Disgraced and “benched” Judge Rosswell Carew gasps in horror early one morning when he watches the report of a girl murdered under the Mississippi River bridge on the waterfront, a couple of blocks from his downtown office in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Although this victim reeks of the evil handiwork of Carew’s nemesis, Nathaniel Dahlbert, Carew and his beloved wife, Tina, herself a retired sheriff’s deputy, can’t let themselves become distraught. Their new detective agency is up and running and they convince themselves this murder has nothing to do with them. Later that morning, two different people come to their agency and hire their services. Within hours, the married detectives are involved in a different murder case that not only points to the girl’s killing, but also to a possible third homicide. Rosswell and Tina find themselves caught up in a deadly cat-and-mouse game that’s got only one The capture of Nathaniel Dahlbert—or the death of Rosswell Carew!

In this 5th volume of the Judge Rosswell Carew Mystery series, we finally get to really begin to learn the main characters thoughts, words, and belief systems. The Judge and his wife, Tina truly are a team in this book.

The Judge and Tina have opened their Private Investigation firm. From the opening on the team find they have three clients that seem connected but why?

Well, I'm not going to tell you as this book should be read and enjoyed by yourselves, just watch out for swords, guns, snakes, rats, perfumes, escaped villains and one very dishonest corpse!

I had no idea that this book was part of a series, let alone so far into one! At first I was wondering if it was one of those narratives where it referred to a past event to give the character back story, but after the fourth one, it was quite obvious that this was part of a series.

I continued on anyway, as I wanted to know how the story panned out.

And theeeeen the story took an odd turn around 70% through - at least to me since I wasn't expecting a secret society that kind of felt like a cult. But again, didn't stop me because I wanted to see how the story panned out.

I wasn't feeling the writing or the dialouge - the humour fell flat for me and some parts of the action was a bit confusing. I think maybe if I had started from the beginning, I would have gotten the humour and the banter... maybe.

I love this series! It helps that I know the author and that some of his characters are named after people we both know, but I love that parts of this are laugh-out-loud funny. Other parts are very mysterious indeed. Judge Carew has a nemesis, just as did Sherlock Holmes. I have to say this one is even scarier than Moriarty, though.

I can't wait until Judge Bill comes out with the next one. I know he's working on it.

This is book 5 in the Judge Rosswell Carew series. Hopkins makes the characters come alive. Lots of twists and turns in this murder mystery. Carew is again threatened by his arch enemy the "red headed clown". Murder, infidelity, trickery, sex slavery, and about every other evil known to man. Hopkins leaves room for another book in the series which I eagerly await. If you like murder mysteries and have not read any of Bill Hopkins' Judge Rosswell Carew series please do, I'm sure will enjoy all five.
