The Ulysses Syndrome: The immigrant Syndrome with Chronic and Multiple Stress

For millions of individuals, today, emigration presents stress levels of such intensity that they exceed the human capacity of adaptation. These persons are, therefore, highly vulnerable to Immigrant Syndrome with Chronic and Multiple Stress, known as the Ulysses Syndrome (in reference to the Greek hero who suffered countless adversities and dangers in lands far from his loved ones). This Syndrome is an emerging health problem in our societies, making itself manifest in the current context of globalization, in which the living conditions of a large majority of immigrants have deteriorated dramatically. Immigrant Syndrome with Chronic and Multiple Stress is characterized on the one hand, by the fact that the individual suffers certain extreme stressors or afflictions and, on the other, by the fact that he presents a series of symptoms from several areas. But The Ulysses Syndrome is not a mental disorder, it is a migratory extreme mourning, outside the area of psychopathology. The Ulysses Syndrome is found in the area of preventative health care and the psychosocial sector more than in the area of the treatment.Loneliness, fear, despair ... the migrations of this new millennium remind us increasingly of Homers' verses “ ... But the days found him sitting on the rocks or sands, torturing himself with tears, groans and heartache, and looking out with streaming eyes across the watery wilderness…." (Odyssey, Song V, 150,) and the part of the text in which Ulysses tells “You ask me my name. I shall tell you. My name is nobody and nobody is what everyone calls me”. (Odyssey, Song IX, 360)It is clear that if a man has to become a nobody in order to survive, if he has to remain permanently invisible, he will have no identity, will never become socially integrated, nor will he enjoy mental health. We live in bad times if mere mortals have to behave like heroes in order to survive. Ulysses was a demigod who, despite this, barely survived the terrible adversities and dangers he had to face, but the people who are arriving at our borders today are creatures of flesh and blood who, nevertheless, must suffer episodes that are as dramatic as, or even more so than, those described in the Odyssey.

Hace un tiempo pude escuchar a Achotegui en una conferencia y compré su libro. Esta semana lo he leído detenidamente y lo recomiendo. Lo he leído debido a mi interés personal y profesional del duelo migratorio. Un duelo que si no se supera/gestiona puede llevar a la persona hacía el padecimiento del Síndrome de Ulises (denominación que se le ocurrió a Achotegui el año 2002). Es importante destacar que el Síndrome no es un trastorno mental pero obviamente hay personas que conviven al mismo tiempo con las dos cosas. El Síndrome de Ulises es reversible. Si queréis saber más, tenéis que leer este libro. El lenguaje es simple y se entiende a la perfección.
Lo único que me ha molestado un poco es que la edición es un poco basta, a nivel estético no está muy bien cuidada e incluso faltan signos de puntuación entre otras cosas.

Muito bom! Amo um bom livro dum psiquiatra que passa metade das páginas a criticar o DSM. Achei que os casos clínicos podiam estar um pouco mais detalhados e que às vezes era um bocado repetitivo mas he made his point for sure

Leí la segunda edición del libro en español, de la misma editorial. Aunque el texto me aclaró dudas y me orientó para el desarrollo de la investigación que estaba realizando, quedé muy decepcionada con el poco cuidado que puso la editorial en la publicación (tablas repetidas, faltas de ortografía, falta de signos de puntuación). El lenguaje es ‘coloquial’ aunque supongo que esto tenía más que ver con mis expectativas

Académicamente, es un texto con referencias informativas y bastante teóricas. Es interesante los datos que muestra en cuanto estadísticas relacionadas al tema de migración y sus contextos a nivel mundial. El autor, claro es, se centra bastante en la migración dentro de los países de Europa del oeste, con migrantes del continente africano y de Europa del este; cosa que se aprecia al ser de lo usual y la migración dentro del “sueño americano”. La comparación, o bien, referencia con Ulises es extraordinaria ya que el autor también va haciendo referencia y conectando con otros personajes de la literatura hispanoamericana. Sin haber leído recientemente La Odisea, pude seguir con el autor las pistas claves para ilustrar su punto entre la migración y el personaje de Ulises en el viaje por su regreso a Itaca.
Personalmente, fue un texto al que me pude identificar en varios fragmentos al ser también parte del grupo de migrantes dentro de un país americano y concuerdo en que los estudios enfocados al tema deberían de ir más allá de solo analizar tablas, gráficas y números; ya que lo que migran son personas y más importante, su efecto se debe de evaluar también en lo social, en los psicológico y en lo asintomáticos que pueden ser aquellas personas que migran pero no por ello desestimar su lucha y sus desafíos. Considero que es un texto más apreciado para aquellos que hayan migrado en algún punto de su vida y puedan identificar los puntos claves de este libro en la misma aplicación a casos concretos. Aún así, para los que no, es interesante esta recomendación para resaltar aquello que no lo va a reflejar la ciencia, los números y las estadísticas; aquellos diagnósticos que vienen en consecuencia a situaciones extremas, de frustraciones, soledad, estigma, falta de oportunidades, entre otras.
Lo único es que hay fragmentos o partes del texto en que es bastante repetitivo y teórico. Al final, hay un capítulo designado a análisis de casos que pudo haberse elaborado más y hacer del texto una lectura más enriquecedora.

Interesante análisis sobre el proceso migratorio y las consecuencias físicas, psicológicas y emocionales que conlleva. Crítica a la psiquiatría hegemónica desde dentro e importancia del diagnóstico por causas y no por síntomas.
