Thamizhini joined the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at the age of nineteen and spent eighteen years as a combatant, educator and, for some time, head of the women’s division of its Political Wing. Her memoir, In the Shadow of a Sword, weaves back and forth between reminiscences of her childhood experiences of state violence and her decision to join the LTTE. It recounts the many projects she undertook for the civilian population; her participation in the Peace Talks of 2002; the freedoms granted and constraints placed upon her during the armed struggle; and her experiences in combat training, on the battlefield, and in political negotiations and diplomacy. It is a narrative weighted with grief and remorse yet glistening with moments of humour and thick with compassion. The memoir contains wry observations on gender roles and media manipulation in times of war and is a valuable archive that rescues female combatants from oblivion.

A raw, personal account of the life of an LTTE warrior. This is a balanced take on the freedom movement during the Sri Lankan Civil war. It starts with how she joined the group despite protests from her family because she believed that she could genuinely make a difference to her people. Despite the internal struggles she faced, the change in Tamil people's attitude towards the LTTE, the criticism she had to endure, and the confusion she herself felt at some of the decisions taken by the LTTE leadership, she continued to give her all with the hope and belief that this was all for the greater good of the Tamil people.

তামিল টাইগারদের যুদ্ধ সফল হলে, নিজেদের রাষ্ট্র হলে প্রভাকরণ হতো সেই রাষ্ট্রের জাতির পিতা। নানা ভালো ভালো কথা লেখা থাকতো তাকে নিয়ে। দেশজুড়ে থাকতো তার ছবি, মনুমেন্ট, বইজুড়ে সাফল্যের কাহিনী। ইতিহাস এমনই। সে সফলদের ভালো দিক দেখে আর পরাজিতদের খারাপ দিক। ইতিহাস বিজয়ীদের নেতাকে একমাত্র হিরো বানিয়ে ফেলে, কখনো কখনো দেবত্ব আরোপ করে আর পরাজিতদের ভিলেন। হিরো আর ভিলেনের কাহিনির মধ্যে ম্লান হয়ে যায় অজস্র যোদ্ধার কাহিনী, আত্মত্যাগ, বীরত্ব, কৌশল সবকিছু। তামিল টাইগারদের যুদ্ধ নিয়ে বই, বায়ো এর আগেও পড়েছি। যখনই পড়ি বারবার আমার বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধের কথা মনে পড়ে। কোথায় মিল, কোথায় অমিল, কেন তারা পারলো না, কেন ব্যর্থ হলো, তারাও তো তাদের নিপীড়িত জাতির জন্য একটা আলাদা দেশ চেয়েছিল। প্রতিবারই মনে হয়েছে যুদ্ধে নেতার কৌশল, বীরত্ব, যোদ্ধাদের ডেডিকেশন, সাধারণ মানুষের সাপোর্ট, অস্ত্রশস্ত্র ছাড়াও খুব বেশি দরকার আন্তর্জাতিক সাপোর্ট, বড় দেশ গুলোর নেতাদের সাপোর্ট, প্রতিবেশি দেশগুলোর সহযোগিতা। এখানেই পিছিয়ে ছিল তামিল টাইগাররা। প্রতিবেশি দেশ ইন্ডিয়ার ভূমিকা এখানে ছিল দ্বৈত, অনেকটা ডুয়েল রোল প্লে করার মতো। যুদ্ধ শুরুর প্রথম পর্যায়ে টাইগারদের ট্রেনিং এবং সহযোগিতা দিয়েছে র, এবং পরে ইন্ডিয়ান আর্মি সহযোগিতা করেছে শ্রীলংকান আর্মিকে। ইন্ডিয়ান আর্মিদের পিস বিল্ডিং অপারেশনের নামে তামিলদের উপর অত্যাচার উঠে এসেছে এই বইয়ে। দীর্ঘ ৩০ বছরের যুদ্ধ, শ্রীলংকার উত্তর-পূর্ব দিকের একটা বড় অংশ ছিল তামিলদের দখলে। সেখানে তাদের নিজস্ব প্রসাশন ছিল। জনগণ তাদের কথা মতো চলতো। টাইগারদের পলিটিক্যাল উইং নিবিড়ভাবে কাজ করতো তামিল সাধারণ মানুষদের সাথে, উদ্দেশ্য সমাজটাকেও কিছুটা বদলে ফেলা। এতো কিছুর পরেও তামিল টাইগারদের যুদ্ধ শেষ হয়েছে পরাজয়ের মধ্য দিয়েই। ২০০৬ সালের শান্তি প্রক্রিয়া ব্যর্থ হওয়ার পর শেষ যুদ্ধ যখন শুরু ততদিনে টাইগারদের নেতাদের প্রথম জেনেরেশন বৃদ্ধ প্রায়, প্রচুর যোদ্ধা নিহত এবং আহত, নতুন যোদ্ধার সংকট, দীর্ঘ যুদ্ধে ক্লান্ত সাধারণ তামিল জনগণ, নেতৃত্বে থাকা টাইগারদের ভুল সিদ্ধান্ত এবং সর্বোপরি পশ্চিমাদের কাছে টেররিস্ট হিসেবে চিহ্নিত তামিল টাইগারদের কাছে পরাজয় ছাড়া আর কিছু বাকি ছিলনা।
থামিঝিনি যুদ্ধে এছেছিলেন যখন তার বয়স উনিশ। অজস্র তামিল যোদ্ধাদের মৃত্যু, নিপীড়ন দেখে তার মনে হয়েছিল চুপ করে বসে থাকার সময় এটা নয়। দীর্ঘ আঠার বছর যুদ্ধে ছিলেন তিনি। পলিটিক্যাল উইং এর নারী শাখার প্রধান ছিলেন। অনেক যুদ্ধে এবং শান্তি আলোচনায় তার অংশগ্রহণ ছিল। শেষ যুদ্ধে নেতাদের সাথে যখন তার যোগাযোগ বিছিন্ন, অনেক যোদ্ধা যখন সায়ানাইড খেয়ে আত্মহত্যা করছে ধরা দিবে না বলে, তখন থামিঝিনি নিজের কথা না ভেবে ভাবছিলেন তার আন্ডারে থাকা যোদ্ধাদের কথা। কী সিদ্ধান্ত নিবেন তিনি? ধরা দিবেন নাকি আত্মহত্যা? নিজের সাথে অনেক যুদ্ধের পর আত্মসমর্পণ করেছিলেন তিনি। একজন যোদ্ধার জন্য এটাই হয়তো মৃত্যু। তারপরও বেঁচে ছিলেন তিনি। তিন বছর জেল, এক বছরের রিহ্যাবিলেটেশন আর তারপর সাধারণ ক্ষমায় বের হয়ে এসেছিলেন। বইয়ের কাহিনিও এই পর্যন্তই। কেন জানিনা, বইটা শেষ করার পর খুব মন খারাপ হয়েছে। এতো লম্বা সময়ের যুদ্ধ, এতো মানুষের মৃত্যুর পরের এই পরাজয় মনকে বিষণ্ণ করে খুব। থামিঝিনি চেষ্টা করেছেন কিছুটা নিরপেক্ষ থেকে টাইগারদের দোষ, ভুল, শক্তিকে স্পষ্ট করে দেখানোর। আমার মতো বিদ্রোহ, বিপ্লব, সশস্ত্র সংগ্রাম যারা পছন্দ করেন, তাদের এই বই ভালো লাগবেই।

