crossroads in their lives. Both find themselves at the Kaye ranch. Brenda's brother, Joel, ropes her into coordinating a benefit rodeo and enlists his good friend, Caleb's, help as well.

It wasn't a good fit for me. It was bored by page 40. I skipped the end and read the last 10 pages. Feeling a little guilty, I randomly picked a middle of book spot and read a little. Nope still super bored. So no more guilt. It was dry. Clean Christian romance.

A Ranch to Call Home is a tender love story that is the epitome of Christian Romance. Without being preachy, the broken and wounded main characters push through their nightmares by trusting God.

I think Leann Harris has found her forte in crafting stories that transport characters through a walk of faith. Caleb and Kaye are both haunted. Both carry ghosts of past guilt, grief, and despair. But the Lord brings about circumstances that stretch them to look ahead to what He is doing instead of looking back with doubt over the tragedies that happened before.

Anyone seeking an easy read with a peaceful setting will love A Ranch to Call Home.

I love that she has told the story of this character briefly mentioned in her equine therapy book! You have to love her characters and the story is real to life. My only complaint is the way her heroine became whiny and truly stupid towards the end! The ending was all it was supposed to be but I dislike reading about whiny people who talk about faith but don't walk the walk!

"Guilt, PTSD and making peace with our past are key to this story in which character development reflects God's healing powers. They remind the reader that, though broken, God still uses us for His glory". (RT Book Reviews, rated 4 stars)

Very sweet romance with lots of horses and cowboys! Don't know why it took me so long to read, but once I really sat down with it, it was a breeze.
