Nanba MG5 is one of the Yankee manga, and its genre is comedy and action. The main character, Tsuyoshi, is a boy from a Yankee family and he was yankee. One spring, he gets start the ordinary high school life hiding his past. I think it is a very nice script, because you can imagine the feeling of Tsuyoshi easily, and you can feel like you were Yankee and you can’t tell anyone about your that past!
One of my favorite points of this manga is its character design. Tsuyoshi has two design for “Yankee style” and “ordinary style. “Yankee style” is a complex design, because he wears Yankee costume called Tokkou-fuku, and it has a good impact. On the other hand, “ordinary style” wears the high school costume and this is a plain design. I think the main character having two designs is interesting. In addition, this manga is very easy to read with the angular and bold lines, so you can judge the foreword easily.
The other point I like this manga is the expression. For example, one of internal panels shows the anger using the shadow, the onomatopoeias, and the zoom in. There are also some flashback pages with the black gutter.
If you like Yankee manga, I think you will be like this manga!
This was a fun start to a familiar-to-me series. I enjoyed reading it, even if it shows its age in some places. The action scenes and humor are well-done. The yankee-related dialogue has a bit of a learning curve, but I got used to it. 3.5 stars, rounded up.