Common woman to LTTE Leader to reformed woman.

Well covered emotions of top level to low level people in organisation during various periods. Also clearly state the various stages of life during the civil war and struggles and mind set of common people.

Though there is some compromise on her experience after her surrender, jail life and rehabilitation. I don’t believe she was given a clean surrender as she didn’t mention the tortures she encountered.

But highly covers a common woman to LTTE to reformed woman.

More jealous in one direction that I didn’t get a pinch of her life experience also more sad on another direction the pain and suffer her likes underwent during 3 decades and all those not resulted for what they all actually sworn for.

Especially loved the places she covers humanity when there is a chance. Example the dead bodies of LTTE and Sinhala float together, another instance where she caught under air shelling and totally submit to god that today is the day, please take my life rather than loading my limbs.

May her soul and those who died both ends to rest in peace.

Must read for those interested in knowing three decade long war between LTTE and Srilankan army.
Written by a women leader of LTTE organization after her surrender to Sri Lankan army.
Though it didn't have accounts of LTTEs early days, there was enough details and events in 1990's and 2000's.
It also gives detailed accounts on status of women in LTTE, Tamil society etc.,
The part of the book which describes last days of the war was heartbreaking. Vannikaadu, Mullivaaikkaal, Mullaitheevu, Nandikadal events will stay in readers head for atleast few days.
The author tried to give balanced view of the organisation and its war against Sri Lankan army instead of glorifying it.

The memoir of a senior woman leader of LTTE from her childhood to war, enrolment as a fighter in the LTTE movement, war, surrender and rehabilitation. Provides great insights about the war from someone who directly experienced it.

Revealing book

A female militant who had believed and volunteered for freedom struggle and how she was disillusioned and disappointed by her beloved organization ! Her premature death is very sad but I also feel relieved that she's not able to hear all the abuses directed at her for writing the truth !

I was really eager to read this because of the involvement of LTTE, widely known as Tamil Tigers, in the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Although there wasn’t any mention of the said incident, it was still a raw and first hand view of Thamizhini’s life in the Movement and, after her surrender, in the Rehabilitation Centre under Sri Lankan Army. This book was originally published in 2016 in Tamil after her untimely and tragic demise by cancer in October 2015.

Thamizhini joined the Liberation Tigers’ Movement as a fighter on 29 July 1991 at the age of 19 and spent 18 years as a combatant, educator and, briefly , head of the women's division of its Political Wing. She vividly narrates her childhood in the violence torn village, her decision to join the Liberation and her subsequent participation in the peace talks of 2002 with Sri Lakhan Government. She points out that through the Movement many young women are afforded some respect and prestige. Living with the threat of economic hardship, death, and sexual assault, turning to combat was the only option for most women.

She further criticises the nationalist movement that promotes armed struggle and praises the women fighters who stand on the frontline, knowing full well that they are in danger of losing not only their life but also their honour. In the last days of the war, towards the disintegration of LTTE, when the Movement didn’t cared or considered the civilians at all, the blind adherence to one man without any criticism or debate within the Movement paved way for its destruction.

After the end of the war in 2009 , Thamizhini was taken into custody by the Sri Lankan military and confined in Welikada Prison and later in a rehabilitation camp until her release in 2013. This memoir is both an observation and critical commentary propped up by a deep sense of accountability to the people and her fellow fighters, especially the women combatants.

I enjoyed reading it and felt her guilt and her subsequent redemption from it. In the wake of the news about Sri Lankan army’s war crimes in the ending days of the war, it’s hard to see things in black and white. It is part a recollection of pain, part a redemption and part an introspection of a militant feminist and a leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). It is very personal yet a profound account of a war and peace.

Excellent book. Gives clean picture of the inside of LTTE and its struggles. More importantly, its neutral or not biased on one side. Maybe a few places felt like the author's perspective isn't right. But this gave clear idea of the internal flaws and challenges within LTTE. Also gives info on the mistakes and crimes by the organization. Must read for someone interested in srilankan civil war and guerilla warfare.
